The Best Restaurants In Bucktown - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Eat Fine Design’s menu is huge, but what’s most striking about this spot are the excellent Thai dishes you can’t find anywhere else. The durian massaman curry with a vanilla-y sweetness is a knockout, while their pad kee mao swaps the typical flat rice noodles for firm, crispy instant cup noodles—cup included for extra charm. The more common dishes are equally tasty, like Hat Yai fried chicken so crispy, you might need earplugs. Prime dinner time is often busy with couples from the area or friends sharing their favorite wine (it’s BYOB), but it’s easy to grab a spot a little later—Eat Fine Design is open until 2am." - john ringor, adrian kane, nick allen

The 20 Best Thai Restaurants In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Eat Fine Design’s menu is huge—if you ordered everything, it would probably fill up the whole restaurant, top to bottom. But what’s most striking about this BYOB Bucktown spot is the excellent Thai food you can’t find anywhere else. The durian massaman curry has an excellent vanilla-y sweetness, and their pad kee mao ditches the usual flat rice noodles for instant cup noodles—cup thrown in for extra charm. The more common dishes are also fantastic, like crispy Hat Yai fried chicken. It's often busy during prime dinner time with couples and friends from the area, but it’s easy to grab a spot a little later—especially since it's open until 2am." - john ringor, veda kilaru, adrian kane

Chicago’s Best Thai Food | Eater Chicago

"A new contender that opened in 2023 that replaced another Thai restaurant along Damen in Bucktown, Eat Fine Design by Khun Kung serves offerings atypically seen in Chicago’s Thai restaurants. That includes southern-style Thai fried chicken, a DIY papaya salad, and a duck roll. There are hints of Laotian and Vietnamese influences on the menu, as well. The experience is a bit different; ownership encourages dine-in customers to preorder their meals. The hoops are worth jumping through for Thai food lovers wanting something unique." - Ashok Selvam

Food Rundown Durian Massaman Curry The usual potatoes in massaman curry are sidelined so durian can have its moment. The result is one of our favorite dishes here—a less starchy curry with a unique sweetness that pairs perfectly with warming spices like star anise, cinnamon, and cardamom. photo credit: John Ringor Fire Noodle Chicago When this first lands on the table, a few “oohs” and “ahhs” will escape everyone’s mouths. But it’s the excellent flavor that will keep the amazed vocalizations going. As its name suggests, this is indeed spicy, but it’s got a lot more complexity thanks to some garlic, green peppercorns, and crispy basil. You get your choice of protein, too—opt for the immaculately tender beef rib. photo credit: Kuntima Waiyawuth" - John Ringor

Google
Eat Fine Design by Khun Kung is a culinary love letter to Thai flavors with a modern twist—and it’s seriously good. Every dish felt curated, balanced, and full of personality. But let’s talk about the calamari: hands down, some of the best I’ve had in Chicago. Lightly crisped, tender inside, and paired with a dipping sauce that actually made me pause mid-bite to appreciate the moment. The rest of the meal followed suit—bold flavors, elegant plating, and a vibe that’s both stylish and welcoming.

MUST GO PLACE. So authentic, great food, reasonable price, great service (not sure what ppl are complaining about). We had a reservation and preordered our menu the day before, so everything was well coursed out over a span of 2hrs. Must haves: Chive cakes, Duck red curry, Short rib noodle thing. Soooo good - duck red curry has lycee, grapes, pineapples that surprisingly balance out duck and spice. It was too good that we are planning on going back in 2weeks!!!

Each dish is very flavorful! A lot of spices used and you will have a great variety of fried, curry, and happy carbs! Reservation needed if you want to dine in. Parking on the street is available. I saw many people do takeout.

Every dish is full of flavor & so so good. Would definitely return to try other dishes. Service is A+++. Reservation is required as the place is small.

Chicago has been my second home since 1987. One thing I often look forward to is all of the amazing food the city has to offer. Unfortunately, my visit to Eat Fine was not one of them. While I server was very pleasant, it took incredibly long to receive our food. We ordered three appetizers and order of shrimp fried rice. A large party that came after us was served five entrees before we received our food. In fact, they were served my dumplings first. A server was going to actually serve them to me after another patron picked over them.I don’t know what was in my vegetable dumplings. My soup was good,. Too much great food and prompt service in this city to try this subpar eatery again.

