Double Crispy Bakery

We couldn't stop eating. Everything is tasty and cheap. I got the piglet bread, the milk cream bun, and the chicken sandwich. All only for 7.50. If you go early in the morning, everything is warm. Although it is a cantonese place, it is easy to look for the prices.

This bakery had lots of little treats worth trying but I only had room for a little egg tart at the time. Opted for the darkened version of the tart. Very tasty with a light flavor profile. I would go back and try more of the other baked goods when I have a chance.

Got the portugese egg tarts and the original HK style egg tarts and they are amazing! They had a great assortment of other baked goods like moon cakes and buns. Will definitely go back to try the others! They only accept cash, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on visiting.

This place looked good so I decided to try a few things here. I got a "Macau Style" custard tart (Portuguese egg tart), a traditional Custard Egg tart, and a piece of their Coconut cake. Everything was good. The "Macau-style" was similar to creme brulee. But, it had more pastry dough. The traditional Custard Egg tart was my favorite. The Coconut cake was like a sponge-cake with some coconut flavor and texture. There was a piece of white chocolate on top. Many of the other cakes looked appealing. The kid behind the counter was very helpful and nice. Ca$h only. 🙄

Mildly sweet, with just the right amount of sugar to satisfy your sweet tooth. The center is eggy, custardy, and not overly rich. The sponge cake. Soft, moist, and generously sized. At only $1.75, it's the definition of simple happiness. They also have mooncakes all year round. Really enjoyed the green tea mooncake. The depth of tea flavor really comes through. Also tried the round-shaped mixed nut pastry. It has huge chunks of nuts, seeds, and candied watermelon, all together with egg yolk! An interesting mix of textures and flavors.

Got the egg tart $2 and Portuguese egg tart $2.25. egg tart is like most other egg tarts, sweet, jello like center. Pretty good, 8/10. The Portuguese one is a bit better as the center was more custard like and had a bit of caramel flavor. 8.3/10.

Came here to buy a birthday cake for my girlfriend's birthday. I bought a two pound cake, which ended up being HUGE. We had 11 people in our party that ate the cake, and there was still almost half of the cake left over. In all honesty, we probably only needed 1 pound (the lady at the counter said we needed 2), but it made for good leftovers. The cake itself was tasty; not too sweet but still had great flavor and was filled with fruit in the layers. Place is known for their egg tarts, so will definitely come back in the future to try some. Good to know that this is a cash only spot (there are ATMs and bank branches around the area). Would definitely recommend for Asian style desserts!

Love their po tats (Portuguese egg tarts) Absolutely my fam and my favorite from here. Po tat prices have been increasing over the years (now $2.25 for one). It used to be under $2! My parents have tried the pastries from here and like it. I personally haven't had them but I will 100% always come back for the egg tarts. The place is small and they used to have seats for you to enjoy your food but I think after pandemic, they no longer have that. Staff are friendly and respectful!

This Macau egg tart is a revelation. Flaky crust, luscious custard, perfect sweetness. Simple setting, extraordinary taste.

On the quest to find the best egg/po tats in the city, my next stop was Double Crispy Bakery. They stand out in that even though I went close to closing, they somehow were able to keep their po tats warm, and the crust crumbly and fresh. I enjoyed the crumbly texture of the crust, and the po tat wasn't super jammy on the inside like I was hoping it would be, but did have a nice char. As far as the custard texture goes they're definitely in the middle in terms of super eggy jammy to cooked eggy solid. It was subtly sweet, and the crust had a nice savoriness to it. Beware, they only take cash. Solid spot, and doing great by keeping the egg tarts warm. I will go back to return their dan tat. Don't sleep on their other items too! They have standard chinese bakery fare worth checking out.

I got their roast pork bun, and it came with plenty of filling! The roast pork was alright, I prefer when the pieces are bigger rather than smaller so it's less messy. I like the bread! So smooth and buttery.

