Houston Restaurant Closings to in 2024 - Eater Houston

"After 67 years of operation in Fulshear, the longstanding barbecue joint will finish its last day of service on March 30. Founded in 1967 by Ed Dozier, who won the inaugural Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Barbecue Cook-off that same year, the barbecue restaurant is known for its consistent offerings of the Texas Trinity — ribs, brisket, and sausage — and sides like coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. It was a hotspot for the former elite of D.C. and Hollywood, hosting Texas political figures such as President George H.W. Bush, according to the Houston Chronicle." - Courtney E. Smith

It is so sad they closing out after 67 years, however i read they sold the store not too long ago, we went today and im so sorry but they played us dirty with the portion, if you guys would kept the same portions even though a price increase( which everything went hight after covid) probably the store would be still open , we went last week as well and same portions mall not even accurate with today’s, my husband got 3 baby tiny ribs and also dry, wish i would have taken a picture from ls week to compare my 2 inches very thin cut brisket . Pic with Boudin for few months ago, pic with the bread 3 weeks ago

Ordered brisket (moist, not lean), pork ribs, and German sausages. Brisket was flavourful, but not the melt-in-your-mouth standard. Pork ribs were off-the-bone! Sadly, both the ribs and sausages were a tad too salty, which robs the BBQ smokiness. Coleslaw lacks depth - taste like cabbage topped with diluted ranch - but baked potato salad wins the day - perfect texture and taste! Staff were mostly friendly and courteous. For the price, there are other BBQ joints in Houston to aim for...alas, we're in Fulshear 🙂 Second time here and briskets were remarkably improved 🤤 Ham and sausages sadly still sub-par.

My wife and I first time here. Found them through an upcoming burger challenge post on Facebook. They are a competitor in it. Apparently, they only do burgers on Friday so we decided to split a three meat plate. We got moist and lean brisket with sausage and a side of coleslaw and green beans. We also got two iced teas. The staff was very friendly and prompt. The food was good. The sausage came with an unusual mustard that I had to ask about. It is made with tumeric, mustard, paprika and vinger...it tasted good. They also have a meat market...which was nice. I bought some venison sausage and a pepper salami...both look yummy. I am sure we will be back. BTW - the burger is only Fridays and the sell out fast...usually in a few hours.

Google
Well, we gave it the old college try. Is it good? Yes. Is it worth an hour drive? Eh. Ribs and sausage were surprisingly tough. But that brisket and sauce make a dang good sandwich

Google
Visited for their new brunch experience. Between us we had Brisket on a Biscuit, Chicken Fried Brisket and Pancakes, Brisket Hash, and The Burger. To drink we had tea, Cranberry Mimosa, and a Michelada. . We ordered at the counter and sat in a booth. The tea was from a fountain, but we had to wait 5 minutes for the cocktails. The food was served as it was ready. . The crust on the chicken fried brisket was fantastic. The burger was huge and delicious. . The only complaint was that the ranchero sauce on the hash was far too spicy for the guest. The biscuit could have used more gravy. The taste was there, however. . It was a good experience. The place is spacious inside with tasty food.

Google
We had a great experience at Dozier's. We had the moist brisket, pork ribs, sausage, sides of Texas caviar, and potato salad, and they were all excellent. The moist brisket was exquisite with a smoky flavor and seasoning. The ribs fall off the bones as one would expect, and the sausage was terrific. The staff were amicable and told us how to order as we go down the food line - cold items first, then the hot items. We will go back there to eat again. Love this place!

Google
THANK YOU, Lord! Truly old school, Texas BBQ still lives. Worth the drive.

Google
My second time to eat here since they switched owners. I had the brisket sandwich and was pleasantly surprised. The bun was excellent and the brisket was thick and tender. The young boys on the service line, meat cutters, were very attentive and polite as well as the young lady cashier. it was good. I'm editing my review because I spoke with some folks who said they got a new pit boss, 2 weeks ago. I could easily tell the difference in the BBQ and he certainly made a good brisket. I'll be back 4 sure!

Yelp
I understand they've closed now, which is sad, as I started going there back in 1979. It was still good, albeit not as good as I remembered. At least I've got the memories.

Yelp
That absolutely wasn't my reason for my complaint and obviously the picture isn't showing a true story of what was received. Obviously fat gives the flavor and while some fat is totally acceptable but all 2 lbs of pieces that had more fat than ACTUAL meat to enjoy is definitely not worth it. No place I've ever seen to has made me have to request for lean cut and I shouldn't have to, I should receive pieces with the proper fat portion on the meat so it tasty NOT mostly FAT is what I was referring to.