Google
The food at Eat Fine Design matches some of the very best Thai we’ve ever had! The Kra Prow Puffs (chicken) were the standout dish and I could eat an entire meal of them! The pastry was hot and flaky and lent itself well to the filling inside. We also shared the Garlic Pork Ribs which were good but our least favorite dish. My Kra Prow Gai Khai Dao ground chicken dish was full of nuanced flavor and paired well with the fried egg and rice. The green curry had tremendous depth and “mild” still had a good amount of spice. Still thinking about how good the food was! Heads up this is reservation only. The woman behind the counter was working hard serving the entire dining room while also prepping to go orders. Can’t wait to stop in again for dinner!

We first came here because of the high reviews and we made a reservation by phone around 8pm. The receptionist told us to order food in advance so we followed the advice of the restaurant. We ordered 4 dishes and told the restaurant that there would be 4 of us to make sure there would be enough tables and food. However, when we arrived on time, there were no tables available. We had to wait 20 minutes to get a table. We then had to wait another 30 minutes for the first dish to arrive even though we had already ordered in advance. We were very hungry. Two of our friends decided to leave the restaurant and go to another restaurant nearby instead. My friend and I stayed. When the food arrived at our table we could barely eat it. The fried chicken was very salty and the fried fish had a strange taste and smell. The fish meat was not fresh. We were not sure if it was spoiled or not. The restaurant was very small and full of people waiting for a table. The restaurant smelled bad. Looking around the dining area, there were piles of leftover food and dishes on the empty tables. Customers had already eaten and left. We tried to get their staff's attention to inform them about the issue with the taste of the food we ordered but the staff was not friendly at all, and walked out of the dining area into the back of the restaurant for a long time. We noticed that the staff did not pay attention to us, and did not approach or look at our table. Luckily, two of our friends left so they didn't have to witness our bad experience. The food was presented well but the service and taste of the food was very disappointing. The price of the food was expensive and not worth what we paid, so it was not enough to make us come back for a second time.

Google
Eat Fine Design by Khun Kung offers an exceptional Thai dining experience in the heart of Chicago. The sleek, modern decor creates a welcoming atmosphere, while the food is a true standout. We started with the Tom Kha Soup, which was rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced with flavors of coconut, lemongrass, and a hint of spice. The Panang Curry was equally impressive—tender chicken in a fragrant, slightly sweet sauce that was comfort food at its finest. The Drunken Noodles were packed with flavor and the Fried Chicken Gyoza was crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. What truly made the experience special, though, was the exceptional service. The staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, making sure our meal was perfect from start to finish. They took the time to explain the dishes and even suggested pairings, which added a personal touch to our visit. Whether you’re a local or just visiting Chicago, Eat Fine Design by Khun Kung is a fantastic spot for high-quality Thai food and top-notch service. Highly recommend!

Yelp
They don't take walk-ins, so make sure to call to make a reservation! It's a small restaurant with limited staff, but the food was GOOD; we thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered: - Crispy Chive Cake: Really tasty and crispy... the perfect appetizer. - Durian Massaman Curry: As a durian lover, this dish is what I came for and it didn't disappoint-- the durian flavor is strong and there were sizeable chunks inside.... the curry was so rich and creamy. - Tom Yum Noodle Soup: Really really enjoyed this as well; the soup was so delicious and flavorful, and the noodles absorbed the flavors well. - Duck Red Curry: Quite good as well, but not as good as the other 2 entrees in my opinion; the duck was nice and crispy. - Durian Crepe Cake: Had to end the meal with durian too; this was solid, but kind of wish it had more durian flavor. It was quite pricey-- ~$45 per person, but it felt totally worth it and I'd gladly return to try more of the menu!!

Yelp
Eat Fine Design may not have the most attention-grabbing name, but it's hands down the best Thai restaurant I've come across in Chicago! The restaurant itself is cozy with a very friendly staff. The space accommodates about 5-6 groups at a time. It's worth booking a table ahead of time since they are always very busy, and it's nearly impossible to get a walk-in table before 8:30. The food here is truly exceptional, with each dish carrying unique flavors and plated beautifully. Among the appetizers, the crispy chives cakes stood out for their crispy exterior and gooey center, the crispy calamari for a delightful fish-flavored spice, the Eson sausage with a rich and porky taste, and the papaya salad for its incredibly refreshing taste. Moving on to the mains, the duck red curry featured crispy duck pieces and a medley of fruits, including lychees, pineapple, and grapes--an unexpectedly delightful combination. The durian Massaman curry packed a strong kick with creamy durian pieces. The Gway Teow offered a comforting noodle dish, and the basil tilapia was well-flavored with crispy pieces of tilapia. The fire cup packed a serious punch of heat, while the flavor was comforting. One standout feature is that all curry dishes come with a side of purple rice, offering a healthy alternative to the standard jasmine rice. It's worth noting that their spice levels are on a Thai scale, so even mild spice here can be quite spicy elsewhere. With such an extensive menu of unique Thai dishes of great quality, we can't wait to return and explore more of what they have to offer.

