The Best Bars and Restaurants for Late-Night Dining in Portland | Eater Portland

"Adding more fuel to the fiery debate, this funky, Americana space labels its hot dogs as “Hot Dog Sandwiches.” Despite the late night, alcohol-fueled arguments this will no doubt cause, the inventive hot dogs, like the Seoul Dog (kimchi, sambal aioli, and scallions) and Tijuana Dog (cream cheese, pico de gallo, jalapeño, and cilantro), as well as Frito Pie, satisfy until 2:30 a.m. daily. For those who want to keep the party going, there’s always the “taptails” like a margarita or frosé." - Thom Hilton

Where to Find Bowls of Captivating Chili in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"Donnie Vegas is a laid-back hot dog spot run by two Ned Ludd veterans, Chef Benjamin Artaiz and bartender Jeremy Wilson. While the chili is most popular when consumed on the chili cheese dog, you can order it as a side, as well. The beef chili includes a mix of pinto, kidney, and black beans, which give it some substance, while the cumin, coriander, and chipotle guarantee it doesn’t need the dog to be tasty. The chili is topped with sour cream, green onion, and jalapeno; the restaurant is open for takeout and delivery, with service on the patio as well."

Portland Restaurants and Cafes Serving CBD Coffees, Juices and more | Eater Portland

"This super-casual hot dog menagerie off Alberta makes a CBD frozen margarita with prickly pear, easy to drink on hot days on the patio laden with colorfully painted picnic tables. Though, don’t be surprised if you see the spot switch up the recipe; as the menu reads, “Donnie changes the menu whenever he wants, ya dig.”" - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Donnie’s is the kind of place where you can get into just enough trouble and a local gem amongst the NE crowd. I’ve been coming here for over 9 years and expect a lil fun attitude, a very decent shelf, and some shenanigans come the weekend. The weekend DJs on rotation span the gamut and there is usually pockets of people (or a full on party) dancing on the weekends depending on the vibe. Bring a fun sticker and slap it somewhere. Sundays at lunch is the best time to come for a chill day, and yes they’re very dog friendly until dusk. Party on the front, patio in the back.

Google
Great dive bar. Hot Dog, Beer and some Fritos for $13 is a steal! Awesome back patio, the vending machine you wished you had in your house as a kid and a bunch of down to earth/no bullshit folks. Love this spot

Cyd Gann

Google
It is one of the last few good dive bars on Alberta Street. Donnie Vegas has a great atmosphere, down to earth feel. Have a seat on the patio on the back or street side and watch the world go by. Good music most of the time also.

Google
Randomly went to this bar during a visit to Portland, and it did not disappoint. Nick (pretty sure that is his name) was so nice!!! I was on vacation and was craving a cosmo. He kindly made me one, and it was SO GOOD. Loved the vibes here so much we wanted to come back again but ran out of time. We'll definitely come back on our next road trip to Portland.

Google
One of my favorite dives in Portland. If you love hot dogs, this is the spot (and they have vegan dogs around too). The bartenders are all so sweet but also have your back in making sure everyone is safe at the bar. Truly outstanding bar and service from these babes.

Google
This is one of the best dive bars around Portland. Great atmosphere, great drinks, outside area is large. Long time staff who really care about their space.

Google
Drinks were delicious and reasonably priced, nice patio area and very dog friendly!

Google
Love Donnie Vegas, great bartenders, great vibes, tasty hot dogs, and you can order in food if they are getting too busy.

Yelp
Good hot dogs that come with Fritos and are reasonably priced. Drinks are good prices and love the dollar jellos. This was a post-game staple after our softball games and if I'm on Alberta and want some cheap drinks this is a good spot to go. Couple TV's as well and they do take Apple Pay
google avatar

Leanne K.

Yelp
Super fun local dive bar with an outdoor patio! Love the locals vibe and cheap beer! Limited food... I think it's just hotdogs but still a fun place to go have a couple cold beers
google avatar

Yelp
We were visiting Portland on a snowy day and stumbled on this bar! They sell hotdogs which we didnt try but the drinks are good and affordable! The bartender was very nice and friendly and the bar is cool and dog friendly! I would come back here!

