The 38 Best Restaurants in Phoenix | Eater Phoenix

"If Phoenix has a signature dish, it just might be the Sonoran hot dog; and yes, the irony is deep, given that Sonora is the Mexican state that borders Arizona. But they’re everywhere here, offered in dozens of permutations. Local enthusiasts generally agree that El Caprichoso turns out the very best of its kind, served from a truck until well after midnight. People gather at picnic tables under a giant tent to eat plump, charred dogs, wrapped in bacon, cradled in puffy griddled buns, and smothered in whole pintos, grilled onions, guacamole, salsa, cotija cheese, and generous squirts of ketchup and mustard. Know before you go: This cash-only stand slings Sonoran dogs from a parking lot after sundown — messy, meaty, and very worth it." - McConnell Quinn

Phoenix, Arizona’s Best Restaurant Dishes and Drinks | Eater Phoenix

"The Sonora dog is perhaps Arizona’s staple with the most potential to stand as the state’s official dish, and El Caprichoso is serving up some of the best Sonoran dogs in the state. Originally created just south of the border in Hermosillo, Mexico, the Sonora dog has come to symbolize the unification of Mexican and American cultural ties, blending iconic elements of both countries’ cuisines in one dish. It can be dressed up however you like, but the most true-to-form version is a bacon-wrapped hot dog nestled in a soft split-top bolillo roll, loaded with beans, grilled onions, fresh tomatoes, guac, salsa, cotija cheese, ketchup, mayo, and mustard." - McConnell Quinn

Google
While in Phoenix, one of the things to do is to try a Sonoran Hot Dog. After some afternoon bar time, we just had to find a Sonoran hot dog and so glad we found the El Caprichoso truck!! The staff was no amazingly nice and the hot dogs were the best!! Not only do you have to try a Sonoran hot dog, but you absolutely need to try it from El Caprichoso!! I had the Sonora 4x4 and was NOT disappointed!

Google
Great hot dogs! And great service! Fast friendly, delicious.

Google
I pulled up here thinking it was a taco spot. But it turns out it's hot dogs. They make it fresh, and this spot is always busy.

The Vudoo Jungle

Google
Before they even opened, there was already a line. This was our first time trying it. I was not disappointed. There was a monsoon coming in and it was windy as heck but they were still out here setting up and cooking everyone’s food. Props to them for this. The hotdogs were super packed. They didn’t skimp on the fillings, it was delicious. The buns were so fluffy and soft. Not your typical hotdog bun. We really loved it. Definitely coming back soon!

Google
My 1st visit. Came for Sonoran Hot Dogs. They were delicious. Got mine to go. They have some tables and chairs, but everyone else was also doing to go orders. Plenty of room to park. I am coming back.

Google
When you want a HOTDOG REAL BAD 😂 and you find yourself in Phoenix Arizona this is the only place to try a Sonoran Hotdog. I highly recommend the Titanic and an ice cold coke in a glass bottle! Make sure to have a roll of paper towels. This is outside and it is a food truck.

Samantha Ross

Google
Food and service is amazing. Very nice people. Food is so fresh. However you want it. Nice cold glass bottle sodas. Hotdogs are piled high with fixins

Eric Chance

Google
I made a late night stop with some co-workers and was not only blown away by how great the food was but by their hospitality. We showed up just as they had finished closing up for the night. We mentioned we were from out of town, and here for work, and they fired the grill back up and made sure we were taken care of. I would definitely recommend this place on the food alone but the level of service we received was amazing.

Yelp
This establishment is located in car wash's dark parking lot after closing hours. Service was lackadaisical despite it not being crowded. I got service but my friend stood in front of the cashier for a very long time before he got to take his order. None of the items show the actual prices of anything. The receipt system is extremely janky and they have hidden charges just for using a credit card. I tried out their titular hot dog estilo sonora and their hot cheeto dog which cost $14.51. The hot dogs are stuffed full of items such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, onions, beans, tomato, cheese, and guacamole. The one thing that I thought was odd was that I didn't taste any bacon on any of the two hot dogs; thus, the bacon was pretty forgettable and washed away by all the other ingredients. Overall, an average experience.

