First time trying. Mac and cheese not fresh. Fried chicken and okra salty as hell!! Like salty salty!! Taste like it was cooked with seasoning salt and extra seasoning salt was garnished on top after cooking. Chicken has no flavor throughout just on top! I can't even eat it considering I'm hungry that's how salty it is. On top of that chicken had lots of hair! So was it even cleaned? Two meals almost 50 bucks. Never again. And this is speaking from southern background. Only thing tolerable was cornbread most likely store bought. I'm not one to leave any let alone negative reviews but this was disappointing. Whoever giving 5 stars yall lying!!

Down Home Delivery: Seriously, You NEED to Try This Place! Down Home Delivery is our family's absolute favorite in Boston! The food is incredible – especially the wings, pork chops, and ribs. Everything tastes homemade and fresh, with amazing sides like mac & cheese and collard greens. The cornbread? Don't miss it! The owners are so kind; they even delivered our meal personally once. It's truly Southern comfort food, made with love. Highly recommend!

My cousin, and myself ordered chicken wings, yams,and greens.Wings cooked well with no seasoning,greens no seasoning big stems and yams taste like they dropped the cinnamon bottle in it. My order fish which tasted old greens horrible yams yuck,only thing good was fried okra.A soul food place without the soul. Bottom line do not waste your time or money.

We hired Down Home Delivery to cater a groundbreaking ceremony and block party for one of our nonprofit clients in Dorchester. Gale and her team were an absolute joy to work with from start to finish. She brought all the materials needed, including utensils and napkins and plates. The food was exceptional -- especially the mac & cheese balls! She came at the end and swiftly cleaned up everything. I can't recommend Gale enough!

OMG, still sticking to my sides. This is some big back, put you to bed, and make you want more the next day food. Two spatulas up to the chef, or southern mom. Been living in Boston 45 years and the best meal 😋 👌🏿 😍. My belly thanks you.

I order the pork chop, they was nothing but bone. They was fried hard, dry and unseasoned. The pork chop is broken up because , I was trying to find a piece to eat. So dry it broke to pieces. The second piece was straight bone(3rd picture). If I didn’t know any better, I would think they was from yesterday. I’m stick to Slades!!!!!

Ribs were tough, sweet potatoes to much cinnamon, mac and cheese was liked boxed instead of homemade. Okra was terrible!!!! They are pineapple coconut cake when I first got it it was the bomb the flavour is still there but the cake is dry as hell

I've place different food orders each one has had a problem either the baked chicken is tough and dried out, the fish too much seasoning and even after you ask for them to be light with seasoning. It's like no one listens or can read, I come from Norwood and the 2 women that take the orders are never polite or friendly and just don't listen. I keep trying wish there was another place I could go to for this soul food

I got some food from this place by ordering through Grubhub. There is a lot to pick from on the menu but I went with the fried chicken meal and I picked potatoes and hush puppies for my side orders. My order arrived here quickly and the food was hot when it arrived here so that is definitely good service. The food was delicious. The fried chicken was nice and crispy and the side orders were tasty and satisfying. The variety on their menu allows for something for just about everybody. I would definitely order from this place again.

The chicken is superb. Perfect balance of crunchy and juicy. Sweet Chili flavor or good but the sauce does make the chicken a little soggy. Lemon Pepper is the best, no complaints. The mashed potatoes were missing the gravy and were mediocre at best. Mac & cheese doesn't look good but is decent, pairs well with the yams and collard greens (which are both full of flavor) but isn't anything to write home about. Cornbread may very well be boxed but I don't mind, nice addition to the meal. Overall, good is great and is a great value!

I've eaten at this restaurant before and it was good, but now that I live in Rhode Island I don't get here as often. Last night my husband brought home takeout from Down Home... Fried chicken, wings, beef, macaroni & cheese, greens, cornbread, and lemon poundcake. I expected it all to taste good, but I was blown away by the way the cornbread and pound cake melted in my mouth. Don't get me wrong. Everything else was really good, but I'm literally still thinking about that cornbread almost 24 hours later. All I have to say is, whoever is in there baking has anointed hands. I don't even have a picture to back up my review because I inhaled that cornbread.

I like the food here a lot the fish for takeout could be hit or miss though. Wings are seasoned and fried well! (4/5) Mac and cheese and yams are solid! (4/5) I love catfish but they only sell it on weekends. Sometimes its under cooked and sometimes not seasoned enough but when they get it right... then it's on point! (3/5) Can't speak for ambiance as I don't think you can sit inside.. or at least i never have. Service for the most part isn't too bad either.

