Dumpling Factory - Review - West Midtown - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Coming from the same team behind Northern China Eatery, this spot in Westside Paper makes solid housemade versions of all our favorite dumplings like siu mai, buns, potstickers, and soup dumplings—which are tough to find in the city without heading toward the metro areas. A line snakes around the order counter, and the tiny kitchen often struggles to keep up with the dumpling demand. Even with the help of a robot who delivers food to your table and cheerily tells you to enjoy your meal, the experience (in taste and speedy service) isn't quite as good as its sister restaurant. So order something from the noodle or fried rice menu (we suggest the thick and savory beef noodles) to tide you over while you wait. Food Rundown Beef Stir Fried Thick Noodles A plate is piled high with thick egg noodles, chunks of beef, cabbage, and carrot slivers. This noodle dish is a little on the greasy side and not particularly remarkable, but it’s a big filling portion, so it’s the perfect takeout order for hangover days. photo credit: Juli Horsford Spicy Cold Noodle The best descriptor for this dish is simply its name. And the dish is just fine. Thin noodles sit beneath a mound of cucumbers cut into thin strips. A red chili sauce with a sesame oil base is served on the side so you can control how much of the spicy dressing to pour. photo credit: Juli Horsford Scallion Pancake Would this win the award for best scallion pancake in the world? Nope. But it does what we need it to—it’s flaky with a nice crispy exterior. photo credit: Juli Horsford Shanghai Juicy Buns These are like soup dumplings (but the junior edition). They’re small and don’t have a ton of broth inside. The broth tastes beefy despite the ground pork filling—but that’s not necessarily a bad thing since the more savory beefiness is nice. Pan Fried Pork Buns Get this. We love these handheld buns. A nice little sear on the bottom gives the fluffy, doughy exterior some caramelized flavor. And the little ball of ground pork inside gives us joy—similar to how we feel when we open up a Kinder egg. Pork & Chive Dumplings It doesn’t matter if you get these boiled or steamed—they’re great either way. There’s a ton of chives inside, and we like to fully submerge ours in soy sauce to make it extra salty. You get 12 per order, which sounds like a lot until you’re fighting with your tablemates over the last one." - Juli Horsford

Google
A really cute spot with great food! The only issue we had here was some dishes take a minute to come out. It was always worth the wait. I appreciate the advice when picking out a dish and the options are diverse but familiar. I also really liked the layout and decoration, we feel intimate with the kitchen, but also feel like we got the premium service! Highly recommend if you’re in this part of town!

Google
A-1 premium service, Anything less than a 5-Star is a joke… Our family visited “Dumpling Factory” for the 1st time (Christmas Day) we dined in, My husband and I complimented the restaurant cleanliness, decor and ambiance was so unique very intimate setting for a family, date night, or just a nice evening out! We were seated in a booth close to the kitchen as our 11yr old daughter enjoyed her delicious coconut (Boba-Tea drink) watching the cook prepare her (handmade noodles w/succulent stir fried shrimp platter what a “great experience”… my husband and I are vegetarian so we Order (Cumin Tofu) which is a bit spicy, being I was 1wk post surgery, the chef accommodated my order (no spices) salt & pepper cumin tofu stir fried w/fresh garlic, scallions, onions, red/green pepper was (“Chef-Kissed”)… Again we are foodies & visited many restaurants through out ATL/GA. Dumpling-Factory is a must, your Palate will thank us later!! Enjoy!! ❤️ **Ps. We came back 2 days later!!! (Sat) ~Stir fry (Sweet n Sour) Tofu 10/10 ~Handmade Veg-Buns 10/10 ~Handmade (Chicken) Dumplings 10/10 ~Spring-Rolls (2pcs) 10/10 ~ Fruit Tea (Sweet/Lemon Lime) 10/10 ~Boba (Coconut-Lychee) Tea 10/10

Google
One of the best place in town to get dumplings and pot stickers! And they have the best scallion pancake in town! Crispy, flavourful, large portion, I can eat it all by itself. All their dumplings, buns and scallion pancake are house made so they’re great! Service is awesome too, friendly and accommodative. Plenty of parking space and not crowded at all. They sell frozen dumplings that you can cook at home too. I’m already planning my next time coming back.

Google
Great lunch spot. It was busy when we were there but the service was good as was the food! Loved the dumplings and hot & sour soup! Can’t wait to go back and try more.

