The Best Bakeries in the East Bay | Eater SF

"Gaby Lubaba’s breads and pastries are a draw on their own including the trendy croffle, a croissant-waffle hybrid pastry; seasonal fruit galettes; and sourdough bread. But what gives East Bay Bakery some extra oomph are the baked goods inflected with Indonesian and Asian flavors, which Lubaba makes and sells on the weekends, such as a recent beef rendang hand pie or a banh mi danish." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
Cute bakery with lots of options to choose from. Was excited to discover Indonesian/Asian flavor but did not see any at the time of my visit (midday mid-week). Nevertheless, it’s a great croissant, freshly baked, awesome cashier, spotless bright and attractive bakery. Plenty of free parking available . May have to come back and watch out for that Asian-inspired flavor next time ;)

Google
This is the best bakery in the area! My family loves the apple streusel, blueberry hand pies, every type of croissant, kouign-amann, and cookies. Their savory croissants and fresh breads are just as incredible.

Google
I am a new fan of this bakery. Let me preface this. My family have our own two bakeries in the San Jose area. They have a phenomenal reputation for quality and my opinion of this East Bay bakery will be complementary to our expectations. I give them a five star for the quality of their baked goods And so far what I have sampled has been excellent. The layers in the croissants are phenomenal and the taste is yummy. I have tried it three times and have found it to be very consistent. I will consistently come by and pick up some baked goods often. The only thing I wish they had was longer hours during the Week But the day that they do have long hours I will just have to wait till then or hit him up on the weekend in the morning as they will run out very quickly so thank you and looking forward to doing business with you.

Google
Authentically created and crafted croissants, pastries, and more. Never had something that didn’t taste fabulous from this place. This area is much in need of a bakery like this! Definitely recommend for a sweet or savory treat! .

Patrick S.

Google
These are the best croissants I've ever had. Very crispy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. My wife and I enjoyed them so much we went back and got more within minutes lol. We ended up trying a variety of them, and they were all really good. Will definitely be back!

Abir R.

Google
small family owned business with fantastic baked goods and pastries — some of the best that i’ve had in the bay area. definitely worth a visit

Foodie T.

Google
Been coming here since they started in the farmers market and I’m hooked! Not only they make delicious pastries, but they also make Indonesian confection (hello, pandan cake!). My latest addiction is their cookie croissant that only happens on the weekends. But, go check other flavors, too!

Kathy C.

Google
LOVE this bakery! Highly recommend: - SCONES: Doesn’t matter which one; they’re all super delicious. Crumbling and crunchy on the edges + buttery and billow-y in the center. - MORNING BUNS; Flaky, buttery, and sweet with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar filling. - APPLE DANISH: Packed with sweet apple filling and baked to perfection. Flavors are so so good. It’s on the pricier side but it’s because they use high quality butter and ingredients. Some seating outside but it’s mostly grab and go.

Yelp
The minute I stepped in, I knew it was love at first sniff. The overwhelming desire to buy everything came over me (and luckily, we nearly did since I was in good company). So, whoever didn't rate this bakery 5 stars is out of their gourd because a lot of love and care went into their baked goods, and you can taste it. The bread and Croissants are the perfect balance between crisp and flake. The consistency is just right, and the flavor is absolutely delicious! Their ability to maintain the perfect balance of sweet and savory is impressive since it's not easy to do. I also really liked the customer service here. The staff works hard but at the same time manages to juggle customers gracefully while being attentive. I think the prices are very fair, especially considering the quality of baked goods! If you haven't tried this place yet, go on over and give it a try. You will not be disappointed! ‍

Yelp
Rude staff!!! Went there at 930a - which is 30 mins after opening and they are sold out of many things. Ask them if they are going to be baking new stuff - Rudely the staff member says no... I can literally see another lady in the back making a batch. Front counter person doesn't want to help out. Borderline racism behavior in this place - they seem to go above and beyond for caucasians but not for anything else.

Yelp
Maybe it was the time we came, but it was slim pickings when I came here. Only had a few selections left and the workers did not even know what they were. I asked them what was inside one of the pastries and they straight up were like "I don't know". Smh, I just got a plain croissant and the apple danish. Both were not very good. Pretty bland for laminated pastry, especially the one that should taste like apple. In a plaza with a lot of chaotic parking. I do not remember what I paid for but maybe I would try this place again in the far future. Maybe the best time to have a good experience is to come when they first open?

