9 Iconic Greasy Spoons for New Orleans-Style Diner Fare

"This Jefferson Parish favorite has a bunch of locations, all of which seem to have that proto-diner essence down pat despite opening in the ’90s. While none of them are currently 24/7, they remain an important part of late-night dining, particularly the location right by Ochsner. The blue plate specials include a country-fried steak and a catfish plate topped with Crawfish Julie sauce, two specialties that help define this mini-chain." - Clair Lorell, Eater Staff

Excellent food and service!! Great staff. A really nice little restaurant, with a retro feel. We loved it!

Ordered breakfast for delivery while visiting Nola. OMG Dot…. We are now bf. This food is delicious!! Just glad I decided to take a chance

Google
This place was really good. Quantity food. Very affordable. Around $12-13 for a plate full of meat, eggs, toast, and hashbrowns. Jefferson I believe was our server and she was so sweet and attentive. The whole atmosphere of the diner is retro and "blast from the past" but in a cool way. Will definitely be back.

Google
Great Diner! Service is always wonderful and the epitome of Southern Hospitality. Coffee is good, they have a simple yet good menu with neat variations. Today I had a good cheeseburger while my friend had the B9, a breakfast combo with chicken fried steak, hash browns and eggs. The fries were delicious, crispy and just right on salt. I've been a few times before and Dot's has never disappointed. Very much a classic diner near New Orleans!

We just love Dot’s Diner - Near Ochsner. It is set up and looks like the wonderful old diners we used to frequent years ago. The decor is lively and fun with a friendly atmosphere and great table service. The menu is breakfast and lunch and they have a varied selection of both. The food is great and it’s a very pleasant overall experience.

Google
First time to this location, and it seems more spacious than others. Nice and clean. And of course the food was great. I had the Who Dot burger, which I hadn't had in a long time. It did not disappoint! My wife wanted to try something different, so she got the Hamburger Steak! Well, different from what she normally gets at a Dot's anyway. She loved it! Afterwards we tried their cobbler au la mode. The blackberry was great! The Peach was ok but had a slight funny taste like crawfish?. But other than that, we enjoy this place.

Google
Absolutely loved this diner! Service on point! My cup was never empty! Coffee was very good! I had the biggest omlette ever! Would definitely visit again! Food came out hot and quick. Place gets packed so show up early.

Google
This? Now THIS is a diner. Hands down, 5 star service and 50 star food. Really glad I decided on Dots Diner for breakfast from all the other options. Didn’t want generic Waffle House while in New Orleans, didn’t want to risk going to a diner with possibly rough service, chose this based on the reviews and they did not disappoint!

Yelp
First time in Louisiana, New Orleans. This cute little spot came highly recommended from my partner's mom so here we are. The diner is 60's themed: cozy, quaint, retro ambiance. Menu offers a variety of breakfast items, sandwiches, and burgers. I got the Seafood Omelet and oh my gods is this thing MASSIVE, and packed with flavors! It had fried shrimp, mushrooms and crayfish meat in a gray gravy Julie, I choose hash browns and biscuits for my side (Waitress recommended the biscuit) those are the best biscuits I ever had! Highly recommend, we don't get food like this in the desert so this was such a joy to experience, Thank you so much!

Yelp
This place food is so good I could cry. The best biscuit I have ever had in my entire life. The are extremely kind also and move fast.

Yelp
Definitely worth trying out, small little place.. but had the diner feel. Staff was friendly, our waitress was attentive. Nothing fancy about the place.. but let's chat about the food.. I had the cheesesteak and fries my boyfriend had the fried catfish dinner with frys and green beans. My cheesesteak was cooked perfectly, great flavor and the frys were fresh with a good taste. His Catfish was very good according to him (I don't eat ugly fish lol) and he also complimented the frys. He didn't want the green beans so I tasted them and ended up eating the entire bowl. It was loaded with some sort of kilbasa sausage and bacon.. yum! Sorry I only grabbed a pic of my meal because he dove into his before I could get my camera out.. We will definitely go back, we both love these kind of places when the food is amazing and the price doesn't break the bank.

