The Best Tacos in San Diego, According to a Local Food Expert | Eater San Diego

"Now at Chula Vista’s Tiajuana Food Court, the main attraction at this laid-back taqueria are the Ensenada-style fish tacos dressed with pico de gallo and cabbage. Standouts still include the Taco Culichi, with grilled shrimp and poblano sauce, and the cheesy Gobernador taco. The original Main Street location still stands: a food truck is planted atop a faux grass turf lawn in a parking lot with outdoor seating and shaded tables suited for quick taco lunches and midday pick-me-ups. On Tuesday, the Main Street location has a $5 special with three tacos Sinaloa (deep fried shrimp in a hard corn tortilla shell with avocado, cucumber, lettuce, and queso fresco) and a side of consomé for $5." - Roxana Becerril

Where to Eat Tacos in San Diego

"While many mariscos establishments name themselves in homage to Tijuana’s famous Marisqueria La Cacho, this seafood spot might be the only one on the same level as its namesake. Now at Chula Vista’s Tia Juana Food Court, standouts still include the Taco Culichi, with grilled shrimp and poblano sauce, and the cheesy Gobernador taco. Of course, the classic Ensenada-style fish taco is available too." - Mario A. Cortez, Candice Woo

Where to Eat Mexican Food in the South Bay | Eater San Diego

"“El Cacho” is owner Carlos Robles’s nickname, and his food truck, parked in Chula Vista, is named as such. The truck serves up mouthwatering curbside-style mariscos, otherwise known as ceviche tostadas. Make sure to order the spicy Sinaloa tostada, topped with shrimp ceviche and drenched in serrano chile sauce, and the Tia Juana tostada, piled high with fresh red snapper." - Kristin Díaz de Sandi

Google
Angel makes the best Micheladas here! The food is amazing, especially Taco Tuesday's birria tacos. Sushi 🍣 is great, the music is cool, and the atmosphere is family-friendly.

Steve Nixon

Google
Great food court. They have sushi Mexican seafood and all the good authentic Mexican food including birria, mendoza and a wide assortment of speciality tacos including the Rosarito arrachea taco a must try. The Michelada was on point. A must when in chula

Google
Great place, I love it, I love the concept so much, my favorite food and drinks all together that's pretty cool, environment is great, they have music and everything, service is quick and helpful, prices are super reasonable. I enjoyed all of my food! ✨

Michelle Demarsh

Google
The food is good. The only thing that was not very pleasant that our food arrived at different times very unpleasant atmosphere was OK. Emily did explain the situation with food is delivered at separate times wouldn’t recommend other friends or family members.

Google
Best surf and turf burritos I’ve ever had. We make it a point to come here every time we are in San Diego!

Dennis Lopez

Google
I ordered lunch for the team from this location. The surf and turf fries sounded great, but they ended up being very bland and greasy. The meat and shrimp was poorly seasoned. I the lunch items ordered by others looked better, so I’ll have to try something else next time.

Chris Mingo

Google
Food was great. Customer service was great. Sad to hear all the negative reviews on racism. Hope they get that handled or they won't be open long.

Google
The owner or the management of this truck doesn't care about the neighbors. He has a gas powered generator affecting the hotdogs stand. If next week I see the samething as today, I will report them to the city of. Chula Vista. This is the second time I see this.

Yelp
So good!!! This review is for the food truck on 3rd and Main Street in the Bobar Liquor Parking lot. Covered Seating is available at 6 picnic benches which is nice for food trucks. The prices and portion sizes at this truck are great. Service and wait times are pretty quick, even at lunch rush and on a lent Friday. If you want a more restaurant vibe, el cacho has another location inside the Tijuana Food Court on Broadway between main and Anita.

Yelp
This review is for the location inside of the Tijuana Food Court in Chula Vista. My friend prefers the taco truck location as she reports the quality is better, however, on the particular Saturday we went it was closed. For all the raving she did, I was nothing short of disappointed. The fried fish taco, Ensenada Pescado, was $2.50ish and standard street taco size. The fish itself was nowhere to be found, heavily coated in batter. While the portion size of the Taco Coronado (Grilled Tilapia) was generous, it was costly at ~$6. The tilapia was also bland and fishy. My friend paid $19 for the Surf and Turf fries (Carne asada & Shrimp). $19 and the shrimp was burnt! There are SO many better, fresh, and CHEAPER fish taco spots in San Diego. I knew we should have gone to my favorite fish taco spot.