I came here for their egg tarts and Double Crispy Bakery did not disappoint. At $2 for one egg tart, it's a little steep and pricier than some of the other places (~$1.50 at other places for similar size and taste). As the name of the bakery suggests, the crust was flaky and heftier than the other bakeries that I tried. The sturdy crust makes it good for transporting. The egg custard had good flavor and consistency. This is a solid egg tart; I'd be happy to come back here again for more.

Char Siew Bao (Roast Pork Bun) was pretty darn good. I was looking for an alternative since my go-to spot was closed that day. It was like $2? a bit pricey than the average, but definitely worth the price. [I did find a piece of bone in the cha siew filling so deducting a star]. It will prob be an alternative spot for me. Portuguese Egg Tart - Also this was the first time having it at this bakery. Verdict - not flakey enough, but the custard filling was yummy.

I went by this bakery and decided to go in. Tried a regular egg tart and a bee nest cake. The egg tart was cold and was just okay...not that tasty. I would go elsewhere for egg tart. The bee nest cake had a chewier layer full of holes like a bee hive and a cake part beneath it that was soft and bouncy. It was okay, not too sweet. There are some long aluminum tables and stools for seating inside. Of the myriad of Chinatown bakeries, I don't think I would come back. Cash Only.

Still my go to spot for (regular) egg tarts when we come visit fam in Manhattan! Hits my requirements: + eggy custard + flaky crust (not cookie crust) + good ratio of custard to crust We usually plan to go early on busy days as they may not have any towards the end of the day. Amazing amazing Cantonese pastries. Beware it's cash only but the egg tarts that they're so famous for are literally only $2 so just...bring some cash and get a bunch! Service is prompt and fast, and there's a small space to eat your freshly baked tarts. Highly recommend coming here - it's right off the Grand St. subway stop so you can bring a bunch of goodies home after easily!

A small shop very well lit and clean. At busy times you would see a small line of people waiting for the Portuguese egg tart here. I tried it and it was excellent. They keep it in a warming display case so you always have warm and crispy egg tart. $2.25 a piece which is not too expensive.

Usual local asian bakery and sandwiches. They do have bubble tea and different teas. Heads-up cash only at the moment. It's hard to get seated. To-go place near the park. Get some snacks, breads, tea/coffee, as you're in the neighborhood. It's a busy bakery, little loud and a lot of foot traffic.

This is review for the Honeycomb cake Malaysian style. Dark brown malted goodness, the flavor reminds me of malted dark brown sugar/toffee/caramel, has nice chewy texture like puto. Th is no honey in it! It takes its name from the interesting honeycomb interior. Love that it's not too sweet. It is not a common item available in Chinese bakeries in this area. Trypophobics beware-consume blindfolded. No frills service. Small sit down area for munching. Egg tarts are good here, it's the star main item. Variety of other assorted bakery items sold on display. Coffee, tea drinks made to order. Cash only.

Best pork floss bun I've ever had! It's both savory and sweet with some sugary crust to the pastry part of it. We purchased about a dozen things and they were all very tasty. Busy Saturday morning but the line went pretty fast. Will return!

I've been to this small Chinese bakery a handful of times primarily for their outstanding cheap egg tarts; both HK and Macau style (though the latter is better.) The Macau version/Po Tat is 25¢ more and it's worth it. Nicely fluffy with a stronger egg flavor. Also not overly sweet compared to other spots. This might be low-key the best version I've eve had though I'm almost happy (in a selfish way) that they don't have the lines from the other famous egg tart spots. The Hong Kong style/Dan Tat is a close second but it's still solid. I've gone there just before closing and earlier and it always tastes fresh and delicious with a good egg flavor and a similarly flaky crispy crust. No complaints either with the only better one I know being in Flushing. I've tried other pastries here which are just alright but go here for the specialty. Friendly person in front as well.

Casual Chinese bakery that seems popular with the locals. I came in on a Monday afternoon and the seatings were packed with Asian uncles and aunties chatting with eating other. This place is known for their egg tarts so I got some to try. The egg tart tastes good, the price has increased to $2 each and size is a bit small but they definitely don't skimp on the egg filling. The other items are also around $2 each.