Yelp
Great classic diner style breakfast. I would recommend you either get there very early, or go with a very small party. The restaurant itself is very small.

Yelp
Excellent service with a filling breakfast. I ordered French toast and couldn't eat the entire meal. Food was hot and prepared quickly. Just what I needed after a long night shift.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was plentiful. The service was friendly. The ambiance could use some work.

Yelp
I just left from eating there at lunchtime on a Sunday. There were only people at four tables. I sat down by myself. I just ordered a patty melt with french fries. It took about 25 minutes for the food to come out, which I thought was ridiculous considering there weren't many people in there. The only time I saw my waitress was whenever she greeted me and then took my drink order. After me at my watch when another waitress came by, and she saw me looking at my watch, my food showed up. The patty melt was good, but the fries were starting to get cold. I immediately ate my food, paid and left. I was going to get a to go order for my wife, but I elected since it took 25 minutes just to get my food, I didn't feel like waiting in there another 30 minutes.

Yelp
We tried Dot's back in 2019 when we were visiting the area with friends and loved it. We returned a few days ago hoping to recapture the experience and it was even better! We love cafe's, bistros and coffee shops. Only rarely do we go to chain restaurants, but Dot's is the exception to that rule. Breakfast - or rather brunch - late breakfast (just before lunch) is our favorite meal of the day. Dot's is a mecca for brunch. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a lively mid-century Ma-Pa establishment. It's clean, bright and the servers were proud of the restaurant and presented themselves well. If you get tired of throwing your money away on overpriced, mediocre food, drop in to Dot's and have a professionally made meal without a lot of hoopla.

Yelp
Dirty diner. Butter served in a squeeze bottle. Eggs overly cooked. Dirty tables. Not recommended.

Yelp
Great breakfast place. Reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Good food. Daily lunch specials during the week.

Yelp
Such a cute place, I stopped in to place a to go order. Delicious food, I got the BLT with an egg for brunch, Yumm with sweet potato fries
google avatar

Yelp
I know Dot is Dot but ive been to this Dot twice and twice the food has been bad. Last time they overcooked the omelette so bad it was terrible. This time I had the pancakes and they were embarrassingly bad. The pancakes were way too thick and cooked on a dirty griddle. The bacon though was excellent, my friend ordered the BLT and that was probably the safest thing to order here.

Alexis C.

Yelp
This is really cute, however the it is an hour wait after ordering. little staff. The food was not okay. If your looking for some comfort food with a good atmosphere where tou can sit and talk four a while with buddies have at it.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a diner junky. I've gotta stop if I see one. I will say, very odd little spot but food wasn't bad at all. I'd return for the food but not the service/staff. Like I said this place was odd. The chefs cook in a room that has a window to the kitchen but they can only enter and exit through a door that's outside of the building. The staff is walking in and out in and out like customers. Some skeptical things were going on outside Dots Diner by the staff. Overall good food but due to the activities happening, breakfast took 45 min to arrive. Perhaps I'd try it again

Yelp
Do stop in. Beignet Sticks are a YES. You may even want to share them. Vibe is quiet in the evening and the staff attentive. Coffee was refilled cheerfully and with frequency That being said, loud talkers can appear. And then the atmosphere changes. We were here to meet up with a local friend. This chain was well know and a delight. Dot's would be fun to try for breakfast. Glad for friendly places like this as you drive into NOLA or if you need a NOLA break.

Yelp
My quest to eat at every Dot's location is now complete. If you're looking for a classic diner with good, reasonably priced, food find yourself any of Dot's five locations. In case you were not aware, I am a ridiculous human being. A while back one of my co-workers suggested we get breakfast for lunch and that Dot's is where we should go. We went, and it was great. That is when we decided we should visit every location and see which is the best. This location is probably the largest Dot's and it is located across the street from Ochsner's main campus. It also appears to be the newest location. So it's new and across from one of the biggest hospitals in the area. That must mean it is jam packed right? Sort of. We ended up here one day right around 11:00 a.m. While it was busy, it was not packed. As we finished our meal it started getting more crowded and had a wait. Moral of the story? Get there at 11:00. Service was friendly, but not as personal as some other locations. I attributed this to how much larger and busier this location was. The food was classic breakfast fare. The eggs were cooked perfectly as were the meats. Dot's definitely knows how to make a solid breakfast. So where does this rate for me in comparison to the other four Dot's? I'd say this is #3.

