(Drank 03/25/18 SU @ 9:00pm): I wish I knew about this little piece of Dublin in DTLA sooner!
After a non-alcoholic meal with a handful of high schoolers at the nearby CPK, once the "children" went away us adult mice went to "play" at Dublin's Irish Whiskey Pub! I loved Irish pubs (e.g. Casey's, Timmy Nolan's, Tom Bergin's, Tam O'Shanter), so how this one escaped my radar simply befuddled me. Would this "discovery" as we roamed the streets of DTLA be a pleasant surprise!?
PURCHASE
Irish Mule ($10.00): A combination of Tullamore Dew Whiskey, ginger beer, and fresh lime, I was impressed by the near-perfection of how not one ingredient overpowered the others wth the exception of the ginger beer with its distinct flavor. All I asked was less ice, please - slainte https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=HawR803vVnDTkVIwm-ArxA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
Irish Margarita ($12.00): A concoction of Jameson Whiskey, tequila, crème de menthe, lime, and simple syrup, this vibrant green drink tasted like mouthwash - swish-swish spit-spit https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=RDfdXxtq4JjXPLK7hvyw2A&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
Three Weavers Brewing Co. Southbounder Coffee Stout 7.0% ABV ($8.00): A 16 oz draft, it had a thin mustache of a head atop a near-black color, a deep roasted coffee aroma, a medium-heavy body with explicit roasted coffee and slight sweet flavor, and a lingering coffee finish with hints of a barley aftertaste - basically alcoholic coffee https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=zs4NFM2CB_P02cU-wzUNqA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
Guinness Ltd. Smithwick's Irish Red Ale 4.5% ABV ($7.00): A 16 oz draft, it had a medium head atop a copper color, an obvious malt and hint of hops aroma, a medium body with a roasted malty flavor, and a mouthy malt and slight hops aftertaste - a simple non-complex beer.
[ONION RINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT - 4.0 of 5.0 STARS]
Onion Rings ($8.00): This huge portion size consisted of small-large pieces all with a nice thickness. They came out hot, the light tan brown crunchy batter was wonderful and hardly crumbled at all, and each onion ring (not sweet Maui) stayed intact when bitten into. They were fine eaten without the sauces - I'd order them again https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=-eSLCuViaZStwTS7Mg5Fdw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
SERVICE
We were immediately greeted by a friendly server who allowed us to sit anywhere (the place was only half-full at the time but filled in while we were there). We grabbed a table directly in front of the bar, our server handed us menus, gave us a few minutes, returned and took our first drink and food order, the drinks came out quickly while the food arrived minutes later, and once we were ready another round of drinks was in the works. She checked on us periodically and even gave us water glasses. The bill arrived once we were ready with no rush to pay, and all was good to the conclusion of this even - perfect!
PARKING (Varied; $7.00 flat fee this occasion)
They had no parking of their own. However, since my friend and I already parked at a paid lot nearby for dinner, we just walked it from there. Otherwise, there were plenty of paid lots in the area, and minimal street parking (lucky if you got one!).
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE
Located in an old brick building https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=SuFI9VFW1-zVez4FSFVbAw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, you walked into a high-ceiling rectangular establishment that stretched far back filled with plenty of booths, tables, and stools that surrounded an impressive bar area https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=dUUs4CCEf4bOvBIOD5UyJw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. The plethora of Jameson bottles that rimmed the walls caught my attention while USC (Fight On!) and Rams material covered the walls and windows. Hardly an natural lighting came through the minimal front glass door and window while only dim electric lighting filled in the rest. There were several muted but subtitled TVs (great for sports!) while only loud conversations blared in the background.
ATTIRE
Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops.
OVERALL
Dublin's Irish Whiskey Pub was a nice "Emerald Isle" gem in the middle of DTLA and would like to return to catch a game or happy hour (everyday 3pm-6pm). The prices were what I expected for the area, they had a very good drink menu - especially for whiskey and scotch drinkers https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=FjRs1Qdmdx449NGkhu_jmw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, and the food menu was better than I expected https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=7y6oCa9i_BHtOrg9-DQzZw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. I loved the neighborhood feel of the place. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $49.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.0 STARS
