"If an expansive Tex-Mex menu is what you seek, this is the place. Everything under the sun seems to be available in a real “I want it, I got it” moment. From a ritzy (and pricey) dish of scallops with lobster rice and morita salsa to an array of Mexican pizzas, this place leans heavily on Acapulco-style dishes with a heavy seafood bent and strong Americanized options." - Courtney E. "El Bolero is known for the Oilman margarita, its signature black marg with activated charcoal and a gold salt rim. If that’s a little too far out there, the prickly pear and spicy mandarin margaritas are also solid choices." - Eater Staff

Food was excellent. We had empanadas, gazpacho, chicken enchiladas and shrimp tacos. Our server was new but evidently well trained. Our glasses and our chips were never empty. The chef absolutely takes the time to marry wonderful flavors and it shows in the quality of the food. And that cilantro rice rocks!

The food was amazing. We came here with our picky toddler and the manager was so accommodating. He put together a special meal for our toddler that only loves meat, beans and rice. That was not the best part. We started with empanadas— amazing. I ordered the Cochinita Pibil and about died when I took the first bite. The pork was so tender and the habanero sauce was on point. My husband ordered the Barbacoa tacos — so flavorful. Even our most picky teens enjoyed the crispy tacos and the burrito grande. Not only did the food taste delicious but it looked amazing. We finished our meal with the churros and the tres leches cake. All so good! We will definitely be coming back again!

Google
Nice cozy place. Upscale Mexican food. Pricey but for us worth the extra money on special occasions. We had the scallops with lobster rice. Employees were busy, but kept on top with service. Parking fills up quickly. Several businesses on site. Must also try the deserts.

Google
Cool atmosphere, but the food, although good presentstion lacked flavor/taste. And the service was not good. I'm not sure if I would make a return visit. The alcoholic beverages tasted a little off. Wasn't worth the price, in my opinion.

Google
We went for cinco de mayo and this place was excellent! The food has all of the color but without the spice. The salsa has flavor but zero spice. I ordered the tacos con nopales and they were very good! The drinks are really good. The oil man was one that stood out- its very pretty and unique but it had to water down a little for me to enjoy the flavor. The guava margarita was very good and I personally loved the cotton candy drink which seemed like it had a lower alcohol content. The prices are on the higher side but the service was good considering how busy it was. We had one drink that got forgotten but the waiter admitted his mistake and comped the drink. We sat out on the patio which was really nice, the decor inside is really nice so don't miss that either!

Google
The margaritas were not to my taste if I’m being frank. The food was good but they were so short staffed that I felt bad even ordering. My enchiladas could have used significantly more salsa verde (they seemed nearly dry), but again, I couldn’t bring myself to ask the limited staff that appeared run off their feet. They were all very nice though. Chips and salsa were mediocre at best. The restaurant was quite loud overall.

Google
Have the corporate card or an out of town guest to wow? Take them here! Higher than average prices for food you can get nearby at half the cost. That said the atmosphere is pretty organized and great. The drinks are too sweet for my liking. Was disappointed on the “best margarita in dallas” (oil man), tasted like terry blacks frozen black margarita, both not my favorite due to sweetness. The best thing to get here was the squash soup. The empanadas are also a decent appetizer tonight accompany the meal. I would suggest skipping on the green michelada unless you really love green dipping salsa on everything.

Google
Great salsa and everything was well-priced for the area. Our waiter, Kevin, was amiable and accommodating, as we were first-timers! Will be back! - recommend the steak and eggs and omelets!

Yelp
El Bolero Mexican food was a great stop for us my husband had the Posole and I had the pollo asado I would have taken a picture but our food didn't stand a chance. We devoured it. The service was outstanding Jaime was our server very knowledgeable and made excellent suggestions for us. The Ambiance was great we came in around 5pm on a Thursday afternoon. PS. Our appetizer was awesome the queso fundido with carne asada.

Angie K.

Yelp
This was not far from our hotel, so a good walking distance stop for us when we were out visiting. We sat on the patio which was quite nice despite being so close to what seemed to be a major road. We were there around dinner time and the place was decently busy but there definitely wasn't much traffic on the road so outdoor dining was perfect. It was also thankfully not crazily hot. The appetizer and drinks were tasty and the menu has a lot of different options on it. My chile relleno was nicely prepared though I was a bit disappointed at how many bits of crab shell were in the crab meat. I realize it's a bit of a challenge, but for the price I do feel like the restaurant could have done a bit better on that front. If I'm back I will perhaps try something else, since I do think they likely do a good job given the state of the relleno itself.