The best aspect is that you can customize your order to your preference, and the food is delicious. I usually request mine with little or no salt.

This was my first time visiting this restaurant and they left a lasting impression. Ribs, Collard greens, Corn bread,macaroni and cheese were all great. I ordered hush puppies but those are only available on the weekends. The restaurant reached out to me and I was able to replace it with black eyed peas and rice. All of the food was delicious. I will be eating there again

Need to hire a new cook the one you has can't soul food I order chicken livers they were not done and I ordered some potato salad no season but mustard season taste bad and I ordered a pork chop sandwich the pork chop was big lots of fat and cooked real hard no season and it was brunt and had to much garlic I spent lots of money for this sorry meal

The food is bad. All of it. BBQ chicken was bland, greens not seasoned. The potato salad didn't look like potato salad and had a strange taste . Candied yams taste like canned yams. Ugh this was really bad. I really didn't want to write this, but I'm just being honest. But to be real honest- Up North ain't got Down Home food, period. Sad to say. If y'all know of good southern food round here- please let me know . (I called beforehand to ask about desserts and the person who answered the phone was very nice, fyi. )

Great seasoned food and taste. Everything tasted fresh out the oven and grill. The service was friendly and pleasant. I highly recommend for good home style comfort meal!!

The smothered pork chops were gummy. Too much flour was left on and then put in bottled gravy. The string beans are from a can and the rice was hard. This was a big disappointment. I've had their fried wings, black eye peas and cabbage before and it wasn't bad. This meal was a complete miss. If you're selling yourself as authentic soul food. Use fresh ingredients. And make your own gravy.

Wonderful service and delicious food! We had food for 30 people delivered for a baby shower and everything went very well! The fried chicken and ribs were delicious and we also had macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and cornbread. Was just great. The catering director, Gale, Was very helpful and clear. She she even offered suggestions about certain things we didn't think of. Thanks Down Home!

The Mac n cheese is not real, not sure what type of "cheese" they use but it's curdled n looks weird, like this is not real cheese. The collard greens are tasteless at best, they are big n have almost no flavor. The baked chicken was dried out n overcooked. I ate some of it, usually I would save the rest for later but I will throw these left overs in the trash...such a waste. Also, on the app it says your meal comes with a corn muffin, but you don't get one unless you order it separately, And I never got the chili sauce I requested...it's ok, they will never have to worry about me ordering ever again. Eat here at your own risk....their food is cooked with no love, they just throwing stuff together calling it "soul food"... it's awful.

Attention to detail is important. My order was for catfish dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy, with corn. No gravy was included! C'mon man

They got my order wrong I wanted potato salad and they gave me cold Mac and cheese. The yams was good and also the ribs but I didn't want cold Mac and cheese I wanted potato salad

Good Home Cooked Food and Generous Portions! Taste Close To Mama's!!! Always Hot &Fresh!!! Make sure you have some Banana Pudding and a Slice of Cake along with some of that Sweet Tea. And don't forget to ask for some extra cornbread!!

I really wanted to support not only local business but Black business as well with Down Home. I've been here a few times and every time just like most of the other reviews the customer service is terrible. It's like I'm bothering them by coming to order or they would rather be doing something else, anything else but taking an order from me, and for love if God don't you dare ask a question it just gets worse. The food is actually good. The wings are a good size and flavorful, Mac and cheese is ok could use a kick up on the flavor but it's ok. There aren't many options for soul food in Boston and I try to support my people as much as I can but someone from their company needs to get on Yelp and actually read the reviews so things can change.

I've been coming here for years and it keeps getting worse and worse. From the customer service or lack there of to the food and portions. I never understand why companies have people who don't wanna be there answering phones and taking orders. They're the forefront of your business & our first impressions The fried chicken and pork chops are my go to meats, and for the most part they are pretty consistent & good. The Mac & cheese I will never order again. It's like scrambled eggs type Mac n cheese every time I've gotten it recently. Always feels like they are giving you the last of the pan. Rice & gravy is nothing special. Greens are good depending on the day tbh Okra is good when it is fresh but that's very rare as well Cornbread is good. Green beans taste canned so better off with a different green vegetable I want to support black owned businesses, but it's hard when the customer service is lacking and the food as well. Maybe in the future it'll get better.

