Restaurants and Bars to Watch the 2019 Oscars in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Inside the Kimpton Hotel Palomar is the soundstage-inspired lounge Double Take. Not only will the viewing party start at 5 p.m., but lead bartender Sarah L.M. Mengoni created cocktails inspired by Marvel’s smash movie “Black Panther” along with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s “A Star is Born.”" - Mona Holmes

We’ve stayed at the Hotel Palomar a few times before. The restaurant is open 7am to 10pm. The fish in the fish taco is very generous considering it’s an appetizer. I’ve had it as my main course especially when I’m not super hungry. They had a wine happy hour with generous pours in this visit. Definitely great if you’re staying at the hotel or nearby.

Google
One of the best restaurants in the Kimpton world. Raquel and Alejandro are the best. The drinks were delightful and the food was so yummy! The Watermelon Cress salad was so good, I had to try and recreate it at home because I loved it so much. Can’t wait to visit again!

Delicious food. Fresh. Well-seasoned. Great portions. Only complaint: $5 for a cup of tea & $10 for iced coffee. Super friendly employees. Vibrant atmosphere.

Stayed at the hotel for a week. Ate here twice. Dinner for two: ordered chicken wings, fries, and salmon dinner. Salmon dinner was very oily. Breakfast roasted potatoes were also oily. Hot chocolate station well stocked. Muffins are available. The staff operate more like family do it was nice having my wine and talking with them. Check hours

Google
Double Take?? More like DOUBLE CHECK your food for metal pieces, half way eating my omelette breakfast, I found a thick metal string in my food. Looks like it came from a metal scrub! Food was also nasty and overpriced! Don’t come here!

Nice breakfast and even nicer dinner. It’s a must have if staying in the hotel.

Double Take is a restaurant in the Kimpton Palomar hotel. We’re fans of the Kimpton brand having stayed at a number of their hotels all over the U.S. They’re a great boutique hotel chain with benefits you get used to, such as the complimentary wine hour at 5pm. We were here for brunch, far too early to take advantage of the free wine hour, but to be fair we didn’t realize when we picked the restaurant that it was located in a Kimpton…so walking in to the lobby was a pleasant and familiar surprise. I had the egg sandwich choosing biscuit for the bread, with white cheddar cheese and no the sausage. It came with hash browns and a salad. The biscuit was perfectly crunchy on the outside and fine on the inside but seemed like it may have been reheated. (Am I the only one who has a sixth sense for when biscuits have been reheated?) It tasted good but the cheese needed more of a presence. The hash browns looked great. You’ll definitely salivate looking at them…They were tasty on the inside though, perhaps, a little more greasy than I wanted. There also wasn’t salt and pepper at the table which I definitely needed for these.. My wife had the Grain Bowl which we had to send back as it came topped with parmesan cheese…my wife doesn’t eat dairy and the menu didn’t list parmesan as an ingredient. I’m a big fan of menus that list all the visible ingredients of a dish…so unfortunately we had to send it back to get them to redo it without it. The dish looked beautiful either way, the mushrooms were delicious, but in the end it was very barley heavy…the other ingredients needed more of a presence to add more flavor to this dish. It definitely wasn’t busy when we were there so i guess brunch, at least on a Saturday around noon isn’t so much of a thing…but they did only have one person working there handling the coffee counter and waiting tables so service, in particular when we had to alert them about the Grain Bowl was a bit slow. On the plus side there’s all kinds of fun games to play in adjacent rooms, including a full sized pool table and skeeball, that are all free to use, so you’re bound to have a good time when you’re there.