Yelp
Experience from the Tijuana Food Court location: This place was amazing when it first opened and we were so happy we had this friendly Tijuana-like place close to home, BUT, it's been so disappointing our last few visits here. The tacos got smaller and pricier. The quality completely went down. But even then, we gave at least three more tries and today will be the last one. Customer service is horrible. After waiting 30min for my one Aguachile order, I went to the counter to ask and saw them literally convert my one order agua chile from a tostada order into a bigger plate, cheating me from the order I had paid for. The food is good, but the service is horrible. Again, taste is good, but quality is very poor, and the service worse.

Yelp
Shrimp poop (digestive tract) I ordered chiltepin Tamarind Aguachile and this is what I received not well cleaned shrimp and this I was only in one order of aguachile I didn't even want to see the other aguachile habanero
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
I am all about the spicy shrimp taco here. It is so delicious! They are a bit on the pricey side but I haven't ordered anything here that I didn't enjoy. They should definitely update their location, it's now in Rivera's used car lot on Main.

Paloma R.

Yelp
I have always been a fan of El Cacho Fish Tacos! Service is always good, and it helps that it is close to home.

Yelp
Woooooow best tuna tostadas I've ever had and tacos they use great quality meat my fav Mariscos will come again
google avatar

Yelp
Unfortunately, this is my first not good review . I'm a firm believer that our society has become so touchy or picky . But in this case our taco cart adventure was cut short here. Food took very long, there was 3 customers besides us. The limes were being grabbed by others bare hands, I asked for tongs for the limes , and they were dirty inside the metal. tables were dirty. No utensils at time we got our food none outside . Went back to the line to ask for some. No sodas. Had to purchase across at a liquor store. Customer service may be limited due to it being a food truck. Hopefully they see this review and improve cleanliness. I'd give it another chance .

Yelp
Best fish tacos I've had since the ones my uncle used to make before he retired and moved to Vegas. Great seasoning and flavor. Fast service with lots of other options, my wide had the ceviche and it was amazing. Lots of parking and comfortable benches that we shared a nice family. A must stop place!!
google avatar

Jose F.

Yelp
Tacos Sonora are my go to when coming here! I just recently tried their surf and turf burrito and wow, it's extremely delicious! I think I'll be getting that from now on as well!
google avatar

Oliver B.

Yelp
If you don't see any latest reviews within three months there's a reason. Nobody raving!!! These fish taco places open up and give you the biggest fish tacos, but when established they start skimping. This place is a hot or miss!!! One day big tacos and the next the most anorexic tacos. Usually you'll see the latest pictures of people posting within the past two weeks, but this case none because of that reason. Cacho is not what they used to be.
google avatar

Kat L.

Yelp
Love this place! Fish tacos are the best and packed with lots of flavor. Surf and turf burrito was also really good and they weren't stingy with the meat and shrimp either. Tried their pineapple agua fresca. So refreshing for a hot day. Ingredients are fresh. The seating area is cute with picnic tables and an awning that provides adequate shade. Would def recommend this place.
google avatar

Yadi E.

Yelp
The fish taco truck community is viscous!! Some are misses and then there's trucks like these that make me wonder how a mobile vehicle can produce such quality tacos!!! We had the fish tacos and the surf and turf fries. Both were really good :) come check out the line of taco trucks here in the area, it's always fun to hang out and eat greasy food!
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
The best have to try it can't go wrong! Best surf and turf fries in SD. Tacos are delicious.

Yelp
Me encanto la comida! la atención, buena porción, y buenos precios! regreso pronto

Yelp
This is a great food truck. I love that they provide a covered seating area for customers, not to mention that they make some great eats as well. I enjoyed a couple of tacos from them: a fish taco a la plancha or cooked on the hot griddle and skirt steak and shrimp taco known as the "Sonora Taco." The fish was about $2 and the the Sonoran $4. I had the tacos with all the fixings and they were great. The fish taco came with well distinct fish filetes and came with a nice sear with tender succulent meat. They have the timing and temp down right. The toppings, the shredded fresh cabbage, a touch of pico and light crema fresca. The quality of the corn tortillas was on point. The Sonoran taco was bliss and came packed with tender arrachera a.k.a skirt steak and small to medium shrimp. The meat was well seasoned and quite flavorful and he shrimp cooked just right and popped with great flavor. The addition of the freshly sliced avocado a top the taco was a great idea and the creamy chipotle drizzle brought everything together nicely. Great stuff indeed. They have a great line of creative tacos and quite a list of scrumptious seafood offerings. The staff members in the truck were up beat and friendly. I liked that they took the time to walk the crowd and ask if their food was okay or if they needed anything else.