Yelp
Me and my husband were in New Orleans visiting our family member in the hospital at Oschner medical center so we dropped in at Dots Dinner to get something to eat and it was delicious love the pancakes and the service was awesome so polite and very helpful, love that place, that's a awesome awesome place, we will be back.

Lonnie R.

Yelp
Service has always been good. Food is good. It's Dots, not expecting 5 star experience. What I am expecting is a clean restaurant. Arrived at 6:30, dirty floods and sticky table. Please correct
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Take out and dine-in available right now. Everything was clean (cleaning was constant while we were there), everyone was masked and gloved, and food was delicious. If you're looking for atmosphere by the way, theirs can't be beat. On to the food - I don't know how they make the breakfast so tasty at this location, but they do! The build your omelette is my favorite because you get so much food, and it's fresh. Always go with the biscuit instead of toast as it's light and buttery. Their grits have a great texture though I find them to be under flavored sometimes, which they do on purpose so that you can make them to how you like them. The hashbrowns are to-die for every single time. This is the only location I'll go to, and this recent visit reminded me why. Love this breakfast diner!

Yelp
I can't brag on this restaurant enough. I was surprisingly shocked at how tasty the food was. I passed this restaurant so many times over the years but never stopped because of the local chains I always visit. But oh boy! I'm so glad I did stop in. I order the Bit Dots Breakfast and it was by far the best breakfast I've had. They gave me so much food I could not eat all of it, I could have easily made two meals out of it. But the biscuits were so delightful, they are baked in the oven the fried in butter on a flat top grill. Y'all about ridiculously good! The grits were thick and creamy, eggs light a fluffy, sausage patties were fried to perfection and pancakes were better than IHOP's. The atmosphere reminded me of an old diner from the show Saved By the Bell! The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu. I will certainly go back.

Yelp
As I have said before, I am not much of a breakfast guy, but when it is the weekend and the lady wants to go try a new spot, you do what you are told sometimes. Thankfully, my lady is awesome and knows the best places to try. That my friends, is why I am writing about Dots Diner. If you listen to the radio on your drive into work in New Orleans, you have heard the commercials. Ole Dot letting you know to come on in and enjoy yourself. It is everything you can think of from that commercial and more! The food is amazing! I ordered the chicken and Waffles, which did not come together, (I was not mad at all at this by the way!), a grilled biscuit, and some bacon. It was a perfect meal to have on a Saturday and I will continue to get this. The waffle was fluffy, the chicken was that perfect crisp you deserve, and that biscuit was superb. The place can get busy quickly, but if you get there at about 9 ish, you should be good to go. I am glad to be close to this place. I plan on coming more!

Yelp
Perfect Spot for a Quick bite! Ya gotta try Dots. Plain and simple. I've been down in Nola on and off for months after a recent medical procedure at Ochsner accross the street. This place is the diner you see on TVs. Quick food, fun waitresses, loud patrons. I mean it's like you're in a sitcom. DONT come here if you're looking for something this place is not. It is a diner. Fast, greasy fried perfection. Not healthy nonsense. I got the chicken fried steak, eggs and hash browns. Not mad at it at all!
google avatar

Yelp
A cute diner with great service and yummy food. I had the Cajun burrito with hashbrowns and orange juice. The decor is really nice and cozy too. Amazing place!

