Best Patios in Austin | Eater Austin

"Open from early until late, this vegan-friendly casual patio bar in North Loop is a great spot for extended hangouts. The bar serves cocktails and coffee (and doesn’t charge extra for nondairy milk) along with tacos and other casual fare. The patio has picnic tables, Adirondack surrounding fire pits, colorful murals, and a kid-friendly area for little ones to explore." - Erin Russell

Austin’s Vegan Nom and Barrett’s Coffee Split Double Trouble Restaurant - Eater Austin

"Double Trouble is now under the control of Barrett’s Coffee, with the restaurant expanding its menu to include non-vegan tacos alongside its existing vegan offerings. The split between partners Chris Rios of Vegan Nom and Travis Kizer of Barrett’s Coffee marks a significant shift in the restaurant’s operations." - Nadia Chaudhury

Double Trouble - Review - North Loop - Austin - The Infatuation

"Fans of Barrett’s Coffee and The Vegan Nom can now get the best of both worlds at Double Trouble, an all-day bar, restaurant, and coffee shop in North Loop. By day, come here for coffee and vegan tacos, or show up in the evenings for beers, frozen cocktails, and more vegan tacos. There’s also a pretty massive patio. photo credit: Greg Burton" - Nicolai McCrary

Google
Wonderful Tacos place. Never thought a simple Taco could be this great looking and simply tasty. Great place with grounded attire, great customer service, and simply superb place that you must check it out in Austin. We came here for lunch but I am very curious to come here during the night for a party time. I can just imagine it all.

Google
Amazing place to hangout with family and friends. There is a play area outside for kiddos and lots of misters for the heat in the outside tables as well. Margaritas are really good, and there are TONS of vegan options! I just wished they had high chairs for the babes. And parking was easier.

Google
In Austin there are a ton of places with great character and good drinks, many of which the city is known for but no one mentions Double Trouble. Double Trouble is the epitome of Austin TX. The drinks are great, the food is great, and most importantly the people are fantastic. I especially want to shout out Ash and Chelsea. Get some tacos, get some drinks and enjoy yourself.

Google
Creative menu of tasty dishes and snacks. I enjoyed the barbacoa burrito and the steak burrito. They also have a couple of frozen drinks and Barrets coffee, Austin's best. Several great vintage shops are only a few steps away. There's street parking and more on adjacent streets.

Google
Great selection of food. An entire page of their menu is vegan. They also sell baked goods from Zucchini Kill.

Google
This cozy café, with its charming patio seating and a tattoo parlor nestled in the backyard, offers a unique vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere. The drink menu is a highlight, featuring fun coffee and cocktail options that cater to a variety of tastes. I had the Touch Grass- matcha with cinnamon and honey- and it tasted divine. While I'm not vegan, I had heard great things about their vegan tacos, so I decided to try "The Twins" and "El Rey Tofish." To my surprise, the flavors were reminiscent of familiar fast-food favorites—The Twins had a taste strikingly similar to Taco Bell, while El Rey Tofish reminded me of McDonald’s fish sandwich. Initially, I found it a bit underwhelming, but upon reflection, I see the appeal: these dishes offer a satisfying vegan alternative when you’re craving that fast-food fix you might otherwise miss. It’s not gourmet dining, or authentic taco flavors, but for those moments when you want comfort food with a twist, it hits the spot.

Looking for a new vegan restaurant, this place popped up on my search options. It's in a older part of Austin with a vintage feel to it but the restaurant has a cozy feel to it. Inside there is not a ton of seating but plenty out back. They have a lot of options and variety for vegan foods and they also have a good amount of vegan protein options too! The service is kinda quick and staff is friendly. Food is really good and flavorful. The rice came out nice and fluffy while the veggies came cooked crispy and my friend really likes the veggie burger. Will definitely try to come back and try the other foods. Only downside was the spicy diablo wasn't actually hot. Very flavorful but not hot

Google
I hosted a non-profit group meetup here and it was a big hit with the attendees. To add to our amazing company, the drinks were delicious, the food tasty (vegan options, yesssss), and the atmosphere perfect 👌. Perfect place for our climate focused group… Definitely recommend!