Yelp
Double Take, located within the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Los Angeles, offers a blend of good service and a relaxed yet romantic ambiance. The bar was staffed by just one person who handles everything when I was there, including serving drinks and meals, which can lead to slower service times. The space features a games lounge with free games, sports playing on TV, and a stylish bar area with dimmed lighting, making it a cozy spot for unwinding. The menu is on the pricier side, catering primarily to hotel guests, but the $15 credit provided by the resort fee can be applied toward the bill. The 50/50 burger, priced at $26, is a highlight, served with a side of fries and offering a good portion size. The garlic fries are delicious. The burger bun was dry and stale, the baked mozzarella was tasteless, but the burger patty was delicious. Other dishes, such as the chicken and waffles and desserts, have smaller portions that are not ideal for sharing. The wine reception, held daily from 5-6 PM, is a nice touch for guests looking to relax before dinner. However, the service can be slow, even when the restaurant isn't busy. During my visit, it took 20 minutes to receive the burger despite only two tables being occupied. If you're pressed for time, such as checking out of the hotel, it's better to stick to ordering a drink instead of a full meal. Overall, while Double Take has its charms, it's unlikely I'd visit the restaurant if I weren't staying at the Kimpton Hotel.

Yelp
Honestly, as far as hotel restaurants go, this place was very good. Strong menu with a variety of options for lunch and dinner. Staff was polite. This space mixed in well with the rest of the first floor of the hotel. We ordered a steak sandwich and a chicken Caesar salad. Flavor of the chicken Caesar was good. It could've used more dressing and it would have been nice for the chicken to be cut up and tossed in with the salad. Also would probably be better in a bowl than on a flat plate. The steak sandwich was actually amazing. Very well executed. Steak was done to my liking. Huge cut of meat for a sandwich (it was like a full strip steak). Sauce and veggies were good. Bread could have been thinner. Fries on the side were excellent

Yelp
Last month I stayed in Westwood and this was my go to spot. The staff is engaging, the food is good. The ambiance is delightful.

Yelp
I got the ahi salmon poke and the lobster bisque! Went all seafood but it was amazing, didn't think the food would be as good but it exceeded my expectations for sure. Great service overall but very nice place to do your work.

Yelp
Salmon - good Scalloped potatoes - good but needs more seasoning Chicken wings - NO SEASONING AT ALL Side of Tequila sauce for wings - spicy and good For the prices... the above plus two cocktails ($100+tip)... we'll pass on returning. Service from Matthew was good and food came out PIPING hot. I will be fair and give them that.

Yelp
The food was good, service was good, and the ambience was overall good. They forgot about my croissant, but after I told them they made it

Yelp
Had an alumni dinner here and the food was incredible??? I would never choose to eat at a hotel restaurant but we had the salmon, the mussels, the sliders, and a salad, and everything was perfectly done. Give it a shot especially if you're a hotel guest!

Yelp
We love this restaurant. The food is really great, and it's a chill atmosphere. We love all the games, and it's so fun to play a game while waiting for the food, and after too. There's ample seating and room to move around or not be crowded with other guests. Service is great, always quick and very positive experience.

Yelp
Can't taste any alcohol in the drinks and the bartenders weren't engaging. They ran out of whiskey for the drink and instead of getting another bottle to fill the shot, they added seltzer. The darts and other games were pretty fun, however the experience was overall ruined by 30+ high schoolers being rowdy that nobody did anything about.

Yelp
If you are looking for a higher class dining experience in the Westwood Area, I would suggest adding this to your list. Double Take is located inside the Kimpton Palomar hotel, a perfectly situated hotel on Wilshire Blvd only .5 miles from Westwood Village and less than 2 miles out from Beverly Hills! A group of friends and I dined here on New Year's Eve before heading out to Hollywood and really enjoyed the experience. Upon entering, we were greeted right away and brought our refreshments almost instantly, which is very important to me when I dine out. We ordered the Filet Mignon Carpaccio to start because it was a highly recommended appetizer. The dish was beautiful and I am bummed I didn't snap a picture to share before the boys dug in! Thinly sliced meat was accompanied by fresh arugula and topped with a small amount of cheese and lemon. These 5 small slices of meat and the small amount of arugula was a whooping $18, so I was on the fence about ordering it. To my surprise, the app was delicious and bursting with flavor, but in my opinion not worth the price. For entrees, 2 people got the Mary's Fried Chicken Sandwich, the third got the Original Burger, and I went with the Lemon Pepper Turkey Burger. Before we knew it, all of our meals came out quickly and we dug in! I personally thought that my burger was on the dry side, but it most likely was because I opted out of the Dijon Aioli that they normally put on it as I am picky with my condiments. The rest of the guys really enjoyed their sandwiches/burgers, wiping their plates clean in minutes! I enjoyed the fries that came with all our meals because they were thin and simple, just how I like them! They were a little bland, so I think they could definitely benefit from throwing a little salt or cajun seasoning on those shoestrings. A cool perk about this restaurant is the fact that they have skee-ball, a pool table, darts, and shuffleboard inside the restaurant that anyone can play! Parking can sometimes be tough in this area and driving on Wilshire is fast-paced so if you have no luck finding a spot I recommend using the hotel valet which can be validated when dining at the restaurant for $10.. not super cheap but parking in LA, especially on Wilshire, can be so challenging that $10 might seem worth it. Overall, I enjoyed this dining experience and was glad my friends and I chose to come here for a special NYE meal but wasn't the most flavorful food in my opinion