Yelp
A little disappointing. The Baguette was kinda doughy inside, not light and airy as it should be. Didn't take butter well as it should. The almond croissant was nice. Sizeable but expensive at $6. Difficult to find parking. The staff as friendly. I'm sticking with Mason Benoit.
google avatar

Jamie K.

Yelp
solid bakery but nothing really stands out so much to call you back. croissant is flaky but slightly bland - could be a bit more buttery!garlic cream cheese was a bit too heavy, morning bun has a nice crunch but again flavors are not outstanding:/
google avatar

Gillian Dawson Y.

Yelp
They have the best croissants around. One day I tried their Monsieur sandwich of cheese and ham which was to die for. I just wish they served coffee too.
google avatar

Larry M.

Yelp
Holy smokes, the rosemary focaccia and baguette?? Fantastic! Lots of other great looking options, but I was tasting for some great bread, and they did not disappoint!! I visited at the Danville Farmers Market... as you see, the baguette don't make it home uninjured
google avatar

Jaane F.

Yelp
This is a great bakery place to stop by. My hubby and I like their bakery goods and kuih. Their kuih was delicious and not overly sweet! We had curry puff, garlic cream cheese, and kouign amann. The garlic cream cheese taste so full of garlic. Anyway, they're so delicious! The only con is the location is quite deep inside.
google avatar

SevLong L.

Yelp
Rainy day and wanted some pastries. They added a table at the door. Pastries - still as good as before. I bought a bag of day old goodies for $13. Toasted the pastrami and cheese for a few minutes and the flakiness is back. Then I realized the deli meat may have been out at room temperature since first baked while chowing it down ... oh mine. I ate it anyway but probably not a good idea. Pastries average at $5.5/$6 each. No dine in options.

Yelp
4++ I saw this pop up on my radar when I'm staying at my parents place in San Ramon. I looked it up, and it seemed like they were showing up at farmers markets as well with their brick and mortar at a strip mall in the Danville / Blackhawk area. Super nice smallish bakery with lots of bakeries available. I came here one morning and ordered pastries for me and my parents. The folks here very friendly and helpful. Everything we had was very tasty and fresh and super well made. Nice flakey crust and delicious fillings. If you want to go with them or savory her out, the garlic cream cheese was delicious. I totally recommend and it's such a nice addition to this area. Definitely would come back the next time I'm in the area. I also want to try that waffle croissant thing that they have.
google avatar

Dre A.

Yelp
I've tried other baked goods: Garlic Cream Cheese Bread Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish Both were solid choices and consistent, I'm still skeptical about the Almond Croissant - still appears too dry.

Yelp
SO happy to have found this bakery nearby! We got there at 9am and were immediately welcomed, all the employees were so kind. They offered free samples of the everything croissant (loved it, a fun savory spin on a typical croissant). Important note: no indoor or outdoor seating, this is a takeout only spot! We ordered the morning bun ($6), strawberry brioche tart ($6), and the cream cheese garlic bread ($7). The guy helping us was so nice, giving us his recommendations, telling us about each pastry, and letting us choose which pastry we wanted from our choices. We took our pastries to a cafe afterwards to enjoy with coffee. The morning bun was everything I expected and more. I love cinnamon and was satisfied by the amount of cinnamon sugar used. Not toooo sweet, light and flakey, and there were notes of orange in it that I really liked! Strawberry brioche tart was pretty good, you could tell that the strawberries used were very fresh. The brioche was light and fluffy, and the guy helping us told us there was some peanut butter used in it. Yum! It was a bit too sweet for my taste though. Not sure how I felt about the cream cheese garlic bread- I was expecting something more savory, but the outside along with the cream cheese was actually kind of sweet. I'm not the biggest cream cheese fan either, and it was full of it. My friend raved about it though! Will definitely be back. The guy who helped us made our experience so much more fun, and the ambiance was quaint and charming. Well worth the money!

