The 11 Best Restaurants Around Virginia-Highland

"Doughnut Dollies takes its name from American Red Cross’ Donut Dollies who delivered coffee and donuts to soldiers during WWII. Luckily the only battle you'll have to endure to get these sweets is finding a parking spot on Virginia Ave. When you head into the tiny interior—covered with black and white subway tiles and a mural of a Rosie the Riveter-esque woman flexing with a donut—whether you get the yeast donuts made with 24-hour brioche dough or a cake donut, prepare yourself because they are massive. The hot cocoa donut is one of our faves, with gooey homemade marshmallows on top and a chocolate filling. Sometimes bigger really is better." - demarco williams, juli horsford, nina reeder

Doughnut Dollies Is Opening in Virginia-Highland, Atlanta - Eater Atlanta

"A third location of Doughnut Dollies opens this spring at the corner of Virginia and North Highland avenues. The Marietta-based doughnut shop, owned by chef Anna Gatti and Chris Gatti, replaces Dtox Juice in Virginia-Highland. Doughnut Dollies first opened in 2015 along Cherokee Street in Marietta, followed by an in-town location on Howell Mill Road on the edge of Atlanta’s Channing Valley neighborhood two years ago. The name references a group of Red Cross volunteers who delivered coffee and doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War II. This location will have a unique interior design and offer a full line of seasonally changing doughnuts and a full coffee and espresso program. Like the Howell Mill location, the Virginia-Highland shop will include a few seats at a bar, with seating on the sidewalk. The shop could open in May. Doughnut Dollies offers over two dozen classic and seasonal yeast and cake doughnut flavors baked fresh daily, such as the Cereal Bowl topped with cereal milk frosting or the Sweet Jane, a 24-hour brioche stuffed with vanilla pastry cream. Gluten free and alphabet letter doughnuts are also available. Both shops serve Athens-based Jittery Joe’s coffee." - Beth McKibben

Google
This review is high because of the actual product. I tried the Mikey. Maple long John with a coffee cream filling and savory bacon 🥓 on top! My goodness, I only ate half - it wasn't too sweet but very rich & doughtie. Although she was able to describe the flavors of every donut left the service cashier's personality told me she didn't want to be there. Her tone made me question why she interacts with people if it's such a hassle for her. But nevertheless, the doughnut was tasty af!

Google
I really enjoyed these donuts. They're very filling, I didn't find many of them to be too sweet. The lemon lavender was my favorite. The strawberry malt, peaches and cream, and the custard filled one were also notable. I'm glad to have them in the neighborhood!

Kevin D.

Google
Had the Dollie (creme brûlée) matcha vanilla, and strawberry. By far the Dollie was the best. Came in Saturday morning for a quick take out. Thankfully was able to find street parking and the employee was incredibly helpful in explaining to me the different tiers and even recommended me the Dollie donut. I'm still thinking about it days later! Great service.

Google
Love Donut Dollies! The maple syrup bacon donut might be my new favorite. The cream is super fluffy and light! Mikey (Maple syrup bacon) - 12/10, buy it right now, you won’t regret it. Peach cobbler - 10/10, presently surprised by the cinnamon sugar on the outside Sweet Jane (powdered w cream)- 10/10, very sweet but love their cream Crème brûlée - 7/10, flavor was spot on, donut itself was a bit dry Old fashion (chocolate) - 6.5/10, tasted a little burned on the outside but the chocolate flavor was good Apple fritter - 5/10, little dry today. Had it before as the kings cake and it was better

Google
You can get better donuts from local grocery stores and markets that don't even specialize in donuts. We got a Vanilla Bean glazed and a Almond Rose. Hate to say it but the glazed donut was disgusting...couldn't even finish it let alone swallow the one bite I took. It was far too dry and had a strange chemical aftertaste. Look at the picture! This thing is a bagel not a donut. The almond rose was fine but nothing special. Also the cashier was rude to my wife for no reason.

Google
We tried the PB&J, Clementine, and Birthday Cake... all 1st in class. The staff was also so welcoming and helped us narrow down our decision. Will definitely be back!

Google
Good donuts. I wasn’t a huge fan of the crème brûlée boozie donut but my wife loved it. They’re big, so one donut with a coffee is a great breakfast imo.

Google
Nom nom nom!! Sorry, my mouth was full. I can’t stop eating them!! WOW! WOW! WOW! Did I die? Am I in heaven? These are fork and knife doughnuts. So delicious!

