12 Best Places to Eat and Drink in Frederick, Maryland | Eater DC

"Dutch’s Daughter is a bit of a Frederick institution, having first opened its doors in 1984 (the restaurant has occupied its current location since 2000). The name — coined by owner Eileen Gideon — pays homage to her father, “Dutch” Onderdonk. Whether you’re visiting for brunch, cocktails, or dinner, you’ll find the same friendly service that has kept the restaurant popular for over four decades. Go on Fridays and Saturdays for its famous 16-ounce prime rib, or enjoy classic favorites like chicken Oscar and lump crab cakes." - Lulu Chang

We really enjoyed our lunch there. The atmosphere is "dinner-like" dimmed lights, "heavy" old interior. There are 2 areas - one a little more formal with table clothes on tables, and the other with more casual seating. The food was great: we had soups, steak, tuna and kids meal. We are yet to try dessert, we got it to-go. Steak and tuna made to perfection - NOT overcooked. Steak, tuna and dessert portions were huge and worth the price. But what impressed us most is the service - not sure if everyone was like this, but our server Brandon was just excellent - just the right amount of conversation, with a lot of attention and little details that make a big difference in the overall experience! Recently, it has been rare to see this level of service at the restaurants of the same level. Very pleasantly surprised! We definitely will be back!

Relaxing fun atmosphere with great staff and excellent food. The steak, prime rib, crab here is top of the line and mouth watering. You can chill downstairs in a more relaxed lively vibe or have more of an intimate dinner upstairs or parties, vip rooms in other areas. This is like a castle of wonderful food and drink. Must try in Frederick with that old school country southern vibe.

Don’t sleep on Dutch’s takeout! Super impressed by the food we got, from the quality and quantity. The prices can be kind of intimidating, but there are some things on the menu that are reasonably priced. (Or you can splurge!) We got the blackened chicken Alfredo with mixed vegetables and macaroni and cheese (meal comes with two sides) for about 33$. It was 5 large tenderloins of chicken that were super soft and very well seasoned. They almost melted in your mouth, were so delicious and tender. The Alfredo that came with it comes on fettuccine which was perfectly al dente. The sauce itself was very good, buttery and creamy. What was surprising is how big and yummy the Mac and cheese was. Super creamy with a crispy cheese top. Definitely recommend. On top of everything, they give you (I believe) house made bread with cinnamon honey butter. Perfect addition to mop up all the extra Alfredo sauce. 5 stars will definitely order again!

This restaurant was recommended by a local-ish person. We rarely venture out of downtown when we visit Frederick, but we went for the Sunday Brunch on our way out of town. We didn’t know what to expect other than being told the Crab Soup was very good. We called for reservations and they got us in quickly. We were quite surprised how big the place is, and were impressed with the attention to detail with it being such a large place. Even the landscaping in the parking lot was top notch. The crap soup was indeed incredible with good hearty meaty crab. And the crab omelet was not stingy one bit on the big chunks of crab. Everything had good flavor. Not having frequented buffets in quite a while and being more familiar with Lancaster, PA buffets we were quite surprised by the quality of everything. I was happy that there were plenty of options that weren’t gluten, though the biscuits and beef chip, the French toast, and the raisin bread all looked very tempting.

I went to with two other people and everything we ordered was phenomenal. The appetizers, drinks, and the entrees. Everything was amazing. Pictured are the appetizers, we were so excited to eat our meals we forgot to take pictures of the meals.

We are downstairs in the "dungeon." Food was superb. Fantastic appetizer selection and the crab cake was fantastic. Fresh squeezed grapefruit crush was also delightful.

I loved our dining experience. The restaurant was beautiful with several fireplaces, intricate wood decor, and a beautiful table setting. We ordered the coconut shrimp paired with a marmalade sauce that was inventive and tasty. I had the crab cakes with a baked potato and salad with lemon honey dressing. Every bite was tasty with the right amount of flavor to make the meal delightful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this steak and seafood dining experience.

