Get Your Fish and Chip Fix at These Nashville Restaurants

"Don’t skip this North Nashville dive on your fish and chips tour. Although the options here skew more Southern and less English, it’s been around for decades — and for good reason. You can grab a plate of whiting fish, which deviates from tradition with its side of homemade spaghetti, or opt for a catfish basket served with fries." - Kellie Walton

Where to Find Non-Chain Drive-Thru Food in Nashville

"The steering wheel-sized whiting sandwiches are the star of the show in the cash-only, drive-thru spot in North Nashville. The sandwiches come topped with onion, hot sauce, and mustard here, but many also choose to add cheese. Catfish is another popular option here — as are the multiple flavors of fruit tea." - Delia Jo Ramsey

I just moved to Tennessee from Massachusetts and one thing I’ve been missing is fresh fish! Ed’s fish house hit the nail on the head for me. The food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the whitefish sandwich with fried okra and potato salad. It was hands down the best thing I’ve ordered since being here. The drive throw is a little small but very efficient and the line moves quickly, the staff are very welcoming and friendly as well. I can’t wait to go back! Most try the mango ice tea is delicious!

Google
10 FREAKIN 10 I’m here from Houston !! Catfish was fried perfectly .. I’ll be back tomorrow lol Oh and Momma B this flavor is bomb I need a gallon!!

Google
I can’t comment on the atmosphere because I never went inside the building. The service was great, but if you ask for your food, a particular way, please fix it that way everybody does not like hot sauce on their fish one do not like spicy food for you to automatically put hot sauce on peoples Fish is crazy to me then she wouldn’t even rectify the problem. I hate to discontinue my service with them many years I’ve been going to this place today is my last day no more Ed’s fish for me. You should always want to satisfy your customers but I guess for her it’s all about the money.

Google
The food was great. I had whiting fish with white beans and fries. The beans had onions in them so it wasn’t good but the fish itself was PERFECTION.(remember guys to reduce the use of plastic because it gets into our oceans and fresh water and our fish eats the plastic and that’s how we get microplastics inside of us)🫡

Google
The best single thing I ate in Nashville. You can tell Ed's is an establishment when you roll up at lunchtime by the line of cars. The signage tells you they've been specializing in the whiting fish sandwich since the 1970s and you owe it to yourself to find out why. The whiting fish sandwich is probably the best sandwich I've ever gotten from a drive thru, and it might be there best fried fish sandwich I've ever had. Between two white bread slices are a generous and perfectly fried four fillets slathered with spicy mustard, onions, and ketchup. It is big and has to be held together with a toothpick. It is also super simple and sometimes simplicity wins over all . You should not leave Nashville without eating at Ed's!

Google
Best fish sammich in the world always hot fresh and delicious. The owner use to hang with my mom while attending Tennessee State in 70s. So I’ve been coming here for yrs. It’s a staple in our household. I tell my buddies to get the spaghetti on side with your sammich and don’t forget some Cole slaw can’t go wrong. Good country eatin yes sir

Google
Every time I go here, it's an amazing experience. The staff is very welcoming and the food is phenomenal! Would highly recommend to anybody. Please get the whiting sandwich and you'll thank me later 💪🏾

Google
i was a little skeptical at first because it’s just a drive thru but my order was taken with a smile and the staff was so kind! the fish was fresh and HOT. the batter is great and the fried okra was my favorite side. we also had hushpuppies and coleslaw which were also great. will definitely be back!

Yelp
I have been eating Ed's whiting fish for over 40 years. It has been good every time I have had it. No complaints here.

Yelp
This is a must stop at place when visiting Nashville. The fish is just so good and cooked to perfection. I had to come back to get a whiting sandwich and catfish sandwich with everything. The service is quick and prompt drive thru. You won't get an ambiance because you can only visit the drive through. Come try yourself.