Yelp
We finally made it to Doughnut Dollie's in VaHi. We walked over, but parking looked scare and I'm unsure if they have dedicated guest parking. Service was average and different levels of doughnuts had different pricing from $3-4.50 each. Coming in at 1pm on a Sunday, there were already doughnuts that were completely out and they were running low. We opted and got 5 doughnuts: - Matcha Blueberry - Sweet Jane - Clementine - Dollie - Vegan Birthday Cake The Matcha Blueberry was my favorite! It was loaded with blueberry filling and spurts of matcha cream. Sweet Jane is so classic and not too sweet and light! The filling in the Dollie was yum and sugar torched top was a nice texture bonus. The vegan Birthday Cake doughnut was the biggest miss for us. The doughnut itself was great, but the icing just tasted so so off. Yeah, it was vegan, but it kinda just tasted chemical-y. The birthday cake bits were yum though! Doughnut Dollie's is a solid place and we'll definitely be back earlier in the day another time to see their full selection.

Yelp
Doughnut Dollies is probably one of my favorite donuts in Atlanta! I usually go to the West Midtown Howell Mill location but for Valentine's day, I decided to pick up donuts from the VaHi location. Parking is pretty easy to find in VaHi either on the street or the lot in the back for VaHi shops. The store is pretty small with not really any space to sit and eat but it was fine for just picking up donuts! When we got there, we picked out our box of donuts and the staff at the counter was super nice telling us what flavors they have. The donuts themselves are SO GOOD every single time!! We got the Mikey (maple bacon), Sweet Jane (vanilla filled), Sweet Joe (chocolate filled), dulce de leche, and Mexican hot chocolate. All of the were delicious but the Mikey is always my personal fave. Overall love donut dollies and will be making return trips!

Yelp
I absolutely adorable doughnut dollies!! I have been to one of their other locations so I was pumped to try this one! We came on Valentine's Day for their special heart shape doughnuts so we came on a Tuesday around 9am! The girl at the counter was great and helped us! The vibes of this location are also adorable and it's in a great place of VaHi. We got 10 doughnuts and tried a bunch! The dulce de leche, Mikey, sweet Jane, sweet Joe, dollie, chocolate frosted and Mexican hot chocolate which was their special! It was delicious with a hint of spice and the dulce de leche was to die for! The others are great classics and my favorite is definitely the dollie which is creme brûlée!! Cannot go wrong with these doughnuts as they are probably some of the best in Atlanta!

Yelp
My family and I were so excited to finally try this place! We have been stalking their instagram for months and decided we would preorder the Valentine's Day donuts just because the hearts were so cute! I preordered the dozen 2 days in advanced, like the website suggested to ensure we would get to try all of the flavors we've been waiting for. These donuts were on the higher side regarding prices that I would usually pay for a dozen donuts, I paid $52 but at the end of the day it was fine because we were so excited to try these! Unfortunately when I got the the location at out scheduled pick up time, the poor lady working didn't even know we pre ordered. She apologized and let us know that she had no notification of our preorder so of course our donuts were not ready. I felt so bad, because she clearly did not was to disappoint customers but it was not her fault she had no clue of the order. She immediately gave us the flavors from our order that were left and substituted out the flavors that were sold out for the day. I'm very thankful her service was so helpful despite the issue! But at the end of the day I strongly feel if a customer is paying upwards of $50 for a dozen donuts, and ordering days in advance per the company's suggestion, that order should be made and ready for pick up on time. For the price we paid, and following all of the suggested directions, I strongly feel the customer is owed a correct and timely order. The donuts were regular donuts, we did enjoy finally trying them. But this will definitely be a first & last for this establishment. I hope other customers have a better experience!

Yelp
I attend church down the street from the Virginia Highlands location of Doughnut Dollies and decided to treat myself today. This location is small and the only seating is outside. It seems to be primarily for carry out. I love creative doughnuts and found the selection to be decent for 1pm on a Sunday. There were eight choices remaining and on display in the case when I arrived. Service was friendly from the lone employee and she helped guide me on my choices and clarified some of the ingredients. Ultimately I chose two of the vegan Pina Colada cake doughnuts, two of the Almond Rose and two of the Matcha Blueberry. When I arrived home I decided to try the Almond Rose. It was light in texture and the amount of icing and almond and rose flavor was perfect. It paired nicely with a cup of coffee. After dinner I decided to try the vegan Pina Colada doughnut for my dessert. Because vegan pastries can sometimes be a little dry, I warmed up this doughnut in the microwave for 25 seconds and it was awesome. I didn't try it prior to placing in the microwave however it already seemed quite moist once I bit into it. The dominant flavor was primarily coconut, which I loved. I am going to try the Matcha Blueberry with my morning coffee tomorrow. My parents have been raving about this place for quite awhile and this was my first time patronizing them and tasting the doughnuts. I am now a fan. I am going to categorize these doughnuts as an "indulgent pleasure" for times when I feel like treating myself to something special. I realize that rent is expensive for this area and that Covid has increased food costs which leads to my one critique, six doughnuts with tax and 15% tip were $29.43. They were worth every penny. I can't wait to try the other varieties and treat myself again!!

