5 NYC Restaurants to Try This Weekend - Eater NY

"The seating at one of Harlem’s newest entrants is limited: a row of half a dozen stools are lined up against a counter. But it’s just enough to enjoy the five different kinds of dulce de leche-filled cookies or alfajores that are available at Chilean bakery Dulceria. The quirky shapes and fun toppings — including one covered in powdered sugar — are just as pleasing to the eye as they are to taste, and on a recent visit I found it hard to stop at three. This charming bakery also has a vast selection of sweet pastries and savory sandwiches if the dulce de leche overwhelms — that certainly wasn’t the case for me." - Eater Staff

Harlem Bakey DulcerĂa Expands With Enoteca

"Inside the Harlem bakery DulcerĂa, Marco Matheu is talking about the wonders of manjar, a Chilean confection prepared by heating sugar and milk for several hours. [...] Their narrow brick-walled space on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, in the neighborhood where the couple has lived for six years, quickly turned heads thanks in part to the undeniable allure of their traditional manjar. [...] Other specialities at DulcerĂa include the torta mil hojas, brazo de reina, and chilenitos." - Muriel AlarcĂłn Luco

Google
I found Dulceria among a list of 30 outstanding coffee shops in NYC. From Battery Park City, where I live, I took the trip to Harlem. Yes, the latte was delicious, the sweets were too, and the goat cheese empanada was huge and tasty. But above all, the staff, including the gentleman who is a co-owner, were very hospitable, making sure that I got what I wanted. Indeed, I did! Such a positive experience!

Google
Some Chilean friends recommended us this place so we went and the experience was wonderful. We had the pleasure of having a great conversation with Daniel, Marco, and Felipe. The pastries are really good. I highly recommend the mil hojas cake and the corn pascualina.

Google
Very new place in South Harlem. Because of the soft opening, the business hours are pending, as variety of pastries as well. The place is very small, hardly squeeze with two humans on a row, but incredibly cozy and fantastically friendly staff. The pastries is mostly chilean, but you might find some latinamerican inspiration. Very fresh, very tasty, very good. Absolutely new point on the Harlem map, sort of Jewel in the Crown of Harlem Bakeries. Well done.

Google
Amazing. If you want to taste a different type of sweetness, come here and explore! Chefs are from Chile so you know they will bring the flavor of South America! I had the banana dulce de leche & the gentleman was so nice that he gave me a treat for free 👏

Google

Google
I have never been to the coffee shop myself, but someone brought a few of their creations to the office to share. That soft cookie looking thing was so rich and decadent, one of the best sweet treats I’ve tasted recently.

Google
Just ordered a whole chocolate cake (highly recommend it!) for my birthday and it was so incredible I didn’t want it to end so I froze some so I can have some in the future. Big hit with the whole family, even the not so chocolate lovers. It’s not too sweet which is key for me!!! And the layers of mouse and cream and crepes are perfectly balanced. Thank you guys!!!!!!! Also, their cheeses are incredible and be sure to try their breads and other sweets!

Google
Got a cake and it was delicious. It is a bit pricey but worth it. The service was great and got to sample a few pieces which helped us buy more. The small shop was clean and inviting. Definitely worth the trip.

Yelp
Cute little pastry/coffee shop with a good assortment of treats. Went after brunch in hopes of satisfying my sweet tooth, and while the service was amazing, the pastries were a bit lackluster. My favorite was the key lime pie tart with meringue which was tangy and not too sweet. The passion fruit one was surprisingly just ok, I thought it was a little cake but it was more of a mousse. The chocolate one was almost tooo rich. The shop does seem to be very popular as all the pastries were almost cleared out by 3pm. Would come back to try the coffee but I'm not sure about the rest.

Yelp
Wow I am so lucky to have spotted Dulceria out of the corner of my eye this evening! So many beautiful decadent new desserts to try! If youve been watching and drooling over the Chilean food features on netflix, I highly recommend you get your fix at dulceria! Wonderful customer service as well, they were so helpful, patient and informative. They answered my many questions and offered suggestions based on my preferences (really so many new ones to choose from) !

