14 New York Bars Where You Can Watch Football | Eater

"If you want a dive that’ll take you back to your old college bar, look no further than Down the Hatch. Tucked away in Greenwich Village, this low-key bar is a go-to for sports fans and locals alike. The drinks are inventive and the food hits the game-day spots (you can’t go wrong with the chicken wings and crispy tater tots). Order your favorite rum-based cocktail, grab some grub, and settle in — it’s going to be a good game, no matter how your team plays." - Julia Gómez Kramer

"COVID-19 update: Open for pickup. Ariane Goldman had her lightbulb moment five years ago when she was pregnant with her daughter and couldn’t find many fashionable options for her growing size. Her months of searching resulted in Hatch, an easy-to-wear line geared toward mothers before, during, and postpregnancy. There are staples, like a striped bateau and chambray tops, as well as special pieces, like the Noa Jumper, a versatile linen jumpsuit with adjustable knotted straps, and the Ziggy Pant, which features a stitched smocked waistband to accommodate an expanding waist. Dressing rooms have a size chart to help you figure out how a piece might fit, depending on where you are in your pregnancy and—best yet—there’s a cravings bar stocked with candy, pickles, you name it. COVID-19 disclaimer: We are working hard to keep our listings as up to date as possible (deliveries, outdoor dining, etc.), but given the evolving nature of local COVID-19 restrictions, we recommend double-checking the information in this guide with any business you plan on visiting. Also, please note that we have not vetted any businesses listed within our guides for their compliance with applicable safety regulations."

Google
This has become one of my go-to spots when hanging out with friends. The drink menu is solid, the music always hits a nice mix that keeps everyone happy, and the vibe is easygoing but fun. If you’re ordering food, the garlic parmesan wings are a must, they’re ridiculously good and always disappear fast. One of the bartenders makes an incredible alcoholic green tea that’s not on everyone’s radar, but it’s absolutely worth asking for. Great atmosphere, great flavors, and an all-around awesome place to spend the night.

I sleep with recommended on TikTok by chefs on where to go after work. I happen to be in the area so I thought I would stop by. Well, I was surprised to find that it was more of a neighborhood bar. I was happy to see that they have one of the best happy hours in town. Nobody was there, but the drinks were great. Everything was half off and they have a lot of weekly specials. I will definitely go back. It’s cute. It’s simple. It was quiet at the time. I went good recommendation also the chicken wings which I got boneless were excellent and fries even better.

Google
We really enjoyed this spot! The vibe was nice, it felt like the spot you would go for a couple drinks after work on your way home or happy hour on Friday. Good drink specials that you can't pass up for NY prices!

Google
A true dive! We were looking for a place to eat and watch some football while walking around the city and this was the perfect place. The place was filled with younger locals enjoying draft beer deals with college football on. We ordered half price boneless wings and a couple of beers and left without spending $40! The wings and fries were great, and we even recommended Down the Hatch to someone else in the area! The perfect spot for us, but may not be for everyone going down those steps to the front door, and that's alright!

Google
This bar! This bar is fun. Saturday night in spring pouring rain and found shelter in THIS BAR! We stumbled in wet, tipsy and found a very cozy warm bar to hold up in. This bar did not feel supper NYC but at the same time it did. Everyone was so friendly and happy as if the whole place just had a great full day and wanted to wind down and have fun. We went on a Saturday night not crazy packed but comfortable bartender was so funny in such a pleased mood cracking jokes, felt like he was a home and just being the best host. It was dark with string light and definitely divey. I got a pretty good martini sitting at the bar. We came back on a Monday a few weeks later to find it super packed and very lively not as fun cuz sometimes too packed can be overwhelming but everyone was just having fun, we ran into a couple of SNL cast members who seem to be regulars there and that was super fun. I definitely recommend for having fun and laughs. We will be stopping by again in a few months for a follow up and video will be posted via TikTok and Insta

Google
We were looking for a dive bar to grab a drink after traveling from Baltimore. The drinks are great, and I expectantly the food is great! Prob my the best tater tots I've had! They are crispy! We had the chicken sandwich and it was amazing! Crispy and had coleslaw on the sandwich. It made it incredible messy but so delicious!