Yelp
The Fish Tacos and Shrimp Tacos are delicious and the freshest ingredients are used. The Fish Ceviche is some of the best I have had. Absolutely delicious!
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Most important is that El Cacho food truck has moved about a half mile to 1282 3rd ave just north of Palomar street on the west side of 3rd. They are hidden behind Tiajuana food garden, very easy to miss the turn in driveway. Much nicer location than on Main Street with shaded picnic benches and quieter. Great street seafood.
google avatar

Karem G.

Yelp
I like the taco stand better than the place located in Tiajuana Food Court. The food is still too expensive for what it is but I swear the flavor is different and the two people working here are nicer.

Yelp
I was on a little road trip passing by Chula Vista frantically searching for a good place to stop for food, when we just passed by this place. Imagine our luck! Btw, there is a food truck location which is in a lot on the side of a road, and then there is a newer location where El Cacho shares a space with several other eateries and there's a large outdoor seating area. All I can say is w o w. The menu is extensive but I'm a huge seafood fan so I went straight for the fresh ahi tuna/shrimp tostada. There was a pulpo (octopus) and shrimp one too and I love pulpo and asked if they could just add it to the ahi tuna one. They did it no extra charge! There was fried onion on top and plenty of avocado which really just hit the spot. It was quite pricy ($17) but well worth it for a MOUNTAIN of seafood. My friend got a steak and shrimp taco which was good, but not mind blowing, as well as a spicy tuna tostada (had the best kick!). They packaged the mariscos separately from the tostadas so it would not get soggy and it was perfect for takeout. Service was really quick - you walk up to order and then we waited less than 10 minutes then we were happy and on our way! Would 10/10 make the drive back down just for that fresh seafood!
google avatar

Priscella N.

Yelp
Oh man, I love me some aguachiles. I especially love them if they're freshly made and the shrimps are just barely cooked. I tried the chiltirindo aguachiles and they were a little too sweet for me. The verde and mango habanero was perfection! I also got a cocktail which was perfect and a agua Fresca de fresa *drool* definitely my new go-to mariscos spot. And right down the street from the old spot La Cacho.
google avatar

Alvaro S.

Yelp
The last time was there I asked the lady if she could play some oldies n she never did they keep playing the same music n it gets old so I stopped
google avatar

Taylor T.

Yelp
Fresh mariscos with unparalleled depth of flavor is what you'll find at El Cacho. I truly believe you can't go wrong while exploring this menu, but if you're after some truly unique flavors, the tuna tostada and the octopus taco will not disappoint! The basic fish taco is done perfectly. And washing it all down with agau fresca is a real summer treat! I'll be back often. And don't miss their new location in Pacific Beach next to Broken Yolk.
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is stupid good!!! I have tried the fish taco, shrimp tacos, ceviche ,shrimp cocktail and the Clamato and they have all been DELICIOUS. 10/10 would go again

Yelp
Very nice service staff, The person at the cashier take you order With smile And also the young man helping you To get what you need Please tip them

Yelp
My overall favorite Fish/Marisco truck in San Diego right now. As you know in the SouthBay there is a lot of competition in Marisco trucks & I've been to many of them. This one lately has been my favorite. Many of the other places the prices have gone up & portions & quality down. But not this place, portions are big & they have the most affordable prices with great quality of food & good customer service. I love that they have multiple tables to eat at & the service is good, they have people wiping tables down as people get up. Now let's talk about the food, wow, fresh, & everything with a lot of flavor. Can't go wrong with the fried fish or shrimp taco, also the Gobernado & Octopus taco are amazing! If you bring someone who ain't about the fish life it's ok they have Carne tacos too & one of my favorites here the Rosarito Taco, it has beans, Carne, white cheese & trimmings inside on a flour tortilla, it's on point! You should always judge a Fish/Marisco truck by it's Fish Taco & cheviche & this place has one of the best in SD in my opinion. Their fish chiviche which is the Tostada Ensanada was on point. They cut up in smaller pieces their fish chiviche which I love because I'm not a fan of serving it in big fish chunks. And yes their consome (fish broth) is free, love that! I really love this place so if you in Chula Vista & near by just make a stop here you won't regret it! And bring your own drinks that way you save money to buy more fish tacos :)

