The Coffee Shops Around D.C., According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"Downtown’s local and woman-owned Indonesian coffee shop has a devoted downtown following. Along with coffee and tea, signature drinks include a tonic and a bottled matcha with mango. There are fluffy toasts that bring milk bread to mind, and a crispy spring roll stuffed with banana and melted chocolate." - Tierney Plumb

The 8 Best Coffee Shops In DC

"Dua DC isn't just the first Indonesian coffee shop in the city, it also brews some really great coffee. Don't let the shoulder-to-shoulder line stretching from the register to the door stop you from making a morning pitstop on your way to work. Their lattes sweetened with condensed milk and classic cardamom-infused dirty chais are worth the 15 minute wait (and glares from your boss)." - tristiana hinton

Dua DC - Review - Downtown - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Dua DC isn't just the first Indonesian specialty coffee shop in the city, it also brews some really great coffee. There’s often a shoulder- to-shoulder line stretching from the register to the door, but don’t let that stop you from making a morning pitstop on your way to work. Their lattes sweetened with condensed milk and classic cardamom-infused dirty chais are worth the 15 minute wait, and glares from your boss. If coffee isn't your thing, their iced matcha is the best we've had in the city, and comes with cuts of mango that surprisingly go really well with matcha." - Omnia Saed

DUA Coffee DC is a charming and cozy café nestled in the heart of Washington, D.C. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for a quiet morning coffee or a casual catch-up with a friend. Their latte is smooth and beautifully crafted with artistic foam that shows attention to detail. The pastry—flaky, buttery, and perfectly baked—pairs wonderfully with their coffee selection. One standout aspect of this café is the quality and consistency of both the drinks and the pastries. You can tell they care about what they serve. The staff is friendly, and the space is aesthetically pleasing with its minimalist wooden design. The only drawback is the limited seating, which might make it difficult to find a spot during busy hours. Still, it’s a hidden gem worth visiting if you’re in the area.

Google
One of the best coffeeshops I’ve been to. These folks are meticulous and specialize in roasting and brewing Indonesian coffee beans. I believe there were no other beans used at this location when I visited but I might be wrong. I should add that this might be the best Indonesian coffee I’ve tried. The place is cozy and minimally designed. Great for a date, a work from cafe day, or on top of all enjoying an excellent cup of coffee — which is the main reason why local coffeeshops exist, right? I’d become a regular if I lived in the area!

Loved discovering a halal café in DC! We had a smooth latte and delicious beef empanadas—perfect comfort food on a chilly day.

Google
KOPI SUSU latte a 5⭐️ Must try!! Indonesian-styled latte with condensed milk. The right balance of coffee with a smooth, milky consistency and a hint of sweetness.

Google
We ordered two great pour overs and a bakwan. Coffee was great, but maybe a tad over extracted for my liking. Medium light roast. The bakwan was tasty as well, but very greasy as you would expect for a friend snack. Taste notes for the frinsa: lemongrass and lime, then followed by baking spice. Taste notes for the wanoja: sweet rum, lemonade, and baking spices again.

Google
Coffee shop near the White House with Indonesian foods and drinks. Decor: warm wood with white tile kitchen. Service: Friendly and prompt. A little slow to receive a latte. Had the condensed milk coffee, not as strong as I expected. $5-6 for double shot latte. 12 oz only has one shot, 16 oz has a double. Has pour over available. Overall: cute coffee place, wished coffee was stronger.

Google
This is a cute coffee shop in the heart of DC. It has a unique vibe to it with a zen feel as soon as you walk in. The art work in there is beautiful. I can tell the attention to detail was a huge priority. It is a small shop so seating was limited but we waited patiently until someone got up. We did ask to dine in but were given to go cups. I didn’t appreciate that but I did enjoy the pumpkin spice latte and pumpkin croissant. They were both delicious. All types of milk and alternatives were available so that was a plus. Overall I would come back again and I wouldn’t deter anyone from checking this place out. I left feeling like, “that was cute”. So job well done Dua.

