The Best Indian Food in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"Philly vegans love Ekta for the clearly labeled meat- and dairy-free dishes — like veggie samosas and lentil-based offerings — on its menu. The Fishtown location is a favorite for ordering delivery, and the West Philly location has an affordable buffet with plenty of vegetarian dishes." - Ernest Owens

Ekta Indian Cuisine Review - Fishtown - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Due to a mix-up at the post office, you’ve suddenly received all twelve bottles from your “wine of the month club” at once. Bring the case and some friends to Ekta on Girard, where you can put a dent in your wine surplus (it’s BYOB here) and eat some good Indian food at the same time. Between the big portions and family-style option, this place works especially well for big groups. Go with the biryani and the spicy Goan shrimp curry, along with some extra naan to mop up the sauce." - Jordan Price

Google
I ordered the Saag Paneer and was honestly shocked by how it tasted. I’ve had Saag Paneer from many different restaurants, and this one was nowhere close to what it should be. It was overwhelmingly sweet — which completely threw off the flavor — and didn’t taste anything like traditional Saag Paneer. They seriously need to tone down the sweetness. Also, the dish barely had any actual saag (greens), which is the main ingredient! Even the color was off, which should have been my first clue. Definitely disappointed.

Google
Mid level experience. The Tandoori chicken was so small, it could have easily been a pigeon’s legs and thighs. The basmati rice was inedible. The garlic naan was too soft, floppy. Best to have spent the $25 someplace better in Fishtown.

1/10/2025 Updates: the first time we ordered Samosas must have been a fluke. Every other time we've ordered from Ekta, we've gotten the Samosas and have been delicious ever since. This is our go to take out spot for Indian cuisine. The good: The Chicken Korma, Chicken Saag and Baingan Bharta we're delicious and appropriately spiced (both flavor and spicy) The bad: Samosas were the worst part of the meal, would not order those again. They have easy online ordering for both pick up and delivery, great for a take out night!

Google
Great variety of vegetarian options for a good price if you know what to order! We've ordered delivery and also dined in. The restaurant is comfortable, and the owner is very kind and attentive. This is another one of our favorite Indian restaurants! If you're vegetarian, you might want to consider ordering their dal makhani, malai kofta, and/or mango lassi.

Google
Best Indian food in town. Highly recommend butter chicken.

Google
I’ve been ordering from Ekta for over three years, and their consistency still impresses me. The food is always excellent—fresh, vibrant, and perfectly spiced, arriving piping hot whether it’s takeout or delivery. Their standards are remarkably high, and the care shows in every dish. Friends who’ve moved away or live farther out still talk about how much they miss having Ekta nearby. It’s a local gem that never slips, and I’m genuinely grateful to have it in the neighborhood.

Google
I'm not sure why google is showing this empty dining room. It feels a little unfair. Ok, the ambiance isn't anything, but the food here is soooooo good. I used to have a different go-to indian food in the city, but then tried Ekta on a whim. The flavors here are so complex and more intense. It is now the only spot we order from. Ekta for the win. We may be a tad basic on this one, but we absolutely love the Korma and the Saag Paneer. I'll take that back and say we like the classics. What is wrong with that? They do the classics justice and more.

Yelp
My go-to takeout. The paneer tikka masala is my top craving weekly with the garlic naan

Yelp
Went here for the Kachha Aam Ki Sabzi. This is hands down my favorite dish at the restaurant. It is made of raw mango and has some mixed vegetables. We had a bit of garlic naan with this dish which was also pretty good. The service here was quick and the server was pretty friendly.

Yelp
This is my second time having Ekta & I must say it's worth it!! I ordered on Uber eats because I did not feel like driving into the city on a Saturday night. They had a buy one get one deal going on which I've never seen before so I took advantage because it was exactly what I was going to order anyway (the chicken tikka masala & garlic naan) The food arrived still hot and full of flavor! The chicken was tender yet firm, the sauce was outstanding. I asked for it to be more spicy than usual & they did a wonderful job at adding the perfect amount of heat. The garlic naan...yum! I also enjoyed the onion bhaji, this was my first time ever trying it and I would definitely order it again. However, I do think it was a little heavy. I'm sure it would've been more crispy eating it at the restaurant, I didn't even use the dipping sauces it was served with (tamarind chutney & green chutney I believe) because the bhaji by itself had excellent flavor! I did try both chutneys but I wasn't a huge fan of the flavors they were giving but that's ok! I will definitely be ordering from here again. Great good, fast service & big portions.

Yelp
I doordashed while staying in Fishtown. I got the butter chicken and lamb vindaloo, both exactly what I needed.

