Dun Huang

The food was OK. The atmosphere was pleasant. The service was pretty good. I ordered Fried Rice with shrimp, fish with cabbage soup, pork ribs, and the fermented egg for our dessert. I liked the fried rice the best out of all I ordered. Fermented egg can be more fermented.

I find the food here just fabulous and the prices very fair. There is currently a prawn special and it's so fresh as if it just came from the market. Great presentation and attention to details like serving at an optimal food temperature (i.e., hot dishes not scalding, cold ones not like right out of a fridge, but just right). Staffers aren't there to be your friends but instead are very efficient. Well done!

Zha jiangmian was fantastic. So was the signature Lanzhou beef noodles. Twice cooked pork was a little on the fatty side. String beans were good but a bit on salty side. Space is limited so a loud group next to us made our experience less than ideal but overall we enjoyed it. Would definitely go back just for the zha jiang mian and beef noodles. Price was good too

Came to this restaurant with a friend who is from Northwestern China so you know from the get-go this place has to be pretty amazing! Really enjoyed eating signature beef noodle where you can choose 5 diff noodle options (fun!) and it's 9 bucks. Quality and portions were great. Also beef Tenderloin soup is a must! So tangy and flavorful but its 18 bucks and not that big so you should share it with others as an appetizer. Will def come back again.

We had high expectations of this place because of the positive reviews. The staff and service was good but the food was not worth it at all. The skewers were undercooked and they slapped too much turmeric on it. The popcorn chicken was okay, nothing great. I’d suggest to take tour money elsewhere. Not a good experience.

Delicious foods here! They served with large portion for each dishes, spicy but yummy. Would like visit again and try more dishes~ it was too full to two people but we still finished them all. Also recommended the hot milk tea here, tasty and good for a cold autumn night ;)

I absolutely love the food and service here.

The noodle is not hand pulled. The noodle is above the average but it is not authentic Lanzhou noodle because the base soup is not too light. And they automatically add chilly oil which is not good because it should be the customer to decide. You can choose the shape of noodle from thin to thick. The lamb kebab is good which is juicy and tender. The atmosphere is excellent. The price is decent.

Solid casual spot. They're right next to a boba shop and can order boba from the restaurant! I first got food delivered from here then dined in when I was in the neighborhood. Everything has great flavor. I would totally come back to try their other dishes. 5/5 Eggplant salad - very flavorful, eggplant was cooked well. the flavoring is so strong that it made my lips feel funny from how salty it was. I would order this again. I want to eat the leftover sauce over rice, mix it with noodles, or use it to marinate meats. 4/5 Mung bean noodles - the texture of it was softer than I expected. It fell apart more easily than I am used to with other noodles. 5/5 Chicken salad - GREAT flavor. the sauce is great, a little strong even. would be great with rice or mixed with noodles. I used it to marinate other meats last time I had this. 5/5 Silky wide noodles - fun texture flavorful. my only bit of feedback is that it's a little too oily though I guess the noodles need that to not stick to each other.

After a day of community event walking and early voting, we decided to get something to eat at Dun Huang. The place is peaceful, modern and clean. The orders were: fired pork dumplings, chicken, rice and ribs. The food was fresh and the service was timely.

Dun Huang is consistent and is good for dine in or take out. Good noodles and other dishes like mapo tofu and coca cola chicken. Some of the dishes are a little salty like the green beans but overall it's a great casual spot. The service is very quick since you order through ChowNow via a QR code at the table. It can get a little crowded but it's a solid spot and reasonable prices too.

Came on a Monday night, good amount of people but seated quickly. Got the N1, lanzhou soup with wide noodles. So good, noodles super chewy and extra long for slurping. Broth was light and delicious, a bit on the salty side. We also tried the tomato grilled fish because literally every table had ordered this and it was AMAZING. A whole fish grilled then simmered in a rich tomato broth, it really hit the spot.

Dun Huang's food is very authentic. The noodle soups are great. However, their service is terrible. There is no greetings at the door. The waiters are not smiling. They let me wait for a long time before taking the order. When I asked a question, the young waiter showed inpatient and he was rude. My question was helped by a costumer. The ambiance is crapping and uninspiring. At the bill time, a waitress showed me the bill on an iPad, and she expected me to tip 20%. She got really mad when I tipped 16%. I would give the food 4 stars and the service 0 star. Even this place is 5 min. from where I live, I will never go back to it again.