Dionicio P.

Yelp
They legit don't care about the customers that are paying there and waiting for the food , while I was waiting for my food there was no wait time , people who order online were getting food before me , which I don't mind but. I would like to know if I'm be waiting for hours just for 3 hot dogs worst spot to come and waste your money for hot dogs rather go to Circle K

Steve W.

Yelp
It was a nice little place that we looked up on yelp and couldn't agree more with the stars. It was so good. People are very nice and easy-going. Highly recommend going here.

Jerri

Yelp
Best Sonoran hot dogs ever! Service is always satisfactory, atmosphere outside has a feeling of originality.

Yelp
My favorite Sonoran hotdogs! The service is great ! It's a food truck so the ambiance is a 1.

Tina S.

Yelp
So glad we decided to give it a try! The Sonoran dogs were amazing as was the Titanic!
google avatar

Yelp
We have driven by this place several times and have always noticed a crowd. Of course it was typically coming home from already eating. Finally we stopped to give it a try. Are we ever glad we did. Now we understand why they are always busy. These were delicious. We even got one for the dog and he thought the hot dog was amazing. We know that as it took him mere seconds to scarf it up. Lol

Yelp
The cook will be on his phone with the food handling gloves on and continue cooking after without changing his gloves. He had his phone next to him on the grill all night and was more concerned about what was on his phone instead of toasting up the buns. Took over 30 minutes because he was more worried about his phone than working. This should be a health code violation.

Yelp
Found this gem because I live close by! They toast their bun, & love that it comes with a Chile guero! My usual order would be with everything except for beans. It can get pretty crowded, you can call ahead / text them to order ahead. Highly recommend.

Yelp
First off, you have to be an adventurous type to trek out close to midnight and find these Sonoran dogs. This location feels like the middle of somewhere not safe, but once I was there, there were quite a few customers and there was a consistent stream of customers. The good thing about this place is that it's a food truck so you get your hot dog freshly cooked and if hot dogs aren't your thing, the menu is pretty extensive and covers other Mexican fare. The hot dogs are yummy, the bread soft and fluffy, and the condiments are provided ala cooler. Plus they have TV service... on this night I watched the Latin Billboard awards. You too, my friends can check out TeleMundo while you enjoy your comida. Don't let the location discourage you, it's worth the adventure... but I think I'll bring a friend next time instead of going by myself,

Yelp
Amazing hotdogs never had a Sonora and it was awesome, great customer service could see the cool smiling past the mask, plus I didn't even have to ask for napkins!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Hot dogs are 5/5, definitely will go back for some more of the Sonora style hotdogs. I found it by recommendation and it didn't disappoint

Lee K.

Yelp
So let down by these hotdogs.. To much bun to little hot dog. Surprisingly dry and bland flavor. Very underwhelming to say the least.. To top it off after eating one of the hot dogs. I noticed the bottom melted into the styrofoam. So you have way to big of a bun that's got melted foam all over the bottom. That's a pet peeve for me. I would not recommend this place Way overrated. Much better Sonoran dogs around the valley and Tucson. Emilio's is awful and still better than this place.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
This place is bomb!! Sonoran Hot Dogs are on point and fresh always and they are so friendly!!

Shannon G.

Yelp
This is the best Sonoran we have EVER had. The line was well worth the wait.... I highly suggest you come and get one. yum yum and yum again. Absolutely delicious.

Akiya D.

Yelp
Yummy!!!! Love this place, fast & amazing service. Its open late night and always hits the spot. One of the best Hot Dogs places I've found. Moved further away but will drive the distance to get these tasty dogs!!!

Alexander M.

Yelp
AMAZING! The food, the service, the and again the food was just off the charts, if you're really hungry, go here and you will be stuffed leaving, it's great food

Blah B.