Yelp
Decent, reliable value for the money. I've ordered from here a few times and gotten prompt delivery of very decent food every time. And I definitely have to shout them out for the best labeling and packaging in local non-corporate food delivery (as you can see from my photo). I recently ordered Mango Chicken, and it was pretty good. I would order it again. However, I did order it "medium spicy," and it came more like "mild." I also ordered Baingan Bharta (eggplant curry), one of my favorites, but not only was it not spicy at all (despite ordering "medium spicy), it was actually a bit bland in flavor. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. I guess I will have to try ordering everything "spicy" to get "medium" next time (something not uncommon when ordering Indian in America). Also, the paratha I ordered had the flavor and texture of a whole wheat naan. It wasn't bad, but is this what a paratha is supposed to taste like? I don't know. And the samosas weren't bad either. Mango Chicken: 4/5 Baingan Bharta: 3/5 Paratha: 3/5 Vegetable Samosas: 3/5

Yelp
I've been ordering pick up and delivery from them and the chicken tiki masala and garlic naan are always really delicious.

Yelp
(Butter)CHICKEN JOCKEYYYYYYYYYYY. So good. So pure. Going once a week. Ekta is like the son I never had.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from here and loved it! I loved how many different items are on the menu. Our service was quick and accurate. We love our go-to order of chicken tikka masala though I will admit the serving size is smaller than other places. I loved the Baigan Bharta which is a roasted eggplant dish. We will definitely be ordering again from here and can't wait to try more dishes off their menu.

Yelp
Solid Indian Cuisine in the heart of Fishtown that will leave you coming back for more! I've only gotten takeout here but I can only imagine sitting inside would be the same experience. I ordered the Garlic Naan (8/10), Paneer Tikka Masala (8/10), and the Aaloo Tikki (6/10). Nothing wrong with the Aaloo Tikki it just was ok to me. Totally fine with that thought because I wanted to try a new appetizer. I've had the Samosas in the past and they are really good. Overall I'm a huge fan of this place and will be back for more! Just a head up, parking can be tricky around there, prepare accordingly!

Yelp
This review is for the Manayunk/Roxborough location! I have been looking for a good Indian takeout spot for a while and I think I have found it! Tonight I was in the mood for chicken biryani and I did not want to go back to the previous takeout location I've tried in the past so I googled Indian takeout near me. Ekta in Fishtown came up and I immediately texted my foodie friend who happens to live in Fishtown and she said it is so good so I had to try it. I got the onion bhaji and veg samosa to start with the chutney dipping sauces. They were very flavorful and delicious. The green cilantro chutney just adds to a perfect bite. I had the chicken biryani and my husband had the chicken tikka masala, both spicy. My food was really good and had fried onion on top just like how my mom serves her biryani. The chicken tikka masala was good too but a little too spicy for both my husband and I taste so medium will be the go to next time. Ekta has multiple locations including Fishtown and University City but I think the manyunk/Roxborough location is fairly new. They offer deliver as well!

Yelp
I've ordered a few times from Ekta. Honestly, it's not the BEST Indian food I've eaten, but it's very good and it's the best option I've found for Indian delivery in the Fishtown area. I love that they have their own delivery guy and the food usually arrives quickly, still hot, and perfectly labeled. I usually get some combination of Butter Chicken, Malai Kofta, Samosas, Gobi Manchurian, Onion Bhaji and Naan. All are quite tasty. The Onion Bhaji were amazing! I don't think they ask about heat levels when you order, but they all have a kick without blowing you away. A good, solid choice for delivery on a night that you're craving comfort food.

Yelp
I'm really sad to say I spent $32 on a meal and wasn't satisfied. I will say I came about an hour before closing-but honestly if you can't provide the quality-just say the kitchen is closed. I ordered basic chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. I asked for 7/10 spiciness which I understand is a subjective scale-but I'm also very familiar with Indian food and spice level. The chicken tikka was about a 1/10 spiciness and was so sweet that it tasted oddly tomato-y dessert-like. And the chicken breast used was very dry despite being in a TON of sauce with very little chicken. Garlic naan was obviously not fresh-once again if you know the quality isn't at least decent then just say you are out for the night! I'm very disappointed because many reviews are stellar and I had high expectations. I don't know if I will try again.

Yelp
Easy ordering online. It was made in 20 minutes on a afternoon weekday. The takeout items had labels so it was easy to see which dish is which. Everything had a good amount of spice in them.
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
We dinned in and had a wonderful time. We were the only ones in the dining room which made me sad because this place deserves more customers! The food was delicious and authentic, the restaurant was clean and the staff was so friendly. Plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options. They were playing fun Indian pop music as well. The decor could use a revamp but other than that this place is amazing! I would recommend for anyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Why is this place not swamped? The food is delicious the best Indian food I've had in Philadelphia. We got the gobi manchurian, samosa, tiki masala, and kadai lamb. Everything was delicious. We asked to make it extra spicy and it was perfect. Very flavorful. Service is great. And it's byob. I wish I had photos but I was to excited to try it.
google avatar

Noelle B.

