Where to Eat in Manhattan’s Chinatown

"Chinatown’s newest noodle and dumpling spot is heralded by a bright red awning, right over the Grand Street station on the D and B trains. The interior is quite comfortable, done up to look like a forest, with a Buddha peeping out of a knot in the tree. Stir fried udon, soups, and soup dumpling are specialties, encompassing Shanghai and Taiwanese standards, and half the menu is devoted to bubble teas and related beverages." - Robert Sietsema

The Best Soup Dumplings in NYC | Eater NY

"This Chinatown newcomer right over the Grand Street station on the F is decorated like a forest, and it devotes the first part of its menu exclusively to soup dumplings. There are six varieties that come five to a steamer in the following permutations: pork, pork with crab, spicy pork, chicken, truffle pork, and garlic pork. The dumplings are thick skinned compared to many, but they come is a rainbow of colors." - Robert Sietsema

Absolutely loved this place! The food is not only delicious but also beautifully presented—every dish felt like a work of art. The interior decor is full of traditional Chinese charm, creating a warm and authentic atmosphere. The staff were all very friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. I’ll definitely be coming back!

I want to seat in the bird cage next time. Food is delicious. I enjoy the fried chicken and soup dumplings. Service is great. It’s empty when we got there but then fill up quickly.

Tried the Beijing Peking Duck Bao (2 pieces) with milk from the takeout kiosk. It was a good deal at $10.99, but the quality didn’t quite match the value. The duck skin wasn’t crispy, which was disappointing since that’s usually the best part. There was also too much sauce, which overpowered the flavor of the duck. They warmed it up slightly before placing it in the bun, but it didn’t do much to improve the texture. Decent if you’re curious to try it once, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to order it again. Would still want to try the full menu.

The dumpling flavours are good but the value is not. I would recommend several places in the area over this place. Very clean and bright interior. The black pork pot stickers are very tasty. The cucumber salad is not very well seasoned.

Located at the corner of Grand and Chrystie Streets, Dumpling Story is a pretty restaurant. The interior is atteactivr with lots of foliage, a tree with a large trunk at the entrance that looks real and comfortable seating. Menus are on tablets. When I had passed DS earlier I saw a picture of Peking duck baos which caught my eye. I am very fond of these. After an appointment and the bus taking too long, I decided to eat here. The tablet had lots of choices. I chose the baos and pork soup dumplings. Two baos came first and the duck skin was flabby. Ideally the skin should be crisp. The duck meat also was not up to par. I thought longingly of the superb ones at Shanghai You Garden in Flushing. The pork soup dumplings had thick wrappers and little broth. This was disappointing. I had wanted to like this seven month new restaurant which had beautiful decor including the unisex restroom but it didn’t translate to the cuisine served.

We had a really good dinner here, and it is a strong 4-stars. We had the scallion pancakes (slightly oily but really tasty), sweet & sour soup, wonton spicy dumplings and the stir fried broccoli. Note - bring your own vino, beer or whatever as they do not serve alcohol :)

Many times, we have passed the Dumpling Story at NW corner of Chrystie and Grant Street. First thing caught our attention is the fresh baked Shanghai pork moon cakes. Accidentally, we walked into the dine-in today, very nice and cozy décor. Found a Valentine's meal for 2, and decided to try it out. Food taste authentic, well done! The Yang Zhou fried rice is above the average, but still has some room to upgrade. Totally understand Fried Rice is typically not as easy as it sounds. 3 tips of secret for outstanding fried rice is the overnight cold rice, smaller size shrimp without being over cooked to maintain it's juicy and tenderness, and last but not the least is the fresh lard adding natural unique pork meat flavor boost the appetite. Well, this is absolutely the place we will revisit next time in town.

Lovely atmosphere in the heart of chinatown. We were seated very quickly and were able to enjoy a variety of items! They had an iPad for us to order from so we could order more things at anytime which was nice and convenient! Started with wonton soup which had a fantastic broth taste that leaves your stomach nice and warm :) tried the noodles, shrimp dumplings, vegetable dumplings, and scallion pancakes all of which were very delicious. We got some chili garlic edamame to go which was also good. They also gave us an adorable complimentary pudding at the end, shaped like a rabbit/mouse! So cute!