Yelp
Went a couple of times because friends, a few months ago, said it was good and I had seen the line out the door on a Saturday. Both times I went, 3 months apart, during the week, the almond crossaint was dry. It is flaky and crunchy, but kind of dry on the last quarter end each side. No filling til the middle. The middle had a lot of almond paste- too much that it was too sweet and i could not eat it all. Maybe if they made it smaller with the paste not so much in the middle it would be better - a better dispersment of the filling. The choc crossaint had a lot of the flaky pastry but a thin line of choc could hardly taste it. The apple braid was delicious. Crispy crunchy and the right amount of filling to pastry ratio. My favorite so far. More different fruit braids would be great! I went at 8.30a during the week. I was the only customer til another person walked in. The pastries were 6$ plus and they had day old pastries for sale. If the ratio of filling to pastry was better and not too dry on some of them, I would be back more often!

Yelp
Happy to have this spot nearby. The choices of bread and pastries are amazing. You can great different varieties of croissants, bread for sandwiches or a baguette to pair with a salad for dinner. The cookies are good, some better than others depending on flavor. Pricing is in line with other small bakeries so expect to spend around $10 for a couple of items.
google avatar

Marina C.

Yelp
Good selection if you go early. Some items are very overpriced but willing to support a small business that is down the street. Croffle is the best out of the three items I purchased. Will return to try more.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
This bakery is just so good. The turkey, Swiss cheese croissant is so flakey and delicious. I love their fruit and cream cheese pastries as well. And their cheesecake is out of this world. Not too overly sweet and I love the crust. if you haven't tried, it, you need to go!
google avatar

Debbie F.

Yelp
Tried 2 of the pastries kouign Amman and they were really yummy! I especially liked the one that was filled with strawberries. They run out so make sure you go early. A little pricey but delicious
google avatar

Tiffany Y.

Yelp
Good place to get baked goods! My daughter loves their olive bread! We see them at the locals farmas market, Service is good too.
google avatar

Tempura A.

Yelp
Sloppy baking--my chocolate croissant had three slender batons of chocolate, all shoved to one side of the croissant. Two-thirds was plain and one-third had chocolate. Even if they were evenly spaced, there was a poor croissant-to-chocolate ratio. Not a good value and it felt like the baker could give a sh*t about whomever was unfortunate enough to buy this pastry. The Kouign-Amann was like no Kouign-Amann I've ever had. It was more like a caramelized brioche. So if you're expecting to sink your teeth into flaky, buttery, laminated goodness, you'll get a sad trombone instead. The photos and reviews gave me high hopes. Maybe it was a bad day, or things have changed. Three stars because it was not totally terrible. My husband gives it two stars, but he has higher standards than I do.
google avatar

Richard K.

Yelp
The cream cheese garlic bread is amazing. It's garlicky, buttery, and filled with cream cheese, but also a little sweet. The almond croissant is also really good. Not too sweet and has some weight to it. Definitely one of the best croissants I've ever had.
google avatar

Sydney A.

Yelp
Yummy yummy yummy! Blackhawk needed another spot open early in the mornings! Reasons why u should try it- PLENTY OF PARKING SPACES FRESH Pastries baked right before you arrive. (Nothing frozen) Make sure to try the pastrami and cheese croissant that was delicious! I usually get ham and cheese everywhere so it was a nice change. (I heated it up at home :) ) Very clean inside as well.. note this isn't a cafe so there's no outdoor / indoor seating. Perfect for on the go if you want something quick!
google avatar

Kevin G.

Yelp
Wow - is this place popular - there was a huge line at 9 AM Sunday, which is a testament to the quality of the bakery. The croissants were nice and fluffy and flaky - delicious. Subtract 1 * for the "" Danville Premium" pricing of $5 for a plain croissant which is 5x higher than Paris.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
What a hidden gem in Blackhawk! The pastries here are as good as anything I've had in Oakland or Berkeley, and so much easier to get to on this side of the hill. I had the cheese and pastrami croissant and it was just fantastic. I also tried the croffle (croissant waffle) and kouign amann, which turned out to be 100% kid approved. I'll definitely be back to try the focaccia and more of the croissant items!
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
I have to say this is the best bakery in the tri valley. I've been waiting for a really good croissant place in the area. This place didn't disappoint. We got there when it opened and the line was out the door. The line moved quickly and service was good. The bakery had good vibes with lots of bakery racks with a lot of product. Items were pricy, but each item was quite big. We got (from top left clockwise) Ham and cheese croissant, chocolate almond croissant, ube croissant swirl, supreme croissant, almond croissant (underneath croffle), pretzel dog. All were really good, my fav was the supreme croissant. Can't wait to come again!

