Chef Nik Forsberg's Pittsburgh Travel Guide | Bon Appétit

"I find Duo's Taqueria — the Duolingo cafe where my friend Marcella Ogrodnik is the chef — to be unexpectedly excellent: the menu leans higher-end and very seasonal Mexican, the Duo bird on the menu is goofy but I don't care because the food is consistently so good, and the chef is clearly talented." - ByWilder Davies

Freshly made and flavourful guac. They refilled our chips after we finished with our first round. The burrito was absolutely delicious too and I’ve never tasted such a yummy green sauce that came with it. Went on labor day and overall a pleasant experience. It was overpriced in my opinion but worth a try

Duos is located in East Liberty. I the guacamole was freshly made. The flautas were good too. The goat birria was delicious very flavorful, it was served with five of the smallest tortillas I’ve ever seen, and toppings, and you build your tacos. The menu is kind of small not many choices, everything I ordered was tasty. The prices are high, the portions are small, but overall good experience

Yes, you read that right—Duolingo, the language learning app, has a Mexican restaurant- Duo’s. And surprisingly— It’s not just a gimmick. Duo’s delivers authentic flavors in a warm, modern space that feels like a curated escape. The staff was welcoming, the cocktails were elevated, and the overall vibe was inviting—definitely built for groups, date nights, or anyone chasing a polished experience. I came specifically to try the suadero tacos—after eating my way through LA’s street taco scene, that cut has become a personal favorite. Unfortunately, they had just pulled it from the menu. I pivoted to the Al Pastor, and it was solid. Nice flavor, good execution. But here’s my honest take: the tacos are street-sized and priced like fine dining. If you’ve been in the taco game for real— and enjoy Spanish/Latin culture and food— not just riding the “Taco Tuesday” wave—you’ll know what I mean when I say— you’re going to Duo’s for the experience, not the value. The food is authentic, yes. But the pricing— Not so much. It’s A la carte. Which pulls away the true authenticity of Mexican / street tacos. Would I return— Maybe, if I’m in the area. It’s worth visiting once just to say you did.

First, definitely ask for Megan. She had wonderful recommendations and described the food in wonderful detail. Next, the FOOD! Everything we had was fabulous. The tostada is a great introduction to their housemade tortillas and guacamole with a lovely thin slice of Ahi Tuna and sesame. It's extremely fresh and a must try. The chicarrones are also housemade and come out WARM. The berries is wholly indescribable, like a warm hug. It has the perfect amount of bite and smokiness. If you're willing to experience goat, get it here as it showcases all of its strength. Even the side of black beans usually a forgotten accoutrement, was delicious with pickled red onions. The accompanying salsa added heat and enhanced flavor. I did run of tortillas long before I ran out of birria, but that didn't dampen my enjoyment. The kanpachi is good, but the pickled jicama on the side is the real star. You must try the tamal de cacao. The tamal is masa and cocoa with whipped cream infused with corn, it is a corn desert but in the best way possible. Also the aguafresca(hibcusus pineapple) was extremely refreshing. The flavors melded, but it wasn't too sweet. The margaritas were also good, with the perfect ratio of tequila.

Did you know that Duo's Taco is actually in the Duolingo building (yes, the language learning app!) and owned by the same people? Fun fact! I really liked the interior and overall atmosphere—very cool and inviting. The service was great too—everyone was polite and courteous. We ordered guacamole and salsa as appetizers, and both were delicious. I also tried the pineapple hibiscus drink, which was just okay—not bad, but not my favorite. As for the tacos, you get 3 for $13, which isn’t bad. The tortillas were corn, handmade in-house, and absolutely delicious. My only critique is that the tacos felt a little small—I wish there was a bit more meat in them. Overall, though, a good experience. I’d go back!

I’ve been using Duolingo for years so imagine my surprise when I was invited to eat at the cafe with my aunt… the goat birria is a 10/10! The self construction makes me even happier. The horchata was also amazing! The service was really nice. You have to try it out! The guacamole was a nice surprise! We added extra lime and it kicked it off ☺️

Had such a great experience at Duo’s - the service is amazing, the ambience is great, and the food is fantastic! We didn’t have reservations for the night, but got seated at the full-service bar. The guacamole y totopos were great - the chips can be refilled which was great since the portion of guacamole was gigantic. We ordered the zanahorias (carrots) which were sooooo yummy - the carrots are so sweet and the beans gave it great balance. We also got the tacos estilo baja with the oyster mushrooms (mayo omitted) which were also very delicious. With the addition of refried beans on the side, this was a great meal for two of us! The mango agua fresca was also great! Appreciated the many vegan options, which are clearly marked on the menu, as well as other dishes that can be modified to be vegan. The service here was also very attentive and the staff gave great vegan recommendations! I’d highly recommend checking out Duo’s for a great dining experience! Cheers to the staff for the great service as well. We’ll definitely be back!

Duos PGH is hands down one of the most special spots I’ve visited in Pittsburgh. From the moment I walked in, I felt genuinely welcomed. The vibe is unique modern yet cozy with an attention to detail that clearly shows their passion for what they do. The food was absolutely delicious. Every dish was flavorful, beautifully plated, and made with fresh ingredients. You can tell the menu is thoughtfully crafted to offer creative and authentic options. I especially recommend all! The service was top-notch. The staff was kind, attentive, and truly cared about making sure we had a great experience. It’s rare to find a place where you feel this well taken care of. Duos PGH is more than just a restaurant it’s a place where great food, outstanding service, and a relaxed atmosphere come together to create something memorable. I’ll definitely be coming back and recommending it to everyone I know.
