Best Restaurants in Philadelphia for Affordable Food | Eater Philly

"University City has been a haven for college students and diners alike who want a great deal while eating out. Em Ơi Vietnamese Cafe (formerly NAM Vietnamese Kitchen) is serving up a $18 pho lunch special (that includes pho, a spring roll, and drink). Ordered a la carte, all of their bánh mì and pho options are remarkably under $16." - Eater Staff

Google
An awesome little Vietnamese coffee shop with delicious and creative drinks. I particularly enjoyed the coconut matcha but everything was good. The inside was fairly quiet, but inviting. They have free wifi, people are using laptops to work. The food looked great!

I’m a coffee-over-matcha person any day, but this place’s strawberry matcha changed my mind. It’s creamy, a little earthy and just sweet enough; I genuinely loved it. I also tried the Drippy, which is absolutely a must-get; it's bold, rich, and on the stronger side (in a great way), so sip accordingly. I loved the vibe of the place and how unique the menu was! It's an aesthetic, bright space that’s easy to linger in, although it does fill up quickly, so arrive a bit early if you want a seat!

The vibe here was cute! They decorated their interior to have some Vietnamese vibe while still having a modern look to it. They also had some free stickers with their logo, if people are interested. We got the Banana Latte and Pandan Lover. Both drinks tasted delicious! I personally liked the Pandan Lover because it tastes like real Pandan and it wasn’t too sweet. Be aware that there is a 3% fee for using credit card. I ended up using cash to pay.

I enjoyed my time here and the Matcha was good. But this place can get cramped a little fast. There is good seating options but you have to get it while you can. When I went there was like a lot of school kids so maybe that’s why I felt like that. Presentation was a 10/10 and the staff was nice.

I kept hearing about this cafe all over TikTok and I am so glad I went. It’s definitely small and gets very packed during the weekend so sitting inside isn’t really plausible. There is seating on the outside tho! I had the coconut matcha and it was definitely one of the best matchas I’ve ever had!

I stopped by Drip for a banana latte with matcha foam. Since the menu emphasized “banana milk,” I thought it was the natural banana milk bought at the market or see at other cafés with quality ingredients similar to oat or coconut milk. Instead, it was not a banana milk but regular milk they pumped with a bunch of artificial laffy taffy tasting banana syrup pumped in. But that’s not the issue . The issue is when I went back to inquire since I made the assumption this was actual banana milk, the staff member told me that “you CAN’T milk a banana” and insisted ALL banana milk in general is DAIRY. I found that response unnecessarily dismissive since I clearly said I buy plant based banana milk (pictured) and have had it at other cafes. Instead of just saying they don’t have that she assumed banana milk in general is just the artificial one she grew up on. Just because something is UNFAMILIAR to her doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist especially since plant-based banana milk is widely available in stores and used in many cafés. A little curiosity and willingness to listen would have made the interaction much more pleasant instead . Just like If I asked for a coconut latte, instead of just pumping coconut syrup and adding whole milk an establishment may clarify if I meant coconut milk ? They did remake the drink with oat milk, which I appreciated, but the flavor remained quite artificial and overly sweet. Overall, Drip offers creative drinks but relies heavily on syrups like a a Dunkin or Starbucks rather than natural ingredients like some other coffee shops . If you value quality, and thoughtful customer service, this may not be the right fit.

Google
This Vietnamese coffee shop is a must-try if you're looking for a good pick me up! When I went, it was a lot busier than I expected, but the wait wasn't very long. They do have some seating and tables here, but it isn't much and mostly for grab-and-go. We tried their ube, ube & pandan, and vanilla coffees and they were all delicious. My issue with Vietnamese coffee is that sometimes it's too strong and makes my stomach hurt, however, this was okay!! Moreover, their foams were creamy and full of flavor. Loved it and would definitely come back.