Stopped in for our first visit having been told we should try this place. Had an early reservation for lunch, walked in and were quickly escorted to the Dungeon, which is a bar/dining area in the basement of the building. The whole place has a really cool, medieval vibe, very clean and spacious. Our server, Jasmin was first rate, she gave us just the right amount of attention and we wanted for nothing. She gave us great recommendations on some of the menu items. The spinach dip was delicious and the Chesapeake crab/chicken sandwich we took apart and it was more like a dinner entree and really good. Our party of four ate for $75 which astounded us for the level of the meal. Absolute 5 stars all around and we'll be going back soon.

Yelp
Food, service plus the ambiance of all the dining rooms all outstanding! I highly recommend Excellent beyond belief. Go now. Enjoy!

Yelp
If you've never been to Dutch's Daughter in Frederick, MD, you need to save your pennies and treat yourself to a delightful evening. We celebrated my husbands birthday there and it couldn't have been a more perfect evening. Our waiter was awesome; he was attentive and genuinely friendly but not intrusive. Our appetizers and meals were simply top-notch. The sad thing is, we get the same exact meal every time we go because it's always that good! We were just talking the other day about what excuse can we use or make up to go back to celebrate something? We finally came up with "let's celebrate the five year anniversary that we made settlement on our home"! Done!!!

Yelp
I searched for a good restaurant to celebrate my birthday and stumbled upon this gem. Everything was great, from the service and the ambiance to the food. They have different dining rooms named after family members. Each room has a distinct look & feel. We had a little wait time before seated, but nothing too long. We were finally seated and greeted by our waitress, Skylar. She was delightful, helpful with food & drink selections, and attentive throughout our dining. Everyone was friendly, polite & down to earth, from the staff to other restaurant patrons. 10 out of 10, I would recommend! This is now a favorite spot for me!! Since this was our first time at this restaurant, we ordered several appetizers and drinks. We had the following: For drinks: Sparkling water Ginger ale Chocolate Martini - tasty Pineapple upside-down martini - tasty Appetizers: Cream of crab soup - I loved it!! Fried Zucchini - I was not a fan, and I love zucchini. They were not fried hard enough, and the inside seemed like they were sauteed too long before frying, so they were mushy Tempura fried asparagus - fried perfectly & was tasty Spinach dip - was good! Hot & spicy shrimp - were tasty, not spicy to me, but had great flavor The fried calamari - was good! For our entrees, a few of us went with the Lighter fare (smaller portions of the same great dinner options) The crab cake was paired with two sides. One person had the French-cut pork chops, and I had the Dutch broiled seafood platter, which came with a Lobster tail, crab cake, crab imperial, shrimp, and scallops. I paired it with a twice-baked potato and Caesar salad. We all enjoyed our meals, but we took most of it to go because we were stuffed with appetizers. Pros: Love the decor Delicious food Ample parking Tasty drinks Great attentive staff Cons: Fried Zucchini (may have been an off night)

Yelp
The brunch might be suffering from over-popularity. We went yesterday after church to celebrate with a small group of 6. Despite our reservation, the Sunday brunch was clearly slammed. For the first time ever (in dozens of visits), they had us wait downstairs in the main lobby. After a bit, they sent us upstairs where we checked in again and waited a few minutes longer before being seated. We have enjoyed this brunch on special occasions for years, and it hasn't changed a lot, though we felt some disappointment. For one thing, the service at non-brunch dinner and lunch visits is always impeccable; the server training and motivation is plain to see. At brunch yesterday, cheerful and helpful but much more basic. The food has lost a step or two. We're restaurant people, and very familiar with the tribulations of steam table buffets, so we've always been pretty pleased with what Dutch's is able to do with the format. Yesterday, despite the high volume of diners, a lot of it was dry and meh. The salmon, which we always get, was dry and hard to eat; the familiar Dutch's chicken was similar, and the pan was pretty picked over besides. Their breakfast sausage links were odd, not what we expected at all. Even the coffee, normally great, wasn't very good. Several of us love that cream of crab soup, though, and our party--young and old--found plenty to like among the dessert offerings. This visit was a little more expensive, like many things: up to $42.95 a person now. We love Dutch's, but it's looking like their Sunday brunch has gotten too popular and hit some limits.