Google
The various dumplings we had were delicious. The beef flank hot pot was flavorful and hot - delicious. The robot serving us gave clear instructions as to which dishes were ours. Great friendly service. Will return to eat again.

Google
We really did love this place. Got the dumplings with beef fried rice and an order of beef fried rice. The amount of food you get for the price is amazing. For the dumplings I got a mix of beef and carrot along with pork and chive. I much prefer pork and chive. The amount of fried rice e you get is amazing. If you know you can’t eat a lot you can definitely take some home. Overall the food tasted amazing for a really not bad price. I do regret going to park 27 for fried rice.

Google
I really really wanted to love this place. It’s located in the heart of west midtown. Plenty of parking. The plaza itself is new and modern but empty to the point that it’s depressing. So knowing it’s run by Chinese, we were hoping for authentic food. What we got is beyond disappointing. All 3 dishes we got were bland no flavor. Dan Dan noodle was simply just cold noodle with cucumber (which they did mention only having cucumber but the fact that it didn’t have any flavor was not informed). The pork and chive dumpling was not fresh, it had a weird taste and smell. We were gonna sit and eat there but the vibe inside the restaurant is a take out vibe with counter service. The business they seemed to have were all through delivery company. It’s safe to say we won’t be back.

Google
I understand their menu has changed since we visited but it does not seem for the better. The food was ok, not bad, nothing to write home about. My biggest complaint is that the vegetable dumplings and buns all have shrimp in them so there aren’t any vegetarian options. Now it seems to be more clearly labeled in the ingredients but they are still called “vegetable” which is misleading. The fried rice and noodle dishes had very large portions, but I wouldn’t go here again just to have rice and noodles. I really wanted to try the dumplings but they didn’t have any vegetarian friendly which was disappointing.

Yelp
Dumpling Factory has become a new staple for lazy Sunday afternoons at Westside Paper. Their dumpling combos, which include a side of delicious soup, salad, or fried rice and steamed or pan-fried dumplings, are a great value meal! You order at the counter and sit, collecting your utensils and bowls near the water station. A cute robot will bring you your food shortly after that. Unfortunately, Dumpling Factory had a deal with Elsewhere brewing for a discount on a pint to bring into their restaurant to drink while you ate. Elsewhere is closing at the end of October 2024 (Support them while you still can!), and that was another incentive for us to ride our bikes there and hang out. We will still be back because the food is delicious and service is excellent.

Yelp
i wanted to disagree with the other 3 star reviews SO badly, but this place is sadly pretty mid. can't speak for service because my friend ordered to go for us. my friend loves the other location and has raved about DF, so i was really disappointed to find average dumplings at a city price tag at this spot. we got the stir fried thick noodles with chicken, shanghai soup, and shumai. she said it was a step down from their other location honestly i didn't really love any of the food. the dumplings were good and definitely hit the spot for dinner after a workout, but i didn't find them worth the price. the chicken in the noodles was an odd texture, i ate around it. with elsewhere brewing closing next door, I'm not sure of this location's future. hopefully westside paper will continue to develop and they'll find their groove

Yelp
located in westside paper and will give off date-spot vibes once more shops start popping up in the area. their handmade dumplings and buns are so authentic and packed with flavor. my friend loved the steamed pork dumplings, while i couldn't get enough of the shanghai soup dumplings--so juicy and delish! (this is my FAVORITE) we also tried the pan-fried dumplings and fried rice, which were super filling. great for sharing, so grab your friends and try a bunch of different dumplings together. the lady at the counter was so kind and really attentive to everyone's needs.

Yelp
We ordered egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, pan fried pork dumplings, steamed dumplings and fried rice. I thought the soups were pretty good but really small portions. The pan fried dumplings were good and flavorful, it wasn't too crispy though. The steamed dumplings were pretty good and I loved the chives inside. The fried rice I thought could use more flavor to it, didn't have that wok fried flavor to it but I liked the vegetables inside. I would say this place isn't the typical sit down service restaurant. We were served by a robot and ordered on the kiosk because the cashier was busy. You also have to clean up after yourself. Not sure why there is a tipping system if it's mostly self service. Overall the food and service was okay.