Yelp
I was really interested in finding a go to bakery near my apartment. I found the DulcerĂa (a latinx owned business) and decided to give it a try. Let's just say I went back just a few days later! There cakes are all delicious, flaky, and creamy! My favorite is their banana cream. I also tired their challah bread (only available on Fridays) and it looked and tasted amazing. Pro tip: Use it to make some amazing French toasts.

Yelp
I popped in nearly a year ago, whenever it was that they just opened, but I just ogled then. The space is beautiful. The glass cases are crystal clear, giving a nearly unfiltered view to the creamy colorful delectables inside. And there are always fresh baked goodies in glass containers sitting atop the counters. I bumped into a neighbor while there recently, who said he has been going there almost daily to buy fresh bread since the pandemic. Eventually, he said, he's pretty much been buying all of his groceries there since he learned they even sell olive oil! This last time I made a bit of a splurge since I couldn't choose. I think what I ordered were the Milhoja Chilenas. One banana cream, one Dulce de Leche, two chocolate mousse. All heavenly. I don't think I'll ever walk past there again without stopping in for a treat.

Yelp
You haven't eaten food until you've had a slice of lucuma dulce de leche torte. I can't wait to go back to South America in a few months and have the real deal, but until then, this interpretation of lucuma delivers. Also try the unusual alfajores with thin, cracker covers. Mmmmm!

Yelp
Dulceria is my favorite spot for a sweet treat in Harlem. I'm an ice cream gal through and through, but for these pastries I would trade a scoop of my favorite Sugar Hills Creamery flavor in a heartbeat. Pretty much everything I have tried at Dulceria is extraordinary. The guys are Chilean, super friendly, and happy to walk you through the many options in the dessert case. Come once and you'll be hooked. You'll start picking up a pastry or five to bring to a dinner party. You'll start detouring up here from Central Park. You'll bring a date, and eat your treats on a bench nearby in between making out. $6 a piece adds up fast though, so beware of ordering multiple pastries! If you're not especially hungry, consider ordering one of the denser pastries (the chocolate raspberry is my favorite) with two forks.

Yelp
Currently closed, which is sad, but it looked very promising though! Hope it opens again.

Yelp
Quaint dessert shop-- went by to try their dulce de leche treats. The prices here are a little too steep for the quality you're getting as some other reviews have already highlighted. We tried the chocolate cake, and 2 alfajores (one with the cookie and one merengue) and 2 americanos (coffees). The cake slice was $8.50 for a pretty anemic slice. The cookies are $4.50 each which is a price I could not justify after trying them. The cake was alright-- nothing out of the ordinary. It was def rich. The merengue alfajor was a bit dry and lacked taste besides the dulce de leche filling which was a little on the dark side, borderline burnt tbh. The cookie alfajor was great-- the shortbread cookie was crumbly and tasty albeit a bit dry. Although good I really can't justify the $4.50 price tag. The coffee? Worst I've had in a minute. Burnt and bitter. So bad I considered asking for my money back haha but I took the L and tossed the coffees instead. $30 for 2 small cookies, a thin slice of cake and 2 americanos-- sounds about right for Manhattan but not worth it based on taste and quality imo. Don't think I'll return.

Yelp
We keep coming back, not necessarily for the drinks or the sweets, but for their empanadas! They have beef with a hard-boiled egg, goat cheese, and shrimp empanadas. The crust on the empanadas is not deep fried. It's nice and thin with a pleasant chew. The salmon/lox and cream cheese sandwich was also surprisingly delightful. Who knew such a simple sandwich could be so enjoyable? The roll it was on was solid but not dry or hard. It was easy to bite into while being nice and hefty. The owner is super nice and let us use a restroom next door, where he will one day open a wine bar. Can't wait!

Yelp
My sister was in town and stumbled into this pastry shop. When she mentioned the name, I was super excited because I've been wanting to try the place. My sister said the pastry shop was cute and a variety of baked items were available. She said the staff were nice and shared the history of the pastries. She bought Chilean alfajores and was excited for me to try since she was introduced to the yummy dessert by her coworker in Los Angeles. The alfajores were a bit dry and crumbled in my mouth. She expressed the same and we both thought, they were okay. Maybe it was a different version, we weren't sure. The size was similar to other alfajores, but cost $4/piece. A small sized pastry that lacked the richness in taste, it didn't justify the price tag. I plan to make a visit when I get a chance and try other desserts and pastries, possibly it's a one off.