Yelp
So, I have been going to this place for a long time. It was always good and the food is still good, if you can stand the service level or lack thereof. I have to preface this by stating the second to last time I went there I ordered the same thing I have always been ordering, for years. Two sonoran hotdogs with everything. I got home and proceeded to bite into the first glizzy and lo and behold they drenched it with salsa. Never has there been salsa on my sonoran hotdog. Never! I called in and they tried to convince me it always had salsa when you order everything on it. Uh-huh... sure, whatever... I'll let it slide. Even though I was out 10 dollars. Months pass by and I feel I will give it one last try the ole - fool me once, twice... you know... I show up and it is busy. I mean there are 20 ppl there waiting. Their whole grill is up and running. No one is standing in line and I wait for a couple minutes but no one approaches me. I then try to order because they have overstaffing (compared to the one person taking orders I usually see) and they pretend they don't speak any English. Fine. I wait and then this young teenage girl tries to take my order and this time I believe she spoke no English. I asked how long the wait is and they had to daisy chain it to the cook who with a dead pan face told me 30 minutes, after I had already sat there waiting for them to grace me with their presence so they can at least take my order. That would be 40+ minutes of wait time for hotdogs. GET THE FOH! Learn your craft, you know you are busy, make sure you get there on time or early... what a treat that would be so you are ready to go slanging them glizzies. Sadly, I doubt I will ever go back there again. Partially from these two experiences and a good part of it is it is located in tweaker hell - Sunnyslope. Shame...

Yelp
I was on my way home from the Cardinals vs Diamondbacks game, and I was a little bit famished. I didn't want any fast food, and I also didn't want to go to a diner type place. I had remembered my friend Liza had written a review of this spot, and I have also had it bookmarked for awhile now. I figured, now is the time, right? I decided to head up the 17 North and exit on Dunlap. Drove down a few blocks, made a left on 19th and this place is about a mile down 19th Ave. on the left. It's in a U-Haul parking lot. Pretty non descript, but you will find it without a problem if you keep your eye out. I pulled in the parking lot, approached the cart/dining area and was asked if it was for here, or to go? I said for here, and the nice young gentlemen told me to grab a seat and that he would be over in a minute. I decided to go with 2 Sonoran Hot Dogs (no mayo) and a Mandarin Jarritos. A few minutes later, my dogs were placed in front of me. Here is how they were........... Sonoran Hot Dogs- Right when they were placed down in front of me, I knew they were going to be awesome! Just on visual appeal alone, these warrant 5 stars! I noticed that the bun was grilled and had a nice toasty, buttery sheen to it. The top part of the bun reminded me of a New England split style hot dog bun. It sure was beautiful. I took a bite into my dogs and was overwhelmed with joy! This dog was wrapped with bacon, then topped with ketchup, mustard, avocado sauce?, jalapeno sauce, beans, tomatoes and some cotija cheese sprinkled on top. Everything just works! I am not a big fan of pinto beans. I am not a fan of ketchup on my hot dog...its almost sac religious! I am not a fan of cheap hot dogs. I am not the biggest fan of tomatoes. You know what though? This hot dog consists of ALL of those ingredients that I normally don't like, but it still tastes like a million bucks! Something about the combo of flavors makes it work perfectly! I'm pretty sure that bun is the key! It is toasty and a bit crunchy, yet pillow soft when you bite in, and deep enough to hold everything in without shit falling out all over the place. It's a perfect vehicle for this type of dog. I woofed down my 2 dogs and easily could have gone for another....maybe 2! These were not only the best Sonoran style dogs I have ever had, these dogs were some of the best "any kind of dogs" I have ever had. They were awesome. I almost don't want to try out any other Sonoran dog places in Phoenix because I am afraid I will be let down due to how perfect these were. Jarritos- Mandarin Jarritos. Bomb! You have to have an OG Mexican Coke or a Jarritos while eating food like this. Overall, it was $3.00 a dog, and $2.00 for the soda. $8.00 total for one of the best meals I have had in Phoenix! They are open late, the guy running the place was friendly, and the dogs were flat out awesome! Good find, Liza...good find! I now have a Sonoran dog spot I can recommend, take out of town visitors to, and keep coming back to myself! Damn, those dogs were good!

Lyndsey I.