Yelp
I came here for coffee and breakfast. This place is super cute! The staff is helpful, kind and friendly. Drip coffee (Barrett's beans) is quality and inexpensive. Migas taco was made fresh and was 10/10. The backyard space he massive with tons of seating. Perfect for a book club meeting. Parking is semi limited.
google avatar

Yelp
Arty-Quirky kinda of place I love with surprisingly ( or not surprisingly) great food. I love the vegan options for tacos, they have a bar/coffeeshop vibe inside and a family hangout/ gathering area outside. Would recommend.

Yelp
The frozen drinks were GOOD! Service was great. We also had two tacos - the short rip and the pastor. We preferred the pastor. The short rib taco was extremely flavorful. Great ambiance and general vibe. The outdoor seating is phenomenal for patio weather.

Ruchi T.

Yelp
Used to love this place. They had the best vegetarian tacos and now they've changed the whole menu to be impossible meat and tofu :( such a bummer
google avatar

Denise D.

Yelp
Had a nice glass of cold brew! Excellent flavor! Kind of a caramel tone to it. Very quickly ordered & delivered to me! Cool vibe to the place too. A fair amount of free parking in front, and some cool little stores to browse through. I will definitely return!
google avatar

Yelp
Great experience. Really friendly bartender, 4 dollar Lonestar on tap, and an awesome outdoor patio ambiance. Food menu is extensive. Can't wait to try it but we were doing liquid lunch (dinner)! They also have a darlin' lil play area to bring the kids so we'll definitely be back for that.
google avatar

Karla D.

Yelp
This is such a great concept place in North Loop. Huge outdoor patio and space with play areas for kids (of all ages) and a stage. I love that you can get delicious food, coffee, tea, beer, and cocktails all in one spot. Another cool, Austin-style vibe that's super welcoming. Employees seem to really love being there.

Yelp
Went here recently for a quick bite when everything else was closed on Monday and oh my goodness! First off, the food was AMAZING! I got a steak taco as well as a shredded pork taco and the flavors were on point! Some of the most flavorful and juicy tacos I have had in a long time! They have some inside seating but the most spits can be found in their back patio area which was HUGE! They also have a little kids section back there which was perfect for our toddler. It's a bit tucked away do we didn't realize it was there at first but if you peek around the corner you'll find it! Service was pretty quick, you order at bar and then they bring food out to you but make sure you wait for your drink since that comes out at the bar and is not brought to the table. They have a couple parking spaces out front and plenty of street parking in the surrounding area. They were out of a bunch of syrups when I went so want to come back when they are restocked! Can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! The quesadillas were so delicious and such a good portion size for only $10. I got the guac to the guac was pretty mediocre. It definitely lacked flavor. But the quesadillas were so good. I want to come back and eat the quesadillas and try their tacos. The patio in the back was very chill and had a nice vibe to it. I definitely want to come when they have their shows during the week.

Yelp
Was out for a walk from my AirBnB and stumbled across this coffee shop at sunset. What a pleasant surprise. Double Trouble is a moody coffee shop with a restaurant and "study hall" out back, where a rousing game of trivia was underway when I was there. In the coffee shop proper, Smashing Pumpkins was playing and black, gothic candles set the stage. But, you ask, how was the coffee? This is a coffee shop, after all. Solid, I tell you. Both the decaf cortado and decaf macchiato were on point, strong and stout, bitterness cut by the milk. With the coffee shop and restaurant, along with beer and cocktails offered, Triple Trouble might be a more worthy moniker. Looking forward to returning upon my next visit to Austin.

Yelp
Great place! We were surprised to find how much outdoor space they had. Tacos and Coffee were very good. Great place to spend the afternoon!

Jess W.