Yelp
The building itself is so beautiful and a joy to walk into. I can't ever say enough good things about this restaurant. It's an easy process to make reservations by calling. When we arrived, we were quickly seated. The brunch is ALWAYS amazing! The crab dip, French toast, Carved Prime Rib, Vegetarian Pasta, Dutch's Chicken, vegetables, and everything else is always so flavorful! I was able to order a caramel iced coffee which was brought from downstairs somewhere! It was soooo good! My husband and son had the Blackened Honey Glazed Salmon and absolutely loved it! The staff is always so helpful and welcoming.
google avatar

Preeti H.

Yelp
The food is consistently flavorful every time we have come to this restaurant. We always have leftovers and the menu has so many options! The service is impeccable and the ambience is nice. It's formal in the restaurant and in the Dungeon it is more casual. It has a nice tavern feel and during Christmas the decorations are absolutely beautiful. I can't say enough about their honey glazed salmon.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants to visit I've never had a bad meal here Every waiter that I've encountered was lovely I've sat outside on the patio, inside on the first floor, and in the dungeon and the service was great, no matter the section. My favorite dish to order is the crab imperial. They have two sizes for it, which I like. I also regularly order the crab imperial with a steak. I've never had to send a steak back and they're always cooked at the right temperature. This restaurant is pretty far from me but I still make several trips here throughout the year.

Yelp
Our friends wanted to treat us to lunch and took us to Dutch's Daughter. This was such a stately and elegant restaurant. What was most enjoyable was the quiet atmosphere. It was so nice to be able to sit and talk and actually be able have a conversation without having to raise our voices. As the British would say, "It was so civilized." The dining room was quite beautiful. The Sweet Potato muffins were to die for - I could have made a meal out of them. We enjoyed the Crab Cake sliders with onion rings, Dutch's Burger with onion rings, Cobb Salad with Chicken, and an Oyster Sandwich with Sweet Potato Wedges. The only disappointment was that the Cobb Salad had anchovies in it - not a pleasant surprise! When I mentioned it to the waiter, he did not offer to take it back to the kitchen. For dessert, we shared a huge Snapper Ice Cream Pie. Three in our party ordered coffee, and we were surprised that our server never offered any refills. All in all, we had a very pleasant time together.

Yelp
Visited twice within a week for lunch. The sweet potato rolls were amazing. We had the Crab Cake sandwich and the Fried Oyster Sandwich and thought they were among the best we had ever had. The second visit, I had the seafood salad, which, don't let the term salad fool you...it is a large salad and probably close to a pound of crab and shrimp. Very good. the Service was on point both times--friendly, prompt, and often performed functions like refilling beverages without anyone even needing to ask. Really some of the best wait staff I have had in a a long time. The atmosphere is classy without feeling pretentious. We will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
Sunday brunch at Dutch's Daughter was fantastic! The food was amazing and the service was just as good--Amir, our server, was friendly and attentive. I especially loved the crab soup and the crab omelette--both were absolutely delicious. My only concern was with the plates, which were on a warmer that was way too hot. Both times I grabbed one, I nearly dropped it from the heat. Aside from that small issue, Dutch's Daughter is a must-visit spot if you're in Frederick!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in the Frederick area. Been there several times and have never been disappointed. It's a large establishment but I prefer the Dungeon. It's the lower level with a dark warm atmosphere. It's not the least expensive place to dine but good things come with a cost.
google avatar

Yelp
The place, the crowd, the crab cakes & chowder. The seafood platter, the ambiance of fine dining aura in the air