Gabi C.

Yelp
Hot dogs - fire. Fritos - random. Graffiti - entertaining. Bartenders - dope. MALORT.

Yelp
This is considered the local hangout for neighbors west of 15th and Alberta. I'm still impressed how Ben, the owner was able to flip the place after Black Cat almost destroyed the neighborhood. The menu is simple and to the point; hotdogs and drinks. perfect for a dive bar It's contribution to the neighborhood events and it's promoters will ensure its longevity. Keep up the good work ladies and gentlemen!!

Yelp
I can only commenting on the takeout, since I didn't spend a meal/drink here, but I got a Banh Mi hot dog and a smoky margarita to go -- it comes in a mason jar for $2+, but if you bring the jar back, you obviously don't pay for it again. I was told by a friend that Alberta Street has some good eats and cute shopping, so I came around 1 PM but unfortunately Donnie Vegas was still closed (make sure to check time before you come!). I came back around 4:30 PM, and was happy to have made it. The bartender was super friendly, and this was truly a local (queer) dive bar with a really nice open front space that let in a lot of light. They also have a backdoor patio for outdoor drinking/dining. When I got home about 45 minutes later, the hot dog was still warm, loaded with ingredients, and the drink was still refreshing and chill. I cannot praise the margarita enough -- it was super balanced and had the right amount of smokiness. The hot dog was not as good as I wanted it to be (I think I like more pickle flavour in the carrot/daikon), but it was still good enough of a pair with the margarita. I'd definitely come back again and try another drink and weiner.

Maya C.

Yelp
My absolute favorite dive bar in portland, truly a gem. Drinks are good and affordable, and the hot dogs are just what you need after a night of drinking!

Yelp
From the outside branding, you'd think this place is a fancy restaurant. Don't be fooled, this is an amazing dive bar that is low-key, open at noon, and allows pups inside. Drinks are well priced against other bars on the street and the hotdogs are so effing good. The chili is homemade! They even have veg dogs for those who don't eat meat. I've been here during the day and closed the place down a few times. Bartenders are fast, friendly and never pushy. Check out the dope vending machine in back for some fun with your buds! Happy Hour is 4-7 and that means $1 off dogs and beers! It's a great spot in the summer with a front garage door that opens up to enjoy the good weather. Patio out back with a fire pit too! Street parking only on Alberta so take a Lyft, walk, or ride ya bike! If you're a local or just in town visiting, head in and pull up a stool. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night to order some dogs and drinks. Cool dive with good music. The outside patio is open for sitting, but it was really raining and all the covered tables were taken when we got there. There are some uncovered tables, so more seating space when it's dry. We were able to order a couple $1 jello shots to-go (green only) which was awesome. LOVE the taptails on tap idea. The Iceberg was oh-so refreshing; what a creative combo (Pacifico + frozen marg)?? Frozen CBD Marg on its own was delightful as well. The mason jars are huge (32 oz) so it was definitely a deal for $13 each (I believe that was the price for each). $2 for each jar, but bring 'em back, and they won't charge again to fill 'em up; plus extra $1 off the drinks, too. The dogs are so cheap and so good!!! Fluffy buns, but they could not stand up to the sauce. Whatevs. Banh Mi was extremely flavorful and fresh. Seattle dog was rich and yummy. I used the caramelized onions that shlopped off my dog for my potato chips that come as a side... amazing! The flavor/consistency kinda reminded me of french onion soup. By the time our takeout was ready, one half of one of the long patio tables became available outside. We chilled for a sec, but the crowd was a little rough, so we ate/drank at home.

Yelp
Great dive bar with hot dogs and Chile Frito pie! What happen in Vegas stays in Vegas!