Yelp
Omg! This place is finally opened! We tried coming here twice during the pandemic. 1st thing we asked for is the Smoked Whisky or Old Fashioned. They are not serving it in the summer. Please bring it back in Fall or serve all year long. Robert, the bartender is awesome! He recommended the Desperado and let us try the house made syrup. It's the best cocktail I had in a while. Now I am all looking for Mexican candies! Def coming back!

Victoria M.

Yelp
I've read all the other reviews...and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the service. Its a sunday night, they are reasonably busy...and Adam was a really fantastic server/bartender. Everyone was super attentive and helpful. I had the tuna poke and it was far better than I expected based on the reviews. I'd definitely order it again. Tuna was very fresh and well seasoned...and it was presented beautifully. Kudos for Adam for going above and beyond at a hotel bar/restaurant where many of us are somewhat captive :)

Rick H.

Yelp
--Food and cocktails: OK --Service: lousy --Valet parking: $33 (including $3 for tax...Not even sure that's legal) --Last but not least, this place is located in a hotel, and they have games (skeeball, etc.), so expect noisy kids running around you while you try to enjoy your adult beverages. And did I mention valet parking is $33? We will never, ever, be back

Yelp
I started with a wedge salad and my wife had the Cesar salad. Both were amazing. Then ordered the penne pasta mine with shrimp and the wife had chicken. I luckily received a different dish first. It was the Cajun shrimp. Omg the best shrimp I have ever had. Then when the pasta came I didn't think It could top the shrimp dish but it did. This was one of the most amazing meals the wife and I have ever eaten. Bar and atmosphere was top notch also I highly recommend. PS: dessert was cheesecake and a brownie with vanilla ice cream and fruit. 11 out of 10. Don't let the prices stop you it is worth every penny and more.

Yelp
My 20-year old daughter and I dined at DoubleTake tonight. The experience was wonderful. Excellent menu, friendly staff, and wonderful food. We shared the brushetta; she had the brussel sprouts and I had the ahi poke. Everything was just delicious and we were very surprised at the amount of food given the reasonable prices. We will likely be back next evening to sample the flatbreads at my daughter's direction. I highly recommend this establishment.

Yelp
Literally a hidden little bar / restaurant in the Palomar hotel nested in between all the beautiful high rises on Wilshire. As neighbors of the hotel we love it here. All very cool free games, pretty good food! Great friendly service each time,Chris K even brought over the concierge to us when we had questions. If you are lucky to be staying here YOU have to end your night here! If you arnt I understand may be tough to find yourself around the area. Nevertheless, cute place with no windows and a diverse crowd for people watching! Cocktails are unique the smoke one is alright. We are groot, big fan! Just like you are in Hawaii. My woman normally orders the missirection travels. We always go for the burger, protein style with butter lettuce! Yum! Blt wedge could use more bacon, and maybe a better knife to cut it up. It's enjoyable to try and figure out where everyone is from. If you wanna Try a hotel bar look no further. If you are traveling here go talk Ray the concierge, he recommended Skylight Gardens to us within walking distance for our last night. Thank you!!! We are now regulars

Yelp
Double take tacks on a 4% surcharge to support a living wage- this isn't disclosed on the menu and only shows up when you get your bill. I'm super supportive of restaurants having living wages but the cost should be added to the cost of items on the menu or disclosed as a service charge in advance of the meal. Lame. Food is decent but a little expensive for what you get. Avocado fries are original and worth trying.

