"Duke's might have the coolest sign of all the Michigan Street bars here in Grand Rapids. Neon, zig zags, slab-serif, simple. It's the thing you'll notice first when you visit, glowing red and white. Unlike the other dives, Duke's occupies the authentic, gritty, smokey bar vibe. Not quite a sports bar, not quite a place you'll go just to eat, Duke's is the place you can go for 5 beers in a bucket that'll cost you $6 and a good chance you'll spot some tribal tattoos while you're there. You might see the occasional group of motorcycles splitting time between Duke's and the American Legion Hall across the street. At Duke's, the bartenders are cool, the jukebox is decent, and the beer is cold. If you're planning a bar crawl up Michigan, we recommend that this place is on your list." - CreativeMornings Grand Rapids

I walked by here lots of times and always wanted to stop. I did today and glad I did. Had there hamburger basket and it’s definitely one of the best hamburgers I’ve had , and very reasonably priced. Waitress was awesome!

Nice bartender. Went on a quiet night. I'll come back for sure.

Empty and only one person working. Also most songs blocked on touch tunes so just go to another bar. Won’t be back.

When in town, Do Dukes! So many beer choices on tap! Customer Service is super above. Local crowd is right down embracin'! Chicken wings and with the house sauce is super delicious. Watch the game on screen. Play pool. Good food menu!

Google
Generous pours on their drinks and incredible fries. The staff was polite and helpful but left you alone while you were chatting. Absolute professionals.

Servers and bartenders are fast and friendly here! Great spot to watch a game or play pool. A long time staple on Michigan Street. Love a bar that has free popcorn!

I used to be a fan of Dukes, but after a recent experience, I won't be returning. A group of us went to celebrate a graduation, and everything was going well. My boyfriend and I approached the bar for a drink, and there were no issues with his ID. However, when we returned for a glass of water, the bartender demanded his ID again. Despite his valid vertical Michigan ID (given to those who visit before their birthday), we were told he had to leave. We tried explaining that he's 23, and we were happy to verify his ID. He has been served multiple times at this bar, which is confusing why it was an issue now. When talking to the bartender, she stated that this was a “law” that he cannot be in the building past 9pm with a vertical ID, which is untrue. We would be more understanding if this was a policy at Dukes, however that was not the reason that was told to us. Instead of investigating the situation or having a way to verify his ID, they decided to kick him out, even though he has a valid state ID that is not expired. It's disappointing that such an inconsistent ID policy ruined what was supposed to be a celebratory evening. This experience has left a sour taste, and me and my group of friends will never be returning to Dukes anytime soon.

Never been before so this was my first time coming. We sat at a table for about 20 mins and no one came to help us. I got up grabbed a menu walked to the bar got ignored for another 10 , and it wasn’t even packed . So I finally got her attention and asked could I order food she said no it was to late. I asked the other server and she said yes but they started ignoring me again. I just ended up leaving. The atmosphere looks awesome but the service I got was so horrible. I’ve never been ignored like that in a restaurant ever. I’m not that hard to get rid of so I am definitely coming back one day and hopefully then I can see what dukes has to offer cause I was looking forward to enjoying my night but unfortunately the bartenders wasn’t having a good night. Yelp
Friendly, fast service. Great neighborhood bar. Love their community spirit. Will be back.

Yelp
Stopped in to Duke's on our way back to our hotel and did not notice a bouncer. We walked right in and up to the bar to order a drink before settling in at a small table near the pool table. They had a few basketball games on their TVs and they have TouchTunes if you like requesting your favorite music. Prices were fair and everyone seemed to be having a good time. It got a little sloppy as the night went on, so we left well before closing time to walk back to our hotel. If you are staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites and want to go out but don't feel like going to far, this spot is really convenient.

Yelp
Cam into town for the holidays, this bar is still as I remember. Racist...they do have the cheapest drinks I'll give them that.

Yelp
Came to dukes for the first time ever tonight. walked in with a group of about 6 friends. we walked right in and sat at a table. once going up to the bar to order drinks we were told that all 6 of our IDs were fake and that we were not allowed to be served and have to leave. I am a 24 year old individual with an obvious real license. following this one of the bartenders threatened to walk to the bar across the street to get us black listed. funny enough we walked right over and spoke to the owner who told us that they had no power to do that. i will never be coming back to this establishment, i'd give this place a -5 stars if i could. don't waste your money here.