Google
I went out of my way to come here, but I don’t think that was necessary. The standard coffee was decent, whereas I personally didn’t love the flavors of the drip coffee I got. I can imagine it’s a nice place to stop by and work in as a local. As someone who was just visiting the area, it would’ve been nice to know I didn’t need to schedule for it specifically.

Yelp
It's a local's favorite and worth the wait! Cozy, warm-tone space with a lot of traditional Indonesian decor. The menu was interesting and the coffee was great. We went right after an Indonesian barista won the WBC and were impressed by the Indonesian coffee here. Normally I am not an Indonesian coffee fan as it tasted a bit too earthy or herby to me. But here, wow, they did a great job in introducing Indonesian coffee at different roasting levels and from different farms, and creating yummy drinks out of them. The lattes are nicely done even when they are so busy - I absolutely love that attitude! We highly recommend this place - probably the most interesting one to check out in DC.

Yelp
I've been here twice and will definitely be back! Haven't tried their food but have heard good things. I tried their mint mocha with almond milk and enjoyed it. Baristas are nice and you get a discount the first time you make an order through the app. Limited seating but good layout and some outlets available. Attached some screenshots from the app - love that they have descriptions of each item and make it easy to customize your order. I was to try the kopi susu and oat pandan cold brew next!

Yelp
Absolutely adorable space with a fantastic drink and snack selection! I was super excited to find a DC coffee shop highlighting Southeast Asian flavors, and Dua's signature drinks, including their klafee and kopi susu, certainly didn't disappoint. My only note is that everything is pretty sweet, and there aren't many options to reduce the sugar level -- their matcha mango, for example, is delicious and super refreshing on a hot summer day, but is pretty sweet. They also have a number of tasty snacks, including empanadas, scones, croissants, and their iconic toasts. If you manage to swing by before they run out, I highly recommend their sunflower banana toast -- the milk bread is soft and pillowy, and it's the perfect vessel for the nutty sunbutter, lightly sweet banana, and the light drizzle of honey. Whether you're dropping by for a quick to-go cup of joe or want to settle in to work / read / chat for a few hours, Dua is one of DC's must-try coffee shops. Not only will you be treated with a bunch of tasty drinks / snacks, but the ambiance is also wonderful, with a light buzz of conversation and upbeat music, and a ton of natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the shopfront. The staff is incredibly kind and willing to answer any questions / allow you to sample a variety of drinks if you're feeling indecisive. Truly can't recommend Dua enough!

Yelp
This cute coffee shop has a laid-back atmosphere and great tunes. I ordered the peach iced tea, which was refreshing and not too sweet. I skipped the food since nothing on the menu caught my eye. The small dimly lit seating area in the back is ideal for focused work. The waiting area features a bench and a cozy two-seat nook with a coffee table and a selection of magazines, giving off a functional living room vibe. There's also outdoor seating available. Overall, it's a nice, centrally located spot to grab a cup of coffee or tea.

Yelp
Dua has been on my list!!!! Finally last week while taking family from Philippines around DC, we decided to check them out. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! We got the pandan cold brew, kopi susu, mint hot chocolate and cappuccino. My favorite is the pandan cold brew! It is such a unique flavor and who would've thought pandan will go so well with coffee???? Staff are friendly and attentive! There was a line when we went but it moved fast. They have clean restrooms and tables to sit. Lovely cafe! We will definitely be back and excited to try new concoction they will come up with!

Yelp
Dua DC is located right by the McPherson metro station. It's a fairly small cafe with limited seating in the back and bright and clean inside. The register is right when you walk in the door and the employees are really nice. The menu has a lot of unique options since it's Indonesian coffee and has a little explanation for each of the different blends. I ordered the oat pandan cold brew, which now might be my favorite coffee-based drink. I like the flavor of pandan, but if you're unfamiliar with it, it isn't too strong in this drink, and it adds a nice sweetness and nuttiness. It's a delightful drink that doesn't have the bite of a normal cold brew, it more so feels like a latte. I would recommend this drink even if you're not too into coffee!