Yelp
Truly love this place. The food is SO GOOD, and they have great beer and coffee prices. We frequently work from the shaded patio out back. My one old-guy complaint is regarding the sheer number of smokers that seemingly frequent this place. Literally can't get away from the smoke outside some days. Totally ruins the weather and vibe.
google avatar

Joan R.

Yelp
I loved the vegan tacos I got here. The place has a nice vibe and service was friendly and helpful. I also had an excellent mocktail. Sat outside as weather was nice, lots of people out back relaxing. Quite a few flies buzzing around but otherwise awesome experience.

Yelp
Given that spots like Epoch and Barrett's are gaining lots of popularity as cafes, I think this place is kinda underrated on the Austin Cafe scene! It's got outdoor seating, indoor seating, good wifi, food, friendly baristas, community events, great seasonal drinks and alcoholic HH beverages-- what more is there to it?
google avatar

Pree R.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday evening after work with my sister, and we had to spend quite a bit of time trying to find parking. We eventually found a spot on a residential street nearby, and we're able to eat at the restaurant outside on the patio. We both ordered the flautas (vegan) and this dish is the reason I'm giving a 5-star rating. There were four tortilla rolls each filled with potato, with ample sauce and veggies on top. It was the right size for a meal and everyone was raving about them. Someone even asked my sister if she tried them randomly when she went to go get water, haha! While I appreciated the space for outdoor seating, it was obviously very HOT which made it a bit uncomfortable to sit outside and eat. Still, I'm glad I tried a new vegan dish that was worthy of my time and money!

Yelp
Some of the best vegan tacos & crispy tofu in Austin. The menu is huge so there's something for everybody

Yelp
Welcome to the world Double Trouble and cheers to having more rockin' Vegan Nom tacos up north! The promise of free beer proved an irresistible attraction for the opening day celebration, but there are plenty of reasons to make the journey without it. Case in point: the eponymous double trouble taco, a hard shell beauty stuffed with mushrooms, potatoes, picadillo, lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, and crema. In a word, it's simply delightful. Plus, with a solid coffee program, dog friendly patio, and queer-friendly space, this spot is exactly what Austin needs. Go and go often, please.

Yelp
Double Trouble is the newest restaurant in the North Loop area. While there aren't a lot, the older ones in the area are kinda expensive and can be pretentious. Double Trouble is none of that. The food is inexpensive, the coffee really good, and the beer and cocktails are reasonably priced. AND it's open at 7am and closes around midnight! I've be dying for a good place to grab an early breakfast. Too many places in Austin don't open until 8 or 9. Way too late! The Food: There's vegan and omnivore options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast you have simple tacos like bacon, egg and cheese, or more complicated ones like the Tokyo Breakfast. I am obsessed with the Vegan Chilaquiles Mexicana. Holy crap this is amazing... you totally will not miss having eggs! I am pescatarian, so I am making my way around the mostly vegan part of the menu. Besides the Chilaquiles, so far I really like Mi Ranchito and Vegan Migas. My gf likes the Tokyo Breakfast the best. My fave simple taco is potato, egg and cheese. The potatoes here are my least favorite. The potatoes are diced, which I like, but lot of the times the potatoes are undercooked. Not a dealbreaker... For people on the go, they recently added grab-n-go tacos. From the lunch/dinner menu I really like the BBQ Short Rib Taco and Fried Avocado Diablo Taco. The Coffee: These guys are the people behind Barrett's Coffee Roasters. If you love their coffee, you'll love the coffee here. The beans are roasted at the St. John's location and brewed here. I typically go for the house drip coffee which is excellent. My gf gets the decaf almond milk latte which she really likes. You can also get bags of Barrett's coffee beans to brew at home. The Alcohol: The beer menu features all local beers. The beer menu changes constantly, so you might not find the same thing each visit. I still have to try the coffee cocktails. I have friends that love them! Seating: There's a really big backyard with plenty of picnic table seating. Inside, the bar and window counter seating is great. The table seating is kinda weird and uncomfortable. TLDR: This is a great local place with a friendly staff, great food and coffee, good beers and cool music.