Yelp
I was in Baltimore for an Orioles game this summer and visited a friend's house in Locust Point before heading home on I-70 W to Ohio. When I visit Maryland (I grew up and went to school there) I usually try and stop somewhere to get uncooked crab cakes that I prepare at my house the next day. It was a Sunday afternoon game and a lot of the usual places in the city were closed or off my route. Imagine my surprise when I asked my friend where to get the crab cakes: Dutch's Daughter, she said. And it's in Frederick on your way home... best in Maryland she said. Frederick? For crab cakes? Best in Maryland? She assured me yes... So I stopped by, ordered my cakes and sat down and had a bowl of crab bisque and a glass of Chardonnay while I waited.... Well I kid you not when I tasted the bisque I involuntarily moaned it was so good. Easily - and I know in these reviews often people exaggerate the "best" things they've ever had - was truly the best crab bisque I've ever had. Wow, in Frederick.... What a treat and a nice pit stop off of I 70. Service was super flexible, friendly and accommodating. They put my cakes in a foil tray with ice to keep them cool for the ride home and I was a happy camper. Dining rooms are beautiful and the long bar downstairs has an old school feel that's super pleasant. Highly recommend I'll be back during my next trip down to visit my family.

Yelp
We had the tuna, steak, and several appetizers--everything was absolutely delicious, and the service was truly impeccable from start to finish.

Yelp
Great service great food and awesome atmosphere. Will definatly be going back and recommend as an awesome place to eat

Yelp
What a difference a server makes. This evening Michael was our server and he was phenomenal. The meal was paced correctly and could not have been more delicious. Crab dip best ever, filet served perfectly at medium rare, crab imperial was all jumbo lump. Chicken Oscar amazing, moist tender and topped with jumbo lump crab meat and perfect amount of hollandaise sauce. Michael deserves much credit for turning our opinion from meh to wonderful. We will now definitely go back for dinner.
google avatar

Caryna F.

Yelp
Their crab cakes are the best I have ever had. And that's really saying something, since I am a total crab cake maniac. They serve a freshly picked, broiled Maryland crab cake. I recommend getting two. It's amazing. I strive to create crab cakes this great in my own home. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
This was our first time here, when pulling up to the restaurant it was very well decorated. While walking in there were people coming out of the restaurant with large bags, I thought they had just picked up togo orders. The hostess sat us in the room on the left there was no one in that room or server came over at the same time we sat. She took our drink order and we opened the menus to see what they had to offer. My wife and I both were extremely shocked at the prices very expensive! The waitress came back with our drinks and explained the portions are very big, we needed more time but we would like a bowl of the cream of crab. Our soup came and it was very good had big chunks of crab, would order again. There was a small plate menu, 2 medallions of filet mushrooms onion gravy and twice baked potato I ordered and my wife had the cod fish with the potato. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out medium I didn't send it back because it was very tender and with the mushrooms and onion sauce and potato the fish was good 2 large pieces, well now I know why everyone has bags coming out of the restaurant. I ate half of my meal with ate half of hers so we had enough for the next evening for dinner. The peanut butter pie I would suggest they take it off the menu or remake it to be peanut butter pie. It's actually vanilla pudding in a good crust with whipped cream and some kind of peanut butter crumble, the server said we could get something else but we already took a few bits so we said we would just finish it. Just be prepared for a large tab if you don't eat off the small plate menu. We will return.
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
It's an overpriced Golden Corral... There are much better dining options available for the price. I gave it two stars instead of one because the $5 toddler rate was reasonable.
google avatar

Cornelius G.

Yelp
I came here with my girlfriend Valentine's Day. I was hoping for a high-end restaurant and this is a very nice place, but I felt out of place wearing an expensive suit. Nonetheless, our dinner was outstanding. We ordered scallops wrapped in bacon, which was nothing short of splendid. Cooked perfectly and served piping hot. We both had lump crab cakes, which were fantastic. Our meals came with a choice of potato or mixed veggies and we ordered one of each. Salad was also included. Very good. We washed it down with a great bottle of wine. Excellent dining experience. I'm glad that I requested their "elegant" dining room, but I was disappointed by the number of men wearing lumberjack shirts and tractor trailer caps.

Yelp
Six of my girlfriends met for lunch for my birthday. The food was excellent. The service was great, as always. I love this place.

Stephen B.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with above average food. Service is top notch. Just know that it is pricy for a family to go.
google avatar

Raven T.

