Where to Eat Boston’s Best Dumplings

"Dumpling Daughter pays homage to founder Nadia Liu Spellman’s mother, Sally Ling, of the eponymous Sally Ling’s, an upscale Chinese restaurant on Boston’s waterfront from the 1980s through the early 2000s. Dumpling Daughter is casual, though, serving a variety of dumplings, buns, scallion pancake wraps, rice bowls, and more." - Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

Overall not bad! I thought the dumplings were just okay (they’re mostly takeout only which is tough), but the scallion lo mein and chicken katsu were both EXCELLENT and I would definitely go back for those. Very light and flavorful and fresh, but the dumplings were kinda mid. When they were served fresh at Snowport, it was much better.

Was craving noodles and this was the closest place that popped up. The noodles hit the spot and the southie fried rice definitely had a kick that I wasn’t expecting but enjoyed. The portions of the noodles and rice were great and I had enough leftovers since all the food was for 1(me). I read some of the reviews so I was a little skeptical about the dumplings so I ordered the petite sesame ones to see if it was a hit or miss. I do agree that the dumplings were more doughy like ravioli lol but I did enjoy the taste especially with the sauce. I would probably try other dumplings the next time I order from here. This is probably the best asian food take out that I have had in southie.

Google
Absolutely loved this spot. Everything was super flavorful and delicious. Highlights were spicy chilli beef lo mein, eggplant and crab Rangoon!

Google
Writing this directly from the seat of the restaurant. Dumplings taste like straight oil, no flavor. Got buns which tastes, in fact, like buns ( they came out cold, and the meat cant be described as anything other than mystery meat). The salmon rice bowl tasted and looked as if it was microwaved 2 day old rice, with a frozen salmon filet from walmart. Sauce was terrible too, overall just doesnt taste good. I would avoid this place if you value spending your money on good food.

Google
Sauce for days and flavor to match! Great bang for your buck—delicious, fast, and easily the highlight of our evening. And don’t even get me started on how kind the staff was!

Google
Got the steak southie noodles. The noodles and sauce were great. The veggies were cooked just right. The meat was gross. I’m sorry. Whatever the mystery meat was that they gave me was definitely not steak. Rubbery, fatty, greasy, dark brown and bite sized. My pup loved it tho.

Google
almost everything was nasty. the only things that i’d give a 4/10 were the bbq pork buns and scallion pancakes (hard to mess up). the lo mein tastes funky, chicken inside the dumplings looked basically raw, and crab rangoon tasted like pure sea water. Really hope i don’t get sick from what i tried.

I've never actually been here in person yet. But I have gotten takeout from them multiple times after long exhausting days and it's hit the spot for me every time. I really enjoyed the Southie Fried Rice, and if I'm not ordering dumplings from them then I'm definitely steaming some of theirs that I had in my freezer. The only reason I can't review them higher is because my partner has had the opposite opinion. They've been disappointment and said everything tasted a little too fishy (Something that doesn't bother me). Either way, if you're having a tough day this is a great spot to get some comfort food.

Yelp
Overall rating: 1 star Ordered take out from here and I don't think I will ever again. Food: dumplings, lo mein, and other "authentic" Chinese staples The pork dumplings we ordered had a strange sauce that was spicy, sweet, salty, savory, and SOUR? All at once, it was so odd and messed up my taste buds a little bit. Meanwhile the lo mein was tasteless, it did not have much flavor to it. Pricing: unreasonably overpriced, I'm aware that Uber tends to increase the prices of the food but even online it was absurdly high, I was with a Chinese friend and she had mentioned how she's had better both from homemade cooking and from the frozen section Ambiance: N/A can't comment because I was not at the location Seating & Parking: N/A used ubereats Service: N/A Music: N/A Bathrooms: N/A Final comments: not sure I'll ever visit

Yelp
I was really excited when I heard this spot opened up in southie, but I was disappointed. They do have some interesting menu items, so I have ordered from here multiple times to try a little bit of everything. I really wanted to give dumpling daughters a chance, but I had a mediocre experience each time. For the amount of food you get and for the flavor of the food, it is overpriced. I tried the pan seared pork + napa cabbage dumplings and petit chicken dumplings in sesame sauce, which were both decent in flavor. However, the portion size was very small--I was still hungry even after paying $20 for the food. I also tried the dan dan mien and the grandma's beijing meat sauce over noodles. Both dishes were okay--a little on the sweeter size. If I were to order from here again, I would probably order a noodle dish. I also tried the steamed roasted bbq pork bun, which was also very sweet. I was not a fan of this dish. In general, my experience with the food was the more I kept eating, the less I liked it. I also tried the thai ice tea boba and mango boba. I would not recommend the mango boba, it was very very water down. The space itself has a nice ambiance and the staff are also friendly. I mainly did pick up orders to which the food would be ready within 5 to 15 minutes, so it's quick service. I would recommend you order ahead. Based off the price and mediocre quality, I don't think I will return here again.