Yelp
Outstanding authentic Thai restaurant with excellent and friendly service. Family owned and run. We eat a lot of Thai, this was the best I've had in Chicago in years.

Yelp
Great authentic Thai food in Chicago. It's very small and it's the best to make reservations and order ahead of time. We ordered food after we arrived. The operation was small so service was slow. Food was phenomenal, authentic, great presentation and excellent flavor. Will come again!

Yelp
This place really surprised me! I was in general disappointed by Thai food in Chicago but this place has my heart now. The durian curry was absolutely amazing. Even one of our friends who doesn't eat durian loved the dish! And everything else we ordered was spot on too. I have gone there twice now and still love the food!

Yelp
We were here 6:30pm on Thursday, we were still waiting for our food when it was 8:10pm. The servicer attitude was horrible. I asked we were here for dinner about an hour and half, we were still waiting. And she said all the people came at the same time. However it is not! We ordered the papaya salad, it took forever for " appetizer"! And honestly, the food is not that great. I don't understand why does the restaurant 4.9 points on Yelp! Sorry and never again.

Yelp
We were there to celebrate my wife's birthday and They literally ruined it. Only one serve for the restaurant. She is nice but busy with pick up and NEVER checked on us after putting food on our table. They will automatically charge you 20% tips too with this kind of service. We have two younger kids and they made us waited for half an hour AFTER finish eating and we finally decided to leave without eating our cake. We had to ask multiple times to get our check and our table was not cleaned before giving us the desert. Food is super salty too and nothing special. We had many leftovers. Will never go back.

Yelp
We'd highly recommend this place! Very good and authentic Thai food! We got the milky tom yum (medium spicy level), and it's very very good! My partner also enjoyed his Hatyai fried chicken very much! We also got the Pad Thai wrapped in an omelette, noodle's al dente and the overall taste was very good as well.

Yelp
Best Thai food in Chicago!! Portions are generous and the quality and attention to detail are unmatched. My mom's friend recommended us this place and told us that the one chef in the back is an older lady that used to work at a Michelin starred restaurant. Her food did not disappoint and is well worth the wait. Be prepared to wait 45mins-2hrs for your food no matter how "slow" it may look. There's only one lady making all the dishes. They allowed us to call in our order ahead of time with our reservation so I highly recommend doing that before going! I eat all of my meals spicy and sour only so this was great for me. If you normally get mild to medium I would suggest getting the lowest spice level because that already has a big kick to it since they're using an authentic Thai spicy scale. If you normally eat spicy-extra spicy get medium!

Yelp
Probably the best or definitely too 3 at least spot in Chicago. Open late. On the more expensive side, but this seems consistent with the quality.

Yelp
Easily my favorite Thai spot in the city now! Went for an early dinner with some friends on Sunday and am trying to savor the leftovers! Service 5/5: the waitress might have been the only one working that night but was very attentive and was refilling our water throughout the dinner. Food 5/5 My go to at Thai places is usually panang curry. Ordered that with chicken and it came with a side of purple rice. They offer spice levels between 1-5, and I ordered a 2. It was the perfect amount of heat without being inedible. Also extra points for adding peas to it (I personally love green peas in curries). My fiancé ordered the pra ram rong song which also came with purple rice (the pic has blue rice but they said they ran out - not a problem). It reminded her very much of kare kare, a peanut based Filipino dish. She absolutely loved it! She enjoyed that the peanut sauce came on the side so you can control how much you add. Included some greens and a different kind of sweet chili paste that complimented well with the peanut sauce and chicken. We shared the fish cakes (tod mun pla) and those are always a hit! Love the cucumber salad sauce it came with to dip. A friend ordered the prawn pad Thai with egg wrap and the prawn Tom yum soup. The shrimps were well in size and loved that the pad Thai wasn't drowning in too much sauce. Super flavorful and the best Tom yum soup we've had in awhile! Will definitely be coming back, especially since they also have a lunch deal!