Marina L.

Yelp
Inconsistent bakery. The almond croissant is very soggy and wet. Nothing special about their pastry. Sometimes is overly huge and other times it looks normal. Not worth it. I've noticed they're not as busy on Sunday's anymore at the farmers market in Walnut Creek. Expect to spend $7/$8 on a pastry.
google avatar

Samir K.

Yelp
Heard that this place was great at Farmer's Market and excited that now they are a brick and mortar! Very hidden away in a sleepy spot in Blackhawk near Garlex. Only one worker, so service was a little slow, but well worth it! This is as good as you will get in most places in the Bay, on the same level as Arsicault or B Patisserie in SF! Their menu has a variety of sweet and savory options. For our first time, we just got the baklava croissant, kouign amman, and the garlic cream cheese. The pastry was very delicate and tasted fresh, unlike some of the other places we've been. There was a bit of a line around 10:40/11 on a Sunday am, so I would suggest going early! Excited that this place is nearby!
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
I have heard so many great things about this bakery, and I'm finally glad I was able to try them. They finally have a brick and mortar location and not just their farmers market stands. I went to their bakery location and all the employees were so patient, helpful, and sweet. The young woman helping me was so polite and helped me choose the different pastries. I got one box for my house and one box for a family friend. Every single item we have tried has been DELICIOUS!! The one item I was most excited to try was the Pastrami and Cheese Croissant. I've grown up loving ham and cheese croissants, but 7 years ago I stopped eating pork. That was one item I really missed, as all places always have ham and cheese if they do have savory croissants. I was over the moon to hear they had pastrami instead of ham. This was by far the tastiest and flavorful savory croissant I have ever had! In fact, the pastrami had way more flavor than ham has ever had. The pastrami inside wasn't overwhelming and had a great balance of cheese and meat. The croissant was buttery and flaky! My waistline will hate me now that I have discovered it! My family scarfed down the almond croissants and they loved them. The Kouign-amann was out of this world and not overly sweet. It was so flaky on the outside, but a nice moist texture inside. Get the garlic cream cheese roll!! It was garlicky and cheesy, but with a hint of sweet. I actually ended up sprinkling some salt on it only because I wanted a salty flavor, but it was absolutely delicious the way it was. If you can, also try it warmed up in the microwave for 20 seconds. I had a little piece of it warmed up and it did not disappoint. However, it's tasty at room temperature as well. I can't wait to try the other pastries, but if they're anything like all the ones we have tried so far, I'm sure they'll be just as mind blowing.
google avatar

Lucy P.

Yelp
Promising, new bakery! I was only able to try one of their items but it was delicious and I'm looking forward to visiting again. Wish they had a wider spread of pastries on weekends :( Stopped by on an early Saturday afternoon with high expectations but was left a little disappointed unfortunately. Their sign outside lists a bunch of items (e.g. strawberry brioche, morning buns, cheddar brioche, kouign amann, apple danish) but when I went inside to order, I found they only had maybe 4-5 items total out of the 20 (?) they advertised. They only had: almond croissants, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate tahini cake, and some loaves of bread. I was super excited to try their advertised strawberry brioche and kouign amann, but they said they didn't hadn't baked any that day. I ended up buying their gluten-free chocolate tahini cake ($4), which was surprisingly delish and super moist but not too sweet, but I really wanted to try their other items. Maybe def come back again when their offerings expand.
google avatar