Google
Always a great place to enjoy some delicious wings and a beer! I always take a trip back in time when visiting since my husband found this place as a USMA Cadet (20 years ago!) on weekend leave and we stop by every time we are in the city. This time we brought our kids back!! We sat on the patio and enjoyed our time together, even though I wasn’t able to eat indoors. Thankful that option is offered!

Google
I'm sure it's fantastic for locals who are looking for your run-of-the-mill basic beer options, but as visitors we were hoping for some more authentic local NY beer options. As far as food, we got the Lemon Garlic Pepper and the Honey BBQ wings with Waffle Fries, but the Honey BBQ wings were the only one of those items that we really enjoyed and honestly the only reason I consider giving the food any stars at all. Staff was friendly, everything was pretty affordable, and it has a nice atmosphere. If you're hungry for wings and thirsty for any kind of beer it's an alright choice

Yelp
I ended up at Down the Hatch with two former classmates after hosting a school party, and we actually had a good time. The vibe was fun, and they even had a beer pong table, which added to the energy of the night. The DJ was great and kept everyone moving, which honestly made the whole experience for me. I truly believe that whether you have a great time at a bar depends entirely on the DJ that night, so my experience might not be everyone else's. The crowd was lively, and the drinks were fine, but nothing stood out as amazing. Overall, I'd give it three stars. I had fun and would go back again if I happened to be in the area, but it's not somewhere I'd plan a whole night around.

Yelp
Down the hatch have some of the best barbecue wings ever. The wings are saucy and flavorful. I keep hearing about the garlic parmasean wings that I haven't tried yet. Definitely stop by and have some wings.

Yelp
This dive bar in the West Village is tucked away underground, with a large but cozy vibe. There are plenty of TVs and when we went on a Monday night, they were playing both the football and baseball games. They have plenty of games and the volume is turned down so you can still have a conversation while watching tv. The drinks are very reasonably priced, especially for the west village, with beers, wines, and cocktails as well. Staff was very friendly and helpful when we left something behind and came to pick it up the next day!

Yelp
I came here recently with a friend to watch the 49ers game. A classic sports bar. We shared an order of the tater tots and they were very good.

Yelp
I always love coming here! Wings are amazing. Great vibe. Even if you aren't college age still a great place to catch a game. Must go to everytime I visit! Was originally recommended 10 years ago by an NYPD officer when I asked where to go to watch the NBA playoffs.

Yelp
You couldn't pay me to hate this place. Down the Hatch might be one of the last true dive bars where you can get a deal and come out on top. I used to frequent this place for happy hour when I worked in the area but hadn't been back in ages. I was recently here on a Saturday with a friend in town. We had over an hour to kill before our dinner reservation and wanted somewhere to pass the time that wouldn't break the bank. Down the Hatch was serving $5 cans on a Saturday, which even included an alcoholic seltzer, so we were in. $10ish bucks each later, we were feeling good and not poor, so it was a win. The place wasn't overly crowded despite this deal. Ambiance is a dive bar, but relatively clean and unrowdy. I hope this place never closes and continues to be a spot where you can hang out with friends without going broke on drinks.

Yelp
Came back here for some wings. Cool bar, although it seems louder now, good service, but sadly the wings were a huge disappointment. At the start of the pandemic, there were still atomic wings. I'm sad to say that they no longer carry these and you can definitely taste the difference. I ordered the hot wings and at first glance they didn't look like they were coated with any sauce. Good hot wings have a decent ratio of saucy to crunchy. These wings were DRY. No sauce in the container to speak of and barely any on the chicken. Flavorless! I literally had to fix these with a bottle of Frank's red hot buffalo sauce. Considering that the price on a lot of things have gone up in this bar including the wings, I don't want to pay for something I'll have to fix when I get home. I'm glad I got to go there before congestion pricing kicked in because these wings are not worth the toll. I will stay my behind in Brooklyn.

