I really wanted to love this place based on the name alone (I know, lame). But, after the overall experience, I doubt I would ever return here willingly. There was something that just felt artificial about the space and small, as well as large, details that were overlooked, like employee backpacks strewn on chairs and booths. The decor somehow felt cheap even though it gave the illusion of being beautiful, and yet there just felt like there was such a disconnect for me in this place. It was just such a mixed experience of some that was great and some that were such fails that I could not bring myself to give this newer restaurant 3 stars. This place is for mostly for ladies who lunch or brunch. Maybe a spot for a date night, but certainly not for the discerning or experienced diners.
To start, the parking is an absolute nightmare at lunch time. Because my partner WFH, and I cleared my lunch time schedule for us to try their HRW (Houston Restaurant Weeks) menu, we thought lunch would be a better time to visit them. We were so wrong. After one sweep around the ENTIRE parking lot, we ended up parking on the street next to the hotel. If you're not familiar with the Uptown area, what this means is that we parked on the street outside of the shopping center and had to walk the short end to the other side to get to the restaurant.
The hostess was not rude, but not friendly either. She wasn't indifferent, but just seemed to lack a little more lustre that is needed for the front of the house. While I did make a reservation, we were not given priority seating. I had requested a booth table, and instead I was either offered the bar, the hightop tables (I was wearing an above the knee dress, so no), or the small two-top tables in the back. I chose to sit in the back since that was the least crappy of the choices. On one hand, it was nice to sit back away from all of the clucking hens and noise of the lunch crowd, but we were at times forgotten about because we were set away from the rest of the tables.
Because the parking was such a nightmare, my partner was kind enough to offer to let me out at the front of the restaurant while he went and parked his vehicle. So I was seated first, offered to take my drink order, and then nothing. By the time he was able to make it to our table, I had my iced tea, but then no one returned to take his drink order. Usually we wouldn't be upset about slower service, but he was on a lunch break, so time was of the essence. We sat waiting, and finally he turned around attempting to catch the eye of any employee walking by. Because we were seated in the back, this was a little harder than expected. For those who have had the pleasure of dining with my partner and I, he is one of the most patient and quiet people you will ever meet. If he starts getting upset or impatient, then your restaurant is f'ing up.
We finally were able to order and decided to order completely different dishes to sample four different dishes. To start, the iced tea is weird. It tastes like a pre-mixed Lipton iced tea with lemon already in it. I hate lemon in my iced tea; I know, it seems like everyone loves it, but I do not. I especially do not like the taste of artificial lemon in my iced tea. The food was a mixed bag. I thought my starter of the tartar toast was very well done, although not the best tartar I've had. My peas, prosciutto, and pasta dish was surprisingly better than I expected it to be. However, my partner was disappointed by his peach burrata starter; he was expecting the peaches to be fresh or maybe grilled at most. Instead he was given a peach marmalade, which he ate, but he expressed that it wasn't his favorite. I did not ask to try it, because the peaches did not look appetizing. He enjoyed his bucatini with mussels, but I did not. The mussels tasted old and past the point they should have been served. I love mussels, especially a serving of moules frites. These were not good. I personally thought his dish was terrible.
After I had used the restrooms, it finally all came together why this place felt disconnected. There was hardly any toilet paper left, and the floor had a sizable space taped off over a drain that had not been properly covered. The bathroom floors were dirty and the experience just felt wrong in just about every way.