Yelp
Yes...I highly recommend this spot..I drive home from Chicago to Atlanta and this is always a destination stop when I go through.. HEY YOU A SANDWICH FAST LOL LOL

Yelp
I've been wanting to go here for a while. Always past by because of the long lines. I'm currently 26 at the time of this review and I remember being about 5 and my mom would always have some catfish and spaghetti from Nashville. She worked in Nashville and would come here for lunch or after work. I didn't know the name of the restaurant but it wasn't that difficult to find. The sandwich tastes exactly how I remember. Didn't care too much for the spaghetti, the taste was different. Very pricey for a little cup, $4?

Josh H.

Yelp
Absolutely the best fried whiting fish I've ever had! Ordered the whiting sandwich, soooo amazing and if I'm ever back in the Nashville area Ed's will be at the top of my to do list.

Sylvia M.

Yelp
The worse food that I've ever had! Yesterday was my first & last time there. I told the order taker it was my first time & she didn't make any recommendations. I ordered the 2 piece whiting & double fries. I said no to everything except hot sauce, not knowing they would put it on my FISH! I didn't receive double fries, but instead something that looked like Chef Boyardee spaghetti! My fish wasn't crispy, but it was soft & covered in hot sauce!! Save your money!!

Sarah B.

Yelp
Worst fish meal I've had in 20 years. The fish was OLD, & NASTY!! We ordered 2 Fish & chips meals, received Fish, no fries, & strawberry cheese cake. Hot cake eith no strawberry's & the fish was old & it STANK!! Fir FIFTY DOLLARS?!? Sent us No strawberry's. No fries,

Amber J.

Yelp
First visit in years. Service was excellent and so was the fish! We will be back. Disappointing that they ran out of dessert.

K K.

Yelp
Outstanding. Lived down the street on the Fisk campus, across from DuBois Hall. Father worked at the University. The house has long since been torn down and apartments built. This was in the late 70s. Old man would sometimes go to Ed's on the weekend to pick up lunch. Always loved the cornmeal whiting, mustard, pickles and onions. Glad to see it's still going strong.

Yelp
Went to this location on order 4 pieces of catfish only ,lady at take out window tried to charge me $26.00,I told her, that the price was $16.38,a few days ago she looked funny at me when I showed my order receipt for $16.38,from 2 days ago.

Yelp
The one star is not for the food but the fact that it's listed as open on a Monday when in fact they are/were closed and the fact that I found out after leaving my hotel and traveling to the location; I called several times and received no answer & checked various other food apps. Very annoying because I then had to figure out a back up option in an area that has nothing else to do... I walked up Buchanan street and waited another 30mins for another location to open up . Again, there is nothing else to do in the area so am very angry about wasting my time. In regards to finding the location, I am unsure of how people missed it when it's literally on the corner and the only location there, across from a Machanic shop.

Yelp
**4.5** As a Nashville unicorn, it's safe to say fried catfish is one of the most important parts of a healthy, balanced meal. Even though I rarely eat fried catfish, Ed's little eatery was calling my name and I decided to go out and get some for lunch. Let me warn you that this is a pretty hidden hole-in-the-wall place and you'll pass it if you're not paying attention (like I almost did twice in a row). After turning around and following the path to the end of the rainbow, I finally found the pot of gold. Parking is a bit of a struggle too, since the parking lot is pretty much directly on the street, but they do have a drive thru if you'd rather not risk the struggle of parking. The people here are super nice and friendly and talk to anyone there, whether you're a regular or a newbie. Not only were they a family owned business, but they were also pretty busy which I was happy to see. I'll also warn you that you'll have to bring cash, since they don't have card or check readers, unfortunately. Nevertheless, I decided to go with the catfish plate, which automatically comes with mustard, hot sauce, onions, and pickles on the fish. It also comes with 2 pieces of bread and 2 sides of your choice: either fries, slaw, or... wait for it... spaghetti. Yes, you can get spaghetti as a side! (and it was really good) The fish was fried very well and wasn't overly thickly or thinly battered. My fries ended up being a little soggy, but it was bound to happen after a 20 minute car ride back home. Definitely try it out one day for fun. It was pretty freakin good and I finished the entire plate.