Great selection, always has people whenever I stop in, and cash only (like many places in Chinatown!) Come early if you want the egg tarts to be fresh and warm! The regular egg tarts are $1.50 and often sold out by the afternoon. They always have the Portuguese ones available. The egg tarts truly live up to the bakery name - crispy, light and fluffy! You can see each layer of the crust I also tried their pineapple bun but did not think it was great, but definitely the 5 stars is for their egg tart! I went several times within my month there, and they have other selection of baked goods.

This is a classic Chinese pastry shop. Except it looks very clean, spacious, and organized. I recommend their Portuguese egg custards here.. so delicious! Soft and perfectly sweetened, creamy filling. Fluffy and buttery outer shell. The other pastries look yummy as well. Very fast service.

While we did not order anything at Double Crispy Bakery, the food looked incredible. It is difficult to find mooncakes, and this place had so many different flavors for sale. Also, the homemade breads looked incredible. I will need to make another stop here in the future and actually buy something. We definitely missed out on some good food.

My favorite item at Double Crispy Bakery is the kaya bun. With a sweet, crumbly, perfectly textured shell on top and sweet--but not too sweet--creamy filling inside, the kaya bun is oh-so satisfying and worth the $1.75 (25 cents more than the very good version at Tao Hong Bakery, whose kaya bun is excellent but whose exterior bread is just slightly inferior). However, the cheese twist ($2.25) was extremely disappointing. The bread was slightly sweet, but overall there was not enough cheese and meat. Overall, it was bland. I walked away feeling like I had just consumed a lot of carbs, my stomach full but my taste buds craving something more. I'll stick with the sweet buns in the future. The prices at Double Crispy are generally on par or slightly more than other Chinatown bakeries. It does offer a larger selection of breads and pastries and has a larger, more well-lit, and more welcoming interior than many of their hole-in-the-wall counterparts.

My friend and I were visiting from San Diego and stumbled across this bakery. We had a great experience with their wonderful friendly staff.I had a their moon cake and it was delicious!

I can't find any bakery with good Portuguese egg tarts. Was just walking around the city and the name itself got me "double crispy bakery". It was no regret! The Portuguese egg tarts was sooo good and hot too! $1.75 for a tart.

(specifically for the egg tarts) - we chose a random bakery in chinatown and was really surprised at how good these egg tarts were. Definitely best I've had in this city so far. We got there when the egg tarts had just come out of the oven so they were warm - you would take a bite and see steam coming out of the egg custard filling. cash only!

The pictures just don't do justice! You can take the freshness of the peanut, the rice is soft and we keep buying more and more! We are never a fan of bee nest cake. But this place is so buzzing!

Standard Asian bakery with an assortment of baked goods. I was craving some Portuguese egg tarts and stumbled upon this place. I got half a dozen of the egg tarts and I think they were particularly delicious when you heat them up a little. I also like how you can get a box for the egg tarts if you are looking to get some as a gift. This is definitely a stable place to grab some Portuguese egg tarts!

I got 4 Portuguese $1.75 each and 4 reg egg tarts $1.50 each. I mostly bring Chinese pastries to my parents but this time L wanted some for ourselves since they were so highly rated. I completely agree.. I think the Portuguese ones here are one of the best egg tarts I've had and prob better than the one in Flushing. Nice, flaky crust, egg is really creamy, perfect amount of sweetness. The reg egg tart is good too but just a lil dryer, not as sweet.. Eat the reg first, then the Portuguese... The egg tarts look a lil smaller but there's more egg filling so it kinda evens out. I prefer more custard than pastry. Big plus, they're a lot cheaper than the ones in Queens so I also bought a loaf of bread and a lil bag of cute mini cakes for my mom. My parents eat them for breakfast or with coffee. Lady at the cashier was nice.

A nice place to come get some cheap buns, pastries, cake, or bread. Definitely more of a grab and go kind of place, though theres seating available inside. Service is no-nonsense in a pleasant, efficient sort of way. Almost everything here is around $2-$8, which is very nice for the city. My friend and I tried their egg tarts, pineapple buns and steamed buns. Though this place wouldn't be a priority on my list of places to come back to, everything was pretty good. I was especially happy with the steamed buns since I'd been craving them that day!

