The Best Restaurants to Eat Alone in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Diners flock to Dulan’s for its namesake cuisine: soul food. The Inglewood location is a standby for generously sized platters of fried chicken, flavorful meatloaf, tender oxtails, and smothered pork chops. Sides like macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and cornbread round out plates here, but all first-timers should save room for peach cobbler at the end of a meal, or at least take a slice to go. After a nearly two-year hiatus for renovations, the restaurant reopened in January 2024 with a reenergized dining room and the same great comfort dishes." - Rebecca Roland

Where to Dine Solo in Los Angeles

"Operating since 1999, Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen is SoCal’s traditional soul food specialist. The Dulan Brothers made a name for themselves by serving shockingly large portion sizes of smothered pork chops, smothered chicken, or oxtails served with mac and cheese, greens, stuffing, and gravy. Though the Century Boulevard location is an ideal place to sit and grub solo, the original restaurant on Crenshaw is set to reopen with new seating this fall." - Eater Staff

This was my first time here and it was great! And I came here from Russia to try this amazingly soul food, thanks to my wifey - she always know how to hit the spot 😅😂🙏 Keep it going guys!!

My first time in LA. I was driving down Century Blvd trying to figure out what to eat for lunch. I passed by and saw the Dulan sign. I saw it was soul food, just like my grandma's, so i made a u turn 😋. So glad I did! I purchased the baked fish lunch special. My sides were mac n cheese and candied yams. Let me just say the portions you are given are meals within themselves! I thought to myself, I'm definitely going to need a nap! I wanted fried fish but it was a 30 minute wait. I was willing to wait but my first thought was wanting baked fish, so that was my sign that I needed baked😅 The service was so warming like family. I also ordered a small strawberry lemonade and banana pudding. I know I said lunch buuutt I had to order dessert...it was my first time here! The wait time was less than 10 minutes. I thought it was a sit down place but they had outside sitting only. It was such a lovely patio setting! Now to the taste! Everything 👏🏿was 👏🏿 HITTIN', slapping, da bomb, knarley, whatever jargon you use for good ...it was THAT! no complaints from me! Oh and the little muffins...I wanted to hug somebody granny, it was just icing on the cake. I will be back every time I visit LA. Like everyone needs this in their life

When the line is long, you know the food is fire. Five stars all the way. If I could give more, they’d have 10. Great food, friendly staff, fast service (even with the long line)

I have given up on Dulan's because of two unpleasant experiences in a row. Ordered four dinners on Sunday, December 22, 2024. Order 270868134. Two turkey wing dinners and two fried chicken dinners. This was a delivery order. When I received the order, the turkey wing dinners were placed in a bag together. Both dinners were packed sideways in the bag and all the contents were spilled in the bag from very sloppy packing. The supervisor on duty by the name of of Ashley was very rude. Told me I could get a refund for only one plate. I told her that was unacceptable since it was their negligence in packing the order properly that caused my food to be delivered in a big mess. I had a similar situation a few weeks earlier when I ordered 4 Sunday dinners and they were delivered without the drinks. The restaurant didn't want to take responsibility of their mistake at that time as well. I was told I could come in and pick-up the missing drinks if I wanted them. That was absolutely ridiculous because I paid for delivery and wasn't going to go across town to pick up something they forgot to include with the order. The owner of this location should be aware of what is going on at this establishment. The customer service skills of the so-called supervsior and manager at this location is absolutely horrendous. I will in no way continue to patronize this location or any other Dulan's location. At the time I am writing this review, I still haven't received a refund on the two damaged dinners that I received on 12/22. I suggest anyone think twice about ordering any food from this location, becauae you will be guaranteed to receive the same type of lousy service that I received. Take your money and patronize establishments that really value their customers, but Dulan's clearly does not value customers!