Yelp
I was skeptical of this place after seeing pictures, the plain bread on top of fried fish just didn't look appealing. But after having it recommended so many times, I went for it and I'm glad I did. The fry on the fish was a work of art, absolutely gorgeous and perfectly fried. The breading to fish ratio was spot on, very flavorful without being overbearing, crispy, generous portions, and extremely affordable. I fish and cook fish on a frequent basis, I spend a lot of time on the California coast indulging in fresh fish, and this fish has to be the best fried fish I've ever had.
google avatar

Clay G.

Yelp
Had the fish sandwich. It was good, but I like the whiting sandwiches you can get at 400 degrees or helens a lot better. Some tabasco is ok, but I like it a little spicier.
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
Oh my!!! Ed's Fish House is an experience worth having!!! I used to visit this vicinity every month when the original 400 Degrees was starting up. And if you're brave enough to drive deep into North Nashville, you will be richly rewarded with ultra crispy catfish, impeccable french fries, and a uniquely scrumptious spaghetti. I've always wanted to try Ed's, so I drove all the way from Brentwood, strolled in, and started inquiring about a Wings and Catfish Basket I had read about online. The sweet girl taking my order was so kind-hearted as she explained that I was thinking of the other Ed's in Antioch, also owned by the same family. At the North Nashville location, it's short and simple; fish sandwiches and chicken sandwiches. And they don't have a website. :) She patiently explained what they offered and I selected the catfish dinner; two large filets with two sides (cole slaw, fries, or spaghetti, opting for the latter two). As I waited, I soaked in the atmosphere, the quintessentially charming, hole-in-the-wall, old school, neighborhood restaurant with an atmosphere that indicates you've found a real gem. They've been serving catfish since 1972 and every true Nashvillian has to come here once. Local residents come in for great food, or just sit at the counter and shoot the breeze. I was a complete stranger, and yet patrons and employees alike were incredibly welcoming. Why can't everyone get along like this? And I greatly appreciated the perfect 100 health score on the wall! The food came out quickly and cost precisely $10, a nice round number and worth every penny! One bite of super crispy, perfectly-battered, high quality catfish on white bread with pickles and some hot sauce was all it took for Ed's to win my heart. The shoestring fries with a dash of mustard are really good. And there is something magical about that spaghetti. It's not like the stuff you get at some fancy Italian restaurant or a dish crafted by some chef trained at a culinary school. It's just simple, homemade comfort food with a tasty sauce that just warms your heart. Go experience this fabulous fish house with simple and amazing food and the nicest people.

Yelp
This place was highly recommend by several people so, I had to try it. I was disappointed because they advertise catfish but, they serve Swai. This may work for others but, I want US Catfish not Swai. I don't like being mislead by advertising catfish. I am in the food industry so, I am pretty familiar with the difference. If I had known this was Swai, I would have tried the whiting. Once I arrived, I saw they only accept cash so, I had to go to Dollar General to buy something and get cash back. I later realized there was an ATM in the shopping center near Helens Chicken but, this was not a big issue but be prepared so, have your cash ready no credit cards. The food was hot but, if you don't tell them no hot sauce or to place it on the side they dump it on your fish. That was a problem for me but once I looked at the fish and realized it was Swai it wouldn't have mattered. I will say the service was prompt, the food came out hot and the employee I met at the window of the drive through was pleasant. Because, they gave me spaghetti but, I wanted french fries so, they gave me an order of fries with no hassle. I will support black owned and operated businesses so, I will be back but I will order the whiting.
google avatar

Shea T.

Yelp
This place is like coming home from college & getting a meal only your mamma can make. I'm a vegetarian and the whiting (friend hard) caused me to backslide. I asked for fries (which are perfectly seasoned), but when I saw the sandwich, I had to pinch the fish...and when I did, that sandwich disappeared . It's on white bread. I'm telling you, YOU WANT THIS! Don't leave Nashville without one.

Tonya P.