Yelp
I have been going to Down the Hatch and the other bars from the NYCBestBar group (Off the Wagon, 3 Sheets Saloon, Jake's Dilemma) for over 20 years but unfortunately they have changed for the worse. Down the Hatch, in particular isn't the same as it used to be. We used to go to these bars for the fun atmosphere and cheap drinks but prices have gone up considerably. In the past I would pay around $7 for a domestic pitcher during happy hour and around $13 during regular hours but right now it's $12 during happy hour and $22, yes $22 during regular hours for a Coors light pitcher. If you opt for Blue Moon or other imported beer it's more expensive. If you opt for a domestic pint during regular hours you'll pay almost the same you would pay at a bar in midtown. They no longer serve the famous Atomic Wings, instead they make it in house. It's tasty but not as tasty as the old Atomic Wings. On the plus side the music is still good, bartenders friendly and the vibe is nice, but I miss the old Down the Hatch!

Yelp
Solid bar with decent service. Food was actually surprisingly good, had buffalo wings and a chicken sandwich with onion rings, real drunk boy behavior. Scarfed it down and kind of wanted more. They have table games in the back, spot is kind of small though but it got the job done. I'll absolutely be back.

Yelp
SO unexpected, walking back to get more pizza from L'Industry and decided to stop on down here 1st, and SO much FUN. Great vibes neighborhood. Perfect ending to a fun Sunday evening stroll. Lilly serving us cocktails and a super fun connection was the stand out. Loved the music and her recommendation to have lunch at Planta Queen. Great finds. CHEERS!

Meini C.

Yelp
Great little happy hour spot in the Greenwich area. Entire bar is half off and after 8pm, they offer $1 wings.
google avatar

Taylor Z.

Yelp
Typical basement bar. Lots of tvs if you're watching a game but mostly a dancyish bar to start the night.

Joe L.

Yelp
I was SCAMMED at this place; a $5 beer special was advertised and I confirmed with the bartender that draft beers were included. He even handed me a receipt showing $20 after four beers! However, checking my credit card statement later showed that I had been charged $45. They seemed to intentionally deceive me on this front and even when I took it up with them afterwards they refused to acknowledge their mistake and give me a refund. AVOID THIS PLACE.

Yelp
Hole in the wall bar in west village. Very dive bar/sports bar. Good for group hangs. Good selection of beer and cocktails.

Yelp
This is a quintessential dive bar. It's hard to notice down some steps. The neighborhood is full of pretentious restaurants. This was a great find. We came on a Sunday afternoon. It was busy enough. Bottles and cans were only $5 which is a steal in NYC. We decided to go ahead and order a bit of food. We split a double cheeseburger with waffle fries. It was an amazing burger! Just what you would expect from a dive bar...flavorful, a little greasy, and a toasted bun. The waffle fries were also really good. You have to order everything at the bar which is a pain in the a$$. There was only one person working the bar when we were there and they were having a hard time keeping up. It's clearly a locals bar which is what we love! Also, if you're in the mood, they have beer pong set up and ready to go!

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Lived in the neighborhood 10 years. Super fun bar. Katie and Kirk who work on Saturdays are the best! Beers for $5. Couldn't ask for a more fun spot to hang.

Yelp
Amazingly The Wings and Atmosphere is Just as I Remember it Going Back to Even 20 Years Ago When I First Started Visiting This Location.
google avatar

Supriya D.

Yelp
This place is a dump and people literally only come here for cheap Jell-O shots. Today couldn't come in because I was wearing ugg slides? Meanwhile the crowd was ratchet inside. Never coming back. Can't wait til a new bar opens in this space when this inevitably closes.