Yelp
First time here. I usually get Sonoran hotdogs in Tucson where most are great, this is one of the best we've found in Phoenix so far! We don't get it with the queso. I reccomend. As of 08/2020 the demoran hotdogs are $4 and I'd say worth it :)
google avatar

Luisa H.

Yelp
What makes these the best Sonoran Hot Dogs in the valley is the soft fluffy bread. Combined with juicy dogs wrapped in bacon grilled perfectly and all the fixins, available in regular or large size! Cash only, pull in to/park in the car wash parking lot!
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Hit this place a couple times a week. Very authentic and the staff is very welcoming. Highly recommended late night snack...

Annabell H.

Yelp
Omg if you want a delicious sonoran hotdog this is the place to be!!!! He gets very busy around 7ish so be prepared to wait a little bit it is totally worth it!!
google avatar

Monique M.

Yelp
$3.00 each. Open till 2AM. If you're from a major city I don't need to say any more about "hole in the walls" or street vendors making the best food. You get it, you understand. Go here. Get one. Actually, get two. Grab a beer from QT on the corner, go home, and grub. You're welcome. To the three reviewers who sent me here: Thank you :) To the woman and man running this establishment: bless your hearts. You give NYC and Chicago hot dogs a run for their money!
google avatar

Tracy V.

Yelp
SOOO BOMBBBBB !!! Best Sonoran hot dogs ever on this planet ! So good and yummy I've been going since I was 12 and I'm 20!!' they are always so sweet I've never tried a hot dog better than this one EVER.
google avatar

Brenna C.

Yelp
Amazing Sonoran hot dogs. Hot dogs are cooked on a flat top after being wrapped in bacon. They are covered in beans with crema, guac and onions. But the bun is the BEST...so soft and spongy! Like no hot dog you've ever had!!!
google avatar

Ana F.

Yelp
Honest! The best hot dogs I've ever had here in Phoenix. The bread taste like no other hot dog bun I've ever had. The sausage and condiments put on the hotdog all come together to make you feel like you got fireworks in your mouth. The staff is really nice and welcoming. Will for sure comeback!
google avatar

Juan S.

Yelp
The best sonora hot dogs in phoenix. i would not exchange this place for any other is like a pedacito of your land, Amazing customer service , provide clean Area to Eat and good atmosphere. I have year caming to this place ,I visited different caprichosos but they do not compare with the amazing cook with her good attitude and the waiters of this place as long recive good servive with amazing attitude that make you feel like home i would keep caming here :)
google avatar

Pamela Q.

Yelp
I've been coming here since like 2011-12 I am not 100% but it's been a minute lol. The food is always good, it is busy but I mean you'll know why when you have a Sonoran hotdog with everything on it. It's worth the wait and sometimes they offer calling orders but that's courtesy so don't rely on that.
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
Must try! We just moved to Phoenix from San Diego and this is the best local place we've had! Definitely going back and the best part is that they're open late.

Roman R.

Yelp
Place was a bit difficult to get into, but man the Sonoran Dogs were out of this world. The soda was so chilled it had frost on it - perfect.
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
Yummy hot dogs! Don't let the "shady looking" location steer you away from the yummy-ness of this food! I usually don't eat hot dogs, but these are the best I've had! Great that they are open late for a to go midnight snack!
google avatar

Jodi J.

Yelp
No way would I just pull over for a dog in a 'riskay' part of town...but I am sure I will be finding myself here more often! It was late, our choices were Mexican or Burgars, but then I remembered that Dave liked this hot dog cart, so I suggested we stop here (he was thrilled). I got the loaded dog (-guac because of the avocado allergy) with a grilled bun. It was awesome. It had everything, beans, tomotoes, ketchup, mustard, sourcream and cheese. I think I may be drooling as I write the review and think about it. I wanted to eat another; but I refrained because I knew it would put me over the edge. I don't know this chicks hours, but I am sure I will be checking in and eating at this place out more often!
google avatar

Liza E.

