The hyped smashburger isn't the best thing at Dumbo - Review - London - The Infatuation

"Stroll past Dumbo at 6pm and you’ll question what the swarm of people gatherered outside are there for. Passers-by dodge gaggles of Asahi-drinkers to get to the zebra crossing on Bethnal Green Road; bemused regulars at the chippy next door gnaw on saveloys, shaking their heads in disbelief at the pandemonium; and calls of “sorry about the wait” go up as brown bags are exchanged. It’s not a lo-fi hip-hop set from an artist that’s never been seen in public. It’s smashburgers. photo credit: Felix Dol Maillot photo credit: Felix Dol Maillot Dumbo is a Paris import but its crisp-edged patties don’t warrant the frenzy. The burgers themselves are fine, if a little dry, and the potato-roll-meets-brioche-bun doesn’t hold up well. Still, for a portion of crunchy, peppery nuggets (our favourite thing here) and perfect fries, we like Dumbo. And standing with a crowd of people who make jorts look good and one confused dad with his son, is the most fun we’ve had queuing for a burger in London. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna photo credit: Sinéad Cranna video credit: Sinéad Cranna Pause Unmute Food Rundown Cheeseburger The anti-smash people could hold these patties up as evidence of why smooshing meat down isn’t always better. You get two patties but even then, it’s all crust with not the slightest suggestion of juiciness. They’re generous with the ketchup and mustard, though, which sort of helps. PlayMute video credit: Sinéad Cranna Earth Burger While they’re still a mostly moisture-free zone, we found these vegetarian patties to be pretty decent. The addition of shredded lettuce on these (not found on the cheeseburger) was nice too. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Nuggets Not enough people talk about the nuggets at Dumbo, and they’re really tasty. Everything is just a bit better than a sad takeaway version. The tempura batter is crisp, not too thick, and nicely seasoned. The chicken actually tastes like chicken. And the sweet and sour sauce has a pleasingly thick, jammy consistency. photo credit: Felix Dol Maillot French Fries Get the fries. Cooked twice and seasoned by someone who is unafraid of sodium, they’re excellent. PlayMute video credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

YES! Bring back short, simple menus and a simple premise. Only 2 choices for hamburgers: £10 smash cheeseburger or £12 vegan option. I had the smash burger + fries. I didn’t realise they had seating at the back, it’s so cozy! Probably not ideal for group settings. The playlist they had on was very vibes. The bun was soft, the patty crispy, albeit a bit bitter (?), good pickle garnishes. Great portion size for £10 (I was full halfway through), and the french fries at £3.5 are so crispy and taste quite fresh. Would come back for sure.

Great smash burger! Flavour and ingredients are delicious and it’s always fresh and hot. Great fries too! They have a small sitting space in the back but it will be full if it’s busy.

Burger is exactly what it says, a smashed burger. Patty is definitely on the thinner side but it works well with the toppings, wasnt greasy at all,and the bun had a nice sweetness to it. Nuggets were insanely good, as was the sweet and sour sauce! 10x better than McDonalds.

Great. The burger is perfect, crisp edges and loads of flavour. Chips were very good and come with a special sauce that’s nice, although a little sweet. Staff were all very welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a smash burger.

As someone who isn’t really a smash burger person, this was the best I’ve had. Very juicy centre, simple ingredients and crispy flattened smash burger. The meat needed just a little more seasoning I reckon and it would have been perfect. Fries and special sauce with them were incredible! I’d return for the fries alone!

Simplicity at it's best. In a market where we've seen an exponential rose on burger joints, Dumbo has come along and reminded us just how great a simple cheese burger can get. The potato bun is beautifully soft and lightly toasted. The crisp edges of the patty add a great texture. The meat is juicy and well seasoned. Who knew all it took was a couple gherkins, cheese and a well made sauce to make this vibe together, creating a beautiful symphony. I just feel I have already been too spoiled by the more fancy burger joints over the years and can't seem to find the same level of satisfaction from such a well made simple burger like Dumbo's. Still.....I will be returning very soon.

I went to the Paris one a couple of years ago and I can't explain how happy I was when I heard it opened in London, so I came as soon as possible. It's relatively new but already popular, on a Saturday we had to wait around half an hour for our food, we went for a walk and come back. It's only take away. Burgers are as good as the ones in Paris. Chicken nuggets are nice. Fries are amazing, super crispy and soft inside you can tell they have been double fried. For London prices, it's also pretty affordable. Love it!

Came to try this place after hearing lots about it on instagram. Was a little bit underwhelmed as the burger is nothing special. Two super thin smashed patties which mean you can’t really taste any meat flavour at all. Overwhelming flavour just comes from the onions, pickles and condiments. I think this burger would go down well late at night or after a few drinks as it feels like a fancier version of a McDonald’s burger. Small venue with a little cosy seating area out the back if you want to eat in. Not a bad burger but temper expectations as it is pretty average!