Yelp
We walked down from our hotel and were greeted at the doo by a very friendly staff member and the hostess, Angela. We were seated immediately and our waitress Stephanie was quick to bring us water. She said she saw us walking and we needed our hydration. I ordered the chile rellano de queso and it was very good. My coworker had the vegetarian enchiladas and he said they very good. The atmosphere is electric and the decorations make the place exciting. I will definitely be back here when I'm in town.

Dan G.

Yelp
I've seen this place in passing a few times and I'm glad I finally came to try this place out! The food there was absolutely delicious! We came in and were immediately greeted by a host and led to our seats. My side had a little pillow for extra cushion which was a nice touch for me. The waiter was nice and immediately took our drink order. I got the Oilman Margarita which was decent and had some strength to it. Interesting because of black color and the candy stick. Definitely more for show. For anyone who likes their drinks on the sweeter side I recommend stirring it in for a good bit before really going for it. Now for the appetizer we got the elote which was great. For my meal I got the Tamale with mole and I absolutely loved it! It was huge and so didn't think I'd finish but I got every last bite. The mole was sweet with a good bit of spice to it. Definitely be prepared for that kick. I ordered the okra for a side and that too was surprisingly extra delicious for a side. A good strong drink and a tasty meal. I enjoyed thoroughly it and will definitely come back again. The place itself looks nice. Not overly fancy but definitely more upscale than your typical Mexican restaurant. Good for a nice date or just a night out on the town. They have a small lot in front but on a busy night it could be a challenge to find parking but si usually find something in the area. There a few bars down the road so that is always an option for afterwards.

Yelp
Guacamole, Queso Fundido, Steak Fajitas, Vegetarian Enchiladas . Okay the guac and queso fundido were fantastic and such a great start to the meal. But man those steak Fajitas were the most underwhelming overcooked things. Super sad. My friends seemed to enjoy their dishes though! They have a great outdoor space that we were seated at. But their huge umbrellas kept blowing over, and one of them can't even be opened properly without tipping over, which is like...why even have that umbrella then? Nice servers with their attempts to open the umbrellas and keep the sun off of us!

Kate B.

Yelp
I recently visited El Bolero in the Dallas Design District and had a mixed experience. I ordered the elotes, which are usually my favorite at every restaurant, and i order them all over , but these were definitely not up to par. They had barely any crema, not much cheese, and were basically an over-seasoned tiny bowl of corn for $10. I was really disappointed because I love elotes . On the bright side, the pineapple water was delicious, and our waiter Oscar was very nice. The boss was also very attentive!i also tried the verde chicken enchiladas, which were good. The food here is definitely decent, but if I'm looking for fancy Mexican, I'd probably go somewhere else. This place feels more casual/nice, but I didn't expect so many twists on each menu item. It almost felt like they were trying too hard. My enchiladas were sweet and sour, which was interesting! For dessert, I had the tres leches cake, and it was cool because it had a Neapolitan-style layering. Overall, I feel like there were too many changes to classic dishes, which didn't always work for me. However, the service, drinks, atmosphere, and price for the amount of food were great. I'd rate it 3.5 stars. There were definitely things I didn't prefer in some dishes, but the overall experience was still enjoyable.

Yelp
This restaurant is situated in the heart of Design district which is very up and coming! There is ample free parking, so no worries about finding parking. They actually location is pretty, upscale and very clean, it actually looks new! The staff was great- the hostess opened the door for us and sat us immediately. Our server was sweet and helpful. I got the vegan nopales tacos which had Corn smut- something i have never had so i decided to try it. They are an acquired taste, maybe not my favorite, but worth trying something different and new. I also tried my boyfriends elote and okra, both of which were amazing! This place was delicious! We will definitely come back in the future!

Tawni R.

Yelp
Jamie is the best!! The homemade habanero salsa is amazeeee! Great service and the scratch kitchen never disappoints.

Courtney M.

Yelp
Service was good. Drinks were amazing! Food was par. Would go back for drinks again, but not to eat!