Yelp
We ordered a little of almost everything on the menu and found the food to be very good. Nice and spicy as we like it. The Southie rice and noodles were excellent. Service was quick and easy. We tasted a lot of different items and all had our favorites. We will order from Dumplings again.

Yelp
The food here is awful. The crab rangoons taste rancid, the fried rice is bland and contains raisins. Who puts raisins in fried rice? The dumplings are greasy. The sauces are salty. Don't go here.

Yelp
There is no nice way to say this, the food is just really bad. Don't waste your money. I got a noodle dish and a dumpling dish, and went back and forth, continuously debating which one was worse. I had do dress up the noodle dish as there was no flavor. avoid

Yelp
I REALLY want to like this place but they're making it so hard. First time=was sick in the morning. Second time=crab rangoons were SO fishy and such an odd texture. Third time=pan seared dumplings were really soggy, lo mein was suuuuper dry. Officially disregarding this place as an option, gave it 3 shots they totally failed

Yelp
The food was overpriced and my child noticed that they were using their iPhones while handling the food. The location is great, it's the food that needs major improvement. For someone who is so proud of their dumplings, that they would write a book about it why would one try to sell this substandard food? Do better!

Yelp
Food is delicious, just a little pricey. The hot honey fried chicken, is so good and cooked perfectly. (Again, for the size a little highly priced.)

Yelp
Overpriced dog food. Straight up not good plenty of better food all along broadway. Avoid this place. The actual taste of this food ,disgusting!

Yelp
Horrible food!! The worst Chinese food I have ever had! It went right into the garbage. I would not recommend

Yelp
Just felt I needed to vent. Just had a Dan Dan Mein for which I ordered and paid for extras. The purchased additions were Tofu, cilentro, extra Bok Choy and chose it to be Extra Spicy. Though there was a generous amount of Tofu and I did see a sprinkle of cilentro I am confused on the other two "Extras". Extra spicy? It is already listed as spicy but with extra Spicy chosen there was little to no spice at all. Extra Bok Choy? There were TWO bok choy leaves from a small bok choy. Two leaves!! That is less than a bok choy of any size. Very dessapointed with my first purchase from this establishment.

Yelp
I was eager to Try the new Dumpling Daughter in South Boston so I went in for lunch yesterday. I was terribly disappointed by my choices I found the dumplings and lo mein to be absolutely tasteless. And I ordered both orders spicy. The service was pretty fast but they have the register set up to automatically give the order a 20% tip for just a person ringing up your order I think that is a bit deceptive. If I want to tip someone I will do it myself. I have no problems with restaurants doing it to a larger party when you are at a sit down restaurant but a walk up counter service is just deceptive. I wound up paying $26 for an order of dumplings and lo mein which was totally devoid of flavor and do not recommend this restaurant I was very disappointed and would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

Yelp
Expensive and terrible food- bad combination. spicy lo mein has no flavor other than chili oil. i paid for chicken lo mein and did not receive any meat in my dish. southie fried rice is flavorless as well. $34 for both.....go elsewhere.

Harrison H.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from here. Dumplings are okay. Everything else is not so great... I got the chicken wrap and it was unbelievably greasy. The hot and sour soup was inedible and I had to toss it. It had an unidentifiable scent... maybe peanut oil? Seems odd for hot and sour soup.

Yelp
This was by far the most atrocious Chinese food I've ever experienced in my entire life and I've tried a lot of Chinese food. I am all for a hole in the wall. I am all for chain restaurants. I've tried high-end Chinese food and your average hometown Chinese food I wouldn't even give this to a homeless person. There was raisins in my fried rice, and some sort of chorizo in my lo mein. I wouldn't even classify it as lo mein, I've no idea what they're running in that business but it is definitely not Chinese food being served. I have never even done a yelp review I downloaded this app to only give a review about this restaurant so no one spends any more money on it. I can't even tell you how much I regret spending my heard earned money on this foul establishment. I have probably consumed Chinese food 1000 times during my lifespan. I will never forget my experience here if I could give this -10 stars, I would.
