The 12 Best Tapas Spots In Madrid

"The Mercado de Antón Martín is where to walk to different food stalls (or learn to stomp and clap at the city's most famous flamenco school on the top floor). For tapas, Doppelgänger stands out for its Spanish dishes fused with spicy Asian and South American flavors, like ají, curries, and kimchi. Its concise menu only has about eight dishes—and about the same number of tables, including bar seating, so reserve ahead. You can't go wrong whether you go for the €40 per person tasting menu, or just order a few a la carte. Whatever you choose, don’t miss the tangy Adobix, a tempura catch of the day topped with fermented soy and anis jam—it’ll leave you wondering how they managed to perfectly mesh so many flavors into a single bite—or the tamale with codfish dripping in zesty yellow aji, lemon, and aioli." - lori zaino

If you're ever in Madrid and craving something unique, make sure to pass by this place – a hidden gem tucked away inside the Antón Martin Market. While this vibrant market is known for its diverse array of food stalls, they stands out with its incredible Spanish&Asian fusion dishes that take traditional flavors and add a creative twist. The ambiance is cozy and intimate, tucked in a quieter corner of the market, providing a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the crowd. There is a menu, but it’s better to trust the chef and let he decides what to serve you! In return you will get innovative dishes that are spectacular, every bite is an explosion of flavor! The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable, offering great recommendations to complement your taste. The attention to detail in both presentation and taste makes every dish feel like a masterpiece. If you're in the mood for something truly exceptional and off the beaten path, this is a must-visit for anyone in Madrid looking for a blend of tradition and innovation.

Oh man, the flavors at this restaurant are out of this world! So many weird and interesting flavors that you’d swear would never go together, actually do and they work as a cohesive dish! Don’t come here if you’re looking for a burger or dish that you’ve had a thousand times before because you won’t find it. What you will find is food meticulously made with unique flavors that go well together and will make you wonder what sort of mad scientist the chef is. It was so good we ordered almost everything off the menu!

Not sure what the hype is about, this was disappointing. Were my expectations too high? We tried tasting menu which was really just them serving you 7 items from the menu of 7 items (or you can order any of them a la carte). First one was naan (except the bread wasn't anything like naan) with something resembling russian salad — pretty delicious. Then it went downhill from there: deep-fried fish was just ok, although little islands of spicy emulsion were nice. Falafels in curry were just ok. The spring roll was tasty but not particularly interesting. The wine that I asked to pair dishes with was pretty bad. At the end, they brought us the check that included 2 items that we never got. Turns out they forgot to serve us first 2 dishes from the tasting menu. Perhaps those were better? We'll never find out.

Doppelgänger is a diamond in the rough. A creative and delicious corner of the Mercado Antón Martín that offers small plates and a tasting menu suited to your party size. The daring flavour combos and real fusion dishes are a feast for the eyes and belly. For a reasonable price, you can try staples like their seabass and apple, the tamal and their signature palmera pastry with mole and pickled sweet onion. Don't leave without trying their electric flower sweet. The service is good and there's always a buzz from the market. The only thing for larger groups is the limited time between reservations, and the wine selection, which is natural and not to everyone's taste. Overall, a great place and somewhere I go back to time and time again.

We've visited Doppelgänger a handful of times now and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is very cool. The small setting and open kitchen bring a fun energy. The menu is always surprising and delicious with new items and classics that we always look forward to. The service is friendly and very knowledgeable. Looking forward to next time!

This unassuming spot with a dark and sexy speakeasy feel had some of the best drinks I’ve had in all of my travels. Friendly bar, staff and enjoyable vibe and just the type of food you expect to find. Spent two evenings and only wish we had something like this back home! Special mods for their Negroni, and of course, the best old-fashioned in all of the world!! Wonderful evenings out that will not be soon forgotten …. Thanks Doppelganger … Cheers!!

Superb, inventive, Spanish/Asian fusion food! Such real taste sensations at this little spot in Anton Martin market! Wonderful service in English and Spanish too! It's best to make a booking in advance!

A lesson in either how to make haute cuisine accessible, or what small plates dining should really be like. Drops the fork on a few dishes, but they are largely novel and well executed. The tasting menu option of eating until you’ve had enough is refreshing. Not much seating. Good service.