Yelp
A chill place to come and have drinks at. Its located on the corner of 12th and Alberta. What's nice about this place is that they have both outdoor seating in the patio in the back and a few small tables in front. They also have some games that you can play as a group. I learned how to play "Shut the box", which is a dice game. As like any bar, they have a good selection of drinks and cocktails that can be ordered. The prices are reasonable. The waitstaff are sl friendly and will make sure you get what you want.

Yelp
Love it here; bartenders very chill and the drink specials are unreal! You can even roll the die to venture out for a mystery drink~live dj and soul train playing are on point

Yelp
We come here to be apart of the makers market and always snag a veggie version of their famous hot dogs! Being a total sucker for a good hotdog this place is my favorite.

Yelp
What a fun place! Awesome beer specials and great dogs. We will definitely be back for more.

Yelp
Donne Vegas is a place I've been to before. Had a great experience in the past but tonight was a different story. Me and my fiancé ordered 2 drinks and 1 hot dog for the the night. Hung out on the back patio and was minding our own business until the bartender came and started cleaning our table. As she was cleaning, I said "thank you" and she just ignored me. I thought nothing of it until I saw her at the next table full of white folks and was just smitten as can be. Me, as an Asian American and my fiancé the same, we felt like she was completely rude to us. We never have her a reason to be rude as we simply thanked her for her service. It was the tall bartender btw, couldn't catch her name. I'll never come back here as I've never felt like my race was a problem until tonight. I will never be coming back here. We enjoy the ambiance, drinks, and music but tonight was a different vibe.

Yelp
Donnie Vegas reminds me of the Citgo gas station I worked at as a teen. The happy hour deal for Moscow Mule is a steal at $5. They use Rachel's ginger beer from Seattle which has a most pleasant taste and is superior to Black Seal. The bartender jumped on the bar to adjust the signs. I marveled at her. She was a sight to behold and friendly to boot. I went to the restroom. The Bruce Lee vs Mike Tyson mural on the walls made me realize I found a nice place to stay for an hour or so.
google avatar

Critic M.

Yelp
This place is just plain gross. The bar is filthy. They try to keep the lights down low so people won't notice but it's really dirty. The bartender was very rude. Everything about this place was nasty.
google avatar

Yelp
I really, really like this bar. In a town that is inundated with dozens, if not hundreds of bars, it is hard to find a decent spot to grab a drink and some good, cheap food. In Portland, you get a choice of the following: cheap prices, quality food or good service. Most bars can at most get two of those down, but Donnie Vegas knocks down all three. They have a happy hour that goes from four to seven, along with a permanent SIN discount every night from ten until close. Food is super basic, but in my opinion great because it's basic. They serve hot dogs with chips, along with Frito pie (something that is hard to find outside of the South). The prices range from three dollars for a basic dog to six for the Frito pie, which is a steal considering that most places on Alberta charge around fifteen dollars an entree. Another interesting thing about this bar is that they have "tap tails", which are cocktails that are poured out of the tap like beer. I like their game "rolling the dice", in which you can roll a dice and you get a drink that corresponds with the number you roll. I've tried some interesting new drinks doing that, and they don't rip you off. I love Donnie Vegas, and it's become my new favorite bar.

Alicia A.

Yelp
Unfortunately this place isn't what it used to be. Was greeted by a bartender with a bad attitude, ended up going somewhere else because of it. However the owner and the food will always be great!