Google
I absolutely love their cookies and the fact that it isn’t too sweet. They have a variety of specialty flavors. I got the lemonade, that was a little on the sweeter side but nonetheless, still good. I’m already thinking of the next cookie flavor. I want to try out. 😋

Yelp
Really enjoyed this spot. Fairly new place I stumbled upon visiting Philly. Coffee a bit expensive but it was great. Would definitely stop by again if I lived in area as an occasional treat. Ube Coffee was great, also tried my friends Pandan Coffee. I've never been to an Asian Coffee shop that was able to make an Ube/Pandan coffee/late where the coffee didn't just overpower the taste. I could seriously taste the Ube still. Ube was definitely better, stronger flavor than Pandam, was able to really taste the Ube in the coffee. Some seating inside. Staff was kind. Hopefully they have some hot drinks available soon for the winter! Would recommend 5/5.

Yelp
Came here on grand opening, was a long wait but that's to be expected with their free drinks for the first handful. It was a lively start and was very impressed by the strong Vietnamese coffee! Wonderful taste with the foam too. Was slightly disappointed I couldn't adjust the ice or sweetness because I cant handle too much sugar from the condensed milk. I decided to come back several times again anyway but soon noticed along with my friends that the strong viet coffee was more diluted compared to grand opening day. Initially I thought it was in my head but more friends began to notice the difference. Hopefully they can ensure more consistency in the future!

Yelp
A small, Vietnamese cafe serving up coffee and food in Philly's Chinatown. Easy walking distance from the 8th/Market PATCO, Convention Center, and Reading Terminal Market. A few tables available with a large drink menu focusing on coffee along with some food. Coffee is on the pricier side at $7, but the drink is pretty large. Viet coffee is not too sweet and super strong. The ube cream was amazing, and I definitely want to try the pandan the next time. Quick and friendly service; please support this Vietnamese business!

Yelp
I love Vietnamese coffee so I was happy to find this place in Philly! There are a few tables inside, and there's wifi and a bathroom so it's a nice place to get work done. They have fun drinks, as well as pastries and a selection of banh mis which looked good but I didn't try them. I got the pandan coffee - the cream had a distinct pandan flavor and the coffee was sweet (from the condensed milk) and strong. If I'm ever back I'd love to try the ube coffee!

Yelp
Ordered the "drippy" and I enjoyed every drop of it. Lol. It wasn't bitter and the salted foam balanced well with the coffee. The cafe has limited seating but enough for a quick hang out. Service was also quick, efficient and friendly. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Pandan was so velvety, rich, and creamy. It was my first time having Pandan and it was so good. Service was fast and the vibes in the restaurant were chill. They have cute and comfy seating areas with R&B playing.

Yelp
LOVE the drinks I'm so excited to go back. I love the options. The got season items as well. It's quick and delicious. There's plenty of seats to sit and chit chat too. Super casual spot

Yelp
Really great Vietnamese coffee place in Chinatown! We got the drippy without grass jelly (same price) and iced pumpkin spice (special). Drinks had a very strong coffee flavor with delicious flavored thick cold foam on the top. The pumpkin drink even came with a small cookie. The Drippy was definitely our favorite because the salted cold foam was to die for! Coffees were a little pricey at $7-8 per drink, but the taste was worth it! Will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Came for the chicken Bahn Mi sandwich and it didn't disappoint. It was warm with generous amounts of chicken and full of flavor. The only disappointment is that the menu is so heavily drink focused with pictures that it's easy to miss the Bahn Mi section. I had to ask about Bahn Mi because I honestly didn't even notice the section on the menu, perhaps update the menu to additionally highlight the sandwich's.

Yelp
A little small coffee shop in the corner of Chinatown, that has delicious and strong Vietnamese coffee! My sister order the pandan, hubby order the ube and I got the drippy ! The drippy coffee included the coffee jelly and sea salt foam. The sea salt foam wasn't too salty and the coffee was very strong. Even when the ice melted the coffee didn't taste water down. The coffee jelly was a very good combination.