Pretty overpriced and bland, not very flavorful. The jiajiangmian was very salty. Didn't have much options in the area so came to dunhuang. Was a bit disappointed

Service is like shit. The server got the wrong order, did the bare minimum of making the right food, and had zero care of the extra time that I had to wait and get my food. Even when I tried to complain, the other server was like didn't give a fuck. At least listen to my complaint and figure out a solution with me?

I would give them 0 stars, the food was uncoocked, vegetables too, I complained but they absolutley did not care, AVOID THIS PLACE there are much much better chinese places then this.

Food 5/5 A very wide selection of authentic Northern Chinese dishes. The noodles were the right amount of chew and flavor, loved the soup. The cumin lamb was a highlight, super tender and the spices tingled the right amount in my mouth. The mung bean noodles were very refreshing, while the braised lamb shoulder was also super tender, you can taste how much effort and time was put in cooking it. I will definitely come back again for a casual meal with friends. Interior 4/5 Pretty simple wooden interior setup, unfortunately, the chairs we sat on were for a long table and did not have backs. My back was not that happy. Service 5/5 Because we were celebrating someone's birthday, they were kind enough to store our huge cake in the fridge until we finished our meal. Friendly and helpful staff.

A fine stop for authentic Chinese food in the area, according to my Chinese friends. If you're a Columbia student or parent looking for a taste of home, this will do. Service was prompt. Ambiance was quintessential Chinese noodle and light fare joint. 7.5/10

Very neat little noodle spot. I had the non spicy version of their beef noodles. The noodles where very good, but i found the broth very salty. (But maybe you are not supposed to drink the broth.) Had the pork dumplings which were very good as well. You order through your phone, so the server interaction is quite minimal but they were happy to answer all my questions. They get quite busy for lunch with minimal tables so expect a wait.

Solid northern Chinese food! We got the Dunhang Spicy Noodles, Szechuan Style Sauteed Pig feet, and original noodles. All of them were tasty and reasonably priced with decent portions. You can choose what type of noodles you want but I chose the thick wide ones bc those are my fav and they were perfectly chewy!

Delicious delicious chinese food. I got the special with wide noodles and it did not disappoint. The broth was so so flavorful and the noodles were nice and chewy. Order was ready quick and food was super affordable. I wish there was more meat/veggies, however that's just a personal preference.

There are few dishes that ward off the winter cold as well as "big pan chicken", "da pan ji", or "Monstrous Plate Chicken" as Dun Huang calls it. Skinless chicken thighs are stewed with plenty of sweet, warm spices (star anise, cinnamon), dark soy sauce, red chilis, and potato. The resulting soupy, spicy, hearty dish warms you from the inside out. Ordinarily, the dish comes with thick wheat noodles; Dun Huang didn't send any with our order so be aware that you have to purchase separately! The version here was solid: chicken thighs remained tender and juicy. Although there was an appropriate amount of heat, it derived completely from the red chilis; I didn't detect any mala from peppercorns at all, sadly. It was too salty to eat alone, so I cut it with some rice we had on hand. Another main course of "Sliced Fish or Beef" ($20.00) was also disappointingly mala-free, but otherwise fair. There was plenty of sliced fish in my version (my protein of choice), but without the infusion of mala heat, I wasn't really feeling the copious amounts of red chili oil that was used to dress the dish. (All that oil is wholly authentic, by the way, used like a tadka in Indian cuisine, to "finish" a dish.) I liked that the dish was not even the slightest bit "fishy," but it was so oily and salty that my favorite part was actually the cabbage and mung bean sprouts for their palliative effect. This dish something you'll want to eat in moderation with a LOT of rice -- which you need to purchase separately. The Pint of Beef Broth ($3.00) was dark, warmly spiced, and somehow still hot despite the delivery distance. It was (like everything we tried) too salty, but the salinity was easily remedied with a bit of boiling water. As someone who always loves the broth better than any other part of a soup, this pint of straight-up broth was gold. A Woodear Mushroom Salad ($8.00) was nicely dressed with vinegar and red chili pepper, and the woodear mushrooms retained a pleasant bite, but they were of course too salty. A final side dish of Marinated Braised Beef Shank ($9.00) was lusciously tender and fragrant. More fat was sliced into the dish than what many home chefs would include, but that (and the oversaltiness) were the only flaws there. Overall we enjoyed this lovely meal and the pleasant staff on the phone when I called. And we have a heckuva lot of leftovers to contend with. Tomorrow, I think I'll boil some noodles, add the leftover broth and beef shank, and pretend like I made dinner.