Yelp
A nice restaurant in comparison to Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. Similar menu items with the Shanghainese soup pork buns and noodles. I was ecstatic that this place arrived in Chinatown so I don't need to trek myself all the way to Flushing. Now that this place is closer to my home, I find it really convenient to order xiao long Bao seamlessly in Chinatown. I ended up ordering mini pan fried pork buns and one Peking duck bao from this place. The mini pan fried pork buns were very tasty with sesame seeds and chives that added a lot of flavor. Wontons were fried really well making it crispy when you take a bite. The Peking duck bao tasted kind of weird though like it was smoky, which was not what I expected. I did not realize that it would be that smoky. The interior is very nice with a big tree as you enter inside with booths and family style set up tables for large groups. A very family oriented vibe. Going to come back for more of their main dishes and truffle dumplings! They have self checkout kiosks and a bench in the waiting area so you don't need to stand and wait forever to be seated.

Yelp
We stumbled upon Dumpling Story after finding out the line for the other dumpling shop we intended to go to was out the door and seating was limited. Dumpling Story, if the name of the restaurant doesn't give it away is a restaurant that serves dumplings. Soup dumplings specifically. The restaurant has a modern aesthetic with an IKEA ambiance that resembles something that one would find in Williamsburg or Astoria. You order your food either by scanning a QR code on the table or through an iPad that they'll bring to the table. The variety of dumplings offered is impressive for the size of the operation. There's the traditional pork soup dumpling which had decent flavor and a good amount of soup, but the skin lacked the rubberlyness that one would find at this price point. Simply put, if you're expecting to find Din Tai Fung quality and precision, you're in the wrong place. What they do, do well is homestyle Shanghainese dumplings with a twist. The Peking Duck and Pork dumplings was a nice twist with a decent amount of flavor. The braised beef noodle soup with the sweet potato noodles had a nice contrast between sweet and salty. The pork and leek wonton soup was a disappointment, lacking the nuance and precision needed to elevate the dish. In fact, somehow they were able to include a large piece of leek into one of the dumplings. The ordering process while simplistic lead to some confusion if you're not careful. They tried to upsell you into getting the meal, which includes a braised pork bun, a drink and dessert with an order of dumplings. If you're there by yourself for a quick meal then that's fine, but if you're there trying to try different variations of their menu, it's an unnecessary obstacle that really turns off the customer. Also, I understand this is Chinatown in NYC, but the price point felt a little high for the portion sizes and while they do execute most of the dishes proficiently, be aware that this is a tourist and hipster destination. If you're looking for an authentic soup dumpling experience where all the Asians go to, this will not be the place, but if you're around Chinatown and are craving dumplings, you can do worst than enjoying a meal at Dumpling Story.

Yelp
The ambiance is very nice and bright. Bench seats are not too comfortable if you are taller and bigger size. Food is average. I would assume that the dumplings will be the highlight of the meal. They are very average. The pork and garlic with the green skin doesn't have any garlic taste and the skin is tough. The regular pork dumplings are better. The skin is thinner and more soup. The duck buns are also average. Nothing special. The stir dry noodles are the best thing we ordered. The noodles is chewy and very tasty. The best part is the free jello-like bun. It is free when you spend $30 or more. Will not return but worth a try.

Yelp
Ordered through the outdoor kiosk The server handing my order was nice and added napkins and a bag for my one bao. I didn't find the bao tasting fresh or good. $3.00 is a good price if all you need is a super quick bite I don't think I'd visit or recommend to anyone

Yelp
What a great little dumpling spot. Came here for a quick lunch because I was craving soup dumplings, and this place did not disappoint. It's conveniently located right by the M train. I initially thought you order at the mobile kiosk, but realized only after I'd submitted my order that it was for to-go orders only. I apologized and asked a server if it would be okay if I had the order here, and they were able to switch it. It's a casual atmosphere with communal tables along with some private booths and tables along the sides of the restaurant. Each table has fresh ginger, chili oil, black vinegar and soy sauce ready to be poured onto your dumplings, which I appreciated. My soup dumplings came out fairly quickly, and were everything you want soup dumplings to be. Warm, soft, chewy, juicy and flavorful. 10/10. No notes.

Yelp
4 out of 5 but nothing special A safe choice especially for tourists and American crowd I ordered to go on a Friday night so that might have affected the taste It's like Nan Xiang Express in Midtown West but more hip because of the loud clubbing music and bright-colored decor This is a true sign Manhattan Chinatown is become Flushing Chinatown--chains, chains, chains and no more whole-in-the-wall places Food 3.75 out of 5 Rice cakes with snow vegetables and shredded pork On the bland side, which is good for me A bit soggy even if it was dine in-- it lacks what Cantonese people call "wok air" because it was not fried long enough Price 4 out of 5 $12.99 is honestly some of the best pricing you will find in Manhattan Chinatown for this dish It follows the lower Flushing price point Service 4 out of 5 The staff is younger and/or more polite You do not get that screaming, cash-only, and get-out-as-soon-as-you-are-done eating vibe Cleanliness 5 out of 5 Did not use their bathroom but you can tell by the way the food is packaged, the mosquito nets over the condiments and disposable utensils at each table, plus the appearance of staff

Yelp
Great food!! Loved the ambience and service was 10/10. Good vibes all around and food was fresh and delicious. Definitely a place to spot by at.