The Pit Stop BBQ closed down & I was craving for some BBQ pork ribs. I heard about Down Home Cooking & I tried their ribs. The lady who took my order was very nice & helpful. The ambiance was comforting & peaceful. When I reached home, I could not wait to dive in. The ribs were moist and seasoned. The sauce blended with the ribs. All & all, the ribs were delicious. I might go again this week. Down Home Cooking is my new place for BBQ pork ribs.

After ordering through Uber Eats, I waited about 20 minutes to pick up the order. I arrived at the takeout window as soon as I received the text which stated my order was ready. I then waited 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge my presence (there were 5 women inside). I collected my order and immediately when I sat in my car, I checked the bag to ensure it was correct. To my surprise, the smell of the fish was nauseating and the portion of the potato salad was disappointing. I decided to try the food instead of throwing it away (minus the fish, I didn't want to get sick). The Mac and cheese was bland and lacked substance, the potato salad was also bland and did not include relish or salt. It was apparent, the fish and sides were not fresh. Sorry, but you are not invited to the cookout! How do they even offer catering?

I ordered a fried pork chops dinner paid 20 dollars and am not happy. My sides were black eye peas and mac&cheese. The juice from the black eye peas made both of my pork chops soggy and the macaroni mushy. The black eye peas should have Been in a separate lil small container. The macaroni and cheese look like scrambled eggs.

I wanted BBQ SO BAD ! So I went to the inter web / yelp and sooooo glad we tried a new place. This is as legit as it gets we walk in and Martin is on tv and plenty of room to sit with wide solid chairs. We ordered the special pork rib for two and we could not finish it. The ribs had to be 15 and smothered in a sweet BBQ sauce. Pork was just right and so not overcooked and flavorful. The Mac and cheese was thick and the black eyed peas were super crisp. I love that . And the collard greens so tangy surprising there was no ham or meat on the collard greens. So tasty. We got two banana puddings and literally could barely get thru 1/3 of one of them. I loved the smiles when I walked in and this place had a great neighborhood vibe. It is not hipster it is the real deal though !

One word-soul food! Ok...two words ! I was craving soul food and discovered this place on yelp. I've been there twice in one week ‍! I ordered the fried lemon pepper chicken with yams, collard greens, along with an additional side of Mac and cheese. Delicious!! The second time around I ordered baked chicken wings with mashed potatoes (homemade) and gravy and collard greens. This place sooths the soul! Authentic!! I'm going to try the fried catfish this weekend. It's only sold on the weekends

It's one thing when you have a shtty attitude. Almost like ya cousin owns the joint and you needed a job...but you hate your job. That's the vibes. The mac and cheese is garbo! over cooked noodles and under cooked roux don't mix. The greens? Downright shame, ease back off the vinegar....acidity is at overload! And put some flavor in em? Y'all need a lickher. As every batch of greens does. Down home? Every aspect of your operation blows...cept for the chicken. The dark meat fried right. Y'all winning there..

Expensive trash..I really have wanted to like this place. Have tried this restaurant a few times and its always some BS. Would give no stars if I could. I ordered the fried catfish dinner (comes with two sides and a corn muffin). As sides, I chose black eyes peas over rice and cabbage..they gave me no rice, just peas. And no corn muffin..once every blue moon, you order form this place, and the food is good. But the vast majority of the time, it's crap.

Food is great. Service absolutely stinks. Phone service awful. Shame. Best food ever.

The food was decent, but nothing blew my mind. I ordered fried chicken, hush puppies, a snack sized version of the ribs, corn bread, yams, mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. Usually I'm not a fan of mashed potatoes but I think this was the best tasting thing out of my order. They were the perfect, buttery consistency and the gravy was the perfect addition. I'm a fan of garlic and I definitely enjoyed the garlicky goodness of each bite. The mac and cheese was decent, although I think it could've been more cheesy or salty. The hush puppies were not tasty at all, I had a bite and it was dry and not worth the carbs. The fried chicken was decent, the breading was flaky and had good flavor. The ribs had a nice smoky flavor and the sauce was very sweet and tangy. The yams were also good! The syrup that drenched the yams were full of flavor and reminded me of a fall dessert. I'd say this is a reliable source of soul food however, I'd want to try other options in Boston before coming back here.

Everything was delicious!! Down Home catered an event for us today - I've never seen so many people go back for seconds (and thirds...). To top it off, the service was impeccable and the owner could not have been nicer. We will definitely be back for more!

Ribs, Mac and mash are my favs here! Not too pricey neither! Their wings are very good too particularly the bbq flavor!