M. Brad S.

Yelp
My roommates and I decided to dine here because we have had great experience here and it is convenient with our plans tonight. We were sat right away although the hostess was very hard to understand (quiet). We ordered the trio salsa and after approximately 50 minutes it was served. In the interim, we had ordered the guacamole with bacon and it was served. We also ordered the mojit to drink and they were out of mint, which was okay. They complimented us with a free margarita.

Mitzy G.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! Our server Javier was great super attentive to our needs, gave good recommendations and made us feel right at home.

Deedee S.

Yelp
A hip and fun TexMex at Design District! We came during lunch and were immediately seated. They were properly staffed and service was attentive. The complimentary chips had a bit of a bite to it, and the salsa packed some heat. I ordered the seafood crispy tacos and it was delicious! Might be back for Taco Tuesday.

Yelp
Gathered with friends for brunch. Food was fabulous and PLENTIFUL! You MUST order their signature cotton candy margarita! A nice relaxed atmosphere and you can actually hear the people at your table without yelling. Such a delightful experience. Our server Jamie was fantastic! Will definitely come back!

Corie B.

Yelp
Beautiful place to visit for a nice meal and drinks. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Overall everything tasted great! Be prepared to spend a pretty penny though! The Texas Peach Margarita was my favorite! Highly recommend you try it.

Lorenzo H.

Yelp
It's great when venues know how to wear many hats; El Bolero, a noticeable touch of Mexico in Dallas's Design District does just that. It's not only a wonderful place for a delicious meal, and cocktails, but also an amazing option for afternoon or early evening meetings. Staff members, such as Luis, are so attentive to your every need that you and your guest are assured a fabulous experience. Maybe we'll enjoy El Bolero together; wouldn't that be nice? Xoxo Lorenzo!

Tony L.

Yelp
Love this place, when in the area, a must go place. Enjoy the food menu and diverse options as well as the service.

Regina H.

Yelp
Food is excellent, they were very busy so the service was pretty good. One of the items I ordered was the pescado tacos, mahi mahi was good-grilled. Disappointed because it was supposed to have jicama slaw as well. It was served with red cabbage. When I told the manager he said he could see it the jicama..... I asked where? He then offers me a side of jicama & that next time I should request additional jicama. My only words were it should just be made as stated on the menu. He did not offer a dessert, actually an apology would have just been nice. In any case very nice restaurant. Additionally the nopales queso was excellent along with tortillas chips and a uniquely flavored salsa.

Chuck O.

Yelp
Food and drinks were delicious but be prepared to wait for them on a weekend. Still worth a visit but bring your patience!

Sandra H.

Yelp
My new go to for great guacamole. And who told them to put bacon in it? You will be back just for this delicious dish! So good you will be shouting out for more. I wanted to tell all the customers to order this (but I did not. lol) Great ambiance and I have never had a problem finding a place to park. Customer service is spot on.

Mohsin S.

Yelp
Decided to try something outside the norm and ordered a Mexican Pizza with carne asada. It was done on what seemed like a thick flour tortilla which was baked. The carne asada and strips of poblano tasted good. Service was efficient and we ate out on the patio

Miriam V.

Yelp
Jaime was great and attentive!!! Great happy hour drinks!! Amazing service Jamie was amazing with our table and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Kenya R.

Yelp
Well, we came in spite of some of the Yelp and Google reviews that I didn't start reading until we were on the way. My husband had already made a reservation, so... We were seated promptly and brought chips and bland salsa. I ordered the Texas Peach margarita that tasted nothing like peach. My husband got some maple bourbon drink that he said was just ok. For an appetizer, we ordered the queso blanco that was so bland that it seemed they thinned it water. I ordered the crispy chicken tacos that came with cilantro lime rice. The chicken tasted really weird, so I only ate 1/2 of a taco. The rice was good. I don't recommend this at all. My husband got the chicken quesadilla which was ok. Tasted like something I would make at home. We sat on the patio which provided a nice breeze. They have 2 unisex bathrooms. I say plan ahead and get a better meal at the Mexican.

Sandra C.

Yelp
Have been to Bolero several times now and they always have great service, great food, and great drinks. Jamie was our waiter this time and gave us great recommendations and was always quick and available when we needed him. This will definitely not be our last time coming !

Reachel B.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere with tasty drinks and great service (thanks Jamie)! Food is a step up from traditional American-Mexican cuisine - get the fried ice cream!

