A guide to the best chocolates and bonbons in metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Born from a hobby that became an obsession, this maker carefully transforms Equator-grown cacao into craft chocolate through a meticulous, hands-on process. The owner’s Indian heritage informs creative flavor profiles, such as a Pista Kulfi bar inspired by traditional Indian ice cream and a Mango Madness bar that balances sweet and spicy notes." - Will Reaume

Baobab Fare has launched a line of ethically-sourced chocolate bars called Shokola | Eater Detroit

"I spoke with owner Rajani Konkipudi about her collaboration with Soko: Dwaar Chocolate, based in Keego Harbor, imports raw cocoa beans and roasts and grinds them 'the old fashioned way' using stone grinders; although she typically sources beans from small-scale farmers in Honduras or India, for this project she began importing from Kokoa Kamili in Mbingu, Tanzania, and said she wanted to support Mamba and Nijimbere after hearing their refugee story." - Serena Maria Daniels

What a cool addition to our community! She is clearly quite passionate about her craft, and welcomed our family into her shop, and told us all about how the chocolate is made. She also educated us about how big Business will buy their cocoa from nations that use child labor, and she joined with other chocolatiers to speak up for these oppressed people. The store is really streamlined, so the chocolate is the star of the show. All the packaging is clearly of high quality, and each piece is marked with its batch and date. It feels quite luxurious, and it is pretty neat that they settled in, right here in Keego Harbor! Now, with all that being said, one will wonder about the taste. This chocolate is an experience to be savored and enjoyed, it was incredible. I for one will give it to out of town guests as a gift, that is unique to our city! What a pleasure!

Was super fortunate to catch up with this place at a yelp event.. chocolate was absolutely amazing and the variety of flavors with the high percent of dark chocolate is much more than I could have expected. Loved the white chocolate cardamom bar along with the blueberry with seeds. So good. Can't wait to try more of their stuff an place an order

Google
You can not even imagine how talented and remarkable the chocolate maker is, and you can tell with each bar that she is such a fan of food. Her bars are adventurous and a mascot for a mascot for yummy town. This is single origin craft chocolate, so if you are not familiar with what that means, ask questions and jump into a new chocolate adventure.

Google
Haven't been to store yet but I hear it's a chocolate destination for those looking for a more flavored nuance chocolate experience. I have tried several different bars and Christmas specialties. Very surprised at the quality and flavors. Ordered online Oct 2021 and went smoothly. I plan to gift an elegant bar and enjoy one with friends for special a occasion. Last time I did that kind of thing it was a real hit with the crowd. I saw the tab to donate to Abhihaara Social Enterprise and after reading up I donated. I am not an influencer or wannabee but mention it because the cause is legit and Dwaar has integrity so I know my donation will go to where it is intended. 5/5

Wow, I'm in heaven! Each item is handmade and crafted with love! Such a treat to watch her make the chocolate bars! The prices reflect this quality and are worth every penny! My Mom loved her Mango bar! Please go and check it out! She has so much to offer! 😊

Google
On a day they were closed, they saw me and my daughters peeking in the window. True to their name they opened the "door", invited us in and offered us samples. Some of the best chocolate I ever had. The cardamom white chocolate was insane! I am happy they are a part of our community and even more happy I have a half dozen delectable chocolate bars to enjoy!

Google
I am so in love with this chocolate. I found them at a craft fair. The dark koffee is better than any dark choc covered exoresso bean you have ever tasted. Heavenly and just insanely good. Best dark choc I have ever had.

Yelp
We enjoyed a private class that took us from bean to bar. I love everything about Dwaar. Their mission to bring the finest beans and support independent farmers is amazing. The 70% dark chocolate is some of the best you will ever try! Our host and owner is so lovely, she was patient with the beginner questions and offered nothing but her extensive knowledge which is invaluable. A small tight production, you can see the care and attention to detail. They are the only chocolate make in the greater Detroit area, most others are chocolatiers who fashion their good from premade chocolates that are laden with sugar. With Dwaar you will taste the notes of the chocolate. And they should sell those roasted cacao seeds, they are delis and addictive! For high quality dark search them out!

Yelp
Dark chocolate is the least of my favorite chocolate variety, but after having a bite of DWAAR chocolate I developed a deeper appreciation .. more so having after gaining knowledge on how the dark chocolate bar was originally made of ... from cacao beans imported from a country like Ecuador. Tons of dried beans are imported to Michigan, which is then roasted, shells removed, grind, mixed and tempered to shape as a bar, bonbon and other holiday shapes. Each bar individual bar is priced a bit higher than the commercial chocolate late because DWAAR chocolate has a higher percentage of cocoa and much darker in color. The chocolate maker / owner of DWAAR chocolate is very passionate about her product. Be assured the she creates the highest quality of dark chocolate you can find only Michigan. The owner received an award and was featured in magazines, online and tv. I wish in the near future she will be able to mass produce and supply chocolate discs that can be melted and used as coating in fruits, chips, apples and pretzels. Must try the so-called sipping chocolate which is 100% dark.