Trina M.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Glad we got to visit this place and come home with a box and a bag of pastries (the plan was to get 2 hahaha!). The almond croissant was crunchy, flakey, sweet and buttery, very delicious. The ube pastry was light and not so sweet, which paired nicely with a glass of almond milk (milk is from home). The place has no dine in only take out and no drinks either. However the young woman helping us was very nice and helpful. You can tell they put a lot of high quality ingredients in their food. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Delicious bakery items - it's hard to ever leave the store with just one. Their chocolate chip cookies are sooooo good too! They sometimes have specialty items too so it's worth coming back to try out something new! The had an Ube croissant that was out of this world !! Need that to be a regular item!
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
I feel so lucky to have this bakery in the neighborhood. I am absolutely hooked on the whole wheat seeded sourdough. It is full of seeds and makes a perfect breakfast for me, toasted, with coffee. The bread is dense and is super healthy and satisfying. The $10.00 price might sound high, but if you go to a supermarket and pick up a sourdough off the shelf you may pay $7-ish and not get the same freshness, taste or quality (in my opinion). I've frozen half a loaf and defrosted it later and it works great for me. I am also a scone lover and have had the raspberry scone several times - I pick one up before heading over to the Starbucks across the street!
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Really good. Fair variety. The Koign Amman (or however you spell it) is absolutely delicious. Well worth the calories!!!
google avatar

Linda Z.

Yelp
A lovely local business that I will visit over and over again! Stopped by on my way to Mount Diablo & pleasantly impressed. Staff is friendly. Baking area is visible to customers & is spotless! Croffle had an amazing crunch on the outside & soft on the inside. Almond croissant filling was creamy and divine. I can't wait to come back and try all the other yummy treats!
google avatar

Lin C.

Yelp
Wow, truly the most delicious and flakiest croissants I've had. I've been to a lot of bakeries with long lines where everything looks amazing and then sure it tastes good but not like ermagadsjfnsfn yummm like this place. No line on a Tuesday morning. Easy parking. Ham and Cheese Croissant 5/5 - divine, still slightly warm when I got it a bit before 9am Croffle 5/5 - loved the texture and how it's not too sweet, this one is not meant to be flaky due to its waffle exterior which means it's perfect for eating on the go without a million crumbs falling Ube Croissant 4.5?/5 - maybe it would've been a 5/5 if I wasn't so full from scarfing down the first 2 IDK I'll have to eat this first next time and update the score I want to go back and try their Indonesian desserts that are only offered on weekends. I also like that they have an instagram account @eastbaybakeryofficial. However, it seems like some items are available only for a limited time or on certain days but it's not clear when they'll be gone (ex. passionfruit supreme was posted on their insta a month ago saying it's a summer flavor but it wasn't available when I went today). I've seen some places post a daily pic of their menu with what's available (like an ice cream place posting a chalkboard sign of all the flavors for that day) so I think it would benefit them and their customers to do something similar because they have a chalkboard sign in front of their store with what's available. It would be great to see a pic of that on instagram before making the trip there. A daily post would also help them get more social media engagement and hopefully more love because they deserve it! Just a gentle suggestion. :)

Armenak E.

Yelp
Hands down the best bakery in the tri-valley area. It goes head to head with the likes of Fournée and Tartine. Our favorite go-to goodies are raspberry scone and almond croissants but you can't go wrong here anyway. So lucky to have them in our neighborhood.
google avatar

Soh Imm O.

Yelp
Wow at 9:30am on Sunday, there was already a long line outside the bakery. Got several baked goods for the family to try 1. Ube croissant - love how fluffy the croissant is on the inside and flaky on the outside. Nice ube flavor and adds a nice touch to the croissant. 2. Beef rendang pie. Love the beef rendang filling, a good savory option and one of the the family favorite 3. Scone- not too sweet and good amount of raspberry for the slightly tart flavor. Overall we love all the different baked goods and would be back again to try other baked goods
google avatar

Marc A.

Yelp
The desserts are outstanding. We keep coming back here for more and more pastries. You should try it out!
google avatar

Tariq Y.

Yelp
Very fresh . this was an amazing surprise. We were really looking forward to having a bakery in Danville
google avatar

Maya R.

Yelp
Yum! Actually read about this place in the newspaper and had to visit. It feels like a little neighborhood bakery, but has a modern feel with intriguing flavors that seem to change frequently. Bread and pastries were both great, definitely worth a try!
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
Have heard so much about this place so I stopped by on a Sunday morning around 11. There was hardly anything left except some brioche bread and chocolate or plain croissants. I bought a couple of chocolate croissants. They were $6 each but they were double the size of normal croissants. It was deliciously buttery and flakey but hardly any chocolate inside as you can see in the photo. I would be interested in trying some of their other items so I'll have to go earlier on another day.
google avatar

Nathania Y.