Yelp
Been to this place couple of times and will be back. The pastries are fantastic , rich though NOT TOO SWEET !!!! Their Chala definitely passed the approval ! Highly recommended to order it every Friday . Very easy to access from midtown and for the locals ..... You are lucky to have this bakery at your neighborhood.

Yelp
Babka delivery was very disappointing. I've tried many babka in NYC and this one is the most substandard. I'm almost certain the loaf is not fresh, rather was previously frozen. It's more like bread than a flaky pastry, it's dry, there are not layers as seen in traditional babka, and there really isn't much chocolate. I like the pastries from Dulceria that I've tried, but I definitely wont be back for the babka.

Yelp
Since they opened, I used to love coming here with my son, very regularly. He loved their chocolate and cheese bread. They shut down and I've been attempting to go next door to Enoteca for months to get the baked goods. Every single time when management has been there they say "come back on the weekends" (which I have) or "there is none" with apathy. Today was my last attempt. I will not be going back. Why not try to have better customer service for your regulars?

Yelp
This place really lives up to its name, dulceria means sweetness in Spanish. I've walked by this place a few times but it was always after closing time. Today I got the chance to finally try it. It's a small place and due to the Covid restrictions only a couple of people are allowed to enter, I waited a bit on line and then a very friendly staff member came out to ask for my order in order to speed up the process. I ordered a few of the breads to try out, my favorite was the Brazilian pan de queso since it has a nice subtle cheese taste. I also ordered the dulce de leche with merengue, omg this dessert was amazing!! The merengue part just melts in your mouth and then you have the delicious sweetness of the dulce de leche. I was really impressed with the warm, attentive service and how cute this place is. I'm looking forward to trying out some of the other pastries, especially a passion fruit cake that I saw in the display case.

Yelp
I went there to check it since I was in the neighborhood, I was greeted immediately by Marco who was very sweet and recommended some delicious pastries and even gave me a taste of the pastries. Ended buying some tiramisu, flan, pistachio cake, and some other nice things. It's a Chilean inspired bakery and cafe definitely will be back for more.
google avatar

Linda W.

Yelp
It's a super cute little place, and totally tucked away so if I hadn't placed a order or found this place on yelp, I would really have passed it. I have to say that it is pricey, but it was good. Not a place I can afford to go other than special occasions.
google avatar

Grace B.

Yelp
The cakes look too fancy to actually be good, but they are great. Passion fruit and dulce de leche both highly recommended. (Chocolate desserts, usually my favorite, might be the weak spot at Dulceria.) And addendum on challah: it is good but vexingly hard to get. It seems to appear on Friday afternoons, exact time hard to pin down, and in limited quantities.
google avatar

Ceren A.

Yelp
Pricy for no apparent reason. Empanada for $8? Tiramisu for $8? Even for New York, that's exorbitant. Anytime I went there during Covid, there were too many people inside and I waited outside but there was no sign or acknowledgment that I was there or a sense of urgency. Won't be going back, as the owner himself suggested I shouldn't if I don't like their prices :)

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in the city, it offers an exclusive variety of dulces along with daily specials such as Empanadas, sandwiches and other pallet pleasing meals. The little cakes and pastries are unparalleled in taste and presentation. This is a true gem and the owners are wonderful. They also make event cakes which are scrumptious and also beautiful. Love, love, love --------

Yelp
This place is responsibly open during the Pandemic!! I love the whole feel of this small pastry/coffee spot. Very good cappuccinos, wonderful ownership, great treats!

Melech F.

Yelp
Unbelievably delicious. I'm honestly not sure how anyone could give this place less than five stars. Their pastries are incredible, seriously some if the best I've had in New York or anywhere in the world. Their service is gracious and wonderful and for the culinarily adventurous everything they make is exceptional. People - you have to come here, ask the chef what his favorite is, and buy one plus one meringue. Trust me. Dulceria - thank you for coming to Harlem and sharing your incredible pastries with us.
google avatar

Pierre J.

Yelp
Looks great but doesn't taste like much unfortunately! Pound cake was like a dry brick. I have a sweet tooth and doesn't like to waste, but that one ended up in the trash The layered cakes were barely a step up. Shame, was excited about having a new gem in the neighborhood ‍
google avatar

Ivy S.