Yelp
Limited parking, have to be looking for where the food trucks are gathered to be able to find it as its not street front. No discount days, prices are the same everyday. 50c extra with use of credit card. Prices are more expensive then most, but quality is there. - Fish taco was whatever and more expensive then better places. - Octopus taco was deliciously Sauteed with onions, had a good degree of chewiness to it, and was happily surprised to find a slight kick. Expensive but worth it when cravings hit. - Free fish consome in size small. Careful before feeding it to your baby, it has a kick to it. - Sauces and pickled carrots are self serve. If eating there, they share the shaded picnic benches with the 2 other food trucks.

Yelp
The food here is AMAZING we had tacos de asada, chicken and adobada. The fish and shrimp tacos are delicious as well. But let me tell you the tostadas Sinaloa they are mouth watering and delicious. We ended up placing another order for those tostadas. The ambiance is great and had a great variety of music.

Breanna M.

Yelp
The food here is out of this world. The service is fairly quick, and even when they are busy it is worth the wait- trust! The mazatlan tacos, and the Sinaloa tacos are amazing! You leave craving it again even though you're still stuffed!
google avatar

Lin Y.

Yelp
This is my go to place for a fish taco and ceviche food truck. SO REFRESHING, SO DELICIOUS. Very affordable and usually packed. I bring all my family and friends visiting San Diego here and I like to joke that this place is so good, people cross the border for their mariscos. Good sized portions, great prices, and several unique dishes you don't see elsewhere like their clam ceviche, serrano spicy shrimp ceviche, fried fish shrimp and octopus combo taco, etc. They also do taco Tuesdays so their fish tacos are only $1. It's a 30 minute drive for me to get here but I don't hesitate everytime!
google avatar

Simore M.

Yelp
Passed this place everyday and finally had a chance to go. A couple of food trucks behind a soon to open sushi restaurant. The first food truck has taco Dorado, meat tostadas, sopes and things of that nature. The other truck is el Cacho which is famous for their seafood specialties. I'm not a fan of fried tacos where they lay the taco on its side and put the toppings on the outside. It's just super messy. I don't want a taco casserole. The seafood was piled high and tasty. Be careful the salsas are spicy but manageable. The outside seating area was super nice, very clean and surprisingly spacious.

Teresa L.

Yelp
So excited to try this please until the customer service so unprofessional they literally got upset because I was asking for extra napkins! The food so ok, But will not recommend or come back.

José R.

Yelp
Food is okay, service can be better. Waited for 30 for one taco which they forgot my order. This wasn't the first time this has happened when coming to eat here. Can't recommend

Michael F.

Yelp
I waited 35 min for a shrimp soup my lunch is only 30 min so I got to eat nothing and was late back to work. still hungry must of been hard to catch the shrimp that day.

Angie A.

Yelp
I love this place specially their new location on Broadway but did appreciate the customer service a Samantha...she was rude and totally ignoring me while I was putting my order! Totally disrespectful I was not asking for any free items or any accommodations just respect so I don't have to repeat my self and she still got my order wrong!!
google avatar

