"The first thing you’ll notice about the Mexican spot El Borrego De Oro is the sign. It’s turquoise and pagoda-shaped, with a big sheep in the middle of it. It’s a remnant of the building’s former life as a Chinese restaurant, but you’d never know the space was anything else. The space feels lived in and cozy—the type of place that has its regulars who’ve been coming in every weekend for menudo for decades. Grab an order of the excellent birria tacos—made with slow-stewed lamb, and just the right around of gamey flavor—or lean fully into their Tex-Mex side with enchiladas, fajitas, and margaritas. photo credit: Taylor Hannan" - Nicolai McCrary

Google
Food quality is gone, the owner or manager no clue what costumer service means. Over charged 12 dollars in taxes in 1 pound of barbacoa 2 consomes 2 cans sodas. What happens in this place?

I mean what can I say, the food was meh. The worst part was that the lady was hyping it up and it was a disappointment. They had some white broth with the barbacoa instead of the red one that's the usual. It tasted good but not the taste I expected. The service was good and the lady was kind, just wish the food was at the same level.

The service was very bad, the waiter was rude and inattentive. As we were eating our meal I was eating a quesadilla and I bit into it and it had a metal wire inside of it. As I was chewing I thought it was bone in it but it was super hard and I spit it out and it was METAL WIRE. I would avoid this place until Cicero health department checks out their food safety protocols.

This restaurant is one of the best barbacuá places in Chicago, The atmosphere is cozy with a hint of that “At Home” vibe.

I have bin cooming to this place since I was a kid I came back from Detroit to visit and this place is still as good ! LA barbacoa sigue igual de riquisima!

I got the steak tacos and horchata. The horchata was great and so was the tacos, but the tacos had a little bit of fat. Their salsa is on point. Overall, great place and awesome service.

Google
Beware: the prices on the menu are NOT accurate. We were overcharged, 5 lbs of birria were ordered and they charged us by the 1/2 of pound rather than by the pound, who knows why they did this, but when we complained they said that’s how they charge by EVEN though they list a price for the 1lb. Will not be back!

The Barbacoa de Borrego has consistently been excellent. Some work has to be done here. Unfortunately, the quality of the service is subpar. If you ever need something, you must call the waitress. Because my husband doesn't like to complain, even when he receives subpar treatment, I was shocked to find that the owner was present but had apparently missed our poor service. We always order for delivery for this reason. We dine there since we just so happened to be in the area. I wouldn't do it once more. A sign that read Waitress Needed! caught my attention as well.

Yelp
Pésima atencion por parte de la mesera, además me salió un alambre que parecía de una fibra o estropajo en la comida.

Yelp
Well covid restriction are over but this place still using disposable plates, forks, knifes and spoons they also keep using the microwave to heat up the food you order the place is so dirty. You think with covid they would have clean the place from top to bottom. Cicero inspector should pay a visit to this place prices are so high and the presentation is horrible.

Yelp
If you want the real deal this is the spot, it's a family owned spot & having visited my parents home state of Hidalgo & eating this stuff religiously, no other spot than this one has even close to authentic barbacoa from back in Mexico , 5 stars every time, been coming here since I can remember as a kid over 20 years & yea they have no air conditioning which just bring me back to the fact that it's a experience, not going there for amazing service but if you talk & get to know these people, they're the kindest.

Diana R.

Yelp
Most definitely do not recommend. First of all I don't even know how many stars to give! But the broth had no flavor! They had no control they had 1 waitress that was doing everything. We asked for dip and chips and never got it. I know the waitress is not at fault for having shitty co workers that either called off or maybe didn't have enough staff. I just don't know why they open if there is not enough staff. The food was just bland. The place does not even look like the pictures. It is not clean.!!!

Yelp
Horrible service!!!! The place it falling a part, dirty as can be. The bathroom doesn't work, they don't have half the items on the menu! And the cook is talking shit with the waitress's about the clients. Would never come back! THEY GIVE PREFERENCE TO THEIR REGULARS FOR SERVICE AND MAKE THE REST WAIT!