Yelp
First of all, this place is basically a castle lol. You drive along in a surburban and mostly residential area then boom, giant mansion of a restaurant. Came here for brunch buffet over the summer and was pleasantly surprised. With a buffet you really never know what you're going to get. Upstairs there's a huge dining room that held more people than I could count. The buffet boasts a large selection of food, both savory and sweet. We got a table in a small adjoining room to the large room with a buffet service and were greeted by a lovely server. She quickly offered and brought us the drinks that we wanted. Brunch comes with all non-alcoholic beverages so coffee, soda, water, tea and mimosas are some nominal amount I can't remember exactly but well under 10 bucks. I had salmon and chicken and pasta, sausage, bacon, eggs, potatoes, and a really delicious mix of cream of crab and Maryland crab; you know a half and half. It's a great place for large parties. Would definitely recommend and come back.

Jean B.

Yelp
Amazing on all counts!!! Best in the area!!! We will return again!!!!!!! Everything is fresh and well prepared!!!!! Great service!!!

Yelp
Food great. Ambience very cozy. Good for family. Big place for big group. Service is great. Crabs are all Lump meat.
google avatar

Rebecca Z.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Wide range of food items on menus. Something for everyone, including kids. Highly recommend.

Mickea M.

Yelp
My husband and I agree this is certainly have one of the best restaurants we have been to. The food was amazing, the service was spectacular from the front desk staff to the server, Shatara. The ambiance was breathtaking (we loved the different locations to eat like the patio, the dungeon, and separate rooms for intimate experiences), the drinks were superb - we both had the Old Fashion. We have been to several restaurants in the Baltimore are such a Capital Grill, Morton, Ruths Chris and most recently The Ruxton and this restaurant supersedes ALL of them without a doubt - in quality, atmosphere, service, presentation and detail, pricing, etc. It is well worth the hour drive from Baltimore for us for any occasion.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Food is very excellent. The service is great. The atmosphere is wonderful and the people there are so polite so well mannered and very very nice. It is a little pricey there. You'll love it there.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
We have heard about their buffet for years and finally made it for a Friend's Brunch right before Christmas. We had a reservation for 12:30. The place was packed but tables were spaced out that you don't feel like you are on top of each other. The service was exceptional. We wanted to catch up and definitely did not feel rushed. The food was excellent as well. A lot of choices, 2 soups, salad bar, crab dip, garlic bread, assortment of pastry, chicken, salmon, couple pasta dishes, prime rib, breakfast items, and of course assortment of desserts. Overall, a great experience.

A F.

Yelp
I enjoyed the sweet potatoes muffins -- omg they were to die for. The salmon was bland for me but the chicken parm was bomb!!! Would return if in the area and wanting to splurge.

Tony A.

Yelp
Food and atmosphere are great here, very quiet and laid back, a time was had in the basement lol. Definitely recommend the mixed drinks there, bartenders know their stuff!
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
We were here around the holidays and has to be one the best times to visit this spot. Festive decorations and mood are experienced once you arrive. Feels like a large home broken up into different rooms to provide that cozy, inviting atmosphere. Arrived at 12:30 on a Thursday and they were booked solid (reservations are recommended). Perfect spot for the office Holiday lunch and gift exchange and we saw a bit of that. We started with the Sea scallops (wrapped in Bacon) and the Crab Dip-both excellent with the Dip standing out as it was placed on toasted bread and baked to perfection. For main, it was a couple of French Dip sandwiches (Prime Rib was tender and tasty and one of the best we've had). Crab Cake Sandwich had mostly Jumbo Lump meat with minimal filler. For side, the way to go is the house made "Fresh Fried Chips" (these are not potato chips)-delicious! Made the mistake of ordering French fries (never again). Somehow we had room for dessert so ordered Lemon Chiffon Pie and Chocolate Mousse Pie. Both were excellent and a sampling of the long list of desserts. Although they were busy, service was engaged and attentive. Amber took great care of us! Overall, great spot for lunch and celebrations! We will be back.

Marc T.

Yelp
Pricey but food quality and service made it worth it. We ordered the salads, calamari, pork chops and crab cakes . The largest pork chop I have ever seen. Everything was delicious.
google avatar

Meg M.