I would give it four or five stars if they service was better. The food was great. Large portion and pretty yummy. It's authentic northern cuisine. The location is great and I can see many Columbia students eating there. But the service isn't good. I wanted to use the check in coupon from Yelp but they said: it's expired then left. It was rude and unprofessional.

Ordered jia jiang mien and N1 beef noodle soup. Classics that should be safe to order. It was ok, not particularly flavorful or compelling. My noodles were over cooked and clumped together like a doughball. Somehow the traditional northern Chinese flavors did not stand out and I was left with food that was only mediocre. I have to say I was disappointed.

Great lunch for cheap (at least in UWS). Many bowls are $9 and are full of noodles. Decent amount of vegan appetizer options as well. A regular spot for Columbia students as well. The meat portions are small according to my friends who had those dishes, but for the value, this is a great filling meal. Will return again!

The food here was great. Highly recommend getting a veggie and a meat option to share! Loved the mix of the chicken dish with bok choy which helped take away the spice from the chicken! The service was fast & the environment was very calm.

Food taste okay but a bit greasy. Service is fast - literally just 5 min to get all my four dishes ready - I assume it is prepared.

Very fast service! White rice is not included with entrees and costs $2/bowl, which is unusual. Food was decent.

I still love their extra wide noodles and their clear broth Lanzhou noodle soup. However, during our last visit, the food quality was inconsistent. The broth in the extra bowl of noodles ($3) was too salty, and didn't match the bowl it was accompanying. They overdid it a bit on the ma-la flavoring as well. Additionally, their prices are very odd. Grilled fish for $38 when a bowl of Lanzhou noodles is $9? A plate of cabbage and black bean for $13 when a side dish of cabbage is $5? The wait staff could use some training as well. They kept bringing more dishes out and squeezing them on to our overfull table rather than cleaning up our old empty dishes to make room for the new dishes. They also forgot to put in our order for Lamb Rice Pilaf. All this is definitely forgivable but it just made me realize that this type of experience does not warrant five stars. Looks like they're settling into the 3-4 star territory and that sounds accurate to me.

Upper 3/ 4 Rating! The wait and service were good, real fast turnaround when it came to getting our food. Burger: the meat was yummy and nice cook on the Huns but wasn't as flavorful as expected? Maybe spicy beef would have been the better choice of two meat options but tasty! Just wanted to add chili oil or Sriracha onto it. I had the Lanzhou Beef noddles can only speak to that! But the noodles were really nice, fresh, good chew and consistency. I got the extra thick/wide one. Chili oil wasn't too overwhelming but just enough. Pretty great given price point of $9!! It was a decent meal!

I'm in a wheelchair, and when my partner and I came to eat at 6pm, only one table was occupied. A large table in the front room would have been perfect for us--lots of legroom and no blocked aisles. If the restaurant had filled up, we would have been happy to share it. But the tall skinny man at the cash register insisted we sit at a tiny table in the back room, so cramped there was little space for my feet and my wheelchair would have been an obstacle to anyone else trying to enter the room. Do you want to eat at a restaurant that shows contempt for its customers?