Yelp
Second time visiting this place. The fist time I came they only had one type of donut left. So, I got it and loved the cream. Today I got their signature donut and it was lovely. The creamy center was perfect! The staff is usually friendly, but you should know that they are only open until a certain time or when they run out. They don't make donuts all day, so it's probably best to go as early as possible. It's a cute little shop. Definitely would visit again.

Yelp
Great fluffy fun flavors of donuts. Big too! Been wanting to visit for awhile and it was worth it. I'll be back for sure

Yelp
Right in the heart of Virginia highlands! This donut shop is cute and quaint with a lot of offerings. I did not realize that some doughnuts were priced higher than others, I got the crème brûlée, chocolate glazed, and cereal with vanilla. We did a dozen which got to be pretty pricey but we did get a discount! I was really bummed that you had to order the gluten free in advance, I had no idea! They had 1 option for vegan too but I felt like the options weren't as big of a variety than other donut shops nearby. The woman who helped me was very rude as well. Didn't say much and was no help.

Yelp
The doughnuts were fun flavors and unique. Definitely a more old fashioned type of doughnut (at least the ones I got). Were a little bit oily, but were still tasty. I liked t

Yelp
Okay I got a dozen doughnuts for $50 and I don't regret it. They were amazing. The only complaint I have is that the cereal doughnut was stale. Every other doughnut was so good and had the perfect flavor balance. They have a doughnut for every type of customer. This is must have doughnut place, just be mindful of their pricing system.

Yelp
This is a solid doughnut spot, although I wish they had vegan donuts available every day (I think it's occasional/to order). However, the regular donuts are great! They are huge and such a delicacy. They do cost more than I'd like to pay for donuts, but it's a good option for a post-barre treat!

Lily F.

Yelp
Solid doughnuts, monthly flavors, big fan! They also have coffee and overall, it's a great one-stop Saturday morning shop!

Yelp
Delicious, airy, and yeasty donuts! I highly recommend the namesake dollie donut! The matcha blueberry was incredible

Yelp
Hours are listed incorrectly online. Just ran on my only break to grab a coffee and was told they don't have coffee 10 minutes to close. Asked about the hours online, and was explained the entire cleaning process. After I brought the hours up again, it was mentioned that she would mention it to the manager. Please correct your hours so people do not waste their time.

Yelp
On our trip to Atlanta we hit this spot two days in a row it was so good. Highly recommend the sunflower honey donut. The perfect combination of sweet and salty. Coffees are also made with careful concentration from the barista. Definitely a go to if you are in Virginia Highlands.

Yelp
Doughnut Dollies is one of the newer businesses posted on Virginia and Highland, and we were pleased on a recent visit on a Sunday morning. I'm not the biggest doughnut fan, but we stopped in to check it out, and their offerings were undeniably good, even for someone like me. We ordered a couple of their vegan pumpkin options and a cinnamon sugar, and marveled at some their other options, including a beautiful fig creation. We also ordered coffee, which was just okay, but I guess that's not the point. I really wanted their espresso al limone, which is apparently a shot of espresso infused with lemon juice, but they were out of lemon on my visit, justifying a return visit. We sat on their outside sidewalk table, and enjoyed our breakfast, making for a pleasant morning.

Kyra D.

Yelp
My friend and I love this donut shop! They make their donuts from scratch and they melt in your mouth! The service is impeccable! A must go to in midtown!

Yelp
Wow, what an amazing donut! The s'mores donut is wonderful. The marshmallow in it tastes very fresh and homemade. Also, their staff is wonderful. Jaslyn helped me out and was very helpful in describing the donuts and helping me make my choice. I can't wait to go back. The banana pudding donut will be next!
google avatar

Nishank J.

Yelp
Delicious donuts with vegan options. I tried Smores doughnuts and regular doughnuts. Both were yummy. Now in food coma

S S.

Yelp
This place is great at *certain* varieties, particular filled varieties and cake donuts. All their yeast donuts are not hits, although their large sizes may appear to be tantalizing at first. My first experience wow'd be with the yeast raised earl grey donut (that was a limited time only), and on my 2nd trip I enjoyed the fresh fruit/fresh cream filled donut and chocolate old fashion (cake donut). I didn't love the vanilla glazed yeast donut, as the inner was a bit dry so I didn't get that nice soft chew that I expect from a yeast donut. I've yet to try all the others, so hoping other varieties are as tasty as the fresh berry cream and chocolate original!

Marko P.

Yelp
Excellent service from Damla!! They also give service members and military a veteran discount. Thank you for honoring our Veterans and Service members. Great location, clean and very accessible. Delicious donuts!!

Yelp
Great service. Sits on a corner in VaHi, so it's fun to sit a while and watch the morning go by. Got the namesake donut Dollies, not too bad a 3.5 stars.

Yelp
My favorite donuts in Atlanta! These are so delicious. The fig doughnut is fabulous! Don't be fooled by the long lines, they move pretty quickly as everyone is taking their donuts to go. This place is a MUST if you're a doughnut fan!