Google
The aroma of this place will draw you in if you happen to be close The food is on point and exactly the soul food you are looking for I ordered brisket and links. If I had gotten what I ordered, I'd be chillin Make sure to check your order, substitutions will be given without warning, so if you paid the extra for specific item, you are out of luck since the kitchen doesn't communicate with the register As for fixing the problem, good luck The wait is already 40 mins roughly, without knowing whether you are getting what you ordered that makes it even longer, double wait for your original order I would definitely try again, just order online and make sure to check your order so that when it's wrong, you can only wait the extra half hour

Just ate here this week, and it was great! I got their fried fish combo with greens and Mac n cheese, and it was delicious! I haven't had fried fish like this in years, and they give you 3 giant pieces! The greens were nice and savory, and the mac n cheese was fresh and tasty. I also enjoyed their strawberry lemonade which paired well with my meal. If you can get a meal at Dulan's, you won't regret it! I'll be back again soon, thanks!!

I haven't been here in a while last time wasn't such a good experience. So I decided to give them another shot and they didn't disappoint. I ordered the short rib dinner. It came with 3 choices of sides. I ordered yams, green beans with carrots, and mac and cheese. When I tell you the food was 🔥 the green beans were delicious candied yams and short rib/rice and gravy were good too. Didn't care for the mac and cheese were too dry for my liking plate was heavy they give you a good amount for the price which was 31 dollars and some change. Would've taken a picture but my 6-year-old granddaughter went in on it.

Black Owned Gold. April 2025 UPDATE: 1 Strong Suggestion: Trim the Fat Membrane of of The Short Ribs. I shouldn't have to fight for my life to FIND the meat on a Short Rib! Not for almost $30 a plate!!! Y'all hurt my feelings AND my pockets with that. *Sad face* NO COMPLAINTS OUTSIDE OF THAT. That Sweet Potato....... MOUTH DROOLING.

Yelp
The food is great but pay attention to your restaurants surroundings. The man selling things next to the restaurant has innapropriate vulgar music blasting. I'm glad my child was not with me at the time I ordered food here.

Katina S.

Yelp
The food was really good. I had the Mac n cheese, short ribs, yams, rice and gravy, and collard greens. I wish they would have given us more short ribs for what we paid. I thought everything was delicious.

Yelp
I've never ordered from this location until Thursday October 17th... Ubereats order of baked chicken (dark meat), cabbage, mac & cheese, dressing w/gravy and cornbread muffins... I got white meat instead (it was dry) and a smidgen (and I do mean a smidgen) of gravy so the dressing was dry...Very disappointing... Not as flavorful as Dulan's on Crenshaw...3/5 stars...I won't patronize this location again...

Yelp
Dulan's Century Blvd.: A Disappointing Replacement for Bertha's I've been a dedicated Dulan's customer for nearly 30 years, Brunch & Lunch the Crenshaw location and even the Inglewood spot, when Crenshaw was only doing catering. I had never eaten at the 1714 W Century Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90047 location, which used to be Bertha's Soul Food Cafe. But we were in the neighborhood and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, this was a huge mistake. The smothered short ribs were a complete disappointment. Instead of the tender, fall-off-the-bone classic, I got two thin, Korean-style slices swimming in a watery, beige gravy. The red beans were practically nonexistent - literally 2 table spoons of beans over a cup of rice, and the entire meal felt like a pale imitation of what Dulan's used to be. The only saving grace were the candied yams. At over $25, this meal was a total rip-off. I'm heartbroken to say that I can no longer recommend Dulan's. Something has drastically changed, and it's not for the better. #dulans #soulfood #disappointment #whathappened #notthesame #berthas #soulfoodlosangeles

Yelp
My friend recommended me this spot. He is from Inglewood so I trusted his word. Overall, it was okay. Fried chicken tasted good, but it was extremely tough and dry. I got a thigh piece. Unbearably dry. However, the drum stick was good. Tender enough. Flavor was great. Good seasoning. Sides were good. Fluffy and soft corn bread. Corn bread dressing was good. Not sure if I would go back. I have had better.

Yelp
Went to SoFi stadium and Dulan's was nearby. Note Sunday there is a different menu. Lined up to order it moved quickly went into another line to pickup here's a pic of our family feast of oxtails (5 pieces) on bed of rice...i will return and try chicken next time. Food was solid! Cane with sweet tea, small dessert cup, two sides and two muffins.

Yelp
This Dulan's Never Disappoint!!! The Food Is Always Good!!! The Best Soul Food Restaurant In LA!!!

