The rice is what knocks Drunken Dragon down to only 4.5 stars. There, I had to get that out of the way because otherwise our dinner was perfect!
I'd heard about Drunken Dragon and it's speakeasy vibe - for awhile the entry sign just read "market" - and brought a friend here for her birthday. Surprisingly enough, I got there a little bit ahead, and the hostess was kind enough to hold our reservation until the birthday girl arrived. I sat at the bar and started off with their Seoul Surfer - rum (of course) and a side of Berkshire Pork belly gyoza. Served with a tiki umbrella, flavored with passion fruit, elderflower, lime, hibiscus and a balanced splash of rum my cocktail was perfect as an apertif. The sweet taste of the mixes balanced the spicy gyoza sauce and the pork belly with the right amount of salt & hearty. The noodles had a good texture as well, not falling apart when using chopsticks.
The vibe is classy / romantic with dim lighting, sexy r&b, wood paneling & somewhat erotic art. It is very much a date night or special occasion kind of place.
When my friend arrived, the hostess took us promptly to our table. Our waitress recommended their "Battered Twice Fried Fried Chicken". I skipped the ranch sauce and enhanced my perfectly crispy chicken wings (decently sized!) with their red dragon hot sauce. I even used some of the sauce to try and spice up the chicken fried rice. Our waitress did suggest to try the stone pot rice next time.
Besides the Seoul surfer, I enjoyed a strong, mildly sweet and well flavored rum old fashioned. My friend and I also shared their cold sake.
Since it was her birthday, I mentioned as much on the reservation and she was serenaded & served Mochi ice cream with a candle and all. My favorite one of those was the strawberry.
