Best LGBTQ and Gay Bars in Houston, Texas | Eater Houston

"Open since 1970, this legendary Montrose bar has so much to offer. Take the staircase up to Eagle’s Phoenix room and gaze at a timeline of major historical gay events on the wall. Take a moment to examine a salvaged door from the historic bar, Mary’s. Or peruse its selection of products and intimate wear in its in-bar store. No visit is complete without sampling its specialty cocktail drinks, including Red Bull-spiked cocktails and $6 Crown Royal blackberry pours, which can be enjoyed on the Eagle’s second-floor patio." - Lane Gillespie

The 8 Best LGBTQ+ Bars In Houston

"The inside of Houston Eagle resembles a 1970s neighborhood sports bar, but if you replaced all the sportsball memorabilia with gay history posters, flyers, and photos. Weekly events here run the gamut: leather fetishes, excellent drag, Latin nights, and truly some of the most entertaining karaoke patrons in the neighborhood. Drinks here are you-call-it, and there’s usually a daily special or two for cheap wells, premiums, and the gay bar standard: vodka. Maybe not everyone at the Eagle knows your name, yet, but they will after that diva karaoke solo." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

Eagle Houston feels more like a generic club than what you’d expect from an Eagle bar. The crowd and atmosphere don’t really fit the traditional vibe, and this is the only Eagle I’ve seen with such a large number of women. The bartenders are hit or miss—some are great, others not so much. But the biggest downside is how unfriendly the people are. I’ve given this place multiple chances, and every time, the crowd just feels unwelcoming. If you’re looking for a real Eagle experience, this probably isn’t it.

Google
It started with attending a monthly group function at Eagle Houston. I began to fall in love with it. The employees were polite and service was good. It has lots of patio space and nice bars downstairs. I especially love attending the Eagle Pride Festival during the Gay Pride weekend.

Google
Kicked me out with no explanation and with out cause. Only thing I did was stream live and dance with sunglasses on. Only thing I could think of is the complexion of my skin. I will campaign against this place every chance I get. I need a negative star button.

Google
During Pride Parade weekend their music was ON-POINT! Thanks for a fantastic time! Everybody was just jamming away and having a fantastic time.

Google
A haven for pickpockets. I want to love this bar...but, I've had property stolen here TWICE in the past six months. On my last visit, four customers on the balcony were asking people about stolen mobile phones. I would suggest bringing a burner phone and a wallet that can be secured inside your clothing. It's just not safe to spend time here without additional precautions, and the staff is not interested in helping if something goes wrong. Beyond the major risk of theft, it's a fun place. The music is usually pretty decent (better upstairs). It's not the Eagle you'll find in other big cities (IYKYNK), but it's one of the better weekend options. Just don't bring anything of value with you.

Dirty Disco Sunday is my favorite ❤️ love this so much. I try to get others to come out and not only of our kind but the other ones 😸

6.16.25 Great spot for Monday karaoke~. Bartender is very kind and welcoming and the crowd is great!

Google
Never heard of mixing ground beef with chorizo for mini burgers, but dayum, this place turns that dish out on special occasions and it is the bomb! The menu is full of great fusion dishes, it was hard to decide. The prices seem to match the portions and I'm eager for a return to Eagle Eats to try another dish. Or I may just be stuck on those mini burgers for a while! (Hopefully soon to be a regular menu item.)

Yelp
i've eaten tacos from coast to coast, so i think i can fairly weigh in on these tacos. the are insanely delicious ! they honestly blew my expectations out of the water. i stopped by at the end of a bar crawl, and they did not miss! i ordered the shrimp tacos. the service was fast and friendly, and i didnt see any creepy crawlies hanging around. its a food truck so you can sit on the patio of the bar its next to or just take them to go. the vibe is chill if you plan to stay. will definitely be going back, i mean can you beat 3 tacos for $12 that are delicious?!?? if you can let me know, because this place is like an urban legend. bonne appétit

Yelp
Place is super fun. Near here to Houston and this place was very welcoming. Bartender was very attentive and also gave me tips on nearby areas. Love it here reminds me of a place back home. Which is Los Angeles