Yelp
We wanted some good hot fish during our visit to Nashville so our son took us to Ed's. The drive through service was quick although they cook the fish when ordered. Just be mindful that the onions, pickles, hot sauce, and mustard come on the fish unless you request otherwise. It was so good!
google avatar

Micah R.

Yelp
Amazing Fried Catfish, super friendly staff. I highly recommend this place. It's well worth the drive if you're not in the area. I've never had Tabasco with mustard on top of the catfish before, only Tabasco, but I gotta say I was weirded out by the mustard and it was great. The cornmeal breading and season were absolutely on point!
google avatar

Rob Z.

Yelp
Man. So living in Memphis (and Brooklyn before that) I of course sort of hate Nashville. But this, so fresh and hot from the fryer that it kind of stung my lap through the wrapping paper as I ate it sitting in my car in the Family Dollar parking lot across the street, was one of the best things I've ever eaten.
google avatar

Njeri P.

Yelp
The food was absolutely AMAZING! I ordered the whiting sandwich sans the hot sauce. I'm from NYC. I've never had mustard and pickles on a whiting sandwich, but it was soo good. The strawberry mango tea was also very delicious. The ambiance was great. You can tell that it's a community spot. Everyone was talking to each other. I also noticed that they honored and showcased the HBCUs in Tennessee. I definitely will come back the next time I'm in Tennessee! Sorry I don't have pics! I scarfed down the food.
google avatar

Najah S.

Yelp
Spaghetti was watery. The catfish tasted sweet, almost made me vomit. I would not recommend.
google avatar

Syber G.

Yelp
I come here every time I come to Nashville. This place is NO FRILLS, NO NONSENSE & CASH ONLY. You can order fish, chicken or spaghetti. White or wheat bread. Chess pie is offered for dessert. For my entire life, I've only ever gotten the fried fish sandwich, it's my favorite on the planet. I probably have a nostalgic attachment to this particular culinary delight; it reminds me of backyards, church basements, Frankie Beverly & Maze, cornrows and Jheri curls... more than anything, this sandwich reminds me of home. Come here if you want a taste of the real. Order the crispy whiting sandwich and have them add a little coke slaw on the sandwich. Thank me later.

Mahogany L.

Yelp
I've never had fish with cheese and mustard. All I can say is that the catfish sandwich blessed my soul!. That is all!
google avatar

Victoria H.

Yelp
Fish ok, spaghetti taste like tomato sauce, and fries flavorless and cooked to hard. The server out in parking lot non-engaging and not helpful but the man at the window was friendly. I thought food probably was the bomb how the cars was pulling in. Never judge a book by its cover.
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
Best fish in Nashville. Hands down! Cash only! Fast drive thru! Deliciousness !!!!! I would definitely recommend! :)
google avatar

Alex J.

Yelp
If you're in Nashville for a conference or trip you should come here and check out an authentic local eatery. Ed's cooked me a superlative catfish sandwich in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The cornmeal crust on the catfish had an incredible crunch and the fish itself was light, flaky and tasty! Get out of the tourist trap overpriced restaurants downtown and come check out this place, it is where the locals eat!

JC J.

Yelp
Decided to try a neighborhood spot. If you are not paying attention, you could miss it. Just look for people in line. The people who work here are supper nice and friendly. We tried the catfish plate. It was outstanding. The fish was fresh and well seasoned and fried to perfection.

Sean M.

Yelp
Excellent quality. Whiting platter with fries and cole slaw was exceptional. Small establishment focusing on a few core competencies that work well.

Lama M.

Yelp
I'd give this place 5 stars if the ordering/ customer service was better. The catfish was excellent. The spaghetti was decent enough. The service though? It was drive thru only. I said what I wanted a catfish sandwich plate and a diet coke. I asked what sides came on the plate. No one ever answered. I finally just drove up to the window in hope. I asked my question again and was told the sides. What if I had saved to change it? They didn't get that I wanted a drink ,so I asked for that again and paid separately. I was not given change. It was only 50 cents, ....but just the idea... Maybe an off day. I'd probably go again... with exact change and knowing what to expect
google avatar

Hattie J.