Yelp
This place is definitely a hidden gem. I've drove past many times, but recently discovered it on Yelp while searching for coffee shops. They serve Barret's coffee, have a solid bar menu and plenty of breakfast options with a decent amount of parking out front. The back Patio is huge with a kid play area and a stage for live music. Definitely worth adding to your list of places to check out in Austin.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Tasty food. Great coffee and a good beer and drink selection. We went one night to check it out, were wowed and went back the next time we were in the neighborhood and hungry It's a casual place and there's nice seating out back. This could be a "go to" spot. It's good for a quick hit or a relaxed hang. If I lived closer I'd be walking there more often.

Hannah B.

Yelp
I came here for a trivia night with friends. The margarita was yummy and I also had two breakfast tacos that were FULL and delicious. Also loved the vibes of the outdoor area
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Quintessential Austin outdoor brunch with beer, keep it weird place. Great for service and ambiance. Evidently you can bring dogs and kids. Not sure which ones are more of a bother. Beer helps.

Francie V.

Yelp
Cute, very Austin cafe/bar/restaurant. The affordability is a plus, especially when the drinks are good and the food is even better. With both vegan and non-vegan options, it's a great neighborhood place where everyone has options. Plus they host cute events like markets and drag shows!

Michelle M.

Yelp
Went here for brunch last Saturday and it appears that the brunch menu is a new thing, so I thought I'd share an image. I got the French toast and it was fantastic! My friend is vegan and they had vegan options on their regular menu for her. Nothing on their brunch menu is specifically vegan. The mimosas were cheap and delicious. We sat inside because it's too damn hot outside. The tables are very wide which makes it awkward to sit across from each other if you're planning on having a conversation, but we opted to sit at the communal table next to each other instead and that worked just fine. Service was great! The menu and ordering system was a little confusing. It wasn't clear that the regular menu was available during "brunch time" until we asked. Also, just figuring out which door to go through gives you pause when you go for the first time. For these two reasons I'm giving 4/5 stars. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Suzy D.

Yelp
Updating review: we went to this new spot because they were partnering with Vegan Nom and we were excited for another vegan brick and mortar....but they recently ousted Vegan Nom and their kitchen is no longer vegan. Won't be back just to buy a beer from them.
google avatar

Delanie M.

Yelp
5 stars for the vegan birria burrito. the best thing i tried while visiting austin. my only complaint is i wish it was bigger. the consome was so flavorful. I drenched my burrito in it and then used the rest of my boyfriends. i did try the vegan queso and some sort of bowl my second time in austin only because they were out of the burrito but they were not note worthy. that burrito is the way to go.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
Great hang out spot for coffee, a drink after work, or any meal! They have a great patio space with misters, but it's been so hot we opted for inside this time. I tried the "short rib" and grilled avocado reale tacos. Both were so tasty!!! My husband had the flautas and enjoyed them too. They have pastries from vegan bakeries, including zucchini kill. Very lively especially as the evening went on and would love to come back for a drink soon!
google avatar

Jim L.

Yelp
Why have I never discovered this great spot before? Hands-down Austin's best vegan tacos.
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Cute coffee/taco place! Haven't tried their drinks, but had their Vegan Nom tacos (fair warning: the taco selection is not the same. I was hoping for the Korean bbq taco but they didn't have it here, so I ended up getting another taco) There is some seating inside, but not a ton and it's a bit tight. The real star is the huge outdoor seating out in the back, which is great for groups. Overall, a great place to kickback and catch up with friends!
google avatar

Diana V.