Yelp
I'm gonna start at the top--the coffee here is phenomenal. The food is also fantastic. I had a Kopi Susi latte and it's the epitome of a perfectly crafted well balanced latte--you can taste the roast with a perfect hint sweetness. Highly recommend! The banana/almond butter toast was a perfect snack and not overly sweet. The bread was toasted but also pillowy and soft and chewy. Delightful! The service was friendly and quick. The seating is the most challenging aspect. There are several double seats unfortunately all taken by single guests. There are long benches that can seat longer parties, but this obviously makes for awkwardness if you want to converse. The playlist was an impeccable mix of yacht rock/light rock. Overall, this place is one of my new favorites in the DC area!

Yelp
The service is prompt and the coffee ... ah so good! The almond croissant are amazing! Must try!

Yelp
Some of the best coffee I've had in DC! I've never had Indonesian coffee before but now that I have, I can say that I love it. I got the kopi susu which was the perfect amount of sweetness for me. I also got an empanada which hit the spot. Overall ambiance was good as well. I came to get some work done and luckily they have a decent amount of seating. However, the shop itself gets quite busy on weekends and a lot of people are coming to chat, so definitely bring some noise-reducing headphones if you want to get work done.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing latte! It's a cup of strong caffeine with oat milk... it's a good price for a strong latte unlike other coffee shops with weak latte drinks. I'd come here again to try pastries! The service was awesome as they switched to other barista who knows sign language! Win for accessible! Don't let long line haunt you... they goes fairly quick so... come with patience! The vibe in the shop is very chill and artsy but very welcoming!

Yelp
I love it! It was one of 2 coffee shops that I had already bookmarked before arriving at DCA. It was just too unique to pass up. There aren't any coffee shops in my area that specialize in Indonesian coffee. This was going to be a treat. We were greeted by an indoor mural called "Kamboja Prayer" by Miss Chelove. She's a well-known local artist. Perhaps you've seen her murals around the DC area. I really like how the opened hand greets you when you walk in, but also has the same affect when you're leaving the coffee shop from the other side of it. It's a calming mural with the background of coffee leaves and berries. A very nice touch. We hit this spot at a good time. There was no line. We selected a few items from the menu. I just had to get the oat pandan cold brew, while my husband selected the iced mocha latte. They were both refreshing and delicious. We also received 2 beef empanadas and a pischok (or pisang coklat). The beef empanadas were very tasty. It reminded me of pastelitos de carne, only in a baked empanada form. They have a cheese & onion empanada as well. The banana chocolate pischok had a good flavor, but the wrapper wasn't crispy. I think it's supposed to have a crispy texture like lumpia or banana coins. But, I understand that they probably don't fry them up at this location. It was still good. It just would have been been better if it was crispy. All in all, it was a great visit. There are tables inside and outside. There are also hidden nooks with lounge seating as you walk towards the back of the shop. I did see a continuous bench along the wall, as well as a little bar seating area in front of where you place your order. It's a great place for coffee, tea, or a light snack. We would definitely return any time we're in the vicinity of McPherson Square. A pour over of the Wanoja Natural or a Kopi Kedua will be on my list for next time.

Yelp
I love trying local coffee shops when I travel. Dua has a great story and vibe!! There were no tables available in the small space but we were happy to sit on a bench to enjoy our drinks. Since it was right before our dinner reservations I got Hibiscus tea. It was extremely balanced and delicious. I bought a bag of Aceh Gayo coffee bean that I can't wait to enjoy when I get home.

Yelp
I walked 40 minutes to try Dua DC's matcha latte as I read that it was the best matcha latte in Washington DC! Arriving there I was surprised to see how small it was inside (very limited seating), and it's very dimly lit, which I'm not sure I liked. However, the matcha latte was pretty decent. The matcha flavor could have been stronger, but I liked the addition of condensed milk in the latte as it made the drink very creamy. I don't think it was really worth the 40 minute walk, and it's certainly not the best matcha latte I've ever had, but it was definitely better than most of the matcha lattes in the area! I would definitely pop in again if I was nearby, but I would not go out of my way to go here.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
My latte was incredible and my matcha-loving friend was very pleased. I love the service here, but be advised, if you're like me and don't like sweetened drinks, this matcha is pre-sweetened. It's very small and gets loud and crowded easily, so if you're looking to work, step outside. There's a beautiful park right across the street.
google avatar

Joanie S.