Beyoncé C.

Yelp
This the worst Dulan's. Food was bland , Mac and cheese wasn't baked enough. Chicken had no flavor and the greens taste like water. The one in Manchester better. They giving all Dylan's a bad name ! Idk who back there in the back cooking ... but they need to step their cookie up.

Pamela C.

Yelp
The food was terrible. The chicken was dry. The greens taste old and spoiled. The succotash taste like it came from a can. It was just awful. The food was just awful.

Yelp
Met up with a friend for lunch. Today was especially busy because it was the grand opening I arrived earlier and saw valet or street parking available. After I parked, I followed the aroma of food which led me to the line for ordering. I also noticed an area for take out which is located on the outside side of the building. The line to order done in moved quickly between the two cashiers. You can view the food menu on the kiosk located above the order station. I tried to use my Apple pay but for whatever reason it didn't accept so I paid with my bank card. I received a number to place for the server to bring your food to the table. The love the open kitchen where diners can view the food preparation. The floor tiles and walls were warm and inviting like a being at someone's home. I love the family history and community photos on the walls. Once you get a table number, find a table for the servers to bring your food with the option seating either indoors or on the heated patio. I also saw another outside area at the back of the restaurant where there was live music. The restrooms are located near the back of the restaurant. The table and chairs reminds me of a café with spacious seating and gathering space for a large event. My food arrived to my table by server Micheal about seven minutes from the time of order. Leonard, also stopped my table to make sure I had what I ordered was correct. Later when my friend arrived and needed her food warmed up, Christian, the GM took care of it and also stopped by to check on us. Lots of great customer service and personal attention. The food was fresh and in large portions. I had the fried fish with a big mason jar of cold sweet tea/ lemonade, red beans/rice, and streamed cabbage (to peppery for me) so I change for collard greens to go with best corn muffins. We could end the day without house-made sweet potato pie. The kitchen did a great job. It was so much to absorb but enjoyed the day. We had a blast and will be back for more.

Yelp
You can always count on Dulan's! Everything was well seasoned, Fried Chicken was crispy and moist. Mac n Cheese was so good and the corn bread was Fire. Check this place out for some home cooked Soul Food.
google avatar

Yelp
Picked up dinner from here last night. First time purchasing from Dulan's. It was delicious! Home cooked taste and good portions size that defiantly offset the price, considering prices are going up everywhere their prices aren't bad. Two dinners fed 4 adults and a 2 year old. You gotta try their desserts - they amazing too. Plus friendly service!

Yelp
Dulan's is one of the oldest Soul Food Restaurants in Los Angeles. They serve some of the finest cuisine you can find. The food is fresh and delicious! I love this place!!

Eric G.

Yelp
Honestly I don't see the reason why there's 3 stars but for me this place is legit. Yeah the wait can be a little long and the service isn't always great. The quality of soul food is incomparable. My go to is the smothered chicken(usually go with the white meat) and mashed potatoes / macaroni and cheese for the sides. The chicken and the gravy are a match made in heaven not too salty but perfectly seasoned. The sides are always tasty especially the Mac (not runny but baked to perfection) there isn't much space to sit and eat so you're better taking it to go. I guess if you're not from there you don't know what to expect hence the 3 stars. But please don't let uneducated reviewers stop you from trying so great soul food.
google avatar

Mychel S.

Yelp
Food is quite tasty but the customer service is not the greatest. Make sure you check your order before you leave the restaurant because it may not be accurate. See picture: I ordered rice with gravy and instead got cornbread stuffing with gravy.