Yelp
I came here with a party of 5 and we were served very quickly. Server was very accommodating to one of us who has a nut allergy. We all agreed the food was delicious and enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant over all.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with two other friends and was seated right away since it wasn't packed. Orders were placed on your phone after scanning the QR code on your table so they know which table to bring the food to. We ordered a regular xlb and a truffle xlb. The skin was kind of thick but it held all the soup in and the truffle was very truffle. Also ordered the mini pan fried dumplings which were truly mini/bitesize, the Shanghai noodles, and the red oil dumplings. The decor was cute but the booth seats were very tight fighting. Overall, it was an ok meal. I would rather go to Shanghai place for the quality and price. Probably would not go back.

Yelp
Nice new place in Chinatown that will definitely attract tourists due to the nice design of the place plus the service here is very nice. However, the food is just okay for Shanghainese standards. The Kau Fu and jelly fish weren't too bad and the beef noodle soup was okay but I was so disappointed with the soup dumplings and this place can be costly. It is nice that it opens late so definitely come check it out if you need a quick Shanghainese fix late at night.

Yelp
Came here after the festival happening near by. Food was good, we have the garlic pork soup dumplings and chicken. A few pan fried dumplings and some interesting drinks. I loved my mango passionfruit drink & my fiancé enjoyed his sago drink although he accidentally left it when we were leaving. The soup dumplings were decent, I liked the different toppings they had including the ginger and chili flakes. There's no waiter service really, you order through your phone after scanning a qr code, but it's kind of neat because it's linked to your table and the waiters get to help out when needed. They come with the bill and bring the food/drinks. If I'm in the area, I'd possibly be back.

Yelp
Tina was an absolute gem!! The food out of this world, but her service really made our entire experience. We were celebrating the Mid Autumn Festival, and we couldn't have chosen a better place. We got a variety of dishes, garlic cucumbers, beef scallion pancakes (MUST get), panfried mini pork baos (ABSOLUTELY MUST get), beef udon stirfry, garlic pork soup dumplings, crab soup dumplings, wonton soup. Tina helped us finish with a milk pudding taro "bao" which was such a treat Will be back for sure, and we will definitely be asking for Tina to take care of us!

Yelp
Dropped by on a Sunday night after some drinking. I'm guessing this establishment is new. Few things on the menu they ran out of or didn't have at the moment. Ambiance is very welcoming. Service was good. Food came out fast and hot. Soup dumplings were a bit small--5 for around $8/9. They were tasty for sure. I feel like you can probably find a spot on the same area with bigger soup dumplings. Flavor was great. No alcohol on premises. Dumplings did its job and we left very happy. Def drop by and see for yourself.

Yelp
Dumpling are really good but the noodles are the highlight. Perfect and freshly made.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant when they had 2 promotions. One is free dumpling pudding when you spend more than $35, and the other one is free duck soup dumplings if you spend more than $45. Lemon-infused water serviced on the table. $1 extra if you want tea. Order your dishes via the QR menu. Cute interior decorations.

Yelp
We had the duck bao, wood ear mushroom, and pork dumplings. Honestly the wait and anticipation for this place did not make the dining experience worthwhile. Even if there were no wait, there was hardly any meat in the duck buns, and the portions kept my sister and I hungry all night lunch. We normally go for the crab but with the crab being an ostentatious $4 more, my sister asked we get pork instead. These are hard times, and I'd add an "lol" to that statement, but we're not exaggerating. With congestion rates for commuting into the city and inflation at an all time high in the last 10 years, we rarely dine out anymore so this was slightly disappointing. I didn't think to take a picture, but to my pleasant surprise my sister and I scored a some luck with the bbq food cart outdoors that filled our partially full stomachs with their $2-3 meat and snack skewers. that was bomb. I would trek through the pits of NY subway hell through January all over again just to eat those one more time. fortunately, tomorrow is already February. happy Lunar new year!!

Yelp
Long shot - Someone lost a watch here on Jan 1, 2025. We found it. Get in touch, message me here with make. Would like to get it back to rightful owner. Food and service was great! thank you!

Yelp
while the taste was delightful, I was quite disappointed with the portion size. $10 wonton soup, shrimp inside is smaller than my fingernail xD. For the price, I expected a more substantial serving. The flavors were on point, but the tiny portions make it hard to justify ordering them again. If you're looking for a hearty meal, you might want to look somewhere else. Staffs are warmly and Place is good and clean enough.