Yelp
Multiple places have been great in the past, but one or two things can reduce their appeal. While the food still good, at typical Dot's diners, they've done one thing to absolutely run the experience and that's at the cash register. This force tipping thing starting at 18% is ridiculous. I'm absolutely not going to be forced to give a tip for bad service when the waitress let us sit there for 10 minutes without acknowledging us finally acknowledged us and then was another 10 minutes coming back to take our order acting like it was our fault, I believe that her words were well. I've been busy, but I'm here now without being prompted. So you expect bad service on a Saturday morning when the place is filled even though they've got tons of waitresses the manager was completely asleep at the switch, not realizing several tables were not being cared for and two people/families walked out. What does that cost you in revenue if you do that every Saturday morning? But again this has to do also with the forest tipping wear when you go to get your bill and give them your credit card it pops up and says 18%, 20%, or 22% tip. If you change or do something to reflect a 15% tip or no tip, the waitress and cashier/waitress are right there watching you. So you weren't as attentive whenever we were sitting down waiting for service but you're very attentive when it comes to that money money we're going to give you at the end, which we still did more than 20%, we just make sure we did it manually. does this bother me the first time that I saw this may be three months ago at dots but I've been back a half dozen times cents, but today was my last day. Whoever the corporate person is that has decided to build is 18% minimum tipping into their food would do well to understand why many of us will not be back.

Yelp
Dot's Diner: where pork chops are a breakfast side and the butter comes in giant squeeze tubes. Bonus feature: there's a casino alcove. Go here. The food is delicious and the service sublime.

JOE M.

Yelp
Been going to dots for years. this last time was terrible. breakfast isnt hard to make, but when you burn the bacon, and dont put the proper cheese, or toast on my plate, Im going to question if the cook cares at all. Who would actually eat bacon burned this bad? anyway, it saddens me to write this during a pandemic, but its really pathetic to get served this, in an empty restaurant.

Michelle J.

Yelp
The club sandwich is served warm. I didn't expect that, but the grilled meats made for a great, salty, delicious flavor. The fries were solid. The beignet sticks were delicious!! Overall, hit the spot!
google avatar

Kristal W.

Yelp
Great diner! Super clean. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Ive always heard the commercials but never came. I definitely recommend. The food is classic diner food--really good and very filling with big portions. A+
google avatar

Theresa M.

Yelp
Ended up here cause Waffle House was doing take out only. Not my favorite breakfast place but adequate for the price.
google avatar

Gazelle L.

Yelp
These pork chops were well seasoned. It wasn't like Waffle House with just a little salt and pepper. These are to die for, and their hash browns are spot on ! I can't wait to come again !!! They are understaffed, but it was worth the wait.
google avatar

Yelp
I got Hash Brown all the way , Biscuit & Sausage Gravy, Toast & . Simply delicious for a lovely Sunday afternoon

Jamie B.

Yelp
Server came to our table with mask around her chin. When asked if she would mind putting it on please, she walked away saying she would have someone else take care of us. Second server, Olivia, was lovely and courteous, service was prompt and efficient, and the food was great diner classics. The one star review is based strictly on the attitude of the server. Everyone forgets from time to time. Had she simply apologized and pulled her mask up, then no big deal - but that attitude is COMPLETELY unacceptable.
google avatar

Yelp
Although it has been well over 10 years since my last visit - I always forget about Dot's, it was as if I went back in time. The biggest challenge here is the parking. There is very little off-street parking & the location sits right on the edge in the residential area. Also, prepare to be accosted by a panhandler or two going both in and out. Those are the only negatives. The coffee was strong & hot. Kathy had the Lumberjack ($7.99) which is aptly named. I chose the Crawfish Creole Queen ($8.99) which can best be described as a southern style crawfish Bennie. I added a side of bacon ( it came out extra crispy - just a bit overdone for me). This is a 24 hour joint with breakfast 'round the clock. I love that. The tables are wobbly, the chairs mismatched, and the joint is a bit cramped, but for certain friends out there - this is proof the world does not end at the parish line. You know who you are!

Steve W.

Yelp
Friendly, laid back, decor was low key, we got take out, service was quick, not a long wait for food, which was excellent and cost was substantially less than most other restaurants in New Orleans.

Jane D.