Yelp
Mid food, high prices, ok portion sizes (on protein) but good service. Dulan's is crazy overhyped and to be honest you're better off going to Soul Food Shack down the street. Service was friendly, and food came out fast despite waiting 20min in line to order. I paid $20 for a meatloaf plate and a choice of cornbread and two sides, so I picked mac and cheese and cornbread dressing. The cornbread dressing had great flavor and the gravy was delicious, however the texture was literally like baby food (as someone wrote in another review), which was odd because the cornbread dressings I've had at other soul food spots have a great variety of texture rather than mush. The mac and cheese was not that good, it wasn't necessarily bad, but the noodles were definitely overcooked and the sauce was really similar to velveeta. It had texture but also no flavor at the same time, and I feel like mac and cheese is a strong telling of whether the rest of the food is good or not. Meatloaf was disappointingly small in size, although the picture I added was already bitten through, trust me when I say that protein portion was small as hell. The tomato sauce on top tasted like canned tomato soup and IMO didn't compliment the meatloaf very well. I will say the meatloaf had decent texture and flavor though. Cornbread was delicious, great taste and texture- was probably the best thing out of my order. I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it was a miss. It sucks that all the lower rated reviews have highlighted the same issues (quality of food, texture, mac and cheese) but unfortunately there was no improvement because I ended up having the same experience with their food. $20 is crazy for a palm sized amount of meat, velveeta mac, and mushy cornbread dressing WITHOUT a drink. Not an ideal representation of how soul food is. Wouldn't come back or recommend to anyone.

Yelp
Wanted a good Sunday dinner - we decided Dulans on Century. What a HUGE disappointment! Let me start with we have eaten at the Manchester location - which was always delicious and fresh. We chose the Century location as it's closer . Something has shifted dramatically with Dulans quality, at least at this location. I had fried chicken, corn bread dressing, Mac n cheese, and greens. My guy had short ribs, yams, rice n gravy. * Mac n cheese - the worst! It's nothing more than big noodles with some waxy cheese- morelike velveeta cheese sauce. No real cheese, tasteless *Corn bread dressing: pure mush- like baby food - disgusting. * Yams - were canned! Who serves canned yams? * Short Ribs - tough, not tender or flavorful, dog meat. * Greens - were the only decent item. * Fried chicken - was so-so in that several pieces but not seasoned well. Adolph - the original owner would turn over in his grave . This is an opportunity for black ppl to come up in our community with our food - yet THIS Dulans failed us !Its as though they are trying to trick patrons with this subpar food. I feel cheated and mad as we spent nearly $60 for takeout, which was bs! I'm feeding this slop to the feral cats on my backyard

Yelp
Great co workers n get your food right away n always get your food on time n never late

Yelp
After yesterday's dinner I order over 60.00 with extra foods added to my order. This was the worst soul food I ever had. I heard it been a hit and miss with your food order now I been dealing over 20 years with the Inglewood) location, been using the LA Dulan because it is closer to my home This one is the worst out of the 3 . New employee all the time here, got to fine somewhere else to go. when I don't feel like cooking.

Regina L.

Yelp
Had a serious craving for soul food and made the decision to drive from Orange County to LA! Yeah I saw the posted sign stating to check your order before leaving! I did just that, ordered a smothered pork chop meal only to find 1/2 a pork chop that was covered in Gravy! Guess I should've dug through the Gravy! Definitely will not take that drive and pay $$$ for a half a** order received

Yelp
Dulans keep doing yo thang!...Keep loyal to those Delicious Soul Food recipes of Dulans! I've enjoyed your food for at least 20 years! Keep having good, polite, professional service with competent employees! Keep staying in our area and offering multiple locations as well as online ordering on various sites and apps! Also catering! Please make sure those turkey wings are cooked to tenderness and not too sweet on that dressing. Wishing you the best and even better Dulans!...

Yelp
For this food to be so delicious and one of my favorite long term soul food spots to eat in Los Angeles I must say how tired I am of experiencing such a nasty horrible attitude of customer service when it comes to ordering my food.. the young African American female at the register has a very poor nasty un professional non inviting mood upsetting way about her self it's like she wants to be an hole for no apparent reasons and she's like this every time I come here ... lol or put someone else with a much more personal approach to be the first person a customer in counters everytime I come here her attitude is the same which is terrible.. just because we black doesn't mean we can't be polite and professional towards one another.. we gots to do better

E S.

Yelp
Inconsistent service. Paid over 65$ for bones..my elderly parents were so disappointed they didn't eat their meats, oxtails and short ribs. Called to complain and no one answered. Will be trying again today. To much money spent on 2 meals for such disappointment. Need a new soul food spot now..