Lily L.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch as it was the first spot we noticed. There was no wait and ordering was done through an iPad. I tried the black fungus appetizer, chicken XLB, vegetable wontons in chili oil, and beef noodle soup. Unfortunately, the soup lacked flavor, and the XLB skin was so thick that there wasn't any soup inside. Overall, the food was just average. There are better options available elsewhere. This is definitely a story you don't want to remember.

Yelp
Was excited and then saddened. So sorry to write a bad review. This spot has an array of different restaurant turnovers. They just seem to can't get it right. Xaiolongbaos menu reads plentiful like a replica of Nan Xiang's menu, but disappointing. We tried an assortment of dishes and 4 Xiaolongbaos. I'm just not a thick skin dumpling person and there's a slight after taste. **** They also have a bubble tea shop on the side HaaTea. Their name is purposefully to confuse people with Hey Tea that's opening up around the corner.
google avatar

GarGuPi L.

Yelp
A new Shanghainese restaurant just replaced a Cantonese cuisine version. This is a prime corner location, so surprised so many restaurants didn't last that long. With this new venue, the menu reads like a Nan Xiang XLB Express menu...as in a truncated version of a true sitdown restaurant. Prices are market values, nothing too cheap nor too expensive. Have we reached XLB saturation yet? Before eating XLB was a luxury, but now, it's like a burger, it's a common dish to serve anywhere. Right now, this 'Story' is in soft opening, with an outside kiosk for ordering take out. XLB are never meant to be eaten later, so best to choose their noodles or appetizers if eating a la minute isn't an option.

Yelp
Great food, great prices. They've got good vegetarian options! We got the vegetable steak dumplings, snow peas, wontons in peanut sauce. 8.5/10. Fast service too.

Gen H.

Yelp
Soup dumplings and Shanghainese rice cakes were excellent. Peking duck was the worst I've had (soggy/not crispy at all). Guess I should have known since it's a dumpling house but the pics out front made it look good. Short wait was good.

Emily S.

Yelp
I thought this was pretty good. I got delivery on DoorDash (expedited) and it came within about 30 minutes. I got the pan fried mini pork dumplings, pork soup dumplings, and pork wonton soup. The mini dumplings were my favorite thing and I'd get them again, though they were not crispy by the time they got here - I re-fried them and they were delicious. Soup dumplings were OK, they only give you 5 and one or two of them were already popped by the time they got here. Good size. Soup was large but not a lot of flavor in the broth or the wontons.

Catherine C.

Yelp
Very good food and service! Especially the milk pudding, it was so cute and delicious.

Chantal H.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing ! Very adorable and satisfying !!! Fast service ! Very clean ! Very beautiful atmosphere

Erin L.

Yelp
Food is great it was a enjoyable experience and the best part affordable in New York city

Ed M.

Yelp
The food was great and the bathroom is really cute! I ordered the pork soup dumpling and the spicy pork soup dumplings and they were both equally delicious! The staff were very nice and food came fast and hot! Def recommend!

Eric T.

Yelp
The services was terrible, my soup was bland, and there were fruit flies. I would not recommend this place.

S L.

Yelp
The food quality is bad . I ordered a duck soup noodles. The duck pieces they gave me is all the left over like Necks and bones $14. At the beginning they even refused to change it , after they changed it , still bad because all the pieces is frozen cold . This place doesn't care about their customer or reputation at all. I wish I took a photo is horrible .

Sarah R.

Yelp
5/5 best dumplings ever!! The flavor was delicious and the serving size was great. Highly recommend

Sammi W.

Yelp
Food was not bad in terms of taste but I've definitely had much better soup dumplings in chinatown. For the price, the portions are small. $8-9 for only 5 soup dumplings. The pan fried baos tasted good but lacked the texture of an actual bao. It was more like a soup dumpling that was fried without any of the soup inside. Service was fine. Waiters were attentive but also seemed to want us out ASAP despite the lack of customers. The place was clean and tidy and has good air conditioning.

nicole p.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious. Beautiful atmosphere, very calming environment. And the service was great. Everyone was polite, super considerate, and quick with all the orders and requests. Definitely making this a regular spot.

Tiffany M.

Yelp
I loved everything I tried. The truffle pork soup dumplings are incredible. Also, don't underestimate the simplicity of noodles with scallions. So good! The restaurant was cute and decorated nicely as well. I will be back!

Federico S.

Yelp
good food, not greasy compare to the same resto. staff were very friendly and precise to what you're ordering, knowledgeable. when you're in the area of chinatown new york, don't forget to stop and eat in this restaurant.