Yelp
When I saw the announcement of the new location I was excited and stopped in because I never get out to the original. This visit was pure disappointment including subpar service. - wayyy overcooked dumplings - disappointing b/c they require you to order so many - fried rice wasn't good; no flavor - no non-soda drinks were available including bottled water

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place during their soft opening, so considering that my review is based upon what can be done better and my experience overall. When we got there, the place was packed and a line. We got in line to order and when it was our turn to order we had a few questions as we were seeking vegetarian options. The cashier did not speak very well English which made it difficult to make a choice. Their veggie dumplings had shrimp in them as mentioned on the menu which was confusing. After making our order, we waited approx. 20 mins before checking in for eta on the food. The cashier never put our ticket in so we had to wait an additional 30 mins for our food. The place itself was super hot inside since there are big windows facing the outside. Overall very disappointed in the service but I understand they were trying to figure it out. The food was very underwhelming. Our noodles were supposed to have tofu in them which was missing. Our dumplings had some type of meat in it so we weren't able to eat it. I do not suggest this place from my experience but giving them grace to hopefully figure it out as the place keeps running. Free parking outside so that was convenient!

Yelp
We went on a Friday night at 6pm and beat the dinner rush. They are a sister restaurant of Northern China Eatery and fairly new. FOOD: Shrimp Stir Fried Thick Noodles ($14.95) - They should rename this to be called Veggie Ginger Stir Fry. You have to literally dig through the veggies to find any noodles. The only thing you can taste is ginger and the dish is very salty. I would not get this dish if you're actually wanting any noodles. Pan-Fried Pork Bun ($15.95) - The bun wrapper was good and decently thin and the bottom of the bun was properly crispy. The texture of the filling was very off-putting however. It was kind of like wet cat food and I couldn't finish it after picturing that. Crab Roe Soup Dumplings ($15.95) - The soup dumplings come in 6 pcs. It was visually good but the taste was fine. I had thought it would be topped with crab roe, but the filling is made with crab roe. These also should be renamed as it had no soup whatsoever and also had the wet cat texture. SERVICE: The workers were all kind, but it was all very very unorganized. You order and then grab a buzzer before you get a seat and it can get pretty crowded when a lot of people are waiting inside for their food. The biggest issue I had was the time it took for the food to come out and the order. We got our "noodles" at a decent time, but we waited for 30min for our dumplings/buns since we understood it was a new restaurant. We started to notice that there was no order and people were just coming up and asking if this was their food and the workers would just hand it to them since they did not know which table it should go to. We ended up getting our food after doing the same and going up multiple times to get the rest of our food. OVERALL: I do not like to leave reviews for new restaurants until I try it at least twice, but there seems to be a lot of the same recurring problems and I don't think they are actually taking time to change it. I hope it was them just working out the kinks of grand opening, but I don't see myself going out of the way to come here and spend money on the food.

Yelp
I hate to give this location a 3 unfortunately. I arrived at 4:00pm and they informed that they were on break till 4:30pm and would not be able to take my order at this time. Not going to complain, it's their first day "officially open" as they have had a soft opening between 1-4th. I placed my order finally around 5pm(decided to give them some time), they only had 1 person taking orders and they all seemed very distracted or pressured. Not a problem. I'm pretty patient and love watching chaos and upset customers. I placed my order for... 1xHot and Sour Soup Duo Combo with Chicken and Corn/Pork and Chive with Chicken Fried Rice. 1xFried Pork Bun 1x Yangzhou Fried Rice. Comes out to around $71 with 20% tip because it's the first day and I appreciate the time. I waited outside for about 10-15 minutes and then decided to go inside. Watching the chaos, I believe the cooks were not going in order. The Manager and I'm guessing one of the Part Timers were switching between taking orders and plating orders and calling them. Instead of keeping some of the items back to provide the Dumplins with the Rice, they were calling orders as they came up and scratching the item off the order tickets as they came out. Because of this, people had to get up multiple times and sometimes the manager went out to the tables to bring out the food if he remembered the order. Around 5:20pm, Auntie came in. She obviously is the one in Charge. She places the Part Timer at the counter, while the Manager is running things. She starts calling out orders and putting things in order. At around this time, there were three groups of people waiting for either a table, a togo order and then me. At around this time, I'm still waiting patiently. Just observing. One of the gentlemen there had the order after me, and was now trying to rush the team because his fried rice was taking so long. He finally gets out around 5:30pm. Then comes my order. First, the Pork Buns had been sitting on the counter in a container now, along with the dumplings from the the Duo combo. There's the Hot and Sour Soup. So we're waiting on the side of Chicken Fried Rice and the Yangzhou fried rice. I already thought the Chicken Fried Rice was done and sitting with the Dumplings. They finally say that my order is next and they are preparing my rice. Great. I drive home and start sorting the order out. This is where things go bad from my point. Everything before is fine to me. The price, it's fine, the service, it's fine, It's the first day and I understand things take time to get in order. Cool. No worries. However, they forgot my Yangzhou Fried Rice. They gave us what I think is considered the "Half Portion" of Chicken Fried rice, which came with the combo. It's still a big enough portion for two, so my roommate and I split it. He got his 12 dumplings, the 6 Chicken and Corn and Pork and Chive. I got my Pan Fried Buns and hot and sour soup. No Yangzhou Fried Rice though. There goes $13.95. :( I start eating. Here is the unfortunate. The buns were mid. Unfortunately, this batch had very mushy filling. This is usually a result of someone mixing the meat too much into a paste. The taste was there, but the texture was off and not like it normally was when I get these at North China Eatery. The Hot and Sour was good however, it was kind of plane. More sour than "hot" and definitely not HOT. Not as good as NCE. The fried rice was not as firm as I'd like as well. The rice was maybe overcooked a little or because of the rush on orders, they aren't able to use cold/room tempature rice, so the rice ends up overcooked. Due to the texture issues with the Buns and missing fried rice, I have to deduct points. I suggest giving them another chance if any of you recently had similar issues. It will hopefully get better over time and as they get used to everything.