Yelp
Awful latte. I came here based off the good reviews and it was one of the worst coffees I've ever had. It tasted syrupy and like something I would expect to get from a college campus. 0/10 and sad I wasted my money on it.
google avatar

Meaghan G.

Yelp
I got the Mango Matcha and asked for less ice. The matcha itself was good but the sweetener is condensed milk which made it slightly too sweet. The mangoes were a nice touch. Even though I asked for less ice, there was a ton of ice in my cup
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
This is my favorite coffee shop in DC! They have snacks and many fun coffee options. I recently had a matcha latte with mango in it and it was delicious. They have 4 tables for 2 outside and limited seating inside. This place is always busy, even if you come at 4pm.
google avatar

Regan T.

Yelp
Super cozy Indonesian coffeeshop! I love how they have specialty drinks like the pandan cold brew, mango matcha, and kopi kedua (condensed milk latte). The owner and employees are super warm and friendly. I tried the brown latte and it was delicious with great latte art. It has kind of a toasty brown sugar taste and it wasn't too sweet at full sweetness. I also got a cheese and onion empanada which they serve all day. It was warmed up nicely with a buttery flaky crust and a flavorful filling. The back area has a few intimate tables but they seem to turn over pretty quickly--though it might get busier during peak hours. Overall I love the decor and menu of this place!
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
I've had this spot on my list for a while, and I'm so glad to have tried it! The kopi susu (coffee with condensed milk) was so smooth - sweet but not too sweet. I tried a friend's pumpkin latte and that was lovely and well-spiced. I definitely want to come back and try their pour over! I also got the rendang toast. It was a generous portion and really filling and warming on a gloomy day. I will say that it wasn't as flavorful as other rendang I've had before - it was a little on the bland side - but I still enjoyed it overall. Curious to try more coffee and their pastries next time! It's small and there's very little seating, so I'd say it's better to get your drink to go or come during off hours - I was here on the weekend and it was packed! They got orders put pretty quickly despite the crowd, though, and everyone was welcoming.
google avatar

Melody Y.

Yelp
There isn't much seating but the cafe ambiance is nice for meeting up with friends/studying Kopi Susu: Indonesian coffee with condensed milk. Perfect amount of sweetness with the deep flavors of the Indonesian beans. Mocha mint: a little too sweet but chocolaty and smooth.
google avatar

Jenna L.

Yelp
A local Indonesian and woman-owned coffee shop that uses single-origin beans from various islands in Indonesia, you can't go wrong with any of their menu selections! The Kopi Susu is my personal favorite -- smooth and creamy espresso lightly sweetened with condensed milk, it's perfect every time. The Brown Latte is a latte with organic coconut palm sugar (made in house), and this is also a very smooth drink with more of a bolder coffee flavor. The interior has an industrial + chill and cozy vibe with a relaxing atmosphere, seating is somewhat limited but there are also tables + chairs outdoor as well, which is perfect as the weather gets warmer. I love introducing all my friends to this coffee shop and they've all loved it!
google avatar

Kristely N.

Yelp
Small location but cute spot to work from. Staff are so kind. I had the most amazing oat pandan coffee of my life. I first had a taste at one of the embassy days and had to find them!!
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
Dua DC has such an unique concept. I can't recall the last time I had a kopi kedua although I've had different versions of condensed milk lattes from other Asian countries (Malaysia, etc.). One thing I like about Dua's kopi kedua is that it isn't too strong, very light in flavor and sweet. I admit, I personally like sweet drinks so I was a fan. I bought a bag of their beans before for S and he said it was a unique drinking experience because coffee beans from Indonesia are not as widely sold as say, beans from Columbia or Ethiopia. Dua is also a short walking distance from the subway. I personally like strolling with an iced Kopi southwards because the neighborhood is so beautiful, especially in later summer/ early fall.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way to pick up lunch-needed coffee. Located next to a small Park, I was able to find street parking pretty quickly across the street. A smaller, cozy set-up with a narrow walk to the Tables in the back. Some stool seating in front with a view of the Park and outdoor seating. A good selection of Coffee/Teas with Bagels, Empanadas & baked items. (from an external Baker). That said, more about the Beverages here. Ordered a Mocha and the Premium Chocolate lived up to the billing-bold espresso and nicely balanced with the milk and chocolate.-Enjoyed it! Display case right in front worked. Was curious about the Kouign Amann. French pastry described as the denser version of a Croissant-Tasty and the Chocolate Chip Scone was loaded with Chocolate Chips-as it should be-delicious! Service was friendly and helpful. Overall, solid Coffee spot with Beans and Mugs for sale onsite. Worth the stop.
google avatar

Candace H.

