The Cocktail Heatmap: Where to Drink Right Now in Portland

"The Northeast Portland century-old foursquare house that was once home to the laidback watering hole Beech Street Parlor is once again inhabited by a bar. At Dream House, Brighid King and Tony Lambright shake and stir cocktails like serrano-infused margaritas and hibiscus toddies, all in the $12 to $15 range. The Autumn Sweater infuses bourbon with peppercorns, pairing it with Bonal and honey simple for a sweet, earthy rainy weather drink. While you can perch on the house’s front patio or in the living room bar, cozier drinking nooks can be found in the house’s upstairs rooms — be sure to check the bar’s Instagram for the DJ schedule." - Janey Wong, Brooke Jackson-Glidden

17 Air-Conditioned Portland Restaurants and Bars to Beat the Heat

"While every pandemic era departure was a blow, some of the hardest to replace were the beloved neighborhood watering holes. In Portland, new exciting cuisine is always around the corner but a familiar, nurturing space with years of happy memories inherently takes time. Longtime patrons of Northeast Portland’s sadly departed Beech Street Parlor were thrilled to see the team behind Dream House bar grasping for Beech Street’s patented funky casual glory. After a brief iteration as a Spanish fine-dining spot, Dream House has restored the affordable cocktails and frequent DJ set model that made its predecessor so inviting. Settle into one of the cool nooks and crannies upstairs in this 115-year-old house with decidedly modern AC." - Nathan Williams

I am truly confused about how this bar has such high ratings. I’m actually so disappointed by our experience here that I need to leave a very detailed review of just how not good this place is. My friend and I like to try random places around town and have had this on our radar for a while because it seemed like everything we wanted from a Portland bar: pickles and fries, interesting cocktails, a cool old house, and a patio with vibes. But this is maybe the singlehanded most disappointing bar experience we’ve had in a very long time. The drinks were so watered down, the food was mid at best, and the vibes were just OFF. We had a burger and fries which were fine but not worth the money. We each had a “spicy”margarita which were so weak we wondered if we’d accidentally ordered them without any alcohol, and I had the special which was mostly flavorless tonic, and they had a Planeswalker which most impressively of all for a drink that was made entirely of alcohol, was somehow weaker than the rest. Which would be whatever they also didn’t taste so so boring. Most disappointing of all the vibes were just off the whole time. The bartender was nice but it felt like some insider hangout spot except all the insiders were the most mediocre and boring old white men you’ve ever met in your life. And we were sitting outside on the patio to enjoy the nice weather but one of the kitchen staff kept coming out to smoke right next to us every five minutes the whole time. I realize this review makes me sound like the most whiny Karen in Portland but I promise it’s not that. This bar is just that mediocre. I can name at least a dozen places of the top of my head that have better food and drinks for cheaper and have a more interesting, grungier/more truly Portland vibes instead of the manufactured vibe of whatever this place is. Stay far far away, please for the love dog.

Google
If I could give minus stars I would. Hands down worst bar in Portland. Went in with my mother on July 3rd around 9pmboth bar tenders pointedly would not engage - super biased feel in the air. There were only white patrons, there was really bad body odor going on in there, the place was so dark you could not see the menus and the customer service was non existent. My mother and I left without ordering anything because we don't patron businesses that don't like to serve to ALL OF THE NEIGHBORS - black, white or purple. We ended giving plenty of business to Lunch Box Social and we got good food, customer service, and odor free environment with a friendly vibe

Google
I love Dream House, but am begging… Can you bring back your kale Caesar salad? It was no joke, my favorite meal in the entire city. I dream about this salad. I tell everyone about this salad. I’ve brought people visiting Portland to Dream House for it. It’s the perfect meal. The asparagus salad is great, but the Caesar salad was life-altering. Thank you 🙏

The food is truly delicious. Put the blackened chicken on anything-so tender and well flavored. The cocktails are flavorful and stiff. One of our favorite hidden gems.

Google
Phenomenal food & drinks, fantastic service, and wonderful atmosphere! Loved the dark moody vibe, the spicy marg is actually spicy, the drinks are strong, pickles are great, and burger is possibly the best burger I've had in a couple years. Would love to come back! Also, definitely get the pickle fries if you visit.

Google
Excellent and consistent service by the staff. We go out of our way to stop by here whenever we can. Tonight (5/26) our bartender really went above and beyond to answer questions and make us great drinks. Thanks!!

Google
Very cool bar. It's inside of a beautiful old home with outdoor and upstairs seating. Really feels like a cool old style cocktail bar with a hip Portland twist. The drinks were great and made by an experienced bar tender. I did not eat so can't comment on the food.

Google
Amazing vibes here! Came by during a girls trip to Portland and we made some good memories here for sure. Really good spicy margs + pickles too!

Yelp
Love how cozy this bar is! Dim lights and vibezzz. To eat I ordered "Trivia tots" and they were great! To drink, I got the spicy margarita and an IPA. Super cozy, hip atmosphere both upstairs and down. My friend and I hung out at the bar since trivia was going on upstairs and we just wanted to chit chat. I would definitely come back next time I'm in the area looking for a quick stopover!