I tried the egg tart (not Portuguese), coconut bun, pineapple moon cake, lotus moon cake, and winter melon moon cake. The egg tart was 7.5/10 and good for the price! It hits for spot if you're craving egg tarts. These egg tarts taste almost exactly like the one from Tao Hong Bakery a block away so I don't think you can go wrong with either bakery. Coconut bun was 5/10. It was dry and a little bland. The moon cakes were 6/10. The filling texture was more sticky and chewy -- different from what I'm used to. I liked that they were not too sweet and greasy. Points off for my lotus moon cake because it tasted like durian. They do sell durian moon cakes so I'm pretty sure my lotus moon cake got mixed with the durian filling. It was sadly disgusting.

My Malaysian Chinese Mom loves chinese custard tarts so she bought 6 of them for my son, herself and me. I ordered chicken and mushroom buns and roast pork buns (bao) to steam for breakfast and snacks. Easy snacks and good prices.

We ordered the Macau Egg tart for $2. It was extremely creamy and fluffy, as well as not too sweet. Good Egg Tart.

After being left with a bad taste in our mouths from another bakery in town, we decided to stop by this bakery for egg tarts. We chose it because the decals on the front window were close ups of egg tarts. It was a sign from above, figuratively. These egg tarts did not disappoint. Perfect sweetness and consistency of the custard. The crust held its own yet still had the textbook flakiness of an egg tart. Conveniently located a block west of Grand Street.

Strolled in last night and was amazed at my luck, amazing egg tarts! I also had a coffee rollup thing that was amazzzzzing! I don't remember the name of the young man there last night but he was so very kind and friendly and humble and inviting! Will defs be back to try more

The crust to egg filling ratio is perfect, the texture of the custard was silky, and it wasn't overly sweet. Best part is, they served it warm which I think made my experience all the more better. I love checking and supporting out all the different bakeries in Chinatown, put this one on your list!

Not to be confused with dirty laundry that's been in your gym bag for 3 weeks (Double Crinkly), twin animals scuttling across a country road at night (Double Crittery), or my jokes lately (Double Cringey). This is an insanely popular and busy and adorable bakery in Chinatown Manhattan, right in the busiest part of the area and usually packed wall to wall and counter to door. Double Crispy is underheralded and underrated, a local gem popular with those who love traditional authentic Asian bakeries, and one which has a bunch of great stuff and made me detour from my pre-ordained plan to come here and sample the wares... and the wheres too. And if you like Barbie's sexy, sultry voice, that's because it's "Double Whispery", or "Double Wispy" if you prefer. And if you think I'm wise beyond my years that's because I'm "Double Wistful." And if you're sick of me complaining, that's because I'm "Double Whingey." And after Corona and Trump and all the psycho right wing gun "pro-life" hypocrites that hold America back from being the bastion of freedom and progression that it could and should be... I need a Double Whiskey.

Popular Asian bakery centrally located in Chinatown, at the busy intersection of Grand/Bowery. We came by earlier in the year, when all the food items were on tables around the perimeter of the shop. Rows and rows of baked goods still being offered. The place was bustling with locals and tourists, so it's a prime spot. We grabbed a dozen of the Portuguese egg tarts (Po Tats), known to be their specialty. Word on the street is they're some of the best in Chinatown. Also got some wife cakes (pastries filled with candied melon, sweetened nuts and other goodies), and hot dog scallion bun. The egg tarts were perfectly flakey, custard was smooth and creamy. Very good Po Tat, though not more distinguishing in taste than many other NYC bakeries. Classic milk buns and pastries we tried were all good, making it a good carb stop in Chinatown.

You have to try it for yourself! BIG RECOMMENDATION!! I reccomend the egg tarts, honeycomb cake, and sponge cake!

Fresh and delicious!!! Great price!! I lived in China and coming here after being in the states for 10 years was amazing. I love red bean rolls... this place didn't disappoint. I actually went back again 2 days to bring some back home.