Yelp
This place is great! I just wish it was open passed 11pm. My friend lives across the street so we only went in for a little bit to check it out. It's a combination of sit down restaurant, hip bar with games, and kind of a cafe? (People were working on their laptops). That did make the vibe kind of awkward. But it might just be the perfect date spot. Nice dinner, then drinks and games afterwards! Oh! List of games: Pool, skee ball, darts, and table shuffleboard. And all are free.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
I just stopped in for a drink while staying at the hotel. Perfect for that purpose, but I can't comment on the food. Lounge-y atmosphere late at night with billiards, shuffleboard, darts and TVs. Very comfy chairs and couches. Very sweet and friendly bartender! Left a favorable impression of the restaurant and hotel.

Lauren C.

Yelp
Dinner service was good. Wedge salad and blue cheese dressing was delicious and big portion. BBQ pork sliders were a good portion as well and okay. Did not like that breakfast service was order at counter and bring to table. The food runner just placed the plates of food down abruptly, didn't ask if anything else was needed, was hard to get service -- perhaps no surprise as the service was way under par at this hotel, but we'll keep the bad hotel review separate from the restaurant. Their special breakfast sandwich was terrible - English muffin was cold and I toasted. I asked for extra cheese and there was a sprinkle of cheese - barely any. The iced coffee was not to my liking but maybe works for someone else. The eggs Benedict was eh. Overall not impressed and would not recommend.

Yelp
They are serious about their food here. I ended up eating here three times in 2 days. Two days in a row I feasted on a delicious seafood salad made with Scottish salmon and Gulf Shrimp and crab. The lemon vinaigrette set off the whole dish nicely. For dinner, I had the short ribs with horseradish mashed. It's was superb and comforting. They have a great bartender Brad, who is very knowledgeable about cocktails. The staff is friendly and they make sure everything is just how you like it.

Matthew J.

Yelp
I went to BH two weekends in a row for work. I was totally alone and wanted to have a chat with some friendly folks, so of course I headed to the restaurant bar. I couldn't have been happier with the reception! First I met Brad, who was working hard to manage a rush of customers. Then Jeff an Aussie who also rose to the task. I chatted with both of them and they were really open and fun. They also provided me with excellent service. The food and cocktails were truly outstanding, I did not expect such quality from a hotel restaurant! So, of course I went back night after night. Brad, Jeff and I became fast friends. Brad even took me to a rock concert in Anaheim! Sounds crazy but it was so much fun! I felt so comfortable with Brad that it didn't seem strange to let a guy I just met take me through crazy LA traffic to see a show (Queensryche BTW. A favorite band of mine that I had never seen live!) But they didn't stop there. On another night I stayed at the restaurant until closing and Brad, Jeff and I went to Sunset strip and saw a band at the famous Whiskey a go-go. These guys really went above and beyond, great bartenders and servers, tour guides and good friends. Brad made a childhood dream come true with that Queensryche show to boot! Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. I want to go back to LA just to be at that bar, chat with my new friends and enjoy a great meal. Would be totally worth the trip! Matt

Yelp
No wonder this place is empty. I ordered a Cadillac margarita and it was $27.50! I was considering having a party here. The bar is designed really nice.

Yelp
If you are lucky enough to be sitting at the bar when Sarah is working thank your lucky stars and let her make you a cocktail. Her knowledge and skills show while she mixes your cocktails and converses with you. On the menu and off menu cocktails are absolutely out of this world! On a side note, try the crab avocado stack it is simply delicious.
google avatar

Barbara H.

Yelp
Love this restaurant....the food is yummy, the decor wonderful, the staff superb. The menu is varied and offers something for everyone. The restaurant offers many areas for seating which are really nice and cozy, as well as TV's for watching some sports! We ate here for all three meals and it was just perfect...convenient and good food. You won't be disappointed here.