Yelp
Great new spot with a great patio with lots of misters!! It was really popular on a Sunday afternoon. Food was a little pricey for what it was imo. I like that they have lil owls everywhere it's fun for I spy. Yay Barrett's!
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
Might be my new favorite veggie-friendly taco spot. Flautas - potato flautas, what? Who would've thought this would work, but the soft potatoes inside the flautas were perfect for dipping with either sauces. Fried avocado Diablo taco - tasty, spicier than I expected so be careful about the kick! Super fresco taco - they no longer had the double trouble tacos, but they mentioned this was the same except wrapped in a queso and flour layer. This was amazing, I miss having crispy beef tacos, and this satisfied my craving fully. Margarita - I also ordered a frozen margarita, but found it a bit too tart and it tasted quite strong (good or bad depending on what you're going for) Great new spot though, I love this neighborhood and it was awesome seeing what new shops were around the area!
google avatar

Lisa O.

Yelp
I've been to Double Trouble three times now and find myself gravitating here every time I get my car washed at Two Brothers Hand Wash. They've got great corn tortilla tacos for breakfast, house tap kombucha, dairy free hot chocolate, gluten-free cookies, and gluten-free cupcakes. If you have children under the age of three, they have an astroturf in the back. My allergies acted up a little inside due to dust. But they had all the front doors open due to plumbing issues accompanied by an unpleasant smell. The smell was so bad that I left.
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
Noted they are mostly vegan is what I was told. Got an iced latte with vanilla and it tasted okay (nothing bad or great). The natural light is great and they have an outdoor patio which is dope when the fall and winter come around. Staff is very friendly, parking is directly outside the shop although there are not a bunch of parking spots, considering there are a lot of different shops in the same area.
google avatar

Raquel P.

Yelp
Loved the vegan taco options! I ordered the Los Primos and Grilled Avocado Reale. Honestly, tastes like normal and the green sauce they have is good too. Service was good and quick; just order at the counter and go pick your table. Small inside area, but definitely lots of picnic tables outside and stage area for music Cool place, definitely will be going back.
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
It's a dive bar with really good coffee and vegan food. I really like this new place - it's unassuming from the outside but the coffee is great and the prices are reasonable for drinks and vegan food. They have a decent amount of seating inside and a big outdoor patio out back. Lots of space to work on a laptop or hang out.
google avatar

Edwyn A.

Yelp
Noticed the coffee shop is already opened (6/2) though it doesn't look like the vegan nom (taco) portion of this complex is open yet. The coffee is from Barret's Coffee. There are two building out front, the one on the left will be vegan nom, and the one on the right is the coffee (drinks) shop. There are two sets of doors to the coffee shop with the left one closest to the coffee and bar area. Order at the counter or the ordering window facing the outdoor area. It looks like they will be serving wine and beer (not sure if they will have cocktails as well) but that specific part of the bar area looked like it was in progress. I ordered at the counter a latte with oat milk. It took a little longer to get the coffee as they are still perfecting the settings of the espresso machine. What I got was an excellent latte. The espresso is not too light or dark. If you get it for here you actually get the drink served in a real dining ware. The price wasn't too bad. For a cafe drink under $6 with oat milk is a good price actually. What's the killer? The outdoor patio area. It looks like there will be a stage as well and there are lots of picnic tables and lounge chairs to sit on. The trees back there provide excellent shade. Can't wait for more things to open up at double trouble.
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute new place, welcoming to everyone. Also host to Vegan Nom Tacos, the best tacos in the universe! Good Hibiscus ice tea and my Italian husband said the best Macchiato in town :-). Very large back patio area for when it cools down. Cocktails too. Nice addition to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
BRANDON (who has stunning blue eyes and a heart of golds) is my favorite bartender & barista here-- he made me the chocolate orange blossom (an iced coffee drink) and I am all of the sudden healed from all my pain. Go tell him hello, he's so nice!
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
why serve vegan cheese if you're not going to bother to melt it? and room temp vegan queso? I took my out of town family here, because of the good reputation, but I found a small baggie of light purple crystal powder in the bathroom outside. my FIL is an ER charge nurse, and said it was bad news. finding drugs at 9am on a sunday in the taco place bathroom is almost as disappointing as cold queso.
google avatar

Krzys P.