Summer M.

Yelp
People hype this food up and it was horrible. I asked for dark meat, when I got to work and I was about to eat my food, I had white meat, I don't like breast, so they basically give u whatever they want you to have. The red beans and rice was horrible, it taste like chilli if I wanted chilli I would of ordered chilli‍ the white rice was not hot, didn't care for the rice and gravy either‍ you can tell that the rice was 5 minute rice the yams was grossI honestly wasted my money, I threw the food away never again‍
google avatar

Angella C.

Yelp
Dulan you have truly redeemed yourself! I got a Sunday fried chicken dinner and a meatloaf dinner. The chicken was freshly cooked tasted like it just came out the deep fryer. The greens were phenomenal, the yams you can tell they cooking from scratch, and the cornbread dressing was delicious very consistent not runny. My son got the meatloaf with mashed potatoes dressing, Black Eyed Peas and macaroni and cheese. We couldn't even eat half of our food I ate half of half of the chicken meal. And the drink the mixed sweet tea and lemonade was delicious, the sweet potato pie scrumptious, chocolate cake good too. We back on 100!

Yelp
I love the set up. The workers are welcoming & fast paced. This is the best location visit & see for yourself!

Yelp
Everytime I come in from LV, I gotta go get a plate on the way home. Fresh greens, cheesy Mac and cheese and smothered chicken with dressing, LAWD!!!! Worth the visit if you love great food!!!!

Yelp
Food is so BOMB! Serving sizes are huge! The customer service is pretty good. Parking is great! Lines can get a little long ! But honestly it is so GOOD! Worth the wait for sure

Yelp
Man I wish I would have took pictures of our fresh and beautiful plates! My husband and I decided to go with this location and man oh man! I had the mac and cheese, candied yams and fried chicken. The seasoning, the flavor, the freshness. My God. My husband had the baked fish (I still can't get over the flavor!) , cornbread stuffing and oh man the greens!!! The cornbread muffins are insanely delicious and fresh! The service was attentive and timely. I look forward to exploring more menu items . Lets go Dulan's. Shot out to Francis, superb quality customer service!!!

Alicia T.

Yelp
Black owned restaurant!!! My job catered us lunch from this restaurant today. We had backed chicken, mashed potatoes, green bean, and a dinner roll. The baked chicken. It was very juicy and well seasoned. The mashed potatoes were AMAZING! Seasoned perfectly!!!! The green beans were okay... too much black pepper and a little crunchy... I prefer my green beans on the soft side. The dinner roll was yummy (can't mess that up). I honestly look forward to trying different food items from this restaurant. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to others.
google avatar

Latonia S.

Yelp
Wasn't happy about the fried chicken they placed foil and the green juice made it soggy the fish was alright yams and greens was as well the dressing could have been a better portion though the price of the strawberry lemonade was a bit much wasn't that good wasn't what I truly thought it would be guess I'm use to my own food honestly wasn't that impressed but at lease they are excepting the hot meal program for people who can't cook their own meals and are homeless

Linda D.

Yelp
$31 for tasteless garbage! I ordered Short-ribs not a side of beef with orange Mac N Noodle paste!
google avatar

Pat H.

Yelp
I usually only go to this restaurant around the holidays. This has been my custom since the transition of my spouse. The food is usually good, although through the years, the portions have decreased as the price has increased. I am writing this review because of a failing customer service response recently. I ordered my normal baked chicken all white meat and sides; however, I received some white and dark. I don't care for legs or thighs, and that's what I received along with breast and wing. When I pointed out that's not what I ordered, I was told that's how they do this on Sundays. I requested a refund as not what I ordered and told no. There's no consideration that there's no mention of this policy on the website, or I would have ordered something different....I feel this exception for Sundays should be posted and some accommodation should have been made because it wasn't...Just saying no is not a customer service policy!
google avatar