Yelp
Eagle Houston is not just a gay bar, but it's an entertainment center. It has 2 dance floors, wraparound patio with seating, friendly bartenders and great drinks. Best of all, no cover charge and the drink prices are really reasonable. I usually come to Eagle Houston to dance after work on weekends. That's a main source of my cardio activities. I'm also here monthly for Houston Bears social mixer upstairs The Phoenix Room. Speaking of upstairs, Eagle Houston has a wraparound patio with a bar. There are 3 entrances to The Phoenix Room. The dance floor is usually packed on Saturday because the music is more popular danceable music than downstairs and it comes with video mix on all screens. Oh, by the way, this space can be rented out for private events. I was at Eagle Houston on Memorial Day Sunday. It was Latin night downstairs and disco upstairs. This place was packed. It was a lot of fun. No lines to the club, just has to go through a security pat down. Eagle Houston has a parking lot. It's right across the street and it's $20 on weekends. I usually come early and stay all night. That's better than parking at Montrose Collective garage. Eagle Houston has a rich history in the gayborhood. I remember posting a tip about the temporary location in downtown back in 2016, when it had a fire damage. After moving back, it became a center of attraction. If I live nearby, I would come here every night.

Yelp
I like going here for the second floor's music and the Mexican shots. The service is usually pretty decent. However, the last time I was here, the bar tender (a tall Caucasian man) was rude and dismissive. When I gave him my me and my friends' order, he said he was only making one type, to pick one. We still bought the drinks, but not what we wanted and his customer service was unacceptable. The overall vibe of the crowd is friendly. The restrooms are small (2 toilets) and clean.

Yelp
First time going here since its previous location. I like the whole multilevel theme of the place but the music is kind of stereotypical given that it's a leather bar. I mean Miley Cyrus? Really?
google avatar

Stanley F.

Yelp
Not a fan. Tried going out several times with friends and inevitably we end up passing through the Eagle. It always smells like a urinal, the floors are sticky, but the bartenders usually very nice and efficient.

Yelp
Had so much fun here! We came on a Sunday night, where they were playing Spanish music, and it was a blast! My friends and I have never been out together to any gay bars, so I wanted to show them some fun places! This bar did not disappoint. We ordered some food at the food truck in front and we're able to take it inside. Now this bar has two stories, the first floor consist of a rectangular bar and then a dance floor. The second floor is a lot smaller, with one bar and little space (still fun tho). We danced and drank and had probably one of my fave nights in the whole month! I'm glad that I could show my friends a good time out here and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
The service was quick and the food was amazing, the birria was superb and the prices were better than my more local spots. The environment was friendly and they helped us ordering since it was our first time trying this place, definitely will be back for their birria.

Yelp
EL TROPICAL SOOOO GUUUD great food and excellent service. A must experience. Meat tender not dry. The fixings on this taco are an excellent blend of flavors that compliment and don't over power each other.

Yelp

Yelp
We checked It out hitting a few of the local bars remaining in Montrose. It was clean and bartenders were nice and friendly. This was a weekday after a late lunch. It was nice to feel like it was ok to be there since the area bars really seem to cater only to men. Nice outdoor area. The whole place was clean and Bathrooms were really clean.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a NYC club kid from the limelight days. Mark spins better classic disco and high energy dance music than any dj still spinning. The cocktails and adult store are amazing as well. Wayne aka blue eyed angel

Yelp
Ooh lala. What can I say. This place is very fun. It's loud, it's energetic, it is everything you need to get lost for a little night. It is not the most inclusive place. That is not the bar's fault. It's what has been claimed lol. The atmosphere is AGGRESSIVE! Which is actually a plus lol. Come here for some mature fun away from blur, or amp up your night if you're coming from JR's. This place is where one would dance the night away and not remember a few things. They also have fun shops :).
google avatar

Casey R.

Yelp
I really honestly love the welcoming to the bar and made me feel warm and fuzzy :) and that's the honest truth

Cindy V.

Yelp
I usually have a blast here, but during Pride weekend out of all the days out of the year, they declined us entry because my purse was too big!!!??? I carry a medium size tote, nothing outrageous. I even offered them to check the contents but was turned away. I was there just an hour or so before and entered without an issue what so ever. These absurd door people legit just turned us away for such an irrational reason. Such a shame since we come here often but doubt we will come here again.

Brittany Nicole S.

Yelp
That buffalo chicken quesadilla hits every time!! Service is also pleasant and the wait is never too long.
google avatar

Natasha L.

Yelp
Fun and lively spot to include on your Montrose stroll. Simple tasty drinks with a DJ to assist the entertainment.
google avatar

Sridhar R.