Yelp
I tried Dozier's for the first time when we got our Thanksgiving smoked turkey breast this year. The place was nice and clean, and very efficient. There were diners, shoppers and people picking up Thanksgiving orders all at the same time when I was there. I was on and out in 5 minutes. The smoked Turkey was outstanding - moist and tender with a delicious smoked flavor. The vacuum-packed turkey was very easy to store and prepare. All of our guests raved about how good it was. I will definitely be back to dine in and bring something home from the market. I only gave four stars because I haven't tried the restaurant yet.

Yelp
BBQ brisket is tender. Love the sauce. Quick service and picnic style booths and outdoor selections are comfortable.

Yelp
I've been eating Dozer's BBQ for more than 20 years. The food is better now than ever before. The service has always been friendly and excellent and still is all these years later. Jim, the new manager/ operator is my kind of guy...the real deal. Excellent BBQ! The new decor is very cool and the welcoming small town ambiance always makes me feel a sense of gratitude. Keep up the great work guys. We love you. -Chef Lori Pope

Yelp
Brutal lunch special chopped beef - worst BBQ I ever had - the place is super expensive too. I won't be stopping there again.

Yelp
Very nice hometown place. The food is good. Their fresh bacon is the best! I enjoy the large baked potatoes! The employees are always friendly. The atmosphere is fun because it's a local company & nor a franchise.

Yelp
Local historic favorite. Especially good for casual get-togethers or for takeout, but Not for finer dining.

Yelp
Plus half a star. Really impressed with this place. I have lived in Fulshear for 3-4yrs now. Always drove past it. Never thought much of it. Finally, stopped in and happy I did. The food options are plentiful. Sausage, brisket, pork ribs, etc. Today tried several options. Brisket was moist and tender. Great smoke ring. Nice bark. Pork Ribs::: Tons of smoke. Great bark. Turkey:: Oddly enough probably the best part. Well seasoned. Super tender and moist. Probably my favorite option. Broccoli slaw: Very good. Crisp and refreshing. However I could only have it sparingly due to its sweetness. Not bad in anyway but takes time to get it finished. Mac and cheese:: Super thick and cheesy. Seasoned with something I couldn't put my finger on. Finally the Banana pudding:: It's pudding. It's banana. How could it NOT be super tasty. The ordering process is weird. It's like backwards. The deserts are presented first. Then cold sides. Then hot sides. Then the meats.... Prices are a touch above the average. The inside is really really nice. Lots of seating area. I was really surprised by the amount of seating and how clean it was. Overall really enjoyable experience. Definitely scratches your BBQ itch.

Yelp
Visited yesterday for a late lunch. I got a pulled pork sandwich w broccoli slaw and my friend got a brisket sandwich w baked potato salad. Would have liked my meat to be hotter and juicer. They have indoor and outdoor seating w a patio area. Solid place to get BBQ.

Yelp
Every time we have family visiting from out of town we bring them to Dozier's. Fantastic BBQ!!

Yelp
Great BarBQ and friendly relaxed atmosphere. Great place in downtown Fulshear. Quick service and consistent meals. Glad they are here for good food and convenience. We will go back.

Yelp
I had heard about this place and I'm glad that I was able to go out to Fulshear and give it a try. It was some pretty solid barbecue, and the loaded baked potato salad was delicious. If in the area, definitely give it a go. I had a half pound of brisket, two ribs, and an individual side which ended up costing about $25. I probably could have done with a little bit less food. My bad I guess for not knowing how much to order, but that's why I prefer places that just offer a "plate" style rather than selling by weight. It would also be nice if they offered fountain drinks be it soda or water rather than cans/bottled beverages. The place is pretty neat. It's both a barbecue joint and a general store. But I don't know how much shopping happens here by non tourists. There is also some cool history on the walls. The recently added outdoor space with a cool "Fulshear" text mural that I probably should have taken a picture of is nice, but it was way too hot to spend any time out there.

Yelp
Food was over priced not to mention service wasn't what I expected. I saw at least three employees on their cell including management not impressed
google avatar

Terry T.

Yelp
A few weeks ago we stopped here because it was convenient. I ordered a moist brisket and my wife had a potato loaded with moist brisket. Both were outstanding. We have been back with family and several times by ours. The moist brisket has been delicious and juicy moist every time.