Yelp
Great coffee spot for a strong Vietnamese coffee! Extremely pricey though. I ordered a Pandan Coffee which was $8 (after additional charges). There's a 3% surcharge for card transactions. I like that even though there was pandan flavoring/foam top, it still wasn't too sweet. There's wifi available and a few small tables for seating inside.

Yelp
Walked into a spacious nice ambiance with a mix of modern and Viet decor. Nice that ube is on the menu but the coffee tasted a bit like dark chocolate and burnt. I did get the last order of ube foam coffee of the day and I did walk in about 4:45pm so did I get the bottom of the batch of coffee? I'm not sure or Maybe my taste buds are a bit wack? I do like that they announce that there is a 3% service charge if you use card instead of cash so ur not charged surprisingly.

Yelp
The staff is super friendly and helpful. The ambiance is beautiful! All white with patrons on laptops ... a cool place to hang out or get to go. I had the coconut matcha and it was fresh delicious and large for the price! The staff says " Stay Drippy!!" As you exit the cafe. All in all a great little neighborhood cafe.

Yelp
I'm finally back in Philly after a year gone and I'm so excited to see all the new places that have opened up! After finding out that a new coffee shop was opening in Chinatown I knew I had to go! I think it's a nice addition to the area since there aren't that many coffee places. However, as a student I will say the prices were a bit high for my budget. I tried the chicken bahn mi which tasted great but portion wise was on the smaller side. As for the drinks, I tried the vanilla coffee, pandan, and soy milk. They were all definitely on the sweeter side and since the coffee is premade, you can't change the sweetness level which can be disappointing. I'm not sure if I would go back, mainly cause of prices but we'll see!

Yelp
Drip Viet Cafe is a cute store and was very quiet when we went in on a Sunday morning. Their Vietnamese iced coffee is very strong and has a nutty flavor. It definitely wakes you up which is great for early mornings. We ordered an Ube crinkle cookie and a banh mi with the cold cuts and asked for no jalapenos because we can't handle spicy things. The banh mi came out after 5-10 minutes and I was a little disappointed that the bread wasn't warm. It had a decent crunch but there was nothing special about the banh mi. The cookie was fine and has a slight sweet potato flavor. Overall I'd come back to try other coffee based drinks.

Yelp
Came here on grand opening day which really was our first mistake. We first arrived at 11 and they said they were not taking any more orders until after 12 for their dragon dance, which we returned for, but it wasn't until about 12:15 that we were allowed to order. We ordered the Ube and pandan drinks, and ended up having to wait almost 45 minutes for our drink and ultimately, one of the servers handed our ube drink to someone else without asking for the order number. It was at this point that they said they were stopping all coffee drinks, so we were left scratching our heads as we did not pay and wait 45 minutes to not get our drink. Thankfully they remade the drink, but since it was the bottom of the barrel coffee, it was extremely bitter and grainy- definitely not a vibe. The pandan drink was a little better although truthfully, I expected a stronger coffee flavor considering its Vietnamese coffee and for both drinks, the ube and pandan flavors were barely present. I think the potential is definitely there, and maybe if we returned later, our experience would be better, but for this time, pretty disappointed.

Yelp
Their Pandan Vietnamese Iced Coffee is sooo good! The sweetness from the pandan foam balances out the strong coffee flavor and just pairs very well together. Definitely worth trying if you're a fan of pandan

Daniel C.

Yelp
Ube foam was amazing, pairs very well with the coffee. Staff was great and let us sample banana foam!

Yelp
There are so many drink places in Chinatown that you really have to stick out. I'm not a coffee person, so I can't speak on that. I did try one of their lemonade drinks and it was a bit too sweet (some other friends have also said they got the other drinks that weren't coffee and it was too sweet as well.) The special banh mi wasn't bad, but it's overly priced ($11-$12, average of other places is around $9) for what you get. I haven't tried any of their other banh mi. Overall, this place is okay. I spent $23 for a drink and a banh mi, could have had a whole meal at one of the local restaurants (there's a 3% charge to use a card payment.)