Food was phenomenal. However, Customer service was a 5 out of 10 because The person who took my order, didn't have good listening skills. Would definitely go back, but respectfully would be a little bit more assertive with my order. Inside restaurant was cold and gave me the feeling they are hanging on by a thread.

I had the pleasure to finally check this place out since I was nearby. The place is easy to find, plenty of parking on any side streets. The woman who took my order was nice and very busy. She got my order correct and I received my takeout fast. I ordered the meatloaf dinner and I was amazed by the portions. My side order of mashed potatoes were basic and so was the collard greens. I did get cornbread with my meal and that was also basic as well. I will return again but I will not go out of my way there anytime soon

I was excited because I love soul food but this place was a joke. The Mac & cheese was the worst part. The pasta was over cook & there was very little cheese in it. I wouldn't recommend this plwce

They unfortunately aren't as good as they were a 4-5 years ago. Over time the food has declined in presentation, quality and taste. The ladies that work there aren't quite friendly and give off the impression that I'm a bother instead of a customer ordering/continuing the business. I can't say I won't order from there anymore but there is certainly things I know not to get as the quality and taste aren't the same, which is unfortunate.

I really wanted this place to work out for me. They're food is great. They're customer service is just flat out awful. They will leave you on hold for 10 plus mins. Then tell you their delivery time is two hours. They've been open for years but just can't figure it out. When you decide to pick up they are just as slow. They never have any kind of order. Plus it seems like they're extremely under staffed. They've been understaffed for years. I've finally reached my breaking point with this plus. Not worth the frustration.

Just what I needed on this rainy, cold Saturday. Absolutely delicious and portions are perfect. I got the fried chicken tenders which came with two sides. I got the mashed potatoes and candied yams. I also ordered a side of the baked Mac and cheese. Picture says it all.

I wish I could review food on this review, but it was never received. I placed an order at 7:45 through an app - trying to support local businesses. Sharing a driver, I expected a wait, but as time went on, I logged into my app to check in. Not only did my order go through 3 separate waiting drivers, but when I tried to call the restaurant twice - no answer. When I got through to the delivery driver, he told me he had been waiting outside for 10 minutes before someone came out and told him they were "closed". Mind you, this is a full hour and 15 minutes after my order. Mind you, no one ever reached out to me - the paying customer over this hour and 25 minutes...... Not ok. This may seem petty at a time like this, but BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE is never acceptable. I was a regular customer before this, but that will change.

This is one of my favorite restaurants everything here is delicious. the fried haddock and fried wings my favorite. I would like the patronize this establishment more often but I usually just hang up when the "Rude Jamaican Lady" answers the phone. She has ruined my appetite on more that one occasion.

This place is just amazing! I ordered the catfish with mac and cheese and potato salad, it definitely hit the spot ... The staff was really fast but honestly a little too fast because they ALMOST messed up my order but the woman at the front caught it before they even handed it to me ... I tried the banana pudding and that was also really good ... It's hard to find parking in this area so be prepared to look around for a bit ... Other than that I would have to say this is one of the better soul food spots in Boston !!

Where the hell is my food!!! I've been waiting 2 hours!!!!!!! I've been calling and no one is picking up the phone... NEVER ORDER FROM THIS PLACE!!!! They never deliver and delivery is in their name SMH

For the ignorance shown over the phone, I was expecting this food to be a Hitttttt; it was more like a waste. How are you giving shitty customer service, then serving even shittier food? The girl with the butterfly locks, did I do something to you? Did you know my voice over the phone? Not sure what her problem was; rude taking the order, asked me my name, then hung up, and as ignorant on the person. No seasoning on the chicken, no seasoning in the Mac ( just watery, cheesy, mush), terrible Yams (barely syrup, some pieces were undercooked, definitely lacking nutmeg); then I get there for pickup, the ignorant butterfly lock girl, gonna lie and say she didn't hear my home, girl....... Shut up, you hung up that phone, wrote an N on my receipt, and then they couldn't find my food, because of the lack of customer service by butterfly loc girl. The way she behaved, this food had to be tasty; no, tasteless, just like her customer service. Slades, Maxine' on St. James, because the food there, is worth the wait, and their customer service is definitely better than butterfly locs. Throw out that old lemonade in the fridge, and stop arguing at the register, showing the dysfunction . Damn, I came to leave this review, and realized, they been lacking service. Terrible

When I come back to Boston I am always coming to this place to eat. However, their food is not as great as it was. Today I ordered Boneless ribs, Collard Greens and Macaroni and Cheese. The ribs tasted nice and tender even with the barbeque sauce. The greens were ok, it needed some type of smoked meat in it to add more flavor. The Mac and Cheese texture and taste is watery, eww that is not a good look. The store needs a makeover to make it look soul or southern looking. The furniture doesn't match the decor in the place. It is a good spot to eat again if you are ordering Uber Eats or to take out.