Yelp
Food is decent, but $20 for a sandwich and two sides with no drink? What a joke! Asked about a large order or their potato salad (1 gallon) and was told $55 or somewhere around there! These people have lost their mind!!! Your food is decent but not made of gold.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm sure the BBQ is good, I don't know, I do my own bbq. But I've been taking my deer to Doziers to process for the last 14 year but not anymore. Picked up my two deer today and made red beans and rice for dinner. Sadly I'm now not a fan of their deer processing and the way the new owners make the sausage. Not anywhere near as good as it was. Dry and no flavor, just not up to what I've come to expect over the years. Now I Will have to find a new processor for the next one. Sad.

Yelp
Had our grandson's signing day here. They were able to host around 30 people with ease. Great food and great times.

Shanna G.

Yelp
I'm not one to write bad reviews but I was thoroughly disappointed in this experience. I will say both the brisket and sausage did have good flavor but after spending $60 for brisket and sausage, having half of the brisket end up in the trash hurt. The brisket was literally so fatty that half of it had to be trimmed off and thrown away, this was straight fat, what was left after was still very fatty, the sausage was very oily as well, completely soaked through all of the wrapping. We try to support the locals but I just can't with this one. Edited to add: We are not new to the TX BBQ game. We understood the pricing and know that BBQ is getting more expensive by the day and we were willing to pay the price, expecting good BBQ. We also understand how to order brisket, we ordered half and half (half lean/half moist) but what we received was practically all fat, beyond even what a full moist order should be. It's like they seasoned and cooke it with the entire fat cap on, not trimmed before or after cooking.

Yelp
This place goes in most improved restaurant ,have not been here in over 10 years From this visit the restaurant was clean , staff friendly , ice in the drink machine and bbq good. There were many sides to chose from. , I was there for the bbq and a slice of bread. The sauce is on the table , sweet with a little kick to it
google avatar

Jack L.

Yelp
Food was great...the slaw, the potato salad, the beans, and two full slabs of dry rub ribs. Excellent sauces too! But why only 2 stars? The tab for the above without drinks was.....$97.00!!! Yeah, the food was good, but it ain't nearly a hundred dollars good. Especially when everything is self served on paper trays and plastics. We just moved nearby to Weston Lakes so we have money. But as much as we would like to support local businesses, we don't wanna get gouged. Definitely ain't coming back!

Chris S.

Yelp
I frequent this place weekly. I heard it changed ownership recently and you can notice an elevated customer service experience. The brisket is always moist and has great bark. They also have the best fajita meat to take home to grill.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. Seems like a typical country meat market/ BBQ joint. Easy to order & friendly staff. Ordered a lean sliced brisket sandwich, didn't come with a side, but I got corn for extra.... Came on the standard white bun, decent sandwich and good corn. Biggest miss was the sauce, their bbq sauce is land and even the spicy version tastes like Tabasco was poured into it.
google avatar

Jim W.

Yelp
Everyone who lives in Texas has a favorite source for barbecue and maintains that their favorite is the best, hands-down. Dozier's gets my vote. Long-time, family-owned place that smokes great brisket, chicken and hot links. Sauce is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. Sides are excellent (potato salad might be the best I've ever had). HIGHLY recommended!

Michelle B.

Yelp
Personally, hated it. Ribs were hard and I guess we went at the wrong time - no sides. Kids couldn't even eat. Wasted $75 on nothing
google avatar

Yelp
I have been going to Doziers for 30 years and seen it change a lot . It used to be a place where my family and I really enjoyed eating, but recently has gone down hill. Here is our most recent experience: For 2 of us to eat it cost about $50!!! Their prices have gone WAY up, and now it is just too expensive for a BBQ place. The meats are excellent! Great juicy brisket that falls apart, nice ribs that have a crispy exterior, good tasting sausage! The sides are just plain bad, and overpriced. The coleslaw is just an overwhelming dumpster fire of malt vinegar, the beans taste like they are straight out of a can, the baked potato salad is cold? (baked potato salad should be served hot), the potato salad is bland, the mac & cheese taste like it's straight out the box, Texas Caviar is bland, and they don't have fried okra (which most BBQ places offer). The only good tasting side they have is the green beans (which were overcooked a soggy). I am honestly sad about how expensive Doziers has gotten, and the lack of good tasting sides they now offer. Hopefully they can turn it around by realizing they are a BBQ restaurant, not fine dining, and they will bring down the prices. Hopefully they can get someone in there that actually has tastebuds and realizes that their sides are awful.

Yelp
Great barbecue! Exceptional pecan smoked peppercorn bacon! Love the new outdoor area!