Yelp
so so glad that finally there is a legit pastry shop in danville/san ramon area. we came when they first opened and loved the space, presentation of the goodies were really nice and interesting, made me want to buy everything. i tried the ham&cheese croissant and the strawberry brioche. both were really good and my friends tried lots of their other stuffs and they said all were delicious. cannot wait to go back and try more pastries!

Janice C.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite bakeries in the Bay Area. Don't be fooled, if you think this is your hidden gem, this is everyone's gem! They have lines out the door on the weekends. I haven't had anything less than amazing. So far my faves are: Supreme croissant (strawberry) Croque monsieur Garlic cream cheese bread Olive bread Chocolate chip cookie Pastrami and cheese croissant Ube swirl Croffle Basically if you see something you like just grab it, it's likely going to be mind blowing. Kudos to the ladies that runs this!
google avatar

Cheri L.

Yelp
Yummy baked goods at the Farmer's Market (Walnut Creek)! Went to try their Indonesian dessert sampler which was very pretty and tasty. However, what I really loved was their Garlic Cream Cheese Bun. There was a lot of garlicky flavor and the cream cheese was the perfect complement for a little savory taste. Inside the bun was a good amount of slightly whipped cream cheese. The actual shell/bun was soft but with a slight crisp to it. If you get anything, I definitely recommend getting that. The prices are a bit high but I think it's worth getting once a while when you see them! There are a lot of people at the market by 11am so go early if you want something specific.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
So excited to have a bakery in the Blackhawk area! I stopped by today after hearing about EastBay Bakery on Nextdoor. The bakery is located in the shopping center with the McDonalds and near my favorite Thai restaurant Similian Thai. I ordered a koiugn amann and banh mi danish. Both were flaky and delicious. The owner mentioned there will be weekend specials, so I'll be back over the weekend. The hours are from 9-2 so you definitely have to work it into your schedule on weekdays.
google avatar

Cynthia T.

Yelp
Located in the same strip mall as McDonalds. Tried 4 pastries. Wanted to try the garlic bread, but they sold out! ‍ Chocolate Cream Brioche: $6 fluffy, crunchy and delicious chocolate cream inside! Tomato & Cheese Danish: $8 crispy! I needed something on the savory side since I missed out on the garlic bread. Apple Danish: $8 delicious & crispy, if you like apple pies, this is for you. Croffle: $5 if a croissant & waffle had a baby. It has a sugary glaze and it's super crispy. So good! They are also at farmers markets, they are listed on their Instagram page.
google avatar

Ray-Francis D.

Yelp
They make great pastries, the best in the area. My favorites are the Pastrami and Cheese Croissant, and Chocolate Almond Croissant. The Pastrami they use in their croissants is a good quality, and makes it great, but the croissant is so buttery and flaky. The Chocolate Almond Croissant is decadently sinful. I almost forgot about their Croffles! They are definitely a must have.
google avatar

Aneeta J.

Yelp
The pastries here are amazing. They really understand how to achieve good texture and mouth feel. We got a pretzel dog, a croissant with cream and chocolate, an apple danish, and a baguette. The croissant and baguette had a perfect balance of flavors. The apple danish had a great pastry filled with just the right amount of apple filling. The exterior crunchiness on the pretzel dog was balanced by a soft interior. There was something about the flavors of the sausage, the poppy seed and sesame (and maybe some onion?) that really brought it together. They clearly chose everything with intention and it was very easy to enjoy.
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Wow, we are so lucky to have this bakery nearby. I'd take a picture of what I got except that they are already eaten.

Patrick U.

Yelp
Fantastic bakery, with amazing choices and terrific staff! The focaccia was amazing. Highly recommend if you are looking for a local bakery in the Danville/San Ramon area.

Scott J.

Yelp
This is a great add to the area. Have tried 3-4 pastries and a scone. All were very well made and delicious. Lots to choose from. It's just a walk up and order place although they may have tables outside.