Yelp
Great patio. Good food. But blasting death-punk-metal-screaming banshee music so loud you can't hear yourself think on a lovely Sunday afternoon is begging people to leave. Okay to have musical preferences--but to be so overwhelmingly obnoxiously loud and aggressive with zero thought about how it might affect anyone not into death by noise is weird for a community eatery and hang-out.
google avatar

Cayla G.

Yelp
Stopped in to Double Trouble on my weekday cycling route. It made for an excellent cafe-stop offering vegan tacos, pastries, and all the coffee you need. I had a breakfast taco featuring their house breakfast sausage, salsa, black beans, and a corn tortilla. It was made-to-order and took roughly 8 minutes to prepare. It was outstanding. Had I not seen that it was vegan I would not have known. I also grabbed one of their mega cookies to go. It was INSANE. The cookie must've weighed 1.5 pounds and was so good. It was the perfect texture and had the right amount of salt. I would highly recommend grabbing one for the road.
google avatar

Edith G.

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch. The ambiance, the service, and the food were good. I ordered the birria tacos. The plate came with three tacos and consome (dipping sauce). The tacos were good. Full disclosure they were pricey. They were $15. For $15 at my favorite vegan place I get a full meal, with sides, not just tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
2 small iced coffees with a large side of attitude. Our first time visiting this establishment. Basic interior with built-in bench seating and some freestanding tables and chairs. A community billboard with flyers promoting local shows at various venues around town. Beer selection on blackboard. Order at the counter and experience the superior attitude of your barista/bartender. Even more attitude when you come looking for your order. Was it something we said? The 20% tip not enough? Geez Louise, folks. Lighten the blank up. Regardless, we rather enjoyed ourselves here, or rather, I did. My husband refuses to give them a second chance. They will survive just fine without us old folks ruining the scenery and youthful vibe. Good selection of music, and an inviting looking, dog-friendly outdoor area with picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and misters. Parking here is a challenge. Highly walkable and bike-able neighborhood though. 2 stars just for being there. 3 stars for strong coffee. Zero stars for service.

Yelp
Tasty vegan tacos, good vibes from the employees. I love this spot! After fueling up with tacos & coffee at Double Trouble it's fun to check out the vintage shops. Cute area to spend an afternoon.

Yelp
Really cute bar. Lots of patio space in the backyard with plenty of lights and a stage for live music. They sell food, cocktails, beer and coffee. I've came here to get work done before and it was nice. However, the evening bartender was not helpful at all. We came in and sat at the bar, because that's how other bars generally work. We sat there for about 10 minutes without any acknowledgement and no other customers. Finally he asked how we were doing and we asked for drinks and he said sure. We later learned they service customers through a register at the end of the bar, no thanks to him. After ordering and PAYING for our drinks we only got one. He forgot about the other and we didn't get it for 15 more minutes. Keep in mind this place is pretty dead. Besides our terrible experience with him the bar is spacious and has potential. Looking forward to coming back when there's a different bartender.

Yelp
I absolutely love double trouble, I go here regularly and bring all my out of town visitors here. They are affordable, and in my opinion their food is outstanding in quality and taste. They also have a number of great events here (bingo, trivia, concerts, movie nights) all free and the vibes are great.
google avatar

K U.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Super cute indoor and outdoor space with lots of chairs and not too busy. Service was really fast and the tacos were delicious! We really loved the outdoor shaded area and would love to come back in the evening for a beer or a boozy slushy on the patio.

Daniela H.

Yelp
This place is so cute. The tacos are delicious, and they have very extensive menu, which is always nice. Employees are friendly and efficient!

Yelp
The establishment vibe is chill and great place to catch up with friends. I tried the hibiscus mint tea and the fried tofu sandwich with fries. It's very tasty, with a little spicy kick. Staff was nice and overall great experience.