Yelp
WARNING: Dukes is not disability friendly. I have a service animal and was denied service. I recognize you may deny service to anyone, but it's illegal to deny service strictly based on a disability. There is clearly a lack of training regarding the ADA, and complete discrimination from ownership down to employees. Outside of their illegal conduct, the drinks are the same as any other bar, and you could do better than being degraded by their staff. Do yourself a favor, and skip this spot.

Yelp
I had a great time at Dukes great drinks the servers were better I lost my coat a year and a half ago and got it back! Wallet and all! Great place! Great vibes !! Great food! Ask for B.Humes! And Hodges!! Great place!!

Yelp
This is a solid dive bar. I've been in dirtier dive bars, I've been in cleaner ones. I've been in ones that are more redneck and I've been in dive bars that try to amp up the dive-y, hipster factor. Dukes isn't an extreme- they are just a salt of the earth, middle of the road, working mans bar. The bar has pool tables. There's tv's everywhere. There is a back door and a front door and you can smoke outside both of them. Most of the customers wear a sports team hoodie. It's not uncommon to see a dog in the bar, or someone wearing camo. They have shots on special all the time. They make super strong vodka sodas. It is what it is.

Amy M.

Yelp
I love me some Dukes! They have some really great bartenders. Most of them are super cool & friendly and they have a pretty good selection of food especially since their kitchen area is tiny! Think fried foods & hand helds. Stop in for their specials - Wednesday after 9 pm buy 1 get 1 for $1 is my favorite!

Eric S.

Yelp
I love this place. Very diverse yet friendly and with a terrific view of Mich st. The new remodeling incorporates full glass along Mich and interior upgrades. Very nice, It does pack up early and parking can be difficult however they offer a free lot opposite the bar across street. Another perk!!

Jamie S.

Yelp
Do not recommend this bar. Came in with a group of 6 people. The first 3 people were served alcoholic beverages. One of us tried to buy three drinks for the last 3 of us. For 10 minutes the bartender evaluated our ID's, meanwhile were waiting on drinks while our other friends had been served. We did not attempt to go to this bar underage, all of us were well over the age of 21. After a significant amount of time we were handed our Id's back and were told they could not accept them as they did not look legitimate. This was extremely frustrating and unprofessional, they had no reason to turn us down. There reason was this was a "judgement call." Needless to say we will not be returning, as we left without the one thing we came for - exceptional service, which we clearly did not receive. Racial discrimination.

Yelp
Okay drinks, good prices, not great music for my taste, but the owner and one bartender make the vibe really weird. They stop the music ever so often to give a weird speech about them being in charge and people not being allowed to open the door. They don't have a bouncer so customers would open the door for incoming people. The speech is disruptive and just gives an overall weird vibe like we're being yelled at by teachers in school, we were told they do this every night. I feel like they should find a better strategy to prevent people from opening the door than their speech.

Kyle C.

Yelp
Awesome place. Brandon's grilled chicken BLT is one of the best sandwiches in GR. Becky is awesome and always super helpful. Awesome drinks, cool atmosphere, especially since remodel.

Brad V.

Yelp
Yes, it's a dive bar. Yes, it has upgraded lately. And yes, it's been around awhile. But you won't find better service in town considering the bartender/customer ratio. Love this place, and right now, I miss it! Oh, Becky? Yeah, she's okay!

Yelp
Dukes is a dive bar, but it's a good one! I went here to watch the UM v. MSU game, and had a great time. We arrived right at 11:30 when they opened and grabbed a small table by the windows. Lucky we did because the bar filled quickly! I love that even though they have a divey feel, it's not dark and dingy. Every MSU or Michigan game, they have $2 short bud lights or $3.50 talls, which means you can have some fun without dropping a ton of cash. We also ordered some chips and salsa ($5.50). The chips were warm when they came out, which was awesome, but the salsa tasted like it had gone bad. We still ate the chips, though. The only other complaint I had was that they only had two bartenders staffed for a packed bar. I would've like to have seen a server working the tables and the bar staff taking care of other patrons. Or at least a third bartender. All in all, I liked Dukes, and I'd definitely go back for another game day! Go Blue!

Molly P.

Yelp
Great for a dive bar! Good service, good booze options. Some of the sickest and coldest bathrooms ever, but what can you expect. I always have a good time at these Michigan st. bars, and the drinks are cheaper than going downtown GR!

