Where Chefs Go: Istanbul

"Young also recommends a trip to the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world dating back to the 15th century. There, find a doner shop called Dönerci Şahin Usta, a favorite of Istanbul locals." - Marguerite Imbert

Is it a little touristy? Yes. Is it tasty? Also yes! Look it is right outside the bazaar, you stand in a queue of locals and tourists. It’s an atmosphere. There are great little places around but this one is not bad. In fact, a couple in our group said this was the best kebab they had in Istanbul.

Eh, it was good we liked it. Whenever we come here, our go to is always İskender. It’s a really delicious İskender. The dürümler were also very tasty, and the içli köfte was super fresh hot and flavorful. I had ordered tonbik before, but it was too dry, and the portion was very small. However what we had this time was great. With İskender they serve complimentary: salad, fries, peppers, and pickles. My recommendation for the drink is açık ayran. İskender: 550 TL Dürüm: 355 TL İçli köfte: 95 TL Açık ayran: 56 TL Extra salad: 128 TL

Food taste good. Portion is not that big. Price for one doner is 400 Lira and Ayran 50 lira. I think its a bit expensive give the fact the portion is not that bad. Becarul while u eat coz the paper hold a lots of fat and oil and it can easily destroy your cloths.

Delicious Döner Spot! If you love döner, this joint is a must-visit. The meat is juicy, flavorful, and perfectly roasted, served in a soft wrap or with sliced beef and salad. The service is fast and friendly, and the portions are generous. Highly recommended!

400 Lira for main item (Pide). A lot of people get Yogurt/milk (Aryan?) drink which I did not have. Food is good, but bottom of paper is full of fatty oil liquid. Portion was not that big, I could have probably ate three in one sitting. Little box of chili/peppers are a MUST! If you go here, you won’t be disappointed, but your realize it’s not that crazy. I thought this would be a Turkish version of a sandwich shop just like how Italy/Rome/florence has that Alla Antico Vinao sandwich shop but it’s really a one trick pony type of restaurant. You order in the street thru window and walk next door to stand and eat, no sitting, not like normal restaurant. You think it would be cool since it’s next to Grand Bazaar but it’s like a zoo over there with constant motorcycles, taxis, and tourists, and government employees pushing those black carts of money. Line is genuinely close to 20-30 minutes depending on time of day you go, seems like they close earlier then most.

The hype does not match the kebab, the long line and price are definately not anything special was quite a dissapointment. The bread is the only differing factor but overall it packed flavour over other kebab wraps we had in Istanbul. Kebab as of the 19th of October was 400 lira

As good as described and as good as expected. Yes, there’s a queue that’s got lots of tourists in it, but they do one thing and they do it well. They could sell out a second doner each day but stopping when the first one is done is actually what makes this place so good.

Next to the grand bazaar, the food is clearly overpriced for what it is. Meat was dry, there was no sauce. Avoid this place, you can find better options just by walking a few meters with local people. 11 euros (400tl) for one