Yelp
Only two waitresses and no cashier at 11:30. It took almost 30 minutes to get served. The sausage was so cold that I put it in the waitresses hand so she could feel it. Precious little atmosphere. Don't like spicy? DON'T order the breakfast sausage. Took another 30 minutes for one of the TWO waitresses to check us out at the register. NEVER AGAIN.
google avatar

Chadwick C.

Yelp
Always great food. Remodel is nice. Great breakfast, great pancakes, bacon cooked just right, and BUTTER IN A SQUEEZE BOTTLE! Their club sandwich is very good, and a favorite late night snack...meal. Wonderful milk shakes, friendly service and to-go orders are common. Also, waitr is available to deliver your order to Ocshner & you can skip the cafeteria food for a meal.

Richard S.

Yelp
I always look for a hole in the wall place for breakfast when staying away from home. Dot's fits the bill and everything was great. I ordered way too much and then tried to eat way too much of it because it was good homestyle breakfast. Service was good for diner style restaurant and everyone working was happy and it showed in their treatment of all the customers in their building while I was there. Give them a shot. If you are looking for upscale, it's not your place. If your looking to fill yourself up with good food then this might be your place.
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Full menu, full staff, very slow service. I was one of two customers in the building. None of the staff were wearing masks. COVID IS REAL!
google avatar

Alexandra E.

Yelp
Being a Latino in New Orleans hasn't always been an easy task. But over the past couple of years people's minds have become more open minded and understand that we live in an international city. Me and my friends walked in to have dinner and the waitress heard one word of Spanish and looked at us like we're nothing and proceeded to basically run us out of the place. Really disappointed in the racism and ignorance in her. And how this establishment could hire someoNe like this. Shame.
google avatar

Alexia H.

Yelp
Really good breakfast food!!! Loved dining at this spot while in NOLA with my family. Everything we had was fresh and really tasty. Not only was the food great but the service was even better, our waitress was so friendly. The inside of the place reminded me of a diner from the 50s. It was pretty clean, didn't make me feel gross or uncomfortable. I remember it being located kinda in the cut, like it's definitely not close to anywhere jumping or downtown. The prices were very affordable. Can't wait to come back and try more things!
google avatar

Jimmy T.

Yelp
This was my second time to Dots in the past 4 years. The first time was delicious and great. This visit was very disappointing. This time I ordered the Orleans style grilled catfish. This style is on the menu and describes it coming with a crawfish sauce on it. The standard version of the catfish does not come with the crawfish sauce and is less expensive. When the dish was delivered, it did not have the crawfish sauce on it. When I asked about the sauce my waitress argued with me that this is how it is made and that it does not come with a crawfish sauce. She brought me the menu and she was surprised to find she was wrong. After about 10 minutes she brought me a bowl of the crawfish sauce to add to the now cold fish. As she left I asked for a refill on my empty glass. She asked me "will there be anything else sir" In a very bothered tone. When I took a bight the fish it was so salty tasting I could not eat it. I can understand and forgive the waitress for not knowing everything about the menu. I cannot understand or forgive her rude behavior and acting like I was bothering her for a correct dish and a refill on a drink. That is her job! Probably won't be back.
google avatar

Rodney M.

Yelp
Best bang for your buck in the Big Easy!! The service is outstanding, never had to ask for a refill for anything! Super friendly staff as well! I know where I'll be eating every time I'm in New Orleans!
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
I placed an a pick up order and the customer service left a lot to be desired. I found the employee I initially spoke to, to be rude. I get it's a diner but common societal norms isn't asking for a lot. The lady at the register did crack a smile so 2 stars for that. I got my order and I was pretty bummed. My pancakes were horrible. Dry, falling apart. No taste. No amount of syrup made it right. My hash browns were burnt and salty. Inedible and repugnant. I was surprised because I have eaten here before and thought the food was pretty solid. So this event was a shock. I can't say I will be returning given the number of options in the area .
google avatar

Yelena Y.

Yelp
This is a solid breakfast option if you get there early enough, as it quickly fills with regulars! The food is tasty and the service seems to be run like a well oiled machine. You will be in and out with a full belly as quick as you need to be, and I like that!
google avatar

Casey R.