Yelp
I went alone, multiple times. The food truck is really good, bathrooms are clean and the staff is nice. Don't go alone, I got bored being alone. Oh the drinks are good
google avatar

Nikki J.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday afternoon, so it was pretty empty. Bartender was welcoming. Mexican candy shooters here are yummy! Also love the layout. This place is pretty spacious -- you can definitely host a dance party. Then there's a nice patio and an upstairs patio as well!

Yelp
Eagle gets a solid 4 stars! Welcome to Houston's gayborhood staple. This isn't the typical Eagle bar you might encounter in other cities. Don't get it twisted - if you're in Houston, this is a 'must visit'. The bartenders: Absolutely, hands down, unequivocally the BEST bartenders in all of Houston's gay scene. They are friendly and always have a smile. Shout out to Charles! We will wait in line for him! Everyone delivers here. The scene: The crowd is mixed. From 21 to 40+, you will find someone to talk too. Everyone is friendly and you won't miss out on all of the laughs. I mean, it's Texas after all. This Eagle isn't about your typical leather scene and you won't spot a drag queen around. If that's your thing, this isn't the spot. The drinks: Strong. Enough said?
google avatar

Christopher V.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting the Eagle. I have to say everyone was very friendly including the patrons. It reminded me of the times when people actually went to a bar to meet other people and strike up a conversation. Charlie was the bartender. He has a very impressive beard and he was very welcoming. I also met a very nice gentleman in the gift shop. I can't remember the name at the moment, but he showed me a lot of the items and was very informative. I went on a slow day on purpose and look forward to coming back when things are really hopping.

Yelp
Eagle is one of my go-to bars when I want quick drink service, a neighborhood atmosphere, great drinks (whether on special or not), and handsome looking and friendly bartenders. This really is one of the friendliest bars I've been too. The bartenders don't ignore you, even if they are busy making other drinks. They ensure you are serviced as quick as they can get to you. My favorite nights are Thursdays for $2 big beer mug nights. For the cost of the mug, the deal is worth it. You recover the cost after a few beers. Friday vodka special is great too. Have you been to the bar upstairs yet? If not, you must. In addition to the same great atmosphere as downstairs, you get a glimpse into Houston LGBT history.

Krysta G.

Yelp
Omg!!! Alex was amazing, back bar , curly hair, tattoos, so sweet, attentive and on point with the drinks... we are bartenders from SA visiting and it was great all around, ESPECIALLY thanks to him, can't wait to hit this place up again, and you must!!!!

Tamara B.

Yelp
Had a great time last night in Montrose for Halloween with no thanks to this place. In our party of 10 the door men wouldn't let three ladies with medium sized purses in the door. They explained their reason was because they could have a gun or a knife in it. This is understandable BUT they had metal detectors. They could have easily used those on said purses, but refused. I'll never frequent this place again and I'll make sure to tell all of the people I know as well.
google avatar

Austin A.

Yelp
Great local place to meet people. Great drinks. Amazing staff. Always a fun. Brings in guests DJs. Entertaining staff. Great shop to buy merchandise. The upstairs is a nice getaway. Love the patio. They put on great events.

Asusena R.

Yelp
Went there a week ago and the best thing about this place is the DJ on Thursday! His mix on Latin music was on point and transitions 10/10. Overall the environment was so much fun and felt like I knew everyone because of the welcoming crowd. Def recommend!

Yelp
If you're familiar with the 'Eagle' bar name, you probably immediately think of leather, boots, harnesses, and hot scruffy older men. That's exactly what the Eagle is known for. This is a new location that is much different from the previous one in Downtown Houston. By different, I mean the new place is actually really nice and clean inside, decent lighting, the bathroom situation isn't crammed, and they have a very nice patio downstairs and upstairs. There's a very small sex store inside the bar where you can find toys, t-shirts, pipes, lube, and of course leather harnesses and masks. The main bar area is very spacious compared to the other bars in the area like Mining Company. The back walls have large projection screens displaying music videos, and movies throughout the night. That was pretty cool. My only concern is that this 'Eagle' doesn't really live up to the 'Eagle' name. If you're actually looking to find men dressed in leather, wearing harnesses, whips and chains, you're not going to see that here. Well, at least the past few times I've came I have not seen anyone fit the traditional dress code. Eagle bars are known for being 'Crusie', and sometimes even hosting some promiscuous backroom action, that doesn't happen here. Look out for their specials on drinks like $3 Margaritas every Monday, and $3 Crown Royals on Wednesday. Also, on Sunday nights they have Disco all night long. Overall, it's a great bar and an excellent addition to the Gayborhood in Houston. I had a blast!