Rolling your eyes at people when they ask you questions about the food isn't the best look for your business. Saying things like hi, hello, can actually go along way. If the sign you have on your board before you go to the register is inaccurate... here's a thought remove it, erase it, hide it. If the sign and menu are in conflict with your current menu fix it and don't take it upon the customer to know the difference and have the nerve to be more rude when people are confused by your set up. Do better! Corn bread was the only thing I liked.

The location is a busy area so finding parking and all that can be tricky so park on the street over or bring some one with you so they can grab the food for you. I called in advance due to the pandemic and the time of my ordering was rush hour. The nice patient lady on the phone told me 20minutes but the food was ready way before that. THANK YOU I ordered the chicken wing dinner with double mac and cheese. The meal came with 5 jumbo flavorful wings but I ate one right when I got in the car along with the cornbread because it smelled too good! Hence why those items aren't in the picture. Wings were SO tasty! well seasoned, tender and not too crunchy but just right. They were easy to break off and cooked perfectly. Mac cheese - very filling, creamy and filled with good flavor. Cornbread- I'm not sure if they have it as a side but I wanted more. It was scrumptious! Next time I'm ordering a side of cornbread Overall I recommend this location for flavorful good soul food. Thank you so much for being open during the pandemic! I appreciate the hospitality, and good food, can't wait to eat there again !

Disclaimer*** This will be a long one :) I am a firm beliver that everyone who works here needs a serious career change...let me explain... Prior to tonight I have never ordered from this restaurant so I went on their website to browse their menu and the site was down so I wasn't able to see the menu but thanks to the yelp reviews I was able to get an idea of what they had to offer. With that being said I called in to place an order for delivery and from the moment this woman picked up the phone she was nasty. She was rude and curt when I asked about the chicken. She was so discourteous I paused for a second debating whether or not to hang up on her. According to my receipt I had the pleasure of speaking to Wanda.....now wanda...babygirl maybe taking orders in a restaurant isn't your thing. Ever heard of the phrase you catch more flies with honey than vinegar??? ...maybe it's time to get a day job sis Anyways, delivery took an hour and when he did finally get here he threw my food at me then turned and walked down my steps. I was so pissed my fingers were itching to come on here and leave a 1 star rating but my food made up for the lack of customer service. I ordered baked chicken that was cooked to perfection (could have used a little salt but hot sauce is there for a kick), candied yams and mac and cheese that was pretty good as well. My meal was very satisfying and I would of happily left a 5 star rating for a black owned business but they need to clean up that customer service. I am debating whether to come again or leave this place alone altogether. The food was great but they have bad customer service. I will leave an update if I decide to.

First off customer service is right off the back rude I called them to let them know that they forgot part of my order, I didn't realize how whoever answer the phone was upset and that I told them they forgot my order who ever I spoke to was like well are delivery drivers are super busy and hung up the phone this Will be my final time ordering from them I've been a loyal customer to them since they open this will be my Last time ordering food from them

The food was delicious! The portions were very generous, one dinner plate was enough for two people. Inside was clean and the service was good. Can't wait to try another plate!

I've been a long time supporter of this restaurant. The food was top notch about 5 years ago and so was their customer service. They've steadily went down hill with good quality and most importantly customer service. Wait times to order vary from 10 minutes to half an hour on hold and then when they do answer they're rude. My food directions are never followed. Sometimes the food is bland and unseasoned. I think I'm done with them. I wanted to support black business very much but I can't keep dealing with their attitudes.

Good food but terrible customer service. The Uber eats driver messed up by not picking up our order from the restaurant. He came to my home without it then canceled it. We called DownHome and they put the blame on us as if WE canceled it. They even confirmed that our food was sitting there and said it couldn't be delivered because it was "cancelled ". We had to get a refund from UberEats and buy food elsewhere. Never again.

I eat here at least once a week. They have AWESOME FRIED WINGS. The Mac and cheese is DELICIOUS. I love the customer service. When I'm not in a run I like that I can dine in. You definitely have to ordeR the fish early in the weekends. Definitely stop by.
