"Douglas, a well supplied new neighborhood market and cafe, is open at 1598 Sanchez (at 29th Street). It’s pouring Heart Coffee, serving food and pastry, and generally helping the neighborhood stock up on the good stuff from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). A literal “corner store” in a city where that term is used to describe any old neighborhood market (in lieu of the New Yorkism “bodega” or the preferred Massachusetts term “package store”), Douglas is an elegant version of the SF classic. The light-filled space was formerly Bom Dia market, and when he saw the vacancy, Michael Molesky knew it was just what he had in mind. He calls it Douglas after the fir tree, a classic SF building material that also happens to sound like an approachable guy. Molesky was born in SF, and before Douglas, worked at an ad tech company that sold to Facebook (he still runs a company called Marker). Molesky and partner Maggie Spicer, a contributor to EdibleSF, appointed the space with tables, bar seating, lots of produce, snacks, and staples. They’ve also got a very healthy selection of Old World and California wines (also available for consumption on premises). In choosing products to stock, Molesky wants to take care of essentials “without having six types of eggs and four types of butter” but with an eye toward personal relationships with purveyors. “The hope is every product we feature, we know the face behind it,” he says. Another familiar face to local customers at Douglas will be Jim Molesky, Michael’s dad. Expect to see him working at the counter: “He has a great palate, and a natural sense of hospitality,” his son says. “Having him here on site, it’s a lovely way to have a personal face to the market.”" - Caleb Pershan

"1598 Sanchez Street (at 29th Street), the short-lived Bom Dia market and St. Paul’s Market before that, will reopen as Douglas, arriving soon for coffee and pastries as well as wine and cooking supplies. It comes from Michael Molesky, a tech exec and startup founder associated with an ad company that sold to Facebook for a reported $500 million. Also onboard at Douglas are his dad, Jim, and Maggie Spicer, a contributor to Edible SF." - Caleb Pershan

Hip, cozy, and fun neighborhood coffee shop. Good coffee, great pastries, some groceries. Owner & staff are super nice and always up for a surprise. Today, they had newspapers to sit and read. Heaven.

Fantastic corner market, wine bar and cafe in a beautiful setting. I have enjoyed all of the produce, cheese, wine, pastries and gummies that I have had had at Douglas and will be back for more soon!

Great espresso, even decaf, and they switch up the brands they use. Nice place to greet the neighbors and hang out. And beautiful ceramic cups add to the experience

A lovely bright place. It looks a bit more like a small market than like a cafe to me, but definitely feels cozy enough to spend some time inside with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. They carry lots of local organic produce, and their wine selection is quite nice. The cafe menu is rather small, limited mostly to toasts and pastries. I've had a problem with their three cheeses plate once, but other the owner was so sweet with the response and attention it turned into a pleasant experience after all.

I ordered the fruit smoothie. It was fairly standard but the price was quite high and I would have been satisfied with only half the portion.

This is by far the best cafe in the neighborhood with a super nice staff. The owner and wine buyers are particularly knowledgable about their selection. They specialize in natural wines which I didn't know I loved until I learned about the producers and sampled the wines they select. It's a gorgeous environment to have a drink with friends, a coffee, or a quick bite of delicious food. It's a gem!

Very friendly staff, bright and pleasant space, very welcoming. Feels like it’ll be a nice neighbourhood spot, hopefully for many years to come. Pastries are tasty, coffee is good and the ceramics they’re served in/on are lovely.

Warm and welcoming neighborhood gathering space. While visiting SF I stumbled upon this gem run by two true food and wine lovers. Their selections of wines, cheeses, breads and fresh organic fruits and vegetables is carefully curated and good value. Incredible coffee, tea and chocolate selections too! I will definitely be back next time I am in SF!