Yelp
My friends and I were craving barbacoa and we hit the jackpot with this place! The barbacoa, consume and fresh tortillas were amazing. Delivery was fresh and they provided a ton of fresh salsa and chips. Can't wait to order again!

Yelp
Amazing food! But beware, place is SUPER understaffed and no air conditioning. They only had one server for the entire place. We asked for more cilantro never received it, the poor waitress was being overworked, they need to consider hiring more people.

Yelp
Great food, I love the Baracoa de Borrego. Been coming here for years. Their coffee is amazing too. Try the barbacoa tacos with consome.

Yelp
Where to start? First of all, my boyfriend and I had already been there twice and the food was very authentic hidalguense and good, although a bit overpriced for the service. I went there with one of my girlfriends about a month ago. Our server had such an insipid attitude. She started speaking English as she assumed I didn't speak Spanish, which is fine. I was speaking spanish, which I'm an Italian American, so spanish is my third language. Its not perfect but I can get by pretty well. My Spanish is at least as good her English was. I ordered in Spanish and the waitress looked at me as if I were from Mars. My girlfriend is mexican and speaks perfect Spanish so she stepped in. The waitress from that point forward never spoke to me in English or Spanish, only to my friend. She treated me as if I weren't even there. For a server this is unacceptable as customer service is her job. It was so obviously rude, my friend was uncomfortable as well. We were there an hour and a half before the restaurant was to close. There was a couple dining as well when we entered and then left. All the other chairs were put up on the tables around us and they had begun cleaning. They were using some strong chemicals which made me nauseous and made my friend upset as we had her 8 month old baby with us. It was literally so strong it gave us both a headache. At that point, we were worried about the baby breathing the chemicals so we left without eating our entrees and paid for our appetizer and drinks. The waitress did not care that we were totally uncomfortable, and we made sure the closing time was right as maybe it had changed since it was posted on the door. The waitress confirmed closing time as almost an hour and a half from that moment so we were flabbergasted that we were surrounded by all the chairs on tables and assaulted with the smell of cleaning supplies. If they weren't closing, why did they have to ruin our experience? Part of eating is also smelling your food and not feeling rushed to eat, like you're being kicked out. It would have made sense if one half of the restaurant was closed for cleaning even though its small, but all the tables right next to us they also put up the chairs. Another family came in to eat and they took the chairs down. I was very disappointed as I had eaten here before and the food was pretty good. I had made a special point to bring my friend there since she is Mexican, I thought she would really enjoy it and we had driven 25 miles to get there. Oh well, needless to say, I will never go back as I was very offended by this experience and they made me feel as though we not important at al to them as customers. The other times I had gone with my boyfriend, it was packed and this time it wasn't so possibly I'm not the only one to feel this way.

Yelp
What makes El Borrego De Oro special is their three types of salsa that they bring to your table. The food is your standard Taqueria fare. I like the simple steak tacos, tortas, burritos. One of the salsas tastes like it's chipotle-based and is awesome. The red and green sauces are also good, pretty typical, but the smoky chipotle is the reason I keep coming back here when I'm in Cicero. El Borrego De Oro - good chipotle. Chipotle the chain - bad chipotle.

Yelp
The best place for barbacoa de Borrego in Chicago, the morita pepper hot sauce it's unique. Recommended from 1 to 10 I give a 10

Michelle W.

Yelp
We are semi-regulars here for the plain barbacoa and the bar barbacoa in salsa verde. It's just awesome stuff. Hard to stray to other menu items.

Gabriela T.

Yelp
I haven't had tacos de borrego as good as the ones they have at El Borrego anywhere else in Chicagoland. The place is humble, and I don't know how the rest of their food is, but I highly recommend the borrego tacos and consumé!

Steven E.

Yelp
The food here is quite good and very reasonably priced. We especially like the chicken enchiladas verde. Our kids are fussy eaters, but they devoured every bite. What this place lacks in décor, it makes up in taste and freshness.