Yelp
Food is delicious from the beef fried rice to the dumblings of all kinds defiantly recommend getting the 12 dumblings over the 6 youll want more
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
Service was normal, when we went there were only a few people in the restaurant so our food came in like 15 minutes. The house fried rice was tasty! Pork and cabbage steamed dumplings were ok, lacked flavor. But the soup dumplings really disappointed me. There was no soup! $16 for only 6 dry dumplings felt like daylight robbery.

Stephanie R.

Yelp
We went here for lunch yesterday (10/15) and really enjoyed it. Pretty, open space and you order on a kiosk and food is delivered (as it is freshly made, in courses) via robot to your table. Everything was hot and tasty and the only reason i deducted a star was for the sweet bean paste bun (my usual favorite thing). It was super big (which was a plus), but you have to work your way thru a lot of plain white bun before you hit the sweet paste. I would have liked the bun a bit smaller so you get a taste of the yummy inside with every bite! Will go again without hesitation!

Yelp
Just... no. The woman who took our order was extremely rude, unknowledgeable, and frantic. Told us it would be a 30-40 minute wait for take out. No worries, we grabbed a beer next door and after 45 minutes of no confirmation that our order was ready went over to see what was happening. All the workers were upset and yelling. Over an hour later we had our food in hand. They put the veggie dumplings in with the meat dumplings so I unfortunately ate meat for the first time in over a decade. And the food was not worth the wait. A mixture of cold, mushy, unflavored mess.

GaBriel H.

Yelp
I would leave no stars if possible. Usually they would come take your order at the table. But the woman at the register said " I'm not walking to the tables, so you need to order here". Then our food dumplings came in extremely soggy, to the point they were breaking and had a wet taste. They need to hire better staff if they want to succeed. The original is 10x better then this place. I would not return!
google avatar

Paloma D.

Yelp
Overcooked dumplings and rice. Boiled to mush food. Service was slow and the price is high for the dog like food they serve. Never again.

Jessica F.

Yelp
Dumpling Factory's grand opening was everywhere on IG, but the Atlanta food influencers must have been given a lot of free dumplings to feature this place. Hopefully the issues are growing pains since I went opening weekend, but only time will tell. The steamed and pan-friend buns were good and came out in about 15 minutes. Not the best I've had, but decent for the convenience of being ITP. We had to wait nearly 30 minutes before the stir-fried beef wide noodles and our appetizer cucumber salad (cold dish) came out. The cucumber salad had way too much vinegar. This is a staple appetizer dish and they really messed up on the flavor profile. The noodles were very disappointing. You could probably find better at a mall food court. Ratio of noodles, onion, beef, vegetables was all off, not a lot of flavor, and it was pretty greasy. It was also 82 degrees inside the restaurant and you have to go up to the counter to get iced water. It definitely seemed like they're still figuring out their work flow and felt disorganized. If, and that's a big if, we go back it would only be for buns/dumplings and I would wait a few months for them to iron out the kinks.

Yelp
From the management to staff everyone was so nice and helpful. The manager especially just went over and beyond. The food was amazing. I recommend everyone trying this place. Oh and they played really good music

Ken D.