Yelp
The food is delicious, but I don't know if I can order from a restaurant with such a concerning health score. 85 out of 100? That's pretty terrible.

Maggie S.

Yelp
Favorite take out night food! They are quick and consistent. Food is always amazing. Every time we want take out we end up with Ekta.
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
They are currently take out only. You can order for pickup online or by phone. Food was finished fairly quickly and was piping hot at pickup. Great flavoring and seasoning on everything although slightly salty. I got regular spiciness and it was not hot at all! The tandoori chicken came with 4 pieces of chicken on bone which was kinda small for the price. Overall a great meal and I would order from here again.
google avatar

Benny B.

Yelp
Very yummy food. Not too spicy. I had the lamb sagwalla and it was perfect. Not too oily either. The lasi was... Well, confusing. I ordered the guava lasi but couldn't taste the fruit. Next time I will go for the mango. I also had some kebab and samosa... I love it all.

Yelp
Despite living in Point Breeze, I've managed the trek over to Ekta in Fishtown a few times now. I've dined in a couple of times and ordered takeout a few times, all have been enjoyable experiences. The menu at Ekta doesn't vary much from most of the Indian spots in Philly, the difference is in the taste of the food. The ingredients seem fresher and the chefs just seem better. The food is well balanced, perfectly seasoned, and just damn good. Personally, I love that they never asked us how spicy we wanted our dishes, I'm sure you can request whatever you want, but I prefer when a chef cooks a dish with the ingredients they feel are appropriate. While it's tough to get over there from Point Breeze, Ekta is well worth the trip. You should absolutely give them a shot.
google avatar

Retna S.

Yelp
I love ordering the food directly from the restaurant because there's no delivery fee and other service fees that can add up your food bill. Very friendly service and willing to adjust the level of spiciness. Mango chicken: I asked for very mild but still tasted the depth of spice of the dish. It's not a heavy meal, I dipped my paratha into this creamy and flavorful gravy. The chicken cubes is a little bit overcooked. It takes about an hour for delivery.

Yelp
Def the best take out indian food in philly!!! We love love their paneer tikka masala or their chicken tikka masala. Our other favorite dish is their gobi manchurian and samosa chaat. We have tried many other indian restuarants in Philly and this one is always consistent and hits the spot. We have high standards for Indian food since we are Indian as well, and this meets our expectation every time!! This will continue to be our go-to Indian food spot.
google avatar

Ellen B.

Yelp
My go to Indian restaurant. Love picking up food here or dining in. The service is very friendly. The Gobi Manchurian is always part of our order -- so good!
google avatar

J G.

Yelp
Average tasting Indian food, ok tasting. Very friendly staff and good prices. Tried the palak Chana and dal tadka. The menu could be made better as it didn't include the names of the dishes I ordered although they are common and not complex dishes.
google avatar

Ian C.

Yelp
Indian food done well! Ordered takeout and the portion size lasted me 2 more meals! Great value - 5/5. The onion pakoras, butter chicken, and saag paneer were outstanding and would highly recommend. The dal was solid as well and each main came with a side of white rice. I took off a star because the samosas come 2 in an order and when I asked for 2 they didn't warn me. The Naan are a bit small and the samosas also lacked the punch of spice that they are known for. Overall 4/5, food 4.5/5, service/communication 4/5.
google avatar

Helene M.

Yelp
Great food!! Preparation is excellent and the staff that work there are very nice. My favorites are Gobi, Manchurian, and Ekta vegetables.
google avatar

Krina S.

Yelp
Just walking on the same block as Ekta evokes cartoon scenes of Donald Duck getting grabbed by the nostrils by some magnificent aroma that carries him down the street. My husband and I got Ekta the evening of our at-home Zoom wedding reception (bc covid, lol) if that tells you anything about how good this place is. It was also our Thanksgiving meal- we got it the day before (they were closed for the holiday) and warmed it back up so it could be our holiday feast. Can you tell I really like it? Honestly, everything from this place is delicious. Navratna korma, butter chicken, onion pakora, chicken biryani... all mouth-watering and savory. I'm an Indian and this is my go-to Indian spot in the area. Prices are decent for the portions. Service and pickup are easy breezy.
google avatar

Vik S.

Yelp
Being an Indian and have eaten in most of the Philly Indian restaurants in Philly area, compared to others, Ekta's flavors and spice proportions are on the superior side of authentic Indian .I highly recommend them, Especially at Fishtown .
google avatar

Tiara B.

Yelp
Good food and basic customer service. This restaurant is takeout/delivery only at the moment. Beware, parking isn't the most convenient so definitely come with a plan if you're driving.
google avatar

Bernie K.