Yelp
On my quest to find every bar in town with a Buck Hunter machine, I ended up at Donnie Vegas. I can't believe I hadn't been here before! This is one great dive bar! What do I like about it? Hot dogs! They've got a great list of interesting hot dogs, ranging from traditional to Korean-inspired. Lots of options! Oh, and for $2 you can get a side of either Fritos or gummy bears. This place is quirky as hell and I love it. Cocktails on tap! The quickest way to get a quality drink! I will say their palomas are a bit more carbonated than I like, but it's still a paloma on tap, which makes me a happy camper. And with 5 different taptails, that's more than any other area bar I can think of. Rolling dice to win! There's some sort of thing where you roll a die and depending on where it lands, you get different drinks. Some options are good (taptails!) some are bad (Fernet... blegh) and some are up to chance (bartender's choice). But hey, it's a fun concept and I support it. The only thing that I don't love about this place is that there's only one single-stall bathroom, which means when nature calls, you could be waiting for a while. But beyond that, Donnie Vegas is almost dive bar perfection.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
I love this place. It's the perfect neighborhood bar. And they have pinball machines! I am "old-school" and love me some pinball. Shout out to Colleen, one of my favorite bartenders. And I love the back patio.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Pretty cool dive on Alberta. I had passed by here a few times but never ventured in. It definitely had a fun crowd of people DJ dancing. Their shots are poured strong and the Seattle dogs are loaded. Patio has a fire pit but closes at 11 because of neighbors. If i lived closer I would love to have this as a great neighborhood bar.
google avatar

Mashall S.

Yelp
The inside is back open with masked seating when not at tables and a max of 6 per sitting group! Bartenders are always friendly! Hello shots are pretty good! Not too strong for a $1. And all the hot dogs are damn good! I got the chili dog and it comes with chips! Pretty sweet "dive"!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not sure what this place is doing on Alberta, but I am glad it's here. It's perhaps the least pretentious bar in Portland; the ambience is delightfully divey without straying into the territories of contrivance or squalor. Modern and classic hard/alt/punk rock seems to dominate the playlist, but the most random things slip in. This comes down to the staff, a major part of the atmosphere. They're talkative, jovial, and they seem to actually enjoy working (well, as much as one can enjoy food service...soldier on, you brave souls!). The atmosphere is a key ingredient in the appeal of Donnie Vegas. Their food and drinks complete the package. Like everything else about the bar, the offerings are enjoyable, fairly inexpensive, and honest. Hotdogs are the only item on the food menu, and I wouldn't have it any other way. They're offered with a variety of fixings (I'd recommend the Chili and The banh mi dogs), they're $5 each...and they are delicious. Sometimes, I don't want to go to a bar and eat a kobe beef patty on toasted brioche with a delightful tarragon/truffle aoili whilst sipping an artisanal cocktail made with homemade bitters. Sometimes, I just want to stuff my face with processed meat while swilling an iceberg*. Donnie Vegas has my back. * house specialty of sorts, it's a dollop of frozen margarita or pina colada floating in a pint of pacifico..,don't let the simple description fool you, these are delicious and potentially dangerous.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
This place is down right awesome! The taptails are genuinely great and are ingenious in their flavor combinations. The cucumber smash is delightful. This place also had the best selling clean bathroom., as if Merlin Olsen crapped a floral bouquet. I highly recommend stopping in this establishment and partaking in their unique tasty libations, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. This place is Phun with a capital P.
google avatar

Tommy F.

Yelp
If you follow me, you know I love the dives. Donnie's doesn't disappoint. It seats about 15 inside and about 20 on the patio. The only food is hot dogs and they are good. A great place to get yer drink on.
google avatar

Ryann C.

Yelp
Awesome dive bar with a cool atmosphere. Came in for a pint before dinner. Didn't try the food here but I plan to next time.

Jake M.

Yelp
First three times I've been here I've had my car double charged. Second the bartender needs to do some manscaping, no one wants chest hair near there straw boss, do us all a favor and clean it up
google avatar

Kodi T.

Yelp
Support your local dive! We were craving veggie hot dogs and found this place on Yelp. It was a true dive bar and perfect hole in the wall. The fancy hot dogs were AMAZING all for a reasonable price. They had a decent tap list and near perfect Moscow Mules that were huge! We will definitely be coming here again.

Albert H.

