I love Mexican food, but not familiar with Durango-style specifically. Was excited to try this place considering the chef's accolades, but this place has a long way to go to improve.
The restaurant was well-decorated and nice inside, but service was very slow and I'm assuming that's because they are understaffed. It seemed like our waiter was rushing around a bunch and spread thin. The cocktails were decent, nothing special. As a vegetarian, the menu is already extremely limited, so I was annoyed they didn't have the Veggie Albondigas available. The waiter said they were out and he didn't think they were popular anyways. Which is different information we received from the manager who said the chef was still working on it and it just wasn't available yet. If they have disposable paper menus, I don't understand why they just don't take it off the menu until they DO have it? Seems like a simple fix.
The Flauta de Papa were ok, again nothing spectacular. My friend said the same of the Aguachile de Camerón. The Cauliflower Zarandeada was like licking the inside of an oven. Just overpowering smoke & char with nothing else going on to it. Super disappointing. My friend who eats meat said it was alright, but as a vegetarian, not what I'm looking for.
The manager was sweet to stop by and check in on us. He apologized for things and took care of our dessert, as well as bringing out a side of rice and beans for me to try, which was thoughtful, especially since I was still hungry after not really enjoying anything. Those were very good, actually. The highlights were those and the dessert, which was interesting and unique. The buñuelos on top paired with the other flavors almost tasted like Captain Crunch cereal which I kind of enjoyed.
If they added some more veggie options to the menu, I might stop in again and give it another shot. Especially after they've worked out some of the growing pains of a new restaurant. So maybe my opinion will change and I can provide an updated review. In the meantime, wishing them luck!