Good ambiance. Great food. Awesome location. Definitely recommend both to Portland natives and to those exploring unique drinking and dining experiences.

Yelp
Portland's old homes can make fine hangouts where each room has its vibe for the community in the moment. This small house has a lovely front porch, the main floor with tables, the bar, and able kitchen, and a few rooms upstairs with a DJ nook and a variety of seating arrangements. Dream House is what was Beech Street Parlor. They have some specialty cocktails, wine, and beer. The menu is divided into small plates and big plates. I had the vegan meatballs small plate. It was a stiff, guessing soy, meatball, a complex marinara, and a nut- or seed-based sweet red pepper-miso sauce which was very tasty as garnish. I need to experiment with that sauce at home! On my visit, I chatted with the founders who were working, and found them friendly and happy to tell the story of the space. The old business has been missed; the new business is starting nightly DJs. They are starting up with a lot of community cred.

Yelp
Cool, dark, inviting. The adjectives are plentiful. Seems to bridge the line between being both intimate for a couple, but fun for a group of friends. Good tunes being played. Large outdoor porch in front that was popular. Smokers in one area when we walked up, plus the inside was too cool so we decided to stay inside. Rotating beers on tap, decent sized food menu with snacks and what looked like larger plates for a meal. One dessert listed- pie (was cookie our night- delicious). All reasonably priced. I had a Paloma and a Hibiscus Daiquiri. My Paloma was missing a richer flavor. We make them with fresh grapefruit juice and I really like that flavor. Daiquiri was better. IPAs on tap were decent-Living Haus and a hazy one I can't recall. Not as hazy as we like 'em so hope they switch out for a different one. Overall we're excited to see this place in our neighborhood and are planning to head back for sure.

Yelp
Phenomenal food being put out in this very Portland little bar. Live music upstairs, a well stocked bar with great cocktails. This place is perfect for a date night!

Yelp
Cute spot with different levels of cozy intimate spaces throughout the house and outside for seating. DJs most nights. Good food with frequent rotation, including hand pies. Drinks are also good with less rotation on the cocktail menu.

Yelp
All the food is incredible - just had a bread pudding that is fluffier and better than every other bread pudding I've ever had (Moon and Sixpence has my previous favorite but this wins hands down). Highly recommend this spot esp if you're looking to eat

Yelp
Truly an excellent bar. There is practically nothing bad to say about the place; the space is lovely, the cocktails are quality, the food is quality and an excellent value (perhaps the best value in all of Portland). The service is excellent, staff are all friendly and efficient. I go here for the food alone even, and simply to sit out on the beautiful patio and read. There's no other bar that offers all this place offers that I know of in Portland. It's a bar that is happening but also chill, it has the versatility of being able to do both.

Yelp
Awesome vibes, feels like a well kept secret. Extensive cocktail list and a full menu at reasonable prices, in 2023 that's really saying something. The staff are super friendly. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Just went last night and must go back soon! I had one of their speciality cocktails, it was a Paloma but with Mezcal added. My friend and I absolutely devoured their loaded pickle fries. I could seriously eat another plate of them next time! They had all the windows open letting the breeze float through on a night warm evening. And all their little tables gave it such a nice little vibe. We sat outside on their little side patio. The large amount of smoking on the front porch kept blowing over to us...and that was annoying. Kind of wish they'd make only one part of the patio a smoking section.

Yelp
Disappointed. This once neighborhood speak easy, feel's off putting by the pretentious staff. The smoking section outside the front door lingers throughout the inside. Will not be returning.

A H.

Yelp
No heater for outside patio. No discernible pickles in pickle fries? Relish does not a pickle fry make. Menu on their website was not available, why not update it? Speakers so unbearably loud downstairs, just turned down a bit would make eating there so much more bearable. Ice berg salad had so much goddamn bacon (will everyone put down the bacon plz) and a sour cream tasting dressing vs a true ranch which is more a matter of taste.

Yelp
We are so happy this location has re-opened as a neighborhood bar. The suprise is the excellent natural wine selection and imaginative cocktail menu featuring homemade syrups and infusions! The food is elevated pub fare with seasonal local ingredients. Atmosphere is cozy and low lit. Staff (owner opperated!) Are welcoming and knowledgeable. Kids allowed until 8 and there are yummy non alcoholic drinks!

Yelp
The burger is incredible. The cocktails are delicious and the service is fast. Amazing atmosphere with live DJ's upstairs and a mellow candlelit vibe in the main restaurant. This place really impressed me and I can't wait to go back.

Zak J.

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere and decent prices ($6 for a small Modelo and a well shot ain't bad). Definite improvement on previous owners. This place is really coming into its own.

Yelp
Replaced the much loved Beech Street Parlor. New owners are close friends of the old Beech Street and maintains all the same charm and vibe. Great food menu, and one of the best priced bars in Portland.