Yelp
So good!! I came by around lunch time mid-week while running errands in the mood for something spicy. They delivered and I've been thinking about it for days now. The lunch specials are well priced with a nice portion size, I ordered the lunch set 1, choosing the red curry with chicken, spice level 5 as well as the shake fries with hot & spicy seasoning. The fries came out first, crispy and covered in the seasoning which was a mix of salty and spicy, very delicious! The curry was perfectly spicy, if you like spicy foods you'll enjoy it. The lunch portion came with a nice amount of chicken, as well as plenty of veggies (bamboo shoots, long beans, peppers, eggplant, and basil, as well as chili peppers of course) the eggs and rice was a perfect accompaniment. I ended up ordering too much with the fries, so I brought both the fries and the remainder of my entree home. Well worth my money. Thanks for a great lunch and lovely service! I'll be back soon!!

Yelp
If I could give more than five stars I would. This place is so good! Every item was delicious with generous portions. The staff is attentive and friendly! They are a wonderful little family business that's definitely worth the visit. Tons of vegan and vegetarian friendly options. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Nothing short of spectacular. I've been a massive Thai food fiend for over a decade. This place is easily top 3.

Yelp
Food was great but the order took over 2 hours to deliver to us They also forgot 2 items from our order as well. Which is why I gave it 4 stars.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic Thai food, this is your place! My boyfriend and I ate here two nights in a row. The chef really knows what she's doing, the flavors are so bold, I feel like I'm transported to Thailand. The first night we had the special pad thai, the noodles were perfectly done, has a little chewiness like it should and has the smokiness most places are missing. Flavor is on point. We then decided to try the gai yang meal with papaya salad and sticky rice, all for I think was $30. What a steal. Papaya salad was solid with crispy chicken, well seasoned. I usually prefer grilled gai yang though. But the next night we had the hat yai chicken, and goodness!! I was surprised how juicy it was!! Amazing, I'm usually the one that never orders chicken cause I'm scared it'll dry out. Beef salad was delicious too! Sauces for all the dishes are perfect. That hot pot though, I've never had Thai hot pot like that before and was pleasantly surprised how flavorful the vegetable broth was. I wasn't missing the meat at all. It was so aromatic with kaffir lime leaves, dill, mushrooms... I definitely will be back for this. Iced green Thai tea and regular Thai tea were both fantastic. My boyfriend had the matcha latte with mango sauce... and I will be getting the mango sauce next time. The variety is overwhelming to choose but just makes me excited to try the entire menu. The chef likes to change up the menu too so it'll keep things fresh. Nice family owned restaurant, great people. Only thing is they just opened this week so there are some kinks to work out with timing. We waited quite awhile for our food the first night but with those flavors... totally worth it! We were so full each night, we didn't even get to try the desserts yet... until next time.

Yelp
Was looking for a bite in the area and I'm a sucker for dumplings. Had the Kanom Jeep (chicken and pork shumai) and they were delicious. Two thumbs up.

Katelyn S.

Yelp
My fiancé and I got this for delivery on a chilly night when we wanted something warm, spicy, and comforting and Eat Fine Design hit the spot!! We got the pad see ew, yellow curry, and spring rolls and everything was so delicious. Excited to have a new Thai spot in Bucktown.

null n.

Yelp
We went to Thailand for 2 weeks and had a huge craving for Thai food. The food we had comes very close to the real deal. Ive had many Thai food places in Chicago land area and this one takes the cake. What I got: Khao soi chicken basil fried rice drunken noodle

Matt V.

Yelp
Amazing food! Wonderful atmosphere. Servers very attentive. Must call ahead to book reservations ahead of time as the restaurant does not have much seating availability.

Matt ..

Yelp
A great addition to bucktown with very authentic, tasty Thai food. They have Guay Tiew Kua Gai and I'm happy to report it is really close to the dish you would get in Bangkok - the noodles were on point with slightly crispy edges and a great chew. The Tom Kha and chicken noodle soups were also delicious. I cannot wait to try more of the menu. Some weirdness with the timing of my pickup order, but a quick phone call straightened it out.
google avatar

Sydney N.