Yelp
Not really a big fan of truck food, I have too many bad memories of working construction in my early 20s of eating off trucks. But my friend swore by this place and has talked it up numerous times. Came by here on Sunday afternoon and the place was absolutely packed. They set up a nice easy-up and some plastic tables for you sit down in the shade. There was nowhere to sit when we arrived, but luckily some spots opened up when our food was finally ready. The El Cacho food truck specializes mostly in seafood choices but also caters to red meat eaters with a few choices with New York steak and arrachera meat. For seafood they have ceviche, shrimp, fish and octopus. I'm not too adventurous when it comes to seafood but I love myself a battered fish taco. So I ended up ordering 3 fish tacos and 1 rosarito taco which comes with arrachera and on a flour tortilla. The tacos here are massive, it says street tacos on the side of the truck, but these things are way bigger than your average street taco. The taco Ensenda came with a large piece of fried battered fish, topped with cabbage, tomatoes and some of their tasty creme sauce. The corn tortillas tasted fresh, even though I'm almost certain they don't make them there. The fish was crispy and perfectly cooked, there wasn't too much batter on the outside like a lot of places do. The Rosarito taco with a flour tortillas had chunks of seasoned arrachera meat, diced tomatoes, cilantro and a generous portion of fresh guac. The meat it's self was flavorful, not dry and there was plenty of it. They took the time to crisp the outside of the flour tortilla. So four tacos was quite the lunch, it definitely filled me up and for okay prices, average taco is about four bucks. They offer a good variety of drinks including agua frescas, liter Mexican cokes and cans of soft drinks. The hot sauce is kept up in the fridge towards the front, I highly suggest grabbing a bunch of this stuff, it was very good and they ran out when I was there. I was quite impressed with the quality of food here and the meal, my friend picked a winner.

Erika A.

Yelp
I had always eaten here until now I won't come again the seafood was spoiled this had never happened to me how good it was that they recognized it and gave me my money back
google avatar

Bella P.

Yelp
If you're craving fish tacos, this is the place to go! Fish a la Plancha was my fav but you can't go wrong with anything else on their menu. Don't forget to check out their Aguas Frescas!
google avatar

Korada S.

Yelp
Ordered my food and asked if they gave out soup as well since I love coming to these seafood trucks for it and the girl with the cheetah mask rolled her eyes with an attitude and said yes. I have no idea what I did or said. At the end of it, I didn't get my soup, she gave me the food with the mask off and they didn't devein the shrimp right. Save yourself the poor customer service and go across the street to Mariscos y Birriera El Prierto for better food.

A H.

Yelp
High prices low quality. Bad service bad food. No sauce included, be careful with raw food. Takes a while for your order To be read.
google avatar

Daniella S.

Yelp
The menu is so amazing ! There's so much to choose from whether you want to eat meat or seafood. I'm obsessed with the tostada de aguachile and the taco rosario with no cheese. My sister ordered the fish ceviche and so did my grandma. This is our go to food truck, honestly the best in the South Bay. There's shade and tables to eat outside, a bit noisy from the cars but it's nice just being outside. Sometimes there's a wait but always worth it! :)

Yelp
I met up with a coworker for lunch. As it was a fish taco Friday kinda day, we opted to check out El Cacho. It was a short jaunt between our two offices and a mini adventure. El Cacho is situated in a corner lot. When I got there, there was plenty of parking, which is accessible on both Main St and on 4th. I was surprised to find 2 other food trucks - one for sushi and another for your standard Mexican fair. Choices all around. But, I was feening for fish tacos. We ordered fish tacos and the Chulajuana tostada. They take both cash and card. Found seats at the communal tables in the patio area, which is cleaned regularly. Despite being busy, our food came out pretty quick. I think I could have eaten the fully stacked tostada alone and been fine. It was all yummy. Delicious, quick and cheap. Managed to keep my lunch in under an hour. Win-win.
google avatar

Areli S.

Yelp
Food is amazing!! We order the tostada especial - tostada san quintin- was very good, but had a little too much of the ketchup flavor, surf and turf fries were bomb!!!!! And the taco valle de Guadalupe was also super good. Didn't really care for the tostada Nayarit- it lacked flavor! Prices are very good, chipotle sauce and black sauce are very very good! Would definitely recommend and go back!
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
This place is a must try I've had several things on the menu their fresh fruit waters are tasty the Tia Juana tostada is my ultimate fav the surf and turf fries are delicious honestly everything I have had has been yummy
google avatar

Marina S.

Yelp
I'm talking about the food truck in Main Street ... the food really good but very cheap-with the avocado... buuuttt the customer service is really bad especially the girl who take the order always rolling eyes and if she didn't understand the order for any reason .. she blame the customer and said I ask you already...

Yelp
So many things to try.... burritos are great. Gonna have to make multiple trips to have it all. Clean eating area outdoors and aquas are legit.

Yelp
We're new to the area and my wife is craving with tacos, we saw the Place, it's nice outside, music is good, food is good nice and tasty what I notice is that.. table not clean used tissue on the floor and the worse thing is that employee lesslie (manager) are rude and stubborn in taking orders resulting 5 stars down to 2 stars