Yelp
W 4th Street bar in NY Univ hood. Take a few steps down from street level to Down The Hatch and you got Drinks, TVs and Best drinks in West Village. Fully stocked bar and positive, high energy Keyla gets it all going for guests. The music is bumping funky and plenty of TVs for all sports activities.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is the perfect chill bar. Such a great vibe. The bartenders are cool and nice to talk to. The service is great. The food comes out fast and it's surprising delicious for a bar. The burger here has beat some burgers in restaurants and diners that I've tried. It's a very juicy double cheeseburger. They have a full bar but only American beers, no imports. They have beer pong set up in the rear and darts. Numerous tvs, each showing different sports. Festive lights flickering throughout with the feel of a dive bar. Happy Hour is Everyday until 7pm which is awesome and very rear. I highly recommend this spot. Just pop in and try it and I'm sure you will be a returning customer
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome spot friendly staff great happy hour deals, I would highly recommend Down the Hatch!

Yelp
Basic drinks and strong pours at great prices (for NYC). Loved our adventure to find this highly recommended bar. Bartender was great at giving us recommendations for NYC nightlife. Doorman was also friendly. Tiny bathrooms, but that's part of the charm!

Yelp
The service I experienced here has been amazing. A couple weeks ago I went here and ended up loosing a necklace that meant so much too me. It was something that was really bothering me so I reached out to management there to see if they could check the cameras for me to see what happened to it, and they have just been so kind and helpful. Lucas, especially was empathetic of my situation and has done everything in his power to connect me to the right people. Taylor and Kurk, were two other people who I have spoken with and could not be more appreciative of their efforts to help me try a future out what happened to my necklace. They are working with me weeks after to help me. I highly recommend swinging by Down the Hatch. They deserve the business.

Yelp
The Great Man Theory posits that history can be explained by the impact of a few great men (ex. Alexander the Great, George Washington, Winston Churchill, YNW Melly, etc.). Their actions had a profound impact on those who lived during their time and on those who lived after. To be considered part of their ilk is the closest us mortals can come to immortality. That is why I am so passionate about pushing every bar in the tri-state area to install floor piss grates throughout their establishments to empower everyone of every background to piss through said grates whilst wearing water repellant robes to conceal their "pieces" (or you can just let people go full action bronson on the dance floor who cares). This would enable patrons to avoid long bathroom lines and instead spend more time blacking out on Long Island iced teas. Will you join me in my revolution, or will you be left behind to the decrepit annals (lol) of history.

Yelp
I had my birthday here this year and had a pretty good time. They have a really nice and easy open bar package for groups that's $60 per person for a 3 hour open bar. I knew ahead of time that I wouldn't have a private room but was a little disappointed when I got there and they didn't even have any sort of assigned area for my group. I was also a little unimpressed with how uncoordinated the check in process was. I was told my guests would come to the bouncer, pay $60, and receive a wristband, and instead the guy with the wristbands was hanging out inside the bar so people were on a wild goose chase to find him all night. Ironically, it was very easy to coordinate with them beforehand and everyone I spoke to on the phone was great, it was just chaos the night of. I will say that they were very generous with the open bar. It was a little unclear beforehand whether actual cocktails were included or just mixed drinks, but they didn't limit us to mixed drinks. The bartenders were fast and I don't think anyone waited very long at all. They served a cake to me at one point and held onto it until the next day which was amazing! I was shocked when we were able to pick it up intact. All in all, there were a few kinks, but it was a nice night and I would consider having a party there again in the future.

Yelp
PRICE · $ x 1.5 POSITIVE · West Villlage · Hot ladies · Smart ugly ladies · Beer pong table · TVs for catching up on games NEGATIVE · Can be ethinically homogenous like how one would feel about gentrification (... on the border with whether this is a negative or positive). IMPRESSION · It's a good spot to add to a list of bars to hop to and from.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Lucas was the best bartender. He gave us recommendations for other places for pizza and cannolis. We couldn't have had a better time during the Knicks win.
google avatar

Ashlee S.