Yelp
If you're looking for cà phê sữa nóng, this isn't the place. They have Indonesian coffee and that might work for some of you, but if you live in California and have been drinking the real thing, this won't cut it. However, if you have nothing else to compare it to, you will be pleased. It's a beautiful space, staff are friendly and helpful, the coffee isn't too expensive and it's also pretty good, and it's a unique concept that doesn't exist in DC.
google avatar

Parisa A.

Yelp
I was craving for a cold brew but came out with matcha instead! It was my first time trying matcha and it had the right amount of sweetness. It was super refreshing!
google avatar

Orest S.

Yelp
Another beautiful and cosy coffee shop at 15th street Northwest. Always packed during the weekend mornings. Nice tiny tables and great coffee. Check-in at Yelp! to get a free drink.
google avatar

Vi T.

Yelp
Solid spot for a cup of Indonesian coffee from a minority-owned business in downtown DC. There's also a couple of Indonesian snacks available to order to pair with your drink, as well as other typical pastry offerings (croissants), and even some empanada choices. Wifi is available, with some table seating in the back for patrons to work on their laptops. There's also some window bar stool seating at their front window and outdoor patio seats to enjoy the view of Mcpherson Square park, which is right across the street.
google avatar

Aubree W.

Yelp
I walked here from the Washington Monument. I arrived right at 9AM on a Sunday in late August and I was second in line. I ordered a large (12oz) hot matcha latte and a croissant filled with chocolate. This was an amazing matcha. As soon as I finished it, I wished I had another one to drink. It was creamy and it had a delicious sweetness to it that wasn't overly sweet. I also used the restroom while I was here. You have to ask for the door code but the restroom smelt very clean upon entry and the toilet tissue was so soft. I will be back the next time I am in the area
google avatar

Oscar L.

Yelp
Dua is probably my favorite coffee shop in DC serving Javanese coffee. The mural inside is also done by a wonderful and talented DMV artist Miss Chelove. It can get busy inside so seating may sometimes be a challenge, but well worth the visit.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
Came by Dua for a quick afternoon pick me up. It was a hot day, and I just needed the caffeine to get me through. They have so many good options. I ended up trying the oat pandan cold brew. I loved that it was automatically oat milk without an extra charge. The coffee was great. It wasn't a overtly strong pandan flavor which I appreciated because it didn't completely hide the coffee taste. It wasn't overly sweet either. Such a solid coffee spot. I highly recommend if you love Asian flavors and good coffee.
google avatar

Stella Y.

Yelp
Came here after walking to the White House and got the lychee black tea. I expected it to be unsweetened but was pleasantly surprised that it was a bit sweet, but not overly. I liked that i could taste the tea and the lychee flavor as well as sometimes the tea is diluted. They also added a whole lychee piece inside the drink and it did not taste artificial at all. Overall a super refreshing drink on a hot day.
google avatar

Allie H.

Yelp
The only thing disappointing about this coffee shop is how long I went without coming here. This gem is serving up delicious coffee drinks and small bites. Their standout to me was the Kopi Susu which packs a caffeinated punch but is also sweet and creamy-in my opinion this is all that coffee drinks should be. There's a few tables in and outside and the offer some light food as well. This is perfect for a morning walk or if you have time before catching the metro!
google avatar

Rema M.