Yelp
I've been here twice and each time got coffee and a different pastry. Coffee is good; consistent. Their pastry has a Chilean take; specialties with a lot of dulce de leche and Latin American flavors. You can find Alfajores to empanadas... Also a very friendly owner

Marin R.

Yelp
Every bite in this delightful, friendly, Latino-owned spot is delicious. A wonderful additional to the neighborhood, in addition to its sister-restaurant Enoteca.
google avatar

Yelp
DULCE DE LECHE latte has become my daily go to!! Great service, great empanadas, I love their cheese bread, delicious chai lattes. Love this place!!!

Maria E.

Yelp
Bought a delicious (8"?) lemon tart for a friends engagement which looked very festive! Had gold foil in the center! Also got slices of a passion fruit dulce de leche torte and a chocolate raspberry torte. The passion fruit one was a big hit. Definitely a hidden gem of a place -- was searching on Yelp for a place where I could buy a celebratory whole dessert / cake and I'm so glad I decided to look in here in person because would have missed that it fit what I was looking for perfectly!

Rino V.

Yelp
birthday cake (very expensive) was FROZEN inside after 3 hours waiting (they told us it has been been just made) Not one that, we have found pieces of walnut shells inside the cake. AVOID this store

Mariam A.

Yelp
Never going to this place or ever ordering from here again. I requested a refund for an unsatisfactory experience and was met with response that was unsavory. This is by no means to pressure the restaurant to refund my purchase, I no longer want that. This is simply to share my experience with Dulceria. " Merenguitos are DRY MERENGUE" - response from Dulceria. I am well aware and have enjoyed merengue on many occasions. My complaint was for the filling that tasted sour and off. " We don't and never make or made any chocolate merenguito we make merenguito with dulce de leche" - response from Dulceria. I called it chocolate-like, not chocolate. That's my error however it doesn't negate the fact that it tasted sour and bitter. I've had dulce de leche paired with chocolate and so it resonated with me in that manner, hence the chocolate-like comment. " I don't refund because I know the quality I have" - response from Dulceria. Well I guess one can appreciate the pride in ones work despite the lack of hospitality or care for a dissatisfied customer. " Sorry to hear you didn't like your order" - response from dulceria. Thanks for the acknowledgement. I noticed they didn't even mention my comments about the Dulceria Milhoja Chilena, which was a mille feuille LIKE pastry, which tasted stale and focused on my incorrect use of chocolate-like. I did not enjoy my order from Dulceria, in fact I discarded it. I found the pastries I received to be stale with a flavor that was bitter and off. This is my personal experience with this establishment. My first assumption with this establishment was simply that due to the fact that I ordered close to closing time, that perhaps the quality was ruined with time. I had hoped to simply get my refund and try them again earlier in the day. I now have no intention of doing so and have no interest in having my money back. I dislike bad customer service, it's deplorable and unnecessary. The world works better when people are understanding and open to criticism. I had no intention of having a rant and so forth but I don't appreciate the language or tone of the message I received from Dulceria. I hope others have a better experience.

Yelp
I had a lovely visit yesterday to Dulceria and brought home all kinds of goodies for me and my daughters. Daniel is so lovely to talk to and will happily describe everything on the menu. My current obsession is definitely the Milhojas Passion Fruit - wow, one of the best desserts I have ever tasted! And the marraquetas remind me of Chile. Go to Dulceria!! See you there!
google avatar

Nick G.

Yelp
So happy to have this place in the neighborhood. Owners are great, deserts and food is tasty and now they are expanding to the space next door for a restaurant and the menu looks great.
google avatar

Claire B.

Yelp
The challah bread. Oh, Lord, this challah bread is something else. Also good coffee but really all I can think of while writing this review is, "damn, I really wish I had some more of that challah bread right now..."
google avatar

Lucas M.