Yelp
This place used to be great a long time ago, so I brought my parents over an hour away to visit and purchase meat from the butcher shop. We were hungry, so we ordered sandwiches, and the bill seemed a little high. I went to the counter and questioned the bill and was met with hostility from a young dark haired male with glasses claiming to be one of the managers. It was discovered that my elderly parent was over charged, and instead of apologizing, the young boy became confrontational with me due to my complaint. He then said loudly that he didn't want to help me, left the counter, and proceeded to visibly bad mouth me to every other employee in the store, and in a tone where other customers could here. Even with the inconvenience of the overcharge and embarrassment of having to even deal with this situation, the Hispanic lady/cashier who claimed to be a manager refused to refund or replace the disgusting chopped (ground) beef sandwich that my mom could not even eat. See the picture below. The beans were bland disgusting as well. A restaurant interested in customer service and retaining customers in this economy would go above and beyond to apologize and refund or at least replace the sandwich, but she refused to do either, instead offering to throw a little bit of sliced brisket on the already disgusting sandwich. What qualified manager or decent establishment would treat a customer, especially an elderly customer in that manner? This place is clearly not geared towards providing good service to every customer, so think before you go to this establishment. The sad part about it is that we left without getting the butcher meat that we actually came for due to the treatment received in the hot deli. We wasted three hours of our travel time and gas. This will be the last time we visit this establishment.

Yelp
Love this restaurant. Great barbecue, super friendly staff. The updates and additions to the property is well done and has really enhanced the dine-in experience. It's even more fun when they have live music!

Linda G.

Yelp
Well, like any business if it's not looked after it goes down hill, the last few times we have gone the meat is always cold. For the price charged it should be on point. Today I witnessed more than one server eating the food with a spoon. Tasting etc.. Its perfectly fine for the employees to eat but get a plate or bowl please.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Nice meat market and restaurant to the side with plenty of outdoor seating. Barbecue brisket was very tasty. Would have enjoyed pulled pork but they do not offer that on the menu.
google avatar

Jim R.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Excellent BBQ although their baked potatoes are usually undercooked. The meat market is outstanding and they have the best bacon anywhere around and the prices are unbeatable. The entire staff is always very friendly and helpful. Clean and well lit. Wait...if I say they are amazing then more people will go there and prices will increase. No...this place sucks so all you city people need to go somewhere else!!

Yelp
Let me start by saying that this place has been around for a very long time. My parents would take a Sunday drive here when my brother and I were kids..30+ years ago. My husband and I were passing thru the area for a wedding, we wanted bbq and I remembered Dozier's. The place still looked the same, of course some improvement, but basically the same. The front of the place is a small, country style, grocery store & the bbq is in the back. We ordered a chopped beef sandwich and the 3 meat selection of ribs, sausage and sliced beef. Beans, coleslaw and baked potato salad (served cold..not hot). Self serve soda/tea & fixings for ur bbq. The meat was tender enough, bbq sauce was thin and lacked flavor. Not exciting.. I cannot whole heartedly say the bbq was just as good as I remember. Maybe we enjoyed the drive back then or maybe something's changed about the place. Either way, I can say, I went back recently but can't promise I would again.

Yelp
Been awhile since I've been in to grab a bite to eat. Used to drop off deer to be processed here decades ago, would stop in and grab some decent barbecue for the trip home. Went through the line ordered a chopped beef sandwich and two sides, macaroni and cheese and coleslaw, with a medium fountain drink. The girl at the checkout counter told me that would be $20.03. They already had my order made so I was kind of under the gun to overpay for my lunch. The quality of my food was poor, even if I had only paid 10 bucks for it, but considering they were so proud they had to charge me 20 bucks, I was pretty upset with the lack of quality in the chopped brisket as well as the overcooked pasta in the macaroni and greasy cheese. The good news is it's pretty hard to screw up coleslaw, so I may have gotten my money's worth in the half a cup of coleslaw I was served for lunch. Sad to see this time honored restaurant in Fulshear go to hell. Don't know what happened to the old management, but I can tell you this I'll let all my contractor buddies know to blow this place off as it's a rip off now. I know there's inflation and stuff going on right now but I can go half a block down the street and eat at Pier 36 for less money at lunch and have a far superior quality meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good, customer service was excellent. The food is pretty good also. This place is nice and clean. You will get full. No matter what you order.

Yelp
We came after the change in ownership and pitmaster, and we were disappointed. The BBQ was great and now just so-so. The problem is the quality is inconsistent. I asked for a full rack of ribs and it came out to be about 1.8 lb, so the staff added a few ribs from another rack to make it 2 lb. The ribs from the full rack are tender and juicy, but the other few are dry and kinda burnt, they tasted bitter. The smokey flavor the ribs used to have is also missing. I wish they kept the old recipes. If you happen to live nearby or pass by, it's a good place to try out, but definitely not worth driving across the town for this.