Yelp
My husband and I were visiting and decided to try Double Take. The menu is not the largest but their drink selection was broad. I ordered the hot wings as an appetizer, the seafood Cobb salad, and my husband got a plain burger. The hot wings were extremely salty in which I sent them back. The seafood Cobb salad had shrimp, lump blue crab, and a grilled piece of salmon with a lemon vinaigrette dressing. The salad had no seasoning or flavor. The portion was big but tasteless. My husband said the burger was okay with no complaints. We also ordered drinks which couldn't be ruined since they were out of the bottle. But I also had a love, sex, and sangria which was not as appealing as the name. The drink tasted much like champagne and less like sangria. Service was steady and attentive as they did not charge me for the wings or sangria. Prices were a bit expensive but probably normal for California. The wings would've been $12 for 6-7 wingettes, $20 seafood Cobb salad, $20 burger, $7.50 beers/cider, $15 sangria. I wouldn't recommend and wouldn't return, but if your a patron at the hotel or play poker it may be a nice spot to try.

Yelp
Amazing ambience, fun Wait Staff. Zach and Isaiah are awesome very helpful. Salmon, Burgers and crispy chicken loved. I had the old fashion. Got to have it.
google avatar

Yelp
Just had the most delicious breakfast. We ordered the avocado toast, mushroom polenta with bacon and poached egg and the French toast with pear marmalade. Not only was the food fresh and full of flavor but all staff was friendly and cheerful. Will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
We had brunch here: stale bagels, stale, dry and oversalted biscuit, and stale granola.... I had much higher expectations from a Kimpton based restaurant. Given that the cost was $60 for our 4 items, this is really not acceptable.
google avatar

Christianne W.

Yelp
Nope, consider bring food from other local eateries or carryout. The food just wasn't up to par.
google avatar

Yolanda A.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the chicken and dumplings with root vegetables. The ice cream sandwich was delicious and definitely too much for 2 people to eat. It's pricey but expected since it's a hotel restaurant. You're paying for convenience. Great place to people watch during awards season.

Bri P.

Yelp
Wow, what a great restaurant with amazing staff. The burger was awesome - so juicy yet still light. I ordered the "Don't Call Me Shirley" drink which allows the bartenders to craft whatever they want. This is an awesome idea because they can create something that compliments your meal. Sarah M knocked it out of the park with pear, grapefruit, honey and lemon flower. Can't wait for more meals here.
google avatar

RA B.

Yelp
Went there for a drink and found nirvana. Ok that's an exaggeration but for a short time that's how it felt. Once she knew what kind of drinks I prefer the bartender recommended Ottos cocktail, one of the drinks she had created for the menu; an unlikely combination of ingredients that was spicy, smokey and fresh. Ahhhhhhhh.....! It was like eating a meal cooked by a 5 star chef. This is is not ordinary bartending! Later I had the the short-rib pot roast. (It sounds so plain) Again, on her recommendation. I don't normally eat beef but at this point I had complete faith in her judgement. Again, tastebuds screaming "YESSSSS!" "More...more"
google avatar

Justin D.

Yelp
Amazing food and even more amazing staff. Chris and Brad were incredibly attentive and even better bartenders . Definitely check it out
google avatar

Yelp
All in all, double take offered me a fine dinning quality experience with all the casual fun of a night out at the bars, the foods great but the drinks are awesome! I stopped in for a drink and asked for a mixed whisky. The bar tender made me a "snake" or "my names snake" ..something like that, which has completely uped the bar on my expectations for what a well crafted cocktail should be. The drink goes 100% recommended too bourbon lovers. I struck up good conversation with a couple business men on travel at the bar so we all decided on having dinner. The salmon was perfect and i hear the steaks great too. Afterwards we played pool and skiball in the lounge before i called it a night. Double Take is an awesome LA experience i'd recommend too all.

Vicky H.

Yelp
Vibe is cool and relaxed. Food is great. Strongly recommend the crab and advocado stack with tortilla chips - very tasty!
google avatar

Brianna K.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprising! Being in a Kimpton property I had high hopes and they were certainly met. The avocado toast was delicious (they have GF bread!) and the crispy sweet potatoes were perfect. Husband loved his burger. Prices weren't bad for a hotel. Afterward we grabbed another drink at the bar and played the free games in the back. Had a great evening!