Yelp
This small business is tucked away in a small strip mall where you can easily miss it as you travel down Cass Lake road in Keego Harbor which I have admittedly done for years. Having just recently been made made aware of this business through a YELP event, I was pleased to learn that Dwaar Chocolate is one of the few Chocolate makers in Metro Detroit that makes chocolate from imported beans where she roasts them in her business, grinds the beans and tempers and molds the chocolate all in the confines of the kitchen in this small shop. Truly the definition of Boutique chocolate in this instance . She has fermented relationships with small Cocoa farmers from around the world where she directly imports these beans to Michigan to make here chocolate. The owner, Rajanji Konkipudi is friendly, outgoing and extremely knowledgeable about her craft where she has gone from a Hobby Crafter of making her own chocolate in her basement to creating her own commercial business where she has gained national recognition for the Chocolate she crafts in her small Keego shop. Truly inspiring and a great example of living the American dream. Relative to product, her dark chocolate bars are very very tasty with nice creamy texture and great unique flavor notes that are tied to the regions/terrior of where she has sourced her beans. She is so open and friendly when describing her chocolate where I learned so much in the time I was around her about how other commercial chocolates are made that you normally eat and how her boutique chocolate differs and is superior in all aspects. Truly eye opening. Overall, if you are a fan of fine dark chocolate than this is a must visit business if you are in the area and worth traveling to if you are not. Five stars in my book!

Yelp
What a great experience attending Yelp event at the Dwaar Chocolate! Rajani Konkipudi, the owner and founder, is a natural educator and her chocolate is in a league of its own! From the minute you walk into this small yet cosy shop you are enveloped with the delicious smell of chocolate that is made by Rajani right here, in the backroom! From the first sentence of her story of origin of her business you can feel the passion she has for her craft and, it's no wonder, she is known from here in Michigan and all the way to Hollywood, as well as throughout chocolatier community. Once you taste Rajani's chocolate, there is no going back to the mainstream "chocolate-wanna-be". Your tastebuds are forever transformed. Thank you, Yelp and Annette for a great event- both delicious and educational (and inspiring).

Yelp
Mmm, such quality chocolate!!! You can tell it was made with great care & passion. Right when you enter Dwaar, the smell of chocolate fills you up instantly. It is a cute and tiny chocolate spot in Keego Harbor & KC is so kind and welcoming with a lovely personality! I only spoke with her briefly for a Yelp event but from the short encounter, you can tell she is very knowledgeable with her chocolates! Thanks so much for the delicious bites! My toddler and I gobbled it all up in a sitting (his first time tasting dark chocolate but he loved it)! If you're looking for something sweet and classic, support this business, your sweet tooth will definitely thank you!

Yelp
I sampled the chocolate at a pop-up in the West Bloomfield library and it was delicious. But good luck actually trying to buy some! I was told at the pop-up that the store is open on weekends. There are no hours listed on either their website or FB page. I stopped by on a Saturday a few weeks ago during the time when they were supposed to be open, according to the hours posted on the door. Nope. I came back about an hour later; they were open, and the clerk -- who was very, very nice -- acknowledged that the hours on the door were outdated. I excitedly chose about $50 worth of chocolate, but couldn't purchase it because their only credit card machine was in use at an offsite location! I came back today just before noon, during the supposed business hours, and the door was locked, with no note or anything indicating why or when they'll be open. They are not exactly around the corner: it's a 25-minute drive. And this was my last opportunity to buy chocolate for Christmas gifts as we're leaving town tomorrow. So disappointed! This was the final straw for me; I'll be looking elsewhere. I think the owner has to decide whether this is a hobby or a real business, and if it's the latter, hire someone to run the business side of things.

Yelp
Excellent bean to bar chocolate. Went to an event that taught us about chocolate where the owner was the speaker/teacher and sampled about 7-8 different chocolates. She really takes pride in her craft and the chocolate taste was excellent. If you get a chance stop by and pick up some bars. The Joy of Julia bar was my favorite with shards of burnt sugar. 70% dark zorzal had an excellent creaminess for a dark and dark Indian koffee had a punch for my coffee loving husband. The mango madness with its heat kick at the end was my son's favorite. Her selection varies as she is a small batch maker so try what you can and see what flavors are there when you go, or order online. I am excited a shop by me is carrying her bars so if you see them I recommend them highly.