Yelp
Great dogs, great prices, great times. Been here a couple of times when crawling down Alberta and it's always a blast !
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
"This isn't a Mexican bar, draft beer only" was said to me and my friends when we tried to order a corona. Says a lot about this place. They also told us never to come back after we got defensive about what they said to us ‍‍
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Hot dog! Beer here! Donnie Vegas is like the best of a baseball game without the balls, but plenty of bats and strikeouts. The male to female ratio was 7-0. Men may be winning when it comes to Donnie Vegas, but there were no winners. Of course, a local Portland bar with the hipster level turned down to normal and Vegas vibe adjusted to maybe, makes Donnie Vegas a legitimate option when strolling along this section of Alberta Street. I stopped in for a local IPA and Seattle Dog. Neither was as "fabulous" as Vegas. Instead they were o.k. The bartender was the same. What happens in Donnie Vegas may not stay in Donnie Vegas, but if you're already in the Alberta Arts District and wanting no frills grub and drinks then stop in cause ... Hot dog! Beer here!
google avatar

christine h.

Yelp
First of all, this bar smells like hot dogs. I know that's what they serve, but I find it offensive to my sensibilities. Also, the bartenders always have my drink ready to go the minute I walk through the door. Did I ASK for a drink? Why is it in your hand? Why would you ASSUME what I want and have it ready for me? Also, dogs. I mean, who would like to pet friendly and cute dogs while you are drinking? What the hell is up with this place? This doesn't feel like Vegas in the way that no one is in overpriced clothing paying way too much for drinks. No one is hitting on me, crossing the line, and the bartender is making sure I'm safe. They even walked me home a few times??? This place succ. 1 Star
google avatar

Terence C.

Yelp
Great addition to the Alberta neighborhood. The bar struggled in thknow beginning due to the previous Black Cat Cafe. What a dump. The new owner made a point to get to know the locals likes and concerns to develop a strong client base The bartenders make a point get to know the neighbors too. The food and atmosphere is perfect for sports without having go to a sports bar
google avatar

Jesy B.

Yelp
"Taptails? What the hell are taptails"? was my thought coming into DV with a big group of people. Two minutes later, question answered - cocktails on tap! Hu-duh. They have about 5 options and I went with the Moscow Mule - YUM. They also have some creative hot dog choices - basically your classic hot dog but with a bevy of different topping such as the Bahn Mi (hoisin, pickles, cilantro), Seattle Dog (cream cheese & caramelized onions) and Currywurst (caramelized onion, cilantro, scallion, house curry sauce). The dogs are great, but the BUNS. THE BUNS. This place really sells itself short with the crappy $1 grocery store buns they use. I simply don't get it. With fun toppings like those, why wrap it up in cheap crap? That's all I could think when I was eating my Bahn Mi dog. Good...but the bun....anyways... It's pretty spacious both inside and out. They also had cornhole in their patio if you want to toss around some sacks while enjoying a cool drink. You order at the bar, as per usual with Alberta joints. This would definitely be closer to a 4 star if they step up their bun game. If you're going to serve hot dogs, really, chose a better bun!
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
This is my new favorite neighborhood spot. The owners and bartenders are very chill and friendly, $2 PBR, interesting hotdogs, and a nice big bar. I recommend the Tokyo Dog - cream cheese, kogarashi, and scallions. And apparently they have a huge back patio which I can't wait to check out this summer. My feedback is that they should get better buns, or at least toast them. And a pinball machine!
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Donnie's is always my pick for after work drinks on Alberta- the service is great, the drinks are yummy, and it's always chill in the late afternoons/early evenings. They're dog friendly, and have a cozy back patio with bocce ball. In the summer, their frosé and CBD margaritas are always a safe bet. While the food menu is not extensive, the bahn mi dog has never let me down.
google avatar

Matthew W.

Yelp
After an afternoon of hangrily stomping around the office I thought I would go to one of my usual Alberta haunts. I drove about east to west before I remembered the DV was now open. I stopped in with low expectations for a simple wiener to fill my growing hunger. What I got was the receiving end of an awesome sauce explosion. Nick recommended the Bunh Mi Dog and something I couldn't understand. "Fetch me the best of you dogs trice!" I declared as I climbed aboard my cluby stool. He came back with a Bunh Mi, Seattle, and a Chilli dog all of which I devoured along with a delusions Pilsner and Moscow Mule on tap. On tap?! I shall return.
google avatar

Holy-foo' X.