Midnight B.

Yelp
This place is OK the service is good the food is good but something about it is just off. For one thing they tried to pretend that it's like a game video entertainment area but the entire place is still a restaurant. So it's a mixture of like children running around or people trying to work on their laptops and people chilling out having a glass of wine. It's a little schizophrenic. But the food I've had here has been good solid and tasty. To be honest I kind of just wish this place had a rooftop pool bar or eating area.

Francis M.

Yelp
Took a burger, dissapointing. 1 slice of tomato, 1 slice of lettuce; thats it for vegtables. The bun was also really basic. Also presentation is bad. Had higher excpectation of this place.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
Good place to grab a take away breakfast when staying at the Palomar. I had the granola with yogurt and fruit ($9), which was simple but convenient and filling. The employee who helped me was really friendly and accommodating. She asked the kitchen to quickly make what I'd ordered when she saw that they'd run out so that I could grab something before my Lyft arrived. Unfortunately, it took a little longer than expected and I had to request a different car, but her friendly attitude totally made up for it and I had the opportunity to watch her treat every other customer in line with the same level of personal attention, having a friendly conversation in Spanish with two women and making at least one beverage to suit a unique preference. Star employee and excellent customer service.

Zach K.

Yelp
The decor is nice, service was good (hard to come by in WW), and food/drinks were delivered at a good pace. The drinks seemed to be subtle takes on standards. The 'Call me snake' is pretty much an old fashion, same with others. Nothing remember or special. Wine list and alcohol were a pretty good selection. Food was all good but, again, nothing remarkable or memorable. Over priced for what it is, by a fair bit. Also, be careful about your water selection. They did not make it remotely clear we were getting a $9 bottled flat water. Seemed like your average Flat water or Sparking water question.

Alan R.

Yelp
Are these paid reviews? I feel like I've been duped. A group of four of us stopped in after an event for some apps and deserts. Not trying to be mean but they were all terrible. The fries are the kind you'd get if you visited your kids cafeteria at school and dumped some truffle salt on them. We ordered three of the four desserts and one person said the closest word the could find to describe them was, "savory." It was hard to put a finger on what made them so in enjoyable. But the worst part was almost dying of thirst. It was impossible to get service. The servers were all very very nice, don't get me wrong. But nice won't scrape that oddly flavored dessert off your throat.

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Food is decent, currently rated B but who knows why. Good food selection and I usually wouldn't eat at a rated B restaurant, but the vibe is very cool. I was with a few people so I wasn't going to ruin the experience and leave. We ordered avocado fries, the hummus plate, and red zin wine. The pita chips were very yummy but pretty oily, avocado fries were pretty good (maybe a little too big of pieces) and the sauce was extremely tangy. I think an aioli would have been tastier with the avocado fries. The red zin was light and tasty. They have darts, skeeball, a pool table, and shuffleboard, and plenty of big screen tv's. On Thursday's, they host trivia night in the back room. This is a great place to take your colleagues or office for a happy hour and/or game night.

Yelp
REALLY good!! We have an apartment in the neighborhood and were very disappointed when the restaurant in the hotel closed as we would have breakfast there often. The dinner wasn't great then.....well now we are truly happy. Ate there tonight for dinner and the selections were wonderful, the food very, very good and the service superb! We asked the see the breakfast menu and it truly is much more than that. A real brunch everyday! Looking forward to trying that as well!

Min D.

Yelp
This place has a modern vibe with comfortable seating and atmosphere. Sarah is a pro making the drinks. We got an old fashioned and the drink came literally smoking with the smoothest taste and most fragrant smoke coming from it. Zack our server is charismatic and professional. The food is to die for. We will come back.

Yelp
Had the turkey burger and it was really good. But, it was the cookies and milk that stole the show. If you like chocolate chip cookies you MUST get these. They were not too sweet and had an excellent ratio of chocolate chip to cookie.

Yelp
Pricey cocktails with nice presentation but too much sugar.. food was heavy on the grease. If you're not staying at the hotel, try someplace else.

Yelp
This restaurant is way to expensive for what it is. If you are staying at the hotel, I recommend driving somewhere else for food