Jordan H.

Yelp
Jamie, was very knowledgeable and hospitable! The food was amazing! I would highly recommend the lobster enchilada's and fresh guacamole for a starter!

Carol K.

Yelp
Jamie was amazing. The food was delicious. We had fajitas and they were so tender. We had steak. This was our first time. A lot of attention to our dietary needs.

Loreli N.

Yelp
The enchiladas verdes de pollo are a staple here and the cocktails are always so good! The mexican chocolate marg is so delish - I'd definitely order again! When visiting El Bolero, ordering the super cheesy al pastor queso fundido is a must! It's such a nice cozy place! I love the shoe-shine chair near the front door because of the play on the name "El Bolero" (shoe shiner / boot polisher)! Always attentive and super friendly staff!

MH H.

Yelp
Love love this place! Everything we ordered was super delish and great presentation. The servers were all very friendly and attentive. Camilo, our main server, was exceptional! The restaurant was full but not too crowded. I highly recommend this place!

Ebony J.

Yelp
Such a cute restaurant, walked in without a reservation on a Thursday and was able to sit down almost immediately. The staff was extremely attentive. The food was good (fajitas okay but the short rib was extremely tender) and the drinks were even better!

Arpitha B.

Yelp
I know there are lots of mexican restaurants in dallas but this one should be on your list to try! Got the chicken mole enchiladas and chicken hard tacos. They were really good and service waa fast! The chips served at the table were really oily. They have outdoor seating as well with a nice view of the skyline.

Chris W.

Yelp
Delicious food. Nice ambience too. Not your average Mexican taqueria. Had the lobster crevice and the mole chicken tacos and especially the crevice was great. Their salsa is really flavorful and the chips are good and Texas sized. Would recommend!

Lisa C.

Yelp
This place is a little gem hidden in the design district. It is clean and cute. The food was not your usual stuff either. The chicken tacos had potato in them. The rice had avocado! So good!!

Mark P.

Yelp
Was good food. A little pricey but not horrible. Very relaxed atmosphere. Service was good and management was very friendly

Katie H.

Yelp
We were able to be seated quickly on a Friday night which was really nice. However, when we ordered our food, we asked if we could substitute our charro beans out for a different type of beans and we were told "no substitutions" .... Okay? Then we were given 3 different tables food before we finally got ours. Prices were a bit high for the serving sizes. It was just an okay experience. If I wanted to spend $20 on enchiladas I would've gone somewhere better.

Stephen M.

Yelp
Had a very bad experience here for my brothers birthday dinner. Service was extremely slow and the server rarely came back to our table. We were seated and not asked for drink orders until we decided to get a server's attention. Same for appetizers and entrees. At the end, we asked to split the bill and she said the "system is down" and cannot split it. We wanted to cut a cake, so asked for additional plates. We were told it is $3 a person if we want to cut a cake that we brought ourselves.

Hector H.

Yelp
Service was on point and the food was excellent! Very relaxed environment of you want to just sit back and enjoy a drink too.

Megan L.

Yelp
The service was disastrous. We ordered waters, drinks, and basic entrees. Our server was nice enough at the beginning which made us excuse the delay it took to get our waters and our drinks but our food took over an hour and we had to find a manager. We were told that someone neglected to submit our order and they would expedite it. The food came out quickly and it tasted pretty good. We weren't able to pay out, all the servers had disappeared and we had to find the manager in his office. He wasn't super accommodating about the situation. The manager said he would comp the food then came back with the check saying he actually couldn't do that. It was extremely frustrating

Angel N.

Yelp
The food here was phenomenal. We came here for brunch for a birthday and the drinks and food were delicious! We were a party of 5 so not too big but I docked stars just because it was really difficult to get a hold of our server. The only thing thing we needed was more drinks but it took a while to flag our server down to order the drink and then he would come back asking what we ordered. We had asked for they check at 2pm and we didn't get the check till 3pm. He came by twice asking what we asked for and we told him it was the check but it still took about an hour. However, the drinks were so unique and they had so many flavors for mimosas. They also have a $3 happy hour for mimosas. The barbacoa was soft and flavorful and the hash had such a good combination of flavors with the potato, bacon, peppers, cheese, and egg. The complimentary chips and salsa were great too.

Wael D.

