Downtown Bakery

I loved local long before local was cool and this bakery has a lot to love. So excited to find it. Since 1958. Friendly service. Great selection. Very reasonably priced. I wish you many years of profitable business.

My husband and I came in to order a full custom sheet cake for my mom’s birthday party. We had an image picked that we wanted to print to the cake. We were told over the phone that they could print edible images. However, when we got there we were hit with “copyright” infringement comments on every image we picked. They referred us to a book of pre made images. It was inconvenient, but even that all was fine. We had a lot of questions as we needed a full custom sheet cake. The ladies behind the desk were not knowledgeable and finally we asked if we could create an appointment/consultation to discuss the cake. Finally, the lady behind the counter says she can get us to her boss. The boss comes out (her name was Ricky) and throws our order sheet in the air with a clear attitude and says “you’re ordering a cake for over a month away.” Or some smart comment. We should have walked out at that point! Every hand made design we asked for they couldn’t do. Long story short, we were treated HORRIBLY despite the fact that we were prepared to spend a lot of money on a full sheet cake and a couple large trays of cookies. Our needs were not met and we did not feel that they wanted work with us to design the cake that we wanted. We went to Gus Goodies and placed our order the following weekend. They were happy to take our order for OVER A MONTH AWAY and designed our cake exactly like we wanted. We won’t be back to Downtown bakery.

What I thought was a fresh loaf of Italian bread and it was hard like crunchy hard so I don’t know if I got a couple of day or a couple week old bread or if it’s set out too long or what the deal was but definitely not satisfied I mean the price is three bucks so I might just dry it out and make some croutons Definitely wasn’t for the sandwiches that I wanted.

A solid example of a great classic bakery. Everything we tried was good, and we tried a LOT! Will return next time we are back in the area for sure!

Beautiful store front and they make a delicious cake. Shop local folks, it’s one of the biggest ways to bring economic value to your town!

Best cookies ever,would recommend everyone to go get some in town or if you are from out of town take some other best cookies in the country!! Have been going there since I was a child.😁💜

I wonder if they just buy pies from the grocery stores and sell them as their own. I've had 4 occasions, in 4 yrs to get or eat a pie from this bakery and there's simply nothing to rave about. The flavor,texture and quality is just flat. The most recent purchase was at the Wellsburg Apple Festival, an apple pie of course, and it was like eating one of those personal pies you'd get at Walmart; sweet but not homemade or local bakery level quality! Guess it's Krogers next time!

Everyone told us we had to try this bakery but we could have been ok without. The raisin bars were the only thing recommend that were ok. Everything else was dry or subpar. I grabbed what was labeled a cheesecake and it was a GLOB of buttercream.

Very easy to work with. I am from out of town and wanted to order a cake for my Mom's birthday. I called ahead and they helped me order my moms favorite cake (chocolate with cherry filling and whipped cream frosting) that was large enough to feed the whole party and have 2 slices left over for breakfast the next day. I was able to run in the shop, pick up the cake, and couldn't leave without a few dozen butter cookies that I spotted in their display. The cake was delicious and beautiful; I just wish I was able to take a better picture before we devoured it! Thanks for making such a pretty, delicious cake- my family and I will definitely be returning!

This bakery is a Steubenville staple. I remember as a little girl my Aunt and Uncle getting all their Christmas cookies and cakes from the Downtown bakery. My mom and dad also got so many goodies there. The place is wonderful and loved by all. Everything is delicious and the women that work there are the sweetest.

Order was terrible...changed everything. Wasted m y money...must b have new baker or they just don't care

What a gem in downtown Steubenville. I was passing through town and wanted to bring home a few treats. It didn't take long to fill a box. Started with a mini fruitcake (didn't make it to the car), followed by cinnamon raisin rolls, raisin filled cookies and the most insane black forest log. The latter was amazing devils food cake that was filled with the most amazing topping (about an inch thick) and more on top. It's a good thing I don't live closer.