Yelp
I love this place! Cakes are delicious. I always get sweets from here if I want to impress guests. Ideal for birthdays. The empanadas are to die for!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious and charming new bakery in Harlem! The store was under construction for a few months and I was very excited to see that it would be a bakery. It is small, with no seating inside, but a bright and clean space and great to go pick up something to bring home. I tried one of the alfajores - Portuguese sandwich cookies with caramel in the middle - and a chocolate berry cake. Both were excellent. I would definitely go back - I always peek in when I am walking by and see something new that I want to try. They have breads and a full bakery selection in addition to sweets.
google avatar

Erica D.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and great customer service. Cute place with tons of yummy pastries to pick from. The coffee is incredible. A must try place when in Harlem.
google avatar

Yelp
The best bakery in Harlem plus the guys there are so nice. I ordered a Chocolate and Raspberry Cake for my son's birthday. I'm was delicious. L love their fresh baked bread.

Yelp
Cute, new Chilean pastry shop in Harlem! Stopped by this morning and we were greeted by one of the owners who shared that everything in the shop is made in house. We tasted a couple of pastries and they were DELICIOUS. I will definitely be buying cakes here for future birthdays/events. Coffee is great too!

Jeff M.

Yelp
$8 for a small slice of decent, not amazing, cake. this place is overpriced. that's about all i can say.

Yelp
Delicious and luxurious desserts. I want to try everything. Will definitely become a regular. Yum yum yum!

Yelp
Was really excited when I saw this place pop up. The staff were all really friendly and they have absolutely incredible desserts! Can't wait to try them all.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful. A single baker who makes goodies the old fashioned way. Yummy cakes, biscuits, pastries and the most delicious challah!!!
google avatar

Inna P.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing. We've gone twice in a week since discovering it. The pastries are absolutely delicious and the owners incredibly welcoming. The lemon meringue and dulce de leche tarts are so, so good. So excited to have the place in the neighborhood!!!!

Yelp
Delicious pastries and sandwiches! This spot is a quaint cafe amidst the bustle of FDB. Thrilled to welcome the South American team to the neighborhood. Very high quality pastry chef on site. Gracias, obrigado amigos!

Ree D.

Yelp
Love this place so much. I've been going here since it opened and so glad they stayed open through the pandemic. Their sweet treats are so delicious, especially anything with the dulce de leche. The lemon meringue pies are also to die for. Would absolutely recommend coming here if you're in the area!

Angela T.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite spots in HARLEM! If you haven't tried their EMPANADAS, do it now! REAL HOT CHOCOLATE? yes, please. We also purchased their holiday meals this year and they did not disappoint. We love this place so much.

Marcia D.

Yelp
the food was horrible qnd the empanadas over priced. I asked for heated empanadas and they gave me cold empanadas after waiting for about 10 min. They were disgusting. This places wouldn't be able to sell Anything back at home in Chile. I don't recommend them.

Brian C.

Yelp
Delicious, and fresh pastries, good sandwiches and coffee. I placed an order and was completely shocked by the portion sizes. The sandwich was no more than 3 inches wide, the pastry was bite sized, and the coffee was one size only, a small. The pastry was outstanding, but the coffee and sandwich was very average. I would not waste my money here, the prices are completely outrageous and don't match up to the portions or the area. For 30 dollars I got a child sized lunch.

B Naidoo N.

Yelp
A serendipitous discovery - I was visiting the ups next door. Wonderful and well informed service. Tried their coconut meringue Swiss roll type creation. It was delicious. Also bought a great semi soft cheese and a selection of tasty empanadas. Still congratulating myself on my happy find

G B.

Yelp
Gentrification is a four dollar butter cookie with caramel filling all no bigger than the center of the palm of your hand, which could have been from a jar as easily as from their oven.

D R.

Yelp
I've come here many times for pastries and was so excited when their outdoor sign announced that they had gelato. We brought my son here after dinner on Friday night (6/17) to celebrate the last day of kindergarten. My husband asked if they could taste some of the flavors as it was our first time trying their gelato and the woman reluctantly said yes. My husband tried two but I only let my son try one flavor because the woman was acting as though it was an inconvenience and was standoffish. My son (5) settled on chocolate and on the walk home he dropped it so we promised to take him back the next day. Saturday we returned and he once again got chocolate. When he tried it he said it didn't taste very good. My husband went back inside and asked the woman if we could change it for raspberry since our five year old said it tasted weird. The woman told my husband there was nothing she could do and we'd have to buy another one. Cool, their prerogative. But I just found it to be poor customer service all around. Although when I've been alone, I received fairly warm and friendly service from other people there but that was not the experience I had visiting with my son. Perhaps not kid friendly? Will not return.