Yelp
I had a Soup Nazi experience with the manager and was refused service. Nothing like this has ever happened to me. Last week, I was there when the kitchen service collapsed- orders that were already picked up were coming back up and people who ordered a long time after us were getting served. After 45 minutes they served food that was way below the standards you would expect. I posted on Google and they replied and wrote nice note so I decided to give another try. They refused me service when I did. Clearly, the person who replies to online reviews is not the nasty manager who turns away locals.

Angelina W.

Yelp
Their dumplings and potstickers are amazing!! It's clearly an art that they've mastered. They have house made hot and sour soup which is the most amazing I've ever had. Their service is quick and the restaurant is not too loud. Every time we visit Atlanta we make sure we stop by.

Ryan W.

Yelp
Don't usually leave reviews, but was surprised when I got home to see the low # of stars for this place. Stopped by after work to get some Shanghai soup dumplings. The best soup dumplings I've ever had were in East Asia, and I had yet to ever find any in Atlanta that even came close...until I came here. Very, very delicious. I just wish they also had East Asia's prices as well!

Faith B.

Yelp
Found this place on Instagram and thought to give it a try. fan-freaking-tastic. we tried the shrimp, pork and chive dumplings, chicken and corn dumplings, chicken noodle, house fried rice, and shu mai. Absolutely wonderful, fresh ingredients, obviously hand made. Will absolutely be back. Must try in Atlanta

Anna G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. The pork shimp and chive potsticker was very flavorful and the soup dumplings were wonderul. Would recommend.

Danny Y.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Waited about 20 minutes for the food so it's not too bad. Shanghai soup dumpling was juicy and flavorful. House fried rice was very tasty as well.

M B.

Yelp
Really good food! Definitely worth trying. Working out the kinks in their first few weeks of opening, but everyone working there is trying their best. They deserve more patience from guests!

Kelly D.

Yelp
Went in today with a friend for lunch and got the soup dumplings and cold noodles. They were great! The same amazing quality as their Buford location. Will definitely be back!

Miranda W.

Yelp
I went today thinking that it would be better to wait until after the grand opening to come so that the restaurant would be able to sort through any issues, training, etc. However, I was wrong. We came in at 12:05PM and didn't put in our order until 12:45PM. The line was not long (maybe 10 people) but they took a long time to get the orders in and then their POS broke so they stopped taking orders. Which may have been a good thing so that they could catch up with the orders in the kitchen. We were the first to order after the POS came back up. At first the food started coming out pretty quick since like I said before they got caught up on their orders while their POS was down. But then at 1:05PM, we were still waiting on two dishes. The cucumber salad, which in my opinion should've been one of the first things to come out and our shangai soup dumpling. Keep in mind, we had 3 orders of it. 2 pork, 1 chicken. We were still waiting on the 1 pork... which is odd since the other order already came out and so many people that came after us had theirs already. We saw people that ordered after us but were done and leaving but we still hadn't gotten our last two items. We had to go up twice to get the last items. It finally came out at 1:22PM.. I think the staff needs to be more on track with their orders. They looked confused and seemed like they forgot about items again each time we went up. I know some others were also waiting for their remaining items to come out too. I'm pretty sure they just forgot about ours and gave the items to other tables. We also considered asking for a refund on those items so that we could leave. The place was insanely hot, we were already irritated about the long wait and food not coming out, the heat didn't help. Also, their condiments basket on the table was disgusting. It looks like they don't wipe it every night or morning. It was so sticky on the outside. Next, the food was terrible. Frozen store bought food from the grocery store taste better. The only thing we liked we the potsticker. The fried rice tasted like white rice - no taste at all. The thick noodles consisted 80% of onions and cabbage with barely any meat and noodles. It was also tasteless. The bun and steamed dumpling were pretty bland and the dough was so thick and mushy - over steamed. The shangai soup dumpling dough was the same and the soup inside was very salty with no flavor besides that. Our overall experience was terrible and I will not be back. With all the issues they could've at least given a discount or provided like a free soda fountain drink. I've read some other reviews and saw that some people say it's good or too salty... it seems like their quality control is lacking and the service, food, experience ranges widely depending on when you go... my friends went yesterday and also had a terrible experience. Had I known about their experience, I would have tried a different place instead of wasting my time driving 50minutes 1 way to try this place in Atlanta. They need to work on many improvements.