This is absolutely one of the best bakeries in the area! Everything they have here is delectable and deserves to be tried at least once! The glazed doughnuts are better than any doughnut that I have ever tried, the cream filled doughnuts have me hooked and everyone in my office are addicted to their cinnamon roll doughnuts (with and without raisins). They have a huge variety of cookies, as well as pies and cakes. I would without a doubt recommend Downtown Bakery!

Best bakery in the area. I've never had any issue with there service or quality. Everything is always fresh.highly recommended.

The service here is horrendous. The employees act annoyed to have to wait on you. It's sad this is the only bakery in town. The raisin cookies taste like flour paste. Most of the other cookies are shipped in. Do yourself a favor & skip the hassle & bad products...either bake it yourself or go across the river to another bakery.

what a treat it is to have an actual small-town bakery! the experience starts off with a brightly-lit storefront that includes christmas lights and other decorations. inside, there is a huge variety of cookies, donuts, and other fun treats. i bought a bavarian cream puff, a date bar, and a cowboy cookie. every single thing was not only good, but exceedingly delicious. i definitely recommend downtown bakery!

Terrible. Can't get much worse that this. Cooks who make bread and pastry do not wear gloves or face masks. Stay away.

Customer service was absolutely HORRENDOUS. From the moment I called to when I walked in the bakery, they were unfriendly and unaccommodating. I ordered a cake and they wrote the wrong thing on it and were unhelpful when I pointed out the mistake. The cake itself was fine.

I had a sweet tooth today So I stopped in to get a little bit of sweet. What I had after I left there was very disappointing. Some of the small danish tasted stale like they were in a rancid old area. This is not the 1st time those pastries taste that that way it's been several times. Like an old building or something that has bad air. I'm probably not gonna go back there much again because going their several times and getting stale old food is not appealing to me.

I'd like to try a few more things to solidify this rating. Oddly, I bought four things and only one of them was good, so I'm not sure why I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt! But this donut was REALLY good. :) I got an iced jelly filled, and it was among the best of those I've had. The other three things I tried were more in the pastry family (really stale danish, a little nut roll and a littler apricot cookie). Like I said, none of those were impressive. But given the quality of the donut, I will go back and try more.

Absolutely terrible service, man was picking his nose while giving me service. He didn't even think about washing his hands after he did it. And he knew I saw him pick his nose. This was straight rude of him. Its a shame I always liked the Bakery growing up they were known for there smiley face cookies.

Bakery goods are amazing! My complaint is the attitude I get when I go/call. It's like you can't ask a question because that's an inconvenience. I work with the public, I understand that we all have bad days, but you still give the best customer service. Good customer service confirms whether or not I will continue going to a company. I took my business to Gus' Goodies, where they will gladly answer my questions.

Try the glazed donuts and the loaves of bread. The fresh glazed donuts are the best I've ever had, even better than Krispy Kreme. The loaves of bread are fluffy with an excellent crust. It tastes natural and won't weigh you down like a loaf from Kroger. You will not be disappointed! Update: I don't know why the price range on Yelp says "$$$" - everything is very affordable. Loaves of bread are $2, donuts are less than a dollar, cookies are 70 cents or so.

Forget the chain shops, downtown serves up the freshest donuts in town, including some classics you don't find everywhere these days. A wide assortment of donuts, pastries and cookies.

I bought a pineapple pie from this bakery. When I got home the top of the pie had mold growing on it. I immediately took the pie back within an hour of purchasing it. The owner flat out refused to give me the cash back that I had paid. See pointed to a sign stating that there are no cash refunds. However she did give me an in store credit for the amount that I had paid. Before you pay for anything from this bakery inspect your purchase very closely before they close the box. If you are not satisfied with your purchase from this bakery please report it to the Steubenville Health Department as I did. The Health departments phone number is 740-283-6000

Downtown bakery will always be the best when u move away from steubenville people can't wait to get this taste again when they come home for a visit always will be NO1

Where do I start? I cannot say enough good stuff about this place. I spent my entire high school years going here for lunch. Yes I became fat by the time I graduated. But my taste buds thanked me for it. Everyone likes Krispy Kreme donuts. Give me a downtown bakery donut over KK anyday!