So this location was open about a month ago and so far it's the first branch I been to(apparently they have 3), I was pretty hungry so I got 4 apps and 2 main courses to try the best out of it with my maximum stomach capacity. First, their plum juice tasted really good it's like it's fresh from plums(the color was black so I am sure they cooked it in someway), it's more on a sweet side than the sour. All my apps were great,thumbs up for the fish rolls(cigarettes size)and eggplant salad ,they were all in proper portion(not too much,not too less) so it's a really a good way to start,I would recommend 2apps for an adult. I had the cumin lamb it was" okay"nothing surprising meat was deep fried and the cumin seasoning,just be aware that it doesn't come with rice so you need to do the extra order. The Lanzhou ramen I do recommend, it's like a bowl of brisket pho soup with ramen noodles instead of the rice noodles,and you can choose the size of noodles you like, the traditional is the regular size though! Service was great, they checked the tables once in a while and my water glass was never empty even though I drank lots of water(the food was spicy)! All the food in this restaurant that listed "spicy" is moderate spicy, like you can get the kick of the spice but not giving you runny nose -- I personally do like that and I left a happy person! The music wasn't what I expected in a Chinese restaurant like this....4.5 stars overall,it's not really fair to give them a 4 so I left a 5.

Liked their noodles! Both soup noodles (the classic one) and the dry ones are good. Also liked the chicken/potato dish (added noodle to it). Also, feels like a fast food place. People come and go. Though I felt the the environment is pretty nice to sit and enjoy the meal.

I came here after class with a friend and we shared four dishes (I came to taste he came to eat) we tried three Cold noodle dishes: spicy noodle, orange noodle and one simply called cold noodle, and the traditional noodle dish. Of the four dishes, I'd come many times just for the traditional noodle dish. It makes the other dishes forgettable. The spicy noodle and cold noodle were both spicy and cold - both were good but the spicy noodle was pretty salty. The orange noodle tasted similar to mayonnaise mixed with candied orange peel. Wasn't something I was used to but I'd eat it again. Service was quick, and the size of the restaurant is deceiving by the narrow entrance. There's a larger seating area down the hall. Can't wait to come back and try more!

I was just browsing on Seamless looking for soup options and came across Dun Huang. Given its good reviews, I decided to order from here. And Traditional Lanzhou Beef Noodles in wide noodles for only $10?! I was so surprised with its huge portions and unbelievably amazing flavor. This dish consists of freshly hand pulled noodles in beef broth with marinated beef slices topped with cilantro and radish. It was pretty dang good. I liked how they weren't so stingy with their beef; it was cooked perfectly and was so, so tender. If you're craving authentic beef soup noodles, I'd highly recommend Dun Huang. Huge portions, affordably priced, very flavorful with a little kick of spice!

Me and my friends literally visit this one every week and try new dishes everytime. And we never failed so far. We always order one noodle and one dishes with either pork, lamb, chicken, or beef with two bowls of rice and it costs less than $15 each for three of us to make so full. Perfect balance of flavors and a variety of choices! I'm just glad to have this kind of restaurant nearby.

This shouldn't have a 3.5, this is a very good authentic noodle place. My favorites are the double fried chicken, the black bean steamed cabbage, and the signature spicy noodle soups. Maybe try something new and don't blame your boring palette because this place is very good.

I came up to this location of Dun Huang with some friends for a Friday night dinner, and though the place is small and frankly, inefficiently designed, we were luckily able to get a table right away. Dun Huang's menu pulls mainly from the northwestern quadrant of China, featuring the Uyghur dishes that I came to love while studying in Beijing. Dishes like the 羊肉串 (lamb skewers), 爽口木耳 (wood ear mushrooms), and the 红烧牛肉面 (beef noodle soup) invoked strong nostalgia, tasting like more delicious versions of the admittedly very cheap eats I enjoyed in the hutongs and at the cafeteria. The 大盘鸡 (big plate chicken) was very different from what I'm used to - almost no heat or cumin flavor and instead a bit sweet, and it actually reminded me of Japanese stews - but it was still very, very good. The noodles were clearly homemade with a satisfying chew. My friends love Dun Huang, specifically this location since it's generally less busy than the downtown locations. I'm so happy they shared this place with me - this kind of cuisine is not easy to find in my city, and it was a real treat to take a walk down memory lane and have a chance to eat generally well-executed versions of dishes I used to have every day.