Yelp
The Kopi kedua (condensed milk coffee) and beef redang toast were 10/10. Highly recommend and will coming back to order the same thing (though there are many other things on the menu I want to try!). Service was fantastic as was the ambiance of the coffee shop.
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
Love this place! Went with some friends to work on things. It's pretty small but still has a good amount of seating. You just have to get there when it isn't crowded. It can definitely get crowded but the vibe is good you don't even care. I love supporting Asian-owned business so this is certainly on my list to revisit and bring friends to.
google avatar

Jackie W.

Yelp
Klavee is refreshing as it's a mix of coffee and coconut water with lemon. It tasted like a watered down yet hydrating coffee. It was a very cool experience and would recommend on a hot summer day
google avatar

Ryen B.

Yelp
Friendly staff, fabulous oat milk latte. The line moves fast even when it's busy. Highly recommend!

Joshua C.

Yelp
Coffee - baristas knew what they were doing, my shot was pulled fairly well. Would like to come back to try again Vibe - was very crowded when we were here on the weekend so we had to grab and go
google avatar

Hanay W.

Yelp
I loved my experience at Dua! The cashier was very friendly and answered all our questions nicely and knowledgeably. She was able to point me in the right direction with the matcha & advise me on not getting sweetener since it's pre sweetened. They were packed, but service was still quick. It's a tiny shop with some tables and stools in the back , but not much. Perfect for grab & go! Highly recommend their matcha. Delicious!!

Teresa L.

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience. Staff was friendly and the coffee was good. Would come back again to try more of their drinks.
google avatar

LoiLoi F.

Yelp
This might be my first ever 5-star review for coffee... I tried Dua for the 1st time a few months ago and cant seem to get it out my mind. I ordered their vanilla iced latte and iced brown latte are both were Delicious! As a coffee consumer for many years, I would def recommend this cute cafe! Everyone was super helpful and many come here to meet up w/ friends, study, or just a grab & go!
google avatar

Faizah C.

Yelp
I came to this place on the strength of Yelp reviews. I needed a place that had a touch of class, easy access, and chai lattes. Dua delivered. Art, merch , pastries, electronic order, and a space to study. Hallelujah that I have no more school, but I did have work to tend to. I was able to use their Wi-Fi and password and sit with other co-space workers . Pretty productive. I'd definitely visit again. The staff was attentive and friendly.

Norman K.

Yelp
Amazing coffee. Service was fast and knowledgeable. Cool spot to hang out and enjoy a really good cup of coffee.
google avatar

Saba M.

Yelp
They will always be my favorite coffee spot in DC They have amazing quality coffee Tastes soooo good Not crazy about their avocado toast but they have mean croissant I'd definitely recommend
google avatar

Maggie L.

Yelp
Been here twice and it hasn't lived up to the hype just yet! It's a fun coffee shop but very busy, I have always had a long wait and/or issues picking up an online order and there's never any seating so it's a to-go spot. This place is definitely good, lots of fun unique offerings, but nothing has blown me away in here way I expected to. I think the fun latte/ indonesian offerings are probably the best way to enjoy this place.
google avatar

Julio M.

Yelp
Stopped by on travel, and saw they had a pour over offering. Ordered the Bali, and wow. Josue, the guy who made the order took his time and went to work on his art. Great flavor, notes, and great quality coffee. He seemed happy and prideful in making it, and i genuinely enjoyed it.
google avatar

Vidhika B.

Yelp
So happy to have found this little gem of a coffee shop! It's super small, and this both makes it special (so cozy inside) and challenging (can be pretty hard to find a place to sit). The drinks we got were great, the service was friendly, and it's just such a memorable space. We sat for a while in an alcove with comfy chairs and got some work done while sipping on our drinks. I'd love to go back next time I'm in the area -- to hang out for a bit and to try their signature item, the Kopi Susu!
google avatar

Zion H.

Yelp
So if you're like me you may have a girlfriend who loves coffee. If that is the case and you're nearby definitely stop by this place! Some of the best coffee she said she has had lately and the service was quick and effective. Definitely a popular joint with the people there and some seating in the back for those who may want to sit in. If we are ever in town again will definitely stop by again though!
google avatar

Yelp
Overall 4.5/5 coffee experience! Love that the barista did an amazing latte art Latte is medium roast but still a lil roasted than usual which I like since I typically prefer dark roast