Yelp
We always bring friends from out of town to this restaurant and they're never disappointed! The food is fresh and delicious! The service is always genuine, friendly and attentive! I learn something new every time I am there - so happy they opened the dining room again so that we can share this small yet cozy place that serves delicious Indian cuisine! It's a must if you're in the area - I highly recommend!
google avatar

Ritesh S.

Yelp
So glad this place exists! I had ordered from here long ago and remember enjoying the food but sadly never reviewed them. COVID got me to remember about this place and so glad they're still around! Solid spot for Indian food - and I've tried some not so great spots in the past. If you go for pick up, the place is completely unassuming but don't judge it by the facade - there are surprises in store with the food quality! We had ordered pick up (they partner with the different delivery services and also do their own delivering for free!) We ordered the shaag paneer, garlic naan, and veggie biriyani. The order delivery was right within the time window they quoted and the delivery guy was super friendly. Everything came well packaged and nothing was out of place when we unpacked it at home. The food quality is where it's at though. Great flavor, solid portions, not heavy on the oil - just hits all the right cravings. Will definitely be hitting this place up again as quarantine looms on. Check it out - so much to offer!

Yelp
Oh wow this place is amazing. The service was awesome. Very helpful in making recommendations for my dietary restrictions. I loved the samosas. If you are looking for yummy Indian food in the area, go here!!!
google avatar

Maryam A.

Yelp
I only did deliver, but the food is good, the only con I have is the butter chicken taste like it was cooked with tomato soup, it's all delicious
google avatar

Sophia B.

Yelp
When we went to ekta, we ordered papadam and butter chicken and chicken tikka. Everything was amazing. Rich, creamy, super flavorful. The kind of food that feeds your soul. We also were lucky enough to talk to the owner for a bit and he was very friendly. The mango lassi was one of the better ones I've ever had.

Mina B.

Yelp
Too expensive for takeout, they barely give you anything. The food was okay though. Service via phone was good as well.

Linda S.

Yelp
Soooooo good--specifically love the chicken tikka masala, but most dishes from here delicious

John D.

Yelp
this is genuinely the best restaurant I've been to anywhere in the world. great food and great service!
google avatar

Vineela G.

Yelp
We got take out from here. We had gobi manchurian, malai kofta curry, chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. Mali kofta and chicken tikka masala were really good. Gobi manchurian was below average. The gobi pieces were too big and under cooked in the center.
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
This is $14 worth of Tandoori Chicken. It arrived an hour later, cold, and SKIMP as fk. It usually comes with larger pieces of chicken, mixed peppers and onions. Y'all see what we got. UPDATE: We got dry leftovers. The basmati rice was awful. The naan was tough and cold. It's upsetting bc we order from there every week and this was the worst service we've ever had.
google avatar

Irma I.

Yelp
Mostly a take out place but does have a small dining area. Table cloths & Table service. No alcohol. Food was good. Definitely would get the chicken masala.

Chloe K.

Yelp
SO good. one of the best restaurants in the northern liberties fish town area I WILL be going back
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
I find it hard to believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I'm not privy to all the ins and outs of Indian food. I love this place. The bathroom signs have Braille on them but it's just a printed piece of paper that has been laminated. I know a guy that stayed there for five weeks. He said it was great and tasted just like real Indian food.
google avatar

Isaac A.

Yelp
I've been looking for a good Indian spot in philly and up until now I've been disappointed. Lots of so-so places but none really worth noting or returning too.. again until now. Rita has all the classic dishes but calls out vegan options very clearly which seems rare. Ordered the eggplant and chickpea dish. Both had strong flavors and were good portions.

Juliette C.

Yelp
i'm a big fan of ekta fishtown. the paneer makhani is so flavorful and yummy! samosas and garlic naan were great. the tandoori chicken was possibly the best i've ever had. the chicken in my friend's chicken tikka masala was also cooked so well. very fair prices for the amount of food you get. service was attentive. the ambiance is nothing special but it's clean and presentable.

Andrew V.

Yelp
I'm shocked this place doesn't have 6 stars. They are fast, consistent, and delicious. The chicken tikka masala, butter chicken and naan are amazing along with everything on their menu. Plus their prices are very reasonable for the portions; you'll be full. 10/10 5/5 whatever you want to say I love this place. There is no dine-in option this place is take out only
google avatar

Sonu K.

Yelp
Best Indian food I had in us Person taking the order was very helpful too Their medium spice is pretty hot so watch the spice level you order
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
I ordered pick up and they forgot the sauce for the samosas...the naan was incredibly dry, chicken tikka masala was also dry...would not recommend
google avatar

Deirdre C.

Yelp
Stopped in tonight for dinner to celebrate a friends birthday. I had never been here before. Dinner was so so good!! We ordered onion nan, three vegetarian dishes that came with rice. I'm happy there were leftovers! Very good!!
google avatar

Diamondz W.

Yelp
They only serve to-go food. The flavors are excellent and very authentic. I wish they had a sit down area.