Yelp
Cheap drinks and a good time! I've been here a few times with friends and I leave pretty satisfied. The drinks are cheap and with the right group, you'll have a blast. Don't go looking for an amazing experience as this is truly a dive bar. The inside is pretty small but when the weather is nice, sitting outside is much better.

Nicolas R.

Yelp
I truly don't write reviews out of spite, but this one left a bad taste in my mouth. There was nobody at the door to greet me so I sat myself down. The bartender calls someone who I thought was going to be the server over to me, to ask me for my ID. So I did, and the server/bouncer/manager walked away. At the 20 minute mark there still was no server, this was at 6:20pm. This upset me and I walked out and to a different restaurant. The vibe of this place is also very off, like they're prison wardens. Might I add that the one person that I did encounter seemed as if he didn't want me there. However, online it seemed like a nice place to dine out. Very misleading, and I don't think anyone should patronize a business that treats their paying customers like crap.
google avatar

Lauryn H.

Yelp
Mediocre customer service. Outdated online menu. Food was decent at best. Would only come back because they played great music and had $5 Jell-O shots.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I met at Down the Hatch 27 years ago and tonight we brought our oldest child, our Hatchling, to celebrate his 21st birthday. Gabe and the entire staff were a reminder of how awesome the Hatch was and will always be.
google avatar

Paul E.

Yelp
This is a great spot with solid drink deals and friendly bartenders (Lucas, Kirk). $5 cans including Nutrl. Definitely recommend! They also have weekend bottomless deals.
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
Love this place. They have one of the best happy hours in the West Village and on top of that there bar food is pretty good as well! Rustic but homey feel. The servers/bar tenders have always been kind and welcoming every time I stop by here.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Went here for brunch. Got the bottomless mimosas and some wings. The place definitely changed since covid. Pre-pandemic the food and drinks were bottomless for an extended time. Now only the drinks are bottomless and it's only for 90 mins. After our 90 mins were up, we had additional drinks at the bar. I have no complaints about this place. The waiters and bartenders were friendly. The wings were good. Although they changed their bottomless brunch, it was nice to see they survived the pandemic.

Gatangalie S.

Yelp
No joke! A colleague of mine took me to Down the Hatch for my first drink in 2005 and I fell in love with kettle one & cranberry, atomic wings and waffle fries. One of the coolest and well known dive kinda bar in the village for happy hour specials like seriously 1/2 off prices on all alcohol beverages and they make their drinks stiff!!! Perfect place to go for drinks with a group of coworkers, friends or have a casual date. They have great deals on drinks, the best atomic wings in NYC, juicy waffle fries and good variety of music. Don't forget to take a shot at their ping pong tables and flirt with the boys! Most importantly, I'd recommend you bring a business card and drop it into the fish bowl. Try your luck to win one hour of free happy hour! Have fun!!!

Ethan S.

Yelp
Bouncer was hitting on girls that he turned away for being underage. Bartender was also being creepy towards the girls in my group. Decent prices I guess but it's not enough to save this place.
google avatar

Peonia E.

Yelp
Great little dive bar, love the name, cold beer, good cocktails, very accommodating staff. Lots of fun and my apologies if some of us were annoying ha ha:-)
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
the fries and wings simply put are what you want here and maybe a matching drink to go with it. this place is what you want to end with. the wings are crispy and juicy. the fries are crispy and perfect not oily. there are plenty of beer options that you can have try to come early and not on the weekend because it does get packed.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
I went in this spot around 6 to kill time before I was headed to somewhere else. This spot is nice inside, TVs all over, they play music through there wall speakers and it has some bar finger food available. If your a person that likes to go and sit, drink and watch sports then you'll be fine. The food I would skip as it wasn't good. I had the nachos and they were gross.
google avatar

Carly R.