Yelp
Pretty pricey but you definitely get the experience you pay for. Staff is always very friendly and the food is amazing.
google avatar

Ilene B.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have ever had. Waitstaff was awesome. We had a large party and service was excellent
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great place to take your loved one out for a fantastic meal this is the place. The atmosphere here is outstanding, from the upstairs that's more formal feeling to the downstairs which they called the dungeon, which is very laid-back absolutely beautiful. We prefer the dungeon, but have ate in both sections. The service here is second to none. This is a place where people absolutely love their jobs. They like the pay and they do anything and everything to make sure you're leaving satisfied. The food is definitely pricey, but the quality reflects the price.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
My husband and adult children absolutely love this restaurant. The Cream of Crab is to die for. Staff are informed, friendly and entertaining.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Service was great! I'm not a huge fan of seafood though so I wasn't overly impressed with the food. My fiancé ordered a steak and he thought it was really good. The seating was beautiful! If you love seafood and don't mind the expensive prices, then you should visit!
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
Omg! I love this place! This is truly a sneaky find! My coworker who is from Frederick would rave about this place and how I should go here for an anniversary dinner or special occasion. My review is based off a large event I attended for my mother in laws 70th birthday party. She said the customer service they gave her during the planning process was great and everyone was polite and accommodating. My experience with the food? Everything was good! My mother in law did the buffet style line up for her party and honestly if I had a wedding? I would go here! There was a wedding going on next door to her party. They have tables everywhere. And if you go in the basement they have a bar down there too. There is plenty of parking and I heard their crab cakes is what people drive down here for. I cannot wait to come here for date night!

Melissa H.

Yelp
Our daughter did not want a huge wedding reception, so we contacted Jeff, an event coordinator. He was very easy to work with, very accommodating and knowledgeable. The menu we chose was phenomenal and exactly what we wanted. Mateo and Monica were our servers, who, were not only very accommodating, but, I feel, went above and beyond our expectations. They not only were there to serve but they helped set up our decorations and helped pack them up. They remembered what everyone was drinking and kept our glasses filled, while also remembering what everyone ordered. The food was very well prepared and the portions were more than I expected. Thank you so much for a memorable wedding dinner.
google avatar

Greg L.

Yelp
Very good food. The wait staff was fast and very attentive. Marlene at the front desk was very polite and helpful . I love all of the wood paneling inside. I'll go back again.

Heather L.

Yelp
Sat at the bar. Server super nice. Crab cake was sooo good. Can't wait to come back. Want to try the imperial next.

James M.

Yelp
I had the crab cakes and lobster. Lobster was a bit tough and not cut so that the meat was already out of the shell, which made it more difficult to eat. The crab cake was meaty and decent; however, I've had better in South Alabama and Florida. The ambience was nice. Decor was beautiful. The service was great. I'd go back, but probably only on the company dime (again) as it was pricey for an average dinner.

Kenneth P.

Yelp
The food and service at Dutch's Daughter is exceptional. You are not rushed, last Friday night we celebrated a friends birthday, there were 6 of us at the table. We were there almost 2 1/2 hours. The food is a little pricey but worth every penny spent. All 6 of us left there happy and very satisfied. Dutch's is my favorite place to eat. We were in one of formal dining rooms, there are 4 on the 1st floor and 4 on the 2nd floor, plus The Dungeon in the basement. My favorite room, The Dungeon , is less formal and has a bar , plus outside dining in warm weather. Once you come here you will be back!
google avatar

Fabian M.

Yelp
Well it's like an Amish version of a Vegas buffet. All was pretty good and rich. Service was fast and super friendly. Parking was plentiful and easy. I didn't even get to try everything. But will come back to hit it up again. Biscuit and gravy was on point. Eggs were fluffy. Save room for the sweets. Tons of cake and pie options. Oh don't miss the sausages they were good too.

John C.

Yelp
Attended a reception at a retirement party. Staff was polite, excellent bartenders, food was good, particularly the crab cakes.
google avatar

Bianca C.

Yelp
Great service, great ambiance! I ordered the crab dip bread, it was so amazing! The stuffed mushrooms and ahi tuna were a hit too
google avatar

Theresa M.

Yelp
Never had a bad meal. Service is always professional. The atmosphere is banquet like depending on the room you're in. Downstairs is nicer.