Yelp
Spending the weekend in Dallas and one of the hotel staff recommended this place to us. We were four people and when we first got there we were slightly worried because we were the only ones there, but thankfully we had a great experience. I split the short rib fajitas for two with my sister. My fiancé got the shrimp tacos and my other sister got the barbacoa tacos. Everything tasted really good and came out hot and fresh. The short rib is awesome and cooked exceptionally. Everybody else enjoyed their meals and they all seemed to love the music here. The street corn is also to die for and it's definitely big enough to split with someone. I'd highly recommend this place.

Yadi T.

Yelp
I ordered el cóctel de camaron and I was in Cancun last week and this one was better than the one over there. It's $21 so it's pretty pricy. The shrimp were huge and the spices added were delicious. So far, it's the best one I've had.

Christian C.

Yelp
This is a must do in Dallas! Immediately when you walk in the patio and inside of the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. When we walked in the hostess was extremely busy, but took the time to say I'll be right with you. I'm sorry for the wait. When we sat down, of course, we ordered drinks, they came out beautifully, garnished and tasted amazing. For the food items, we all ordered different things which was great, I ordered the enchiladas de mole, my boyfriend ordered the Mexican pizza and my friend ordered the tacos. Everything was incredible, the Mexican pizza was the best! So, service, 5 out of 5 and food 5 out of 5. Overall 5 out of 5!

Lucie G.

Yelp
El Bolero has a cool, artsy Mexican decor including a Frida Kahlo portrait in mosaic. The food was OK, but the service was awful. After we were seated, we were ignored for almost half an hour. Ordering was like pulling teeth. At one point, I asked for a Diet Coke. 20 minutes later, there was still no Diet Coke. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, but our server was out to lunch. The food was OK. Temperature and texture were fine, but the vegetarian enchiladas tasted too acidic--they need to be paired with some beans. The menu looked promising, and they have an extensive drink list. Overall, the experience was really a disappointment.

Stachia M.

Yelp
Customer Service was good. The complimentary chips and salsa were nice the portions of all entrees were good. I went on a work lunch so I could not get the full experience. I will have to go back and fully engage with the menu especially the cocktails.

Charis S.

Yelp
Very VERY Impressed with my first visit here! Yes, we did have to wait on our waitress for a good 25 minutes, BUT once things got rollin', we were good! The best part about all of the food - the seasonings and flavor were on point. There was no need to doctor up anything. My brussels were hot, full of flavor, there was a hint of lime that went so well with the salty flavor and the cotija cheese sprinkled on top, was so buttery and velvety. Even the mixed veggies were on point. The ambience was fun, colorful, upbeat and party-like. Once this Texas heart calms down, the patio will be perfect!

Jason A.

Yelp
Had such high hopes for this restaurant. We were greeted and seated promptly. We had a high top table near window and the bartender was also our waiter. My wife ordered a soup and a salad and I ordered the Grande burrito. Food was ok, nothing to write home about. The soup had a thicker broth. The burrito is actually a sauce less sandwich, which is not what was expected. My wife's salad never arrived. Bartender/waiter was busy whole time and we were basically done when he came around to see how we were. He did admit never sending the salad order in. He also never came around to ask if we wanted another drink - so thankful we asked for water upfront. Then the check comes. Waited, waited, watching other wait staff keep taking drink orders to bar. We were ready to go. After waiting almost 20 minutes finally took bill to manager to get cashed out. The restaurant was not full but was busy. The service was the main issue and we will not return.

Stanley F.

Yelp
Service was great, and the food was even better! Mike, AGM was very accommodating and was interested that everyone there was having an enjoyable time.

Jane Z.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times with friends to grab dinner! They have a cute patio but in the hot summer heat, we've typically chosen to sit inside. Even on a Saturday night, there is no wait. The drinks are watered down and overpriced. I got the barbacoa tacos this time and they were pretty good. The entire taco was all meat and hardly any toppings. The cilantro rice was undercooked and hard and I wish the entree came with a side of beans. All in all, I would say this restaurant is just okay but great if you're looking to quickly satisfy a Mexican craving at a place with no wait.

Olgert B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere inside. They have a full service bar and great service with pretty good happy hour deals. Their quest fundido was really tasty and would recommend to accompany a margarita. Tacos are also pretty . Overall worth checking out if you're looking for tasty food in the Design District.