Yelp
"If you insist, I imagine that I shall have to trundle my franks down into Sodom and Gomorrah....' ..Sadly he realized how low Fortuna had spun his wheel. He had never imagined that he would one day be praying that people buy hot dogs from him..." --Toole, "Confederacy of Dunces"
google avatar

Chuck S.

Yelp
This place is just another faux "dive" bar in portland. Its now to the point that places like this have a generic "cool" vibe, and are not authentic. Basically, its almost over for this town and the genuine article. The service was fine. The drinks were ok.

T L.

Yelp
An excellent divey bar. Cocktails are tasty and a good size. Bar food is dependably good (but you have to enjoy a good hotdog to fully appreciate it). An easy place to relax and enjoy a fun night with friends
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Great post rock show vibes. Divey enough, but not scummy at all. Stiff pours, jello shots and a "roll the dice" board for cheap shots. Check it out next time you're in the area!
google avatar

Fiona S.

Yelp
Nice dive bar vibes. Pretty disappointed the Barman was happy to serve us drinks but did not inform us they were closing in 5minutes so proceeded to take drinks off everyone almost immediately. We obviously wouldn't have wasted our money on a round of drinks if we knew we wouldn't be able to actually enjoy them.

K.M. P.

Yelp
Cocktails on tap & hot dogs. These are two of my favorite things and Donnie Vegas specializes in both of them. You can even get Fernet on tap here -- I haven't even seen that in SF! Oh and they're both extremely cheap: taptails for $7 and hot dogs for $5. What is not to love?! Note: skip the Seattle dog, go for the Seoul or Banh Mi dogs Also: friendly bartenders + back patio!
google avatar

Estrella G.

Yelp
Don't know know what's not to like/love. Loaded hot dogs and a vegan dog with decent and affordable drinks. Coming all the way from Florida, we deff appreciated the little details. they even had CDB simple syrup but no, we didn't try.
google avatar

Jared M.

Yelp
Decent bar but instead of cutting you off they will just serve you w cocktail w/ NO BOOZE in it. Bartender TED is known for this. Watch out people. $9 ginger beer is not worth it.
google avatar

Aarin M.

Yelp
This bar has a unique and welcoming vibe. A jovial, fun yet gritty atmosphere without trying too hard like so many places do. The clientele was friendly, communal yet unimposing. The bartenders were knowledgeable, respectful, and accommodating. I highly recommend this place to all bar lovers in Portland. It got its reputation as an industry favorite for a reason, a high compliment from what I understand. Not a sloppy drunk or creeper in sight. I have noted the reviews about this spot being unfriendly to women and I have to lend my two cents as a feminist. Although I shiver at the thought of a women feeling affronted in any realm of society, I feel this instance was likely an exception to the rule in this place where the bartenders and clientele are respectful and welcoming to females. I hope the dude that was unkind to the reviewer on here learns his lesson somewhere out there in the karmic realm, but the bar as a whole doesn't deserve to be thrown under the bus for an unfortunate one time event. Just my two cents. Sisters, please don't be deterred and enjoy those delicious taptails!!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Taptails, hotdogs, beers, and good vibes! This is a good spot to come with a group and have a good time. Good service and great drinks!
google avatar

Vanessa B.

Yelp
I like the open garage door and picnic table concept, but on a Sat night the music wasn't great and they've got hot dogs advertised online but no one eating them and no signs of them cooking them once we got there. I was happy to have my pup with me outside, (except there were a lot of smokers) but I might head somewhere else with a patio next time I need a beer in Alberta
google avatar

Katherine E.

Yelp
I love this place. It's probably good I don't live in Portland because I don't think I'd ever leave. The hot dogs are God Tier as are the cocktails and service. The f'in best.