Yelp
Have dined in here twice and the food is definitely the best Thai in Bucktown! We've been waiting for a place like this to open. The sign for Gin Sen is still up here, but it's Thai now. Staff is very friendly and quick to take orders, but seem to be short staffed and bogged down with lots of take out orders, so food does take a while. Both times we went, we were pretty much the only people in the restaurant, so we were surprised that it took 30-45 min to get our food. The second time we went, we were trying to catch a show and ended up scarfing our food down pretty quickly to get out of there on time, which was a bummer. I'll definitely return when I don't have somewhere to be after, but I think this place would do better for dine-in if they had another hand in the kitchen. The staff is great, is clearly working very hard, and I know it can be difficult to get staff these days, so it's understandable. The food is really excellent - produce is fresh, they do a nice job with the details too! I'd recommend the pad Thai and drunken noodle.
google avatar

Charitza V.

Yelp
I'll be calling you all....again. and again... so frigging tasty. So polite.. so thoughtful. From wrapping everything in foil to labeling everything and being so very nice. Definitely give them a shot. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Authentic Thai food!! After a long day trip, I have been craving for authentic Thai spicy food and found this place. I was so lucky that I could order with them even it was late night. I've asked them to make my order Thai spicy and They made Yum woonsen tasted just like in Thailand. I can say it's the best yum woonsen I've had in the states. They are so generous with ingredients and the portion. You can tell that they cook the food for you with heart.

N P.

Yelp
Food was delicious and fresh! Love the option to preorder your food. Service was friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Rachel T.

Yelp
Delicious Thai food! Amazing presentation and lovely service. Would definitely recommend dialing back on spice level depending on your tolerance! Our server made awesome recommendations and our meals were excellent. This will definitely be our go-to Thai spot for dinner and/or a quick boba stop!

Paula L.

Yelp
I came into the restaurant around 1am... and the woman who took care of my boyfriend & I was so sweet and welcoming and I felt bad because it was late and they close at 2am but she made me feel more comfortable and enjoy the food even more.... My boyfriend got the Tom Kha soup just to try something new and he got mild spice option... it was soooooo good i was super impressed by the amount of flavor in the soup, I never had a soup like that and it also had cilantro in it which tasted amazing. I got the chicken pad thai and I asked the woman and I believe the chicken is halal... I got medium heat and it was very good it's the best pad thai I've ever tasted and this is my go to thai place from now on. They put the perfect amount of sauce, noodles were so good it was very well done!! And even at 1:50am the woman taking care of us asked if we wanted desert too, it was so sweet and mind you it was 1:50am and they close at 2am. I never been to a place so hospitable omggg. Thank u sm will be back.

Joseph M.

Yelp
Extremely delicious, fresh food prepared wonderfully and presented impeccably. And they're open really late! Family owned and operated. A gift to Bucktown.

Lisa W.

Yelp
Best Thai food I've had in the city. Food is authentically spicy. Portions are generous. Eaten here twice and will be back!

Yelp
The three of us went here after a late movie since they were open till 1. It was 85 degrees and they had no AC. We should have just taken it to go.. my padseeew beef was delicious although when they asked for a preferred spice level from 1-5 I picked 3 but didn't taste any spice. My friends chicken dish was also delicious but their spice level was a lot more spicy than preferred. Now the last friend ordered a special menu curry dish that the waitress recommended but came out after the rest of us finished our dish. The main kicker here was that the potatoes and carrots were RAW!!! When they asked how it was we just let them know and nobody even blinked an eye or apologized. It was quite disappointing. And the roti for an extra two dollars were dropping in oil. I don't know if we went on an off day or what but we probably won't be coming back anytime soon unfortunately. I would recommend getting the very basic dishes if you're gonna try it out!

Russ K.

Yelp
Best Thai food I've had since I was in Thailand. The ingredients are true to Thai cuisine and service is great. The secret is out, so go on a weekday.

Lindsey B.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh. The portions were plentiful, and the food arrived hot. I would highly recommend.

Max S.

Yelp
Some of the best Thai food in the city!!! They are so nice here and everything is so delicious. Portions are also huge!

Yelp
I've been a lurker on yelp for years, but I finally found a restaurant worth writing my first review for! The food is incredibly authentic and the flavor of depth is incredible. Honestly the best Thai food I've ever had. I wish there were more reviews to keep their business going strong, because I'll be ordering from here every time I visit Chicago. You can sense the passion and pride in every dish. Please give them a try!

Yelp

Yelp
Gave them a shot and was very impressed. Loved that they are vegan friendly and had multiple options. We're not disappointed. At first thought the portions were a bit small for the price but was so filling. Sorry no pic was too hungry and forgot to take a picture. Staff was super friendly too :) will be back and won't forget a picture. The cashew vegan chicken was delicious and had a kick to it....yummy

Yelp
Very delicious authentic Thai food staff is extremely friendly.
