I recently visited El Bolero in the Dallas Design District and had a mixed experience. I ordered the elotes, which are usually my favorite at every restaurant, and i order them all over , but these were definitely not up to par. They had barely any crema, not much cheese, and were basically an over-seasoned tiny bowl of corn for $10. I was really disappointed because I love elotes . On the bright side, the pineapple water was delicious, and our waiter Oscar was very nice. The boss was also very attentive!i also tried the verde chicken enchiladas, which were good. The food here is definitely decent, but if I'm looking for fancy Mexican, I'd probably go somewhere else. This place feels more casual/nice, but I didn't expect so many twists on each menu item. It almost felt like they were trying too hard. My enchiladas were sweet and sour, which was interesting! For dessert, I had the tres leches cake, and it was cool because it had a Neapolitan-style layering.
Overall, I feel like there were too many changes to classic dishes, which didn't always work for me. However, the service, drinks, atmosphere, and price for the amount of food were great. I'd rate it 3.5 stars. There were definitely things I didn't prefer in some dishes, but the overall experience was still enjoyable.