Yelp
Friends have told me how fun this place is so I decided to check it out on a recent visit to Houston. First, this is NOT an "Eagle". The décor sorta reminds me of the old Montrose Mining Co., may he rest in peace. The music was fine, bartenders quick, I even liked the Trading Co. Sadly, like the rest of Montrose, this bar has been invaded by straight women. I'm sure I'll get flack but if I wanted to go to a bar and hang out with a bunch of screaming straight women I'd go to a straight bar. I would definitely not bring one with me like so many guys seem to do now-a-days. I even counted many of straight couples, you can tell because they were desperately hanging on to their woman. You have your own bars, go there!
google avatar

Trevor R.

Yelp
Was my favorite bar until they did away with beer night and raised the prices of mixed drinks, it's no longer gay with all the straight women in there and the straight stripper boys? Supposed to b a bar for gay guys it's gone to hell. Very very disappointed!!!
google avatar

Andy V.

Yelp
I met a friend for drinks here and I got here much earlier which always makes me nervous. You never know what you're going to get when you're at a bar in a city where you don't live, but I really loved the Houston Eagle. First, and probably the main reason for the five stars is the crowd and bartenders- both were the nicest people I think I've ever come in contact with. Each bartender was genuinely nice and the patrons were as equally welcoming and friendly which takes all anxiety away. The next great thing is that huge second story deck. A few seats but a lot of standing room. A perfect place to relax with a drink (or two) in hand while you kick back on a Sunday Funday, or a Wednesday night, it your life, not mine so yolo. The music was great. The inside portion was huge so there was plenty of space to move around- it's HOT in Houston so you definitely want some space at times between you and the next person. The second story also has a bar and dance floor and a smaller indoor seating area which we definitetly used to beat the heat for awhile. Cheap drinks with a lot of liquor are the icing on the cake for this place I'd definitely come back to when I'm in Houston again.
google avatar

H L.

Yelp
Poor bartender service. I understand it's busy but I stood at the upstairs for 15 minutes and watched everyone to the left of me and right of me get serviced. When I finally got a chance to talk to the bartender he just pointed to the people that just walked up to the bar and proceeded to take care of them first. At that point I just walked out.

Joseph S.

Yelp
I love Eagle no doubt about that. But there's one incident that would change everything. A black guy who happened to be a doorman who is absolutely rude and just because I guess he has nothing to do that night. I guess I was the easy target for him and told me that I drink the drinks beyond the patio which is not true because I left my drinks on the rails and trashed the food that I bought from the Eagle food truck by the way it's really good and came back and I picked it up when I stepped on the first steps and he just took my drink and told me that I drunk it which I didn't and told me that I can't go back anymore and was super ridiculous and wasted my time arguing with a guy who doesn't listen and just want to be a big guy and as if he owns the place. He was horrible and a terrible person!
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
As a straight woman with many, many gay friends I have come to love the Eagle. Sunday's and Trash Disco are so fun!! I have never felt out of place here, always welcomed and the staff is great. Really high quality clientele - good job making all welcome!
google avatar

Rafael S.

Yelp
Cool and fun time! Clean place. Found it to be the best bar we went to. Neat time and will return if ever back in the are.
google avatar

Christopher Alex M.

Yelp
If you're not into dealing with the Beyoncés or the nicki manjas, I do recommend this bar. Older more mature crowd mixed with younger. Drinks are okay. I've been told they are strong so maybe I've chosen the wrong bartenders or maybe they don't like me. But if the bartender Chris is there, I definitely recommend visiting him. Regardless, I still tag along with friends from time to time. The Eagle offers something different from the usual gay bars but if you're looking for a quick buzz, I recommend dealing with the Beyoncés and grabbing a stiff drink from Crocker down the street. The Eagle does offer a very nice patio bar and convenient shop inside in queso emergency ;) RIP 611, we miss you!
google avatar

Joel B.

Yelp
Nice bar. DJ Arnold spins the best mixes. It gets crowded quickly but there is plenty of space on the patios. Be careful under the balconies. When folks spill drinks it goes through the boards.

Austin G.

Yelp
the birria tacos.. GAS. 10/10. favorite taco spot in all of houston, love this place.