Brie S.

Yelp
Stopped here after a long day at Blessington Farms and loved it! I'm usually not a BBQ fan - too greasy, too smokey, too much salt or pepper, but Doziers was excellent. The chicken was fall off the bone juicy and seasoned perfectly, and my kids demolished the ribs. Even the sides were excellent. We had greens, broccoli slaw, and beans. Again, usually not a fan of BBQ sides cause of the salt and grease, and reliance on bacon for flavor. These had none of that. Just fresh and tasty. I only wish we didn't live so far away, cause I want to come back for more! Just reading all the comments on the prices. I'm not sure how cheap the place used to be, but these prices are right in line with other BBQ I've had. In Houston and around the state. Lunch for four of us, with leftovers, including drinks was about $55.

Elia C.

Yelp
Portions have been reduced by 1/2 and prices have more than doubled. We used to go weekly but now do not plan on going back. Outrageously priced.
google avatar

William I.

Yelp
SO SO at best. Sides weren't tasty. BBQ sauce wasn't good, too much vinegar. Need 2 (at least) sauce formulas. Moist sliced beef was very good. Turkey was nothing special. My first visit to Dozier's was in 1969/70, 50 years ago. We used to have our beef and venison processed at Dozier's. In those early years BBQ wasn't as plentiful as today, so going to Dozier's for BBQ was special. I read in the Chronicle that Dozier's had changed hands and they had hired a new pit master. Overall, all 8 of us were somewhat disappointed.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Well worth the drive from NW HOUSTON. Everything we had was great. Ribs, briskets, greens, beans, both potato salad, and more. I love that you can buy beer and wine from the store and enjoy it with your meal. We bought 2 NY strips and thick bacon from the meat market. Very fresh and delicious.

James E.

Yelp
Traveled to Fulshear to determine if it was true that Dozier's was the 51st best BBQ in Texas. Excellent product. Best Brisket in Texas! Service makes you feel at home.

Shawn B.

Yelp
Update - new owners and the place is totally different. Used to be a good lunch spot where you could get a BBQ plate and a drink. It's all sold by the pound now and it's more expensive. The old staff is nice but the new guy that cuts the meat is kind of sour and rude. It's not worth the money. I'll just drive to Midway in Katy. Much better there.
google avatar

K K.

Yelp
New owners explain issues - tried it one more time yesterday, the rib plate and chopped beef sandwich just ok no wow factor. Ribs too tough for this TMJ victim. Quality is gone.
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Jesus Christ is Lord!!! These pork ribs are outstanding! Price is good. Nice general store. They also process wild game. Stop in if you're in the area. Baked potato is good too. Plenty of selection of drinks and snacks. Cold beer available.

Ted H.

Yelp
I've lived in Fulshear for 20 years. Could not tell you hoe many times I've eaten at Doziers. I'm am very happy with the changes. Is it perfect, no.....but they are on their way. the brisket is great, the ribs are great, the jalapeño cheese sausage is great, the broccoli slaw is excellent, the Mac and cheese is the real deal. Keep an eye out for specials, I had smoked filet with smoked Gouda grits and spicy collard greens, excellent. the Outdoor seating is a welcome addition. good for you Doziers. keep it up

Joanna M.

Yelp
Super moist brisket. Love their loaded potato salad. Every-time I pass I want to go and grab some.
google avatar

Evelyn T.

Yelp
I hate to review them because they were so nice, but I need to be honest in case somebody is thinking of driving out here. They were reviewed on the news thus morning I ng so I drove 50+ miles to check them out. The ribs were very salty, the chicken tough, the beef brisket and sausage were just OK. They should let me make the potato salad, it was bad. The green beans looked good but were nothing special.

Dustin T.

Yelp
Do not go here especially if you're going to have a deer processed, they have jacked up the prices and blatantly expressive when I ask why they just shrugged their shoulders with a blank stare on their face... I'll be honest this place used to be good, but all good things must come to an end save your money and go elsewhere there are plenty of other deer processing places.

Jerri W.

Yelp
Great food, big variety, good service. Just delicious. My favorite BBQ place now. The sauce is great too.
google avatar

Patrick N.

Yelp
Absolutely top notch barbecue to be found in this meat market/BBQ place. The store itself is cool, with meats and jerky available in addition to fabulous smoked meats. The brisket was wonderful and savory, the ribs were fabulous, the boudin was Louisiana quality and the jalapeño cheddar sausage terrific. And make sure to get that mustard to dip the sausage in. You won't regret it...