When I was in China, I always go to the grilled fish restaurants. It is good to have that similar flavor here in NYC. It is really tasty! If I must complain something, it can only be that the fish is smaller than the one back home but the price is more expensive(you can get double with the same price in China). Don't forget to ask for rice. They go really well with the sauce from the grilled fish. We got the spicy flavor but as a person who can never handle spicy food, I would say it is not spicy at all. We also got Coca Cola chicken and Bok Choy for the sake of our health :) First time trying coke chicken using breasts instead of wings. They are sweeter than the normal coke chicken I got before. I always like sweet food so I really enjoyed it. But for those who hate sweetness in their meat, heads up about this dish.

Great noodles and flavorful soup. It's a simple concept to take a bowl of noodle and put in a soup base made from a great blend of spices and you have a winning recipe. The noodle is so delicious that they have a super noodle bowl challenge. You have 30 minutes to finish a supersized bowl of their noodle. It'll cost $30 but if you complete the challenge you will get $30 in vouchers for next visit to spend. It's not for the faint of heart or stomach. Best to come really hungry if you want to face the challenge. Their noodles come in many sizes, so no matter if you're a wide noodle lover or if thin is in for you, you'll find a right fit for a good slurp. Their lamb skewers aren't bad either. Definitely seasoned well and quiet appetizing.

We came here on a Thursday night and were asked if we'd mind sitting in one of the shared tables by the entrance. I responded "no," but upon going to the restroom, I saw there were plenty of tables for 2 available. So that was weird. Although the shared table was fine, our seats were right next to the beverage refrigerator. So every time it was opened, the light shined in our faces like an alien spaceship about to land and abduct us in some cornfield. The other odd thing was that after we placed our entree orders, the waitress asked us "what rice do you want?" There was a little box on the menu that said rice was an extra $2 per bowl but the way she phrased it made it seem like they came with the entrees. Had we known we'd be charged for it, we wouldn't had gotten it. For the entrees, we ordered the Spicy Popcorn Chicken and the Spicy Crispy Eggplant. Both were fried perfectly but both were too salty. I downed my entire glass of water and it still wasn't enough to slake my thirst. Nor did any server come back to refill it. So service post order is non-existent. If you come here, don't be adventurous and stick to the noodles since that's what they're known for anyways.

I came to this place on a winter afternoon. It was not busy. The two waiters at the reception desk completely ignored me for five minutes. It's ok. I just took a menu and started browsing myself. They were intensely engaged in a conversation about their working schedules. I ordered. Waited at a table. Almost dosed off. Finally I asked another waitress if my order was ready, she took the bag that had been sitting at the reception desk where the two waiters still stood. I thought it was no big deal as long as the food was good. Lo and behold... When I opened up my food, IT WAS VERY SAD. A half bottle of almost COLD soup with five pieces of beef and five pieces of sliced radish. The noodles were STICKED together in a TINY box smaller than my palm. I had to microwave the soup. I had to tell myself "hey, don't be too sad. At least you've got something to eat". But this place I will not come back to again. You can just go to Xi'an Famous Food for better taste, larger portion and better price.

Came here on a rainy night and the restaurant was busy. Many of the items on the menu looked spicy and we don't have a high tolerance with spice so we both ordered the Lanzhou Noodle and had the eggplant appetizer. My boyfriend got the thin noodles for his Lanzhou beef noodle and I wish I did the same thing instead of getting the thick noodles. The thick noodles were very hard to chew and were all different shapes. The thin noodles were softer and the texture was overall a lot better. There was only two pieces of beef in the soup. I was not surprise because it was about $8 for a bowl. The eggplant was tasty, but like some other yelpers have mentioned it was too salty on the bottom. It was very garlicy though which I really like. If you cannot get down to Chinatown I do recommend coming here for beef noodles, however it cannot beat Chinatown of Flushing's beef noodles. Also there aren't that many options if you do not eat spicy!

Did someone say chewy, wide, thick noodle doughiness? YES PLEASE! I consider myself a noodle-y person, and I thought the Original Lanzhou noodles were great. Price is $9, but if you get any of the other noodle dishes they'll be more expensive. Noodle quality was 4/5, bonus points for extra chewiness. Beef was pretty mediocre, 3/5, a bit dry. Ask for chili oil on the side, would definitely recommenced adding it to the broth if you like a kick of spice. For dessert we got the crispy glue pudding. Yummy, although I was surprised to find they're basically tang yuan (aka fried sesame balls) and there are only 6 of them. You can choose your noodle type: thin, regular, thick, wide, extra wide. I've tried the thin/extra wide, and definitely prefer the wider ones. Cozy interior, fast service, and no wait on a Tuesday evening. Will definitely be going back!