Yelp
I could have spent the weekend in jail and received better food. An absolute let down. Very cute and casual inside, and friendly service. However what ever is going on in that kitchen is horrifying. Loaded hash browns not cooked. The cheese taste like the knock off generic brand and it's not even melted. Sausage was like those jimmy dean frozen patties. Toast not buttered. Hair in my sandwich. How can a cook plate that trash up and feel good about sending it out to a paying customer. I should have stayed home and cooked breakfast in my pajamas. They took off the sandwich but still ended up paying 20 something bucks got a breakfast plate, soda, oj, and hash browns. Over priced.

Yelp
today we had lunch at Dots. Worst food and experience ever. We arrived at 1:30pm. waited for waitress to clean a table for us and many tables were with dirty dishes. we placed our order. one breakfast, one pork chop dinner, one hamburger dinner and one liver and onion dinner. I asked about the vegetable of they day and was told california blend. we requested double vegetables instead of mash potatoes. my husbands liver and onions came out with mash potatoes and peas. i asked waitress about our order of vegetables and she stated they must have ran out of the calif blend. i told her My order of hamburger and onions with vegetables I requested cali blend I do not want peas. she came back n stated that they do have the california blend but veggies were in freezer. Husband food cold, fatherinlaw's breakfast cold, mother in laws pork chop small portion and tough ,mash potatoes cold even bottom of plate was cold with no vegetables. then my plate arrive hamburger patties overcooked small n no vegetables. waitress brought all plates at different times and had to go and microwave cold plates. eventually we were brought our vegetables however we didn't get double portion like we requested instead of mash potatoes. My mother in law told the waitress when she came back to the table that she didn't bring her vegetables but it was to late to bring them now. Waitress was apologetic but made excuse they had a busy day but should not have been at our expense.I can assure you We will never eat at this restaurant again. The workers were more concerned about having conversations with each other rather than taking care of the paying customers. please beware of terrible and worst dinning experience EVER! Just when I thought it could not get any worst , the male cook came out of the kitchen and went to use the bathroom in the "Ladies Room'". Unbelievable . Unacceptable.

Yelp
I really wanted to give this place no stars. My older brother, his girlfriend, her coworker, my little brother, and I thought it would be a good place to go. We walked in and sat down. Flag 1: no greeting, no "Welcome to Dot's", nothing. The table was slightly dirty so my little brother began cleaning it off with a napkin. A waitress came and handed my brother's girlfriend a stack of menus, and began wiping the table. Flag 2: Again, no greeting. She just handed the menus over without a word. My little brother couldn't find a trash can to put the dirty napkin in so he asked the waitress where the trash was. She stopped wiping and held out her hand for him to place the napkin in. Flag 3: She didn't open her mouth to answer him. A simple "I can get that for you" would have sufficed. She proceeds to take the napkin and finishes wiping the table. My older brother, who sat there patiently waiting for the waitress to say something, abruptly announces to us, "We can go." That's just what we did. When the waitress notices that we're standing up, she FINALLY opens her mouth and says, "Are y'all leaving?" Flag, flag, FLAG! You only acknowledge our presence when we decide to exit the restaurant?! Seriously? I am in no way, shape, or form of a racist; I respect all people. However, I do believe our skin color played a factor in how we we treated. We were the only African American group in the establishment. Earlier that same day, a friend of mine left a negative review of Dot's Diner on Facebook stating she received similar treatment. I will not be returning or supporting this type of business.

Yelp
Okay, it's a diner. Don't expect fine food. That said, it was a good example of the type. 24/7, breakfast always available. Service was super friendly. Place was clean and trying for that retro look. I got the feeling this was a lot more of a local place than a tourist joint. Which is nice. Many of the French Quarter restaurants claim to be local places but you rarely see locals there except for special occasions. Too expensive, for one thing, even though usually good. This was one of the few meals we had that didn't run $100+. I had the bacon cheeseburger. Good burger. Son 1 had a really good chicken fried steak slider. Son 2 had an excellent BLT. Wife had a good club sandwich. Simple stuff maybe, but done well. And that was exactly what we wanted.