Yelp
My favorite place to go when i'm craving a fish sandwich! Two pieces of white bread, with a huge slab of fish, some mustard, hot sauces, and pickles. (I have them add a slice of cheese to mine). Make sure to bring cash! Oh, and yeah, they haven't served pizza there in at least 10 years, if not more!
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
We moved to this area about 2 years ago, and although Ed's is right up the street from our home, we frequent Seafood Sensations across from TSU, because, well, the food can highly recommended, and we ended up loving it. So in an attempt to branch out and support more local business-- we have Ed's a try. My husband got the whiting platter with spaghetti and coleslaw. Let's start with the fish. It was fried nicely, golden brown and crispy. But had NO flavor. I mean ZERO seasoning. Unless you drown your fish in hot sauce, you may as well eat a fried sock. The spaghetti. GROSS. It literally tastes like soggy noodles mushed into tomato sauce straight from the can. Not the good kind, lol, but the plain kind waiting to be seasoned and simmered for hours. But it wasn't. Lol. The coleslaw. It was OK. Again, very tasteless and bland. I really cannot believe that in a town with so much great fried fish-- this place is still open. Many of the reviews talk about how it's been here since the 70's, and maybe it was great then, but not so much now. If you want fried fish on this side of town, go to Seafood Sensations or TJ's. East side? Boltons or Lil Cee's. Ed's gets 2
google avatar

Yvette L.

Yelp
Okay, this restaurant has been around for years. Its not fancy, there is very limited seating and they only take cash. BUT they have the best Fish Sandwiches in town! Hell, the best that I have ever eaten. Don't let the area or the lack of bells and whistles fool you, their Fish sandwiches are "hella good"! You get a large portion of fish on white bread with mustard, onions, pickles and hot sauce and I guarantee you will love it!!! I have been going once a week and I am a food snob.
google avatar

Ellyot T.

Yelp
Been going to Ed's since I was a child. I moved out of state as of 2012, but anytime I visit home I go to Ed's for a fish sandwich. The only thing I usually get from there is a fish sandwich (whiting or catfish) with cheese, hot sauce, and mustard. There's always plenty of fish on the sandwich and it's always fresh. Nothing fancy or special, it's your traditional fish sandwich. I love it.
google avatar

Epiphany P.

Yelp
Change the time. They close at 615. Open light was on, door unlocked but i was told it was closed. Please update times on Yelp and social media.
google avatar

Chad R.

Yelp
Really amazing catfish. Highly recommend it. Nothing spectacular on the outside but amazing food.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Where else can you get a giant delicious fish sandwich with a side of spaghetti? It's weird but I am not complaining. Great food and service.
google avatar

Carolyn B.

Yelp
I love this place. The fried fish is so good. I love going to Ed's me and my son will just love getting our fried fish sandwiches from here. They have the seasoning just right and they fry the fish to perfection. This is definitely my go to for Fried Fish. I love this place. The service is great. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Carla V.

Yelp
Ok has Ed's ever served pizza. Chess pie is divine. They are fancy now upgraded to white paper bags. I remember Ed's from childhood the drive in menu is hand painted and you yell your order through the window. There is always someone in the lot asking for bus fare or wanting to wash your windows for a tip but it just adds to the nostalgia. I honestly don't like whiting or white bread but there is something about how they put it together that brings tears to my eyes it's so good. Always the sandwich never the platter fish just hangs off the bread. So much fish can't eat the sides so save your money get the sandwich. Order two so you can have one for your ext meal.
google avatar

Dorinda C.

Yelp
You have to love Ed's fish! My husband has been going for longer than I've known him. Teenage and college memories. I had to see what all the talk was about. It was the best best sandwich I've ever had. Every time we are in Nashville, we stop at Ed's. Cash only

Michael E.

Yelp
We had driven in from Atlanta and needed lunch. This was an unexpected gem. There is only one 4 top in the place so you may need to take it out. They require cash so be prepared. This time of year the selections were limited to whitting and catfish. My wife had the first and I had the catfish. Both were great. She regretted not getting the onions and pickles on her order.