Yelp
At this point I'm trying to find a 'soul food' restaurant with adequate 'Mac & Yams' and dulans just weak as hell. I ain't sorry neither. Like look at the pic!!...... look at the pic bro. The yams was like barely cooked, cause I couldn't slice through them with the fork, big blocks of yams. Like they cut the yam into 4s. The Mac and cheese, disrespectful. The chicken.... the dude called me to the window and TOLD ME that there was no more White meat, I didn't mind.... chicken dry like elbows. NOW, the experience. I called the place 30min before closing they didn't take my order. I was only a minute or so away, pulled into the NARROW parking lot and went to wait in line. By the time I got to the front all they had left was rib tips and certain chicken pieces; certain sides, and the girl in front of me copped the last red velvet cake. The wait took 28 min. My food came out in about 10 min. Solid.... 2 stars; they earned the second star cause dude TOLD ME about the chicken shortage, but not the guy after me lol. Good looks bro.

Yelp
My Girlfriend and I celebrated our anniversary here for dinner and let me tell you the food was amazing. Customer service was also really good. I am originally from San Diego and the food just reminds me of my parents cooking and it tastes so similar. The first time coming here my friend brought me on my birthday and I was amazed on how perfect everything is all the way down to the portions it just blows my mind but getting back to our anniversary I can't remember the servers name but he deserves a round of applause he even gave us extra corn bread

Yelp
This is my first time ordering food from Dulan's. Great delivery service and the food was simply delicious. Kudos to Postmates for timely delivery and Kudos to the Kitchen staff that prepared such a delicious meal. The fried chicken was delightful, the collards were appetizing, the macaroni and cheese was exquisite, the black-eyed peas was extremely tasteful and the peach cobbler was simply heavenly.

Bri B.

Yelp
Today was my first time trying Dulans. My man raved about Dulans on Manchester so we figured this location would be good too. Wrong. The Mac n cheese was soggy and flavorless. It seems like they made the cheese sauce and just sprinkled a little bit of cheese. I ordered the oxtails and my man ordered the short ribs. Both tasted like they were seasoned with lemon pepper. It was the weirdest thing. I bought a slice of red velvet cake, it looked great but when I smelled it, it had a fruity smell. When I tasted it, I could have sworn I tasted cherry. I was very disappointed and would not recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Lunatic L.

Yelp
I didn't like the short ribs at all the side orders are better then they meat smh The best thing they have there is the Arnold Palmer drink it's better then all the food there so if I ever go back I'm only going for the Arnold Palmer drink ONLY!!!!!! 1 star for the drink and NO STARS FOR THE FOOD!
google avatar

Teresa E.

Yelp
Pros - Food was absolutely delicious. Cons - You can only order & eat outside. Nobody tells you to pick up at another window as we sat at the patio waiting for our food. They give you cheap plastic utensils with no napkins.

Sherry M.

Yelp
I am visiting from Ohio and was told to stop In Dulan's for good soul food. Well I'm glad that I did, the food was EXCELLENT!

Idalee P.

Yelp
I purchased some soul food today for my friend and I. I ordered the meatloaf dinner. The meatloaf didn't taste good at all. I don't know what type of meat was used. Never again. I tried. 1star for me.

Yelp

Yelp
I purchased a smothered chicken meal with yams, dressing, and cabbage. The food was horrible! The cabbage was greasy, the yams stringy, the chicken and dressing very mushy. I was very, very disappointed. Regarding the cost, I need a refund.

Yelp
food for delivery is impossible to get. Not clear at all. They need to fix problems.

Yelp
The food looks so good, oxtail w/gravy 9.5 but the Mac and cheese can be alittle more cheesy 7.5 and for the red beans and rice 7.5 . And other lunch plate i got smothered chicken with Mac and cheese was 7.5 over all chicken breast was alittle dry. It was my first time going to try this place. Came highly recommended and always seeing it on social media but me personally it did not live up to the hype and the A1 reviews everyone talks about. But the oxtails is , " I'll be back for more".

Yelp
Odered Short Rib dinner the meat that was given to me was not short ribs it was some dried up, tough, tasteless crap. I couldn't believe they would serve that to someone and charge over $30.00 for it. I could not even eat it what a waste of money. I should have known something was wrong when I saw a steel wire in my mac and cheese. I been going to this place for years can't believe that this would happen especially the BS meat they served me. Done with this place.