Yelp
Whoever DJ'd last night on June 9, 2023 actually was the worst. Play better music. I felt like I was transported back to 2016 in the least pleasant way possible. Ruined the vibes and was mf weird.
google avatar

Catherine T.

Yelp
This place right here reminds me of my good ole college nights. I would come here for their cheap beer and beer pong. They also have one of the best wings I've had (definitely in my top 5 list). Bartenders are always nice, n they always have good music playing. They have 2 beer pong tables in the back for those that play. They always have great happy hour deals too. Good place to catch your best sport on tv.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is the best. Great food, drinks, chill vibes, super kind staff. all the bars owned by them are awesome
google avatar

Suhani J.

Yelp
I'm such a fan. I had an absolute blast here, there is tons of space as it's an underground type place. Only knock is the prices, but that's New York for ya. Didn't eat, just got drinks but the vibes were awesome!
google avatar

Anggie B.

Yelp
It's ok. Waiting for my check to know how cheap (or not) this place is. Typical new york bar.

Yelp
It's a dive. It's an awesome dive. A fun time fueled by cold beer, great staff, good music and great drunk food! First of all each time we've been in we've been lucky enough to hang out with Katie the bartender - this lady is a winner with a great balance of sweet kid, love of fun and the toughness it takes to manage the likes of Friday night Village crowds. A great tap list includes both local and mass-market beers. Also a full bar with the usual suspects and all priced pretty reasonably. The topper though is a bar food menu that's pretty ridiculous - hot wings a dozen different ways (really good btw), fried macaroni and cheese, juicy onion rings, sliders - whatever you want. If you want to get away from the touristy Village bar scene, this place feels like home - especially if you live in a bar :-)

Giacomo E.

Yelp
I used to be a big fan of this spot. Nice location and they have pong which is a fun game to play with friends. I unfortunately had a really unpleasant experience there with a bar tender yesterday 2/7. The bar tender yesterday was incredibly rude and possibly racist to me and my friends. I walked in with a group of 7 while the bar was entirely empty. He refused to let us play pong because 1/7 people wasn't drinking alcohol. They were willing to buy something else on the menu but he kept on saying if we got something other than alcohol it would be the equivalent of us loitering and ruining his business. He kept saying we were treating it like a library after all of us were drinking except for one person who abstains for religious purposes. I don't know if it was because my group was largely of asian descent but he kept telling us "this isn't a library". I don't know his name but he is the bartender with face tattoos and I have seen him have really rude interactions with people before. This is the first time I've seen it myself and the probably the last time I go or recommend this spot. Very sad.

Yelp
Brotastic dive bar shenanigans. Another stop during our random bar crawl through West Village. We have a couple of hours left to kill before heading back to work. The handy yelp search on the phone says this is within walking distance of the last bar we hit up, so here goes. We weren't specifically searching for DTH, but managed to stumble upon this spot. A few steps down from the street and we enter this little sports dive. It's like the college party moved from the frat house and into the basement. Rowdy is putting it mildly, and in a fun (insert national TV ad beer name) kinda way. It's Saturday night, and Down The Hatch's bar is packed. Not fire marshal level jammed nuts-to-butts, but the bar area sure seemed like it. Maybe 4-5 people deep, but I don't think they're all wanting drinks. It's just that there's not much room or open seating. We got some cheap beers, but no eats. We were on a mission to crawl this part of the city, not settle in any particular spot, although watching the drunken sh!t show develop is worth hanging around. Kinda bummed I didn't have an appetite because the bar bites looked good and the yelp approval rating on the snacks are trending positive. If you're looking for intimate, fancy, or hipster, then this won't be your cup of organic loose leaf tea. If you're good to bro down, then grab some cold beverages, maybe some kitchen snacks to soak up the alcohol, and party on!

Yelp
I've been coming to down the hatch for as long as I can remember! Lucas kills the game and welcomed us in with open arms. Made us feel part of the fam and could not be more grateful. Cheers fam!