Danielle D.

Yelp
FANTASTIC catfish sandwich. My boyfriend and I just moved to North Nashville from Philadelphia. Saw this place on my drive home one day and googled it to discover they had awesome reviews, so we decided to give it a shot. They have an inside and a drive through. Great prices for good, authentic, no fancy-shmansy fish and chicken. Cash only though! I highly recommend stopping by this place! Thanks Ed's!!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
They were nice, but really, this place is nothing amazing. It is a little strange that they are called "Ed's Fish & Pizza House", have pizzas painted on the outside, and makes it very clear that they do not serve pizza anymore as soon as you go in. Kooky. Anyway, came here with a friend as we were hunting some new places get some fish (I generally gravitate to Bolton's) and after running back to a bank to get some cash, we got the fish sandwich. I think I got catfish and my buddy got whiting, standard deal, fish, yellow mustard, dill pickle chips (I got extra) and white onions on top of white bread. Skipped the American cheese because gross. Got greens and french fries as my sides, they were pretty good, and the sandwich was good too, but no spice. When we asked if they could make it spicy as we placed our orders, they kind of looked at us funny. But they did have hot sauce you could put on it, but no face melting would be had that day. Bring some small bills and change too, because beverages are only served from a vending machine onsite. All in all, a good fish sandwich, but not worth the time when you live in the same burg as Bolton's. CASH ONLY.
google avatar

Willie S.

Yelp
A North Nashville tradition since 1972, serving fresh hot fish sandwiches, catfish and whiting, fries, spaghetti and coleslaw. What makes something so simple worth having? Two large pieces that hang of the bread so much, they might break when you pick it up, dressed with hot sauce, onion, dill pickle and cheese or without. And pizza? Well, let's just say what's in a name. They haven't sold pizza for years but the name stuck. Anyone that does not know this is not from here! So first timers, don't embarrass yourselves by asking! Be prepared, cash is the currency of the day but rest assured you won't be hungry an hour later.
google avatar

Alneada B.

Yelp
My mom is a proud Fisk grad who would drag me to Ed's Fish on every trip we took to Nashville growing up and I never understood her obsession with this place... That is, until I became old enough to appreciate that Ed's Fish has the best whiting fish sandwich this side of the Mississippi. It's freshly fried and always accompanied by great customer service. Ed's Fish is an underrated Nashville gem so if you get a chance, do yourself a favor and pay this place a visit. Favorites: the whiting fish sandwich with mustard, hot sauce, and onions with the shoestring fries. Two words: nom nom

Samuel B.

Yelp
Where do I start....Ed's is an experience, and product, that people of all races, gender, shapes and sizes who love soulfood and southern cuisine should try. I've had both the white fish sandwich and the catfish. Both are quite wonderful, but I prefer the lighter, cleaner flavor of the white fish. Pour on the hot sauce and enjoy one of Nashville's best kept secrets. The service is great too, with an incredibly friendly and talkative staff. There's not a lot of seating inside, so you may have to take out. Also, be prepared to wait a few min if you go during lunch or dinner.
google avatar

CL T.

Yelp
Ed's Fish sandwiches are always included in the stories that my parents tell. They attended the HBCUs in the neighborhood in the 70s. I really like the sandwiches. It's one of those cash only, everyone's parents went there when they were my age type of place. Any time that I visit home for more than a weekend, I make sure to stop by and get a sandwich. They have more on their menu but that's all I want.
google avatar

Ally M.

Yelp
Great service and delicious fish. It may be in a part of town you don't frequent but it's definitely worth the trip
google avatar

Samuel B.

Yelp
Best fish sandwich I've had anywhere. And the people are great different cultures and it's a real locally owned business not a chain. If you don't like it I'll pay for your food .
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
A Nashville tradition. Hole in the wall, very little seating. Cash only. Fish sandwich is spot on. I am rating based on comparables. If you want a north Nashville fish sandwich, no tartar sauce, no cheese, this is your place; authentic and delicious.