Susan H.

Yelp
Not observing any Covid protocols. Packed to the max with no one wearing masks.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Free pool on Mondays and 4$ apps during happy hour, seemed like a very good deal! We had 5 drinks and it was a total of 13.50 before tip. Free popcorn in the corner as well :) the place is a pretty decent size, one of the bigger of the "dive" bars on Michigan and looks like it was recently renovated. It's definitely a younger crowd and the bartender's are super nice and provide fast service. They have a lot of high tops and tables, along with a full menu, but it's really about the drinks and the vibes. I would describe it as a "neighborhood feel", the first time we went we felt very comfortable. I would be willing to try some of the food here, although it wouldn't come to mind as a place to go for dinner. They also have a parking lot and street parking all up & down Michigan for those who are drinking responsibly. It's usually packed with cars though - I'd suggest walking or grab an Uber!

Farouk B.

Yelp
Cold beer, horrific food, stiff mixers, de facto non-existent cocktails, sassy staff, thus an excellent hole in the wall dive. The ambiance is drab yet exciting, off-strip Vegas yet neighborhood watering hole, unknown yet familiar, uneasy yet completely comforting. This is a great bar, if you make it one.

Yelp
I came to Grand Rapids knowing no one. Becky immediately made me feel welcome when I stopped by for a drink. Since then I've met great friends here, celebrated birthdays, mourned deaths, and had the time of my life with the best staff you will ever meet. Brandon, Alicia, Tiffany, Thea, Tommy, Krista, Charity, Roach are all great servers & bartenders. In the words of J. R. Moehringer from his book "The Tender Bar"; "We went there for everything we needed. We went there when thirsty, of course, and when hungry, and when dead tired. We went there when happy, to celebrate, and when sad, to sulk. We went there after weddings and funerals, for something to settle our nerves, and always for a shot of courage just before. We went there when we didn't know what we needed, hoping someone might tell us. We went there when looking for love, or sex, or trouble, or for someone who had gone missing, because sooner or later everyone turned up there. Most of all we went there when we needed to be found."

Francesca C.

Yelp
Great drink prices and BEST wings I've ever had! Always a good hometown spot to stop at when I'm in town!

Lauren M.

Yelp
We go here all the time! Great food, cheap drinks, and amazing staff. We're hesitant to move away from our current apartment because we'd miss being right next door. Definitely stop in if you're in the area!

Christopher W.

Yelp
What's not to like? Strong drinks and a cute bartender! My new Monday pit stop! The food was decent (a must have after two strong drinks). Thanks Crista, you made my day!

Marilyn J.

Yelp
Came in with some friends and had our IDs checked for about 15 mins. All of us were well over 21 (those days of fake IDs are way over). The bartenders took our IDs and said they were uncomfortable with serving us. I have never had this happen at any bar, and I will never go back. 1/10, there are so many other bars in GR.

Michael M.

Yelp
Two recent trips and both were disasters. Bartender first time acted like me ordering food was SUCH an imposition. She was doing me a favor pouring my drink even. Bartender second time completely ignored me for at least 15 maybe 20 min and then added insult by coming my direction but instead asking the tall hot guy who just walked in and was standing behind me what he wanted. Literally she had to stand directly in front of me to ask for his order and walked away without acknowledging that I was even there. Walked out empty handed. Avoid this place. If you are older than 30 or part your hair in any way you aren't hip enough.

Cody R.

Yelp
I love their food and the guy who works the bar is great. But tonight, some chick with a cabbage patch face who also failed to serve me appropriately the time before tonight came out and she said, "we work the bar, we don't serve tables at night, sorry hunny!" She's a terrible server/"bartender"

Todd L.

Yelp
Everything you want out of a dive bar, strong drinks and hot bartenders.

Ray R.

Yelp
Really bad service. 20 min to take our food order. 15 min to re fill drink orders. There was maybe 20 people in the bar. Seemingly haven't served people before

Maurice F.

Yelp
Bit divey, the waitress was slammed, and we went on an afternoon to shoot pool. Place was dead but too busy if you know what I mean.

Jenn T.

Yelp
Great drinks. Reasonable prices. Free pool Mondays. GM Becky super friendly. Good bar menu food and location great, right off College and I-196 downtown. Perfect place for a cocktail before a show at Van Andel. Solid food, good drinks, great conversation bar.