Adam B.

Yelp
I am never coming back here. I go every weekend and spend minimum $200 on me and my friends. I walked outside and wasn't looking where I was going, and missed a step on the stairs. It was 10:30PM and a doorman told me I needed to leave and it was time for me to go. He thought I was drunk stumbling around - I TRIPPED. I had been there one hour. I tried to tell him but he grabbed me and tried to get me to leave. The security guards were sitting behind him watching his interaction with me and I was frightened. I left, walked to Ripcord, and spent three hours there dancing. I don't know who the new doorman was at The Eagle but he made me feel insulted and unwanted at what used to be my favorite bar. I am boycotting The Eagle and not coming back. I will not be made to feel unwelcome by an overzealous doorman who thinks anyone who trips is a drunk who shouldn't be there.
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
Just boring.. Maybe cuz its monday nite, and MLK day to boot.. Ripcord bartenders are definitely more courteous than this asshole.

Durant S.

Yelp
Visited the Eagle with my bf this past memorial day weekend and while a fun place was way too loud inside the bar. had to get outside but it started raining on friday afternoon. sat and sun were fun but again so loud inside had to go outside and was so crowded couldnt find a place to hang out or sit. this bar seems to be the place to be but why does the music in gay video bars have to be so darn loud that you cant hear even think let alone hear what someone is saying or them hear what you are saying .
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
Last night was opening night of this new location. They have relocated to the gayborhood (that's a plus), but parking in that area on a Saturday is terrible (minus). The new place is in great shape, and will probably be better once they get into the groove. Last night the a/c apparently was NOT on - because it was cooler outside. And in June, in Houston, that's about 90. We were working up a sweat just nursing a drink and watching the crowd. Almost miserable. We started a tab and was told it would be $8. Because of the heat, we were ready to go, so we closed the tab. It was now mysteriously $12. $8 was super cheap, so that was a plus. Changing the price on you, that's a minus. The heat really was unbearable. And it was packed - which is a good sign that this new place will do great business, but they need to work out the kinks. We'll be back I'm sure - hope they've got the a/c on.

Jasmine A.

Yelp
I can't get over how nice and helpful the drag queen with the shots was. I loved their charisma, their personality, and how enjoyable they made my night there!! Love love love the outfits and the spirit they brought
google avatar

Donovan G.

Yelp
While they did a phenomenal job renovating the decrepit 611...it's definitely not your neighborhood bar. I'll start with the positive things. The outdoor decks, both upstairs and down are great. The music is fantastic. The door man is always pleasant & welcoming. Now..the not so nice stuff. Drinks are overpriced and under poured. Parking is a nightmare and expensive. The taco trucks parked outside on weekends stink up anyone who's on the patio. All said, I'll continue to visit this bar because it is definitely fun. I'll just grab my drinks at the other bars before hitting this one.

John D.

Yelp
It's good if you happen to be in the right clique. The bartenders are super rude (unless you're in their clique). Just stay away.
google avatar

Gerard S.

Yelp
So I just tried to go to the eagle with my friend and this employee just started going off on my friend and I for parking in the fire lane. Nothing is labeled that its a fire lane and the guy just kept going off on my friend. Finally I was like lets just go elsewhere. Learn some customer service because we will Definately not be returning

Hope G.

Yelp
I would give less than one star but that's not possible. I came to watch the super bowl and got told to be quiet. Chris is the bartender who can't make a drink. He's a small man with with little man syndrome. Bless his heart!!
google avatar

Chad M.

Yelp
Thank the Lord that the Eagle has finally re-opened. These guys have already solidified a solid spot on the Houston gay bar scene and for good reason. The drinks are reasonably priced, the crowd is mixed but all friendly and the music will keep you moving. I love the fact that they have a patio with tables and you can see the scenery of the neighborhood while enjoying an adult beverage or three.
google avatar

Jet T.

Yelp
What Company used to be. A great place for guys who aren't into the twink scene, but want a hip spot to jam and drink.
google avatar

Cody J.

Yelp
Recently reopened and fresh! The newly opened upstairs is a great lounge area, with a tribute to gay history. Since reopening, we always seem to end up there, for the night. It's clean, the bartenders are quick to serve you. They don't have JR's patio, but have quite the porch/deck area. They trade in JR's patio for a dance floor with up-to date lighting and good music. They have the dancing without the underage South Beach crowd.