Quick fast food with great taste. Highly recommended for anyone in the area needing a quick bite. This is more casual dining scenery.

No matter how the food here is good. The attitude of the server is really bad. We came two people to eat. And it was quite early, all the tables were free to sit. And he ask me to sit in the very corner. I ask to sit in the middle cause of the lighting. He say all this sit are reserved. That's kinda funny, anyways the main problem was the ATTITUDE!!!!! He was yelling at me in the middle of the restaurant that he can't share password of wifi. Will never recommend to dine here. Or you'll be facing this kind attitude. Nothing to say about the food, it was pretty good.

Got the N1 special for myself and shared the monstrous chicken, lamb, crispy bread, and pork feet with a few other people! Thought the food was really decently priced and very flavorful. I asked for extra spicy on my noodles and I didn't really taste anything. However, the service was great and noodles were nice and chewy. Would definitely recommend

I came here a while back with my class as a way of celebrating the end of the year. We ordered quite a lot of stuff, since we were a party of 6. And yes, gratuity was added on automatically since we had 6 people. We ordered like a ton of stuff... we got the mo crispy flatbread, the monstrous plate chicken (this is not a very good translation of the actual name in chinese, pls fix), the eggplant salad... I would say that the only dish I wasn't wild about was the shredded potato salad, which was WAY too salty. they should still continue this dish since i think it would have otherwise been good, but just tone down the sodium levels... Overall I think this place is great. I don't know how it compares to the same kind of food from China (since I have never been to dunhuang in China), but this place I think is pretty good relative to some of the other options in new york. The flavors here are quite heavy, but I really like that, and while it is spicy, it's still unique from some of the things you might get at a sichuan restaurant?

For the most part, everything we ordered was pretty good. Only two problems which resulted in the loss of a star: 1. it was super cold in the shop, like they don't like heat. 2. My noodles were undercooked. After awhile, they reached okay capacity, but i had to let them sit for awhile. Anyway, we each ordered a noodle dish and shared the cumin lamb something or other. I went with the Beef Noodle Soup and it was pretty darn good. The only negative was the aforementioned undercooked noodles. The broth was pretty flavorful and the beef was definitely on point. It was super tender with delicious flavor. I would eat a plate of the beef by itself if i could order it as a side. The Cumin Lamb was also good. It came with some flat fat noodles underneath, onions, random veggies, and then riblets of lamb heavy in cumin. It actually had very little burn/spice, but the spices were delicious. I would order this again, i just wish there were more meat on them bones.

I'm complaining due to a take out order that was completely not what I ordered. First off, I have been to Dun Huang previously and had a wonderful experience. Their Spicy Wings are great. So once day, I placed an order on Uber Eats to have some delivered to me. What did I actually receive? I got regular wings with absolutely NO seasoning on it at all. They completely forgot the "spicy." No salt, no pepper even, NOTHING. I have disgusting, tasteless, dry wing. So I called, for them to rectify this issue. No help at all. Best believe I will not be supporting this establishment.

I'm always looking for a good noodle place in manhattan so that if I'm running about, I have different options. The prices here are good but the extras are lacking in terms of the price. Today was my first time trying this place, I had the Lanzhou beef noodles with extra beef and extra noodles. The portion size in terms of the noodles were great but the beef, not at all. $3 more will double your noodles and $4 more will double your beef but the amount of beef is so little to begin with. The beef in the broth must have been about 4 thin slices and the extra beef was the same. It was disappointing in terms of the amount of beef to the point where I need to reconsider even bothering with this dish again. Overall, the place is great but doesn't stick out enough for me to have this place come to my mind first on places to go.

It is ok but not extraordinary. The noodle came not fully cut and kind of cold. It is understandable that we came in quite late and they are about to close. But not sure will try them again... service coule be better