Yelp
OMG!!! This place is the best!!! I love hot dogs, but usually I will only eat them with the most general toppings... ketchup, mustard, relish... but this place just BLEW MY MIND! For $3 you get a hot dog wrapped in bacon in a bun with beans, tomatoes, cheese, mayo, guac, onions, ketchup, and mustard. I decided to go for the almost all but the mayo and onions and it was so effin delicious!!! PROS: The hot dog bun is TO DIE FOR!!! The crispy bacon wrapped around the hot dog is perfection... the whole gosh darn thing is too delicious to put into words. Go get one!!! CONS: Cash only, it's in a car wash parking lot...

Todd M.

Yelp
One of my favorite things about Phoenix is finding small restaurants/trucks, with owners who do their marketing with the quality of their food. El Caprichoso on 19th ave is one such pop-up restaurant. Outstanding food, carefully prepared for a delicious result. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Stephon C.

Yelp
Read the reviews from yelp, drive by this place all the time, but I always had skepticism about street vendors from prior experiences. Short story, wow. This is some good food. There's so much going on, but it all equals a great hot dog. At 3 bucks a pop there's not reason to not stop by and grab at least one to give it a shot.
google avatar

Tristan S.

Yelp
Best Sonoran Dogs in Phoenix. I found out about Sonoran dogs 10 years ago, and get them occasionally as a treat, and these are really good. The flavors were distinct and plentiful. I will definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Caro F.

Yelp
On point every time. I'd been here a few times. Check it out. Cheap, and the dogs are good for a craving. One time at a family birthday party, they rolled up and provided yummy hot dogs for everyone. I was like, I KNOW the Caprichoso! yum. They catered the party, my tio had the connection.
google avatar

Alvaro B.

Yelp
We live in Bullhead City, Arizona and this is a place where we must eat when we come to Phoenix. BEST HOT DOGS EVER! And really good service...
google avatar

Frank Y.

Yelp
Never disappointed with their food inexpensive and great tasting, way better than anywhere I've ever go beside this place. I was told they don't accept debit cards by the man that took my order but they do... luckily I had cash on me. I ordered 4 dogs with everything came out in less than 5 minutes.
google avatar

Lissette S.

Yelp
My favorite! I actually got someone addicted to them he had never heard of them before. I highly recommend trying this place! At least try it once the customer service is great as well, they are always sweet and prompt.

Peder V.

Yelp
We've enjoyed Sonoran style dogs for years, in several states in USA and Mexico. This stand is one of my family's all time faves. Highly recommended, and we are fussy. Perfect bun, just slightly toasted, can taste beans but not drowning balance of flavors. Best of Phoenix. Authentic - This is the real deal.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Living in the area this might not feel like the best of locations. The reviews don't lie, the sonoran dogs are excellent and for being out doors with a pop up tent and a handful of tables and chairs everything was kept quite clean. Only thing to note is that the cart is cash only but at three bucks a dog you can probably scrounge the floor of your car in a pinch.
google avatar

Ana B.

Yelp
Great service, great food and great music. Even though it was packed the guy tends to everyone with a smile and takes his time to make each hot dog to perfection. I will definitly be coming back
google avatar

Beyauna B.

Yelp
If you know sonoran dogs, you know you have to get two things right...the bun, and the bacon. Check and check! This place has the best steamed, then grilled buns. The bacon is actually crispy and crunches when you bite it. The usual Sonoran dog toppings are present, with a little queso cotija sprinkled on top, but this dog is special. Just go try it for yourself.
google avatar

Jacob E. G.

Yelp
These are some really good Mexican hot dogs. I have only been here once but I got to have more.
google avatar

Rafael C.

Yelp
Great Sonoran hotdogs! We go to this place all the time. Never had an issue, even when it's been busy. Flavor is always consistent. Good place to eat.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Huge fan! If you know anything about Sonoran style hot dogs... you know that the bun and the bacon wrapped weenie are KEY. The man behind the grill generously loads the dog with everything from beans, avocado, cheese, chilis, onions, ketchup, and whatever else your heart desires. go for the "lleno con todo" (filled with everything) you wont regret your choice. And at $3 bucks a piece, dude, get 2!
