Phoenix’s 17 Iconic Dishes

"The Sonora dog is perhaps Arizona’s staple with the most potential to stand as the state’s official dish, and El Caprichoso is serving up some of the best Sonoran dogs in the state. Originally created just south of the border in Hermosillo, Mexico, the Sonora dog has come to symbolize the unification of Mexican and American cultural ties, blending iconic elements of both countries’ cuisines in one dish. It can be dressed up however you like, but the most true-to-form version is a bacon-wrapped hot dog nestled in a soft split-top bolillo roll, loaded with beans, grilled onions, fresh tomatoes, guac, salsa, cotija cheese, ketchup, mayo, and mustard." - Mcconnell Quinn

The 38 Essential Restaurants in Phoenix

"If Phoenix has a signature dish, it just might be the Sonoran hot dog; and yes, the irony is deep, given that Sonora is the Mexican state that borders Arizona. But they’re everywhere here, offered in dozens of permutations. Local enthusiasts generally agree that El Caprichoso turns out the very best of its kind, served from a truck until well after midnight. People gather at picnic tables under a giant tent to eat plump, charred dogs, wrapped in bacon, cradled in puffy griddled buns, and smothered in whole pintos, grilled onions, guacamole, salsa, cotija cheese, and generous squirts of ketchup and mustard." - Nikki Buchanan, Chris Malloy

This is the kind of spot you dream about after a long night out—the smell of bacon-wrapped dogs sizzling on the grill pulling you in like a magnet. No gimmicks, no fancy nonsense, just pure, greasy, glorious flavor punched straight into a fresh bun. El Caprichoso doesn’t mess around. Every hot dog is a beast: crispy bacon, creamy toppings, grilled onions, jalapeños, and that hit of smoky char you can smell from a block away. You order, you wait with a bunch of other hungry people who know what’s about to happen, and then you take that first bite—and it’s game over. The crew here runs a tight ship—fast, friendly, and they pile your dog high like they’re feeding family. It’s messy, it’s over-the-top, and it’s everything you didn’t realize you needed at 11 p.m. (or honestly, anytime). If you’re looking for a polished, white-tablecloth experience, keep moving. If you want real-deal street food that hits your soul? El Caprichoso is where legends are made.

Every time I have been here the food is top tier and I have been here 15+ times in a couple years. It would be more tbh if I lived closer 😂 $6 is an amazing price since most places charge more. El Caprichoso buns are always fresh and perfect, they have figured out the perfect combo for the best flavor. They have won my award for The Best Sonoran dog in Arizona

Real Sonora hot dogs! They bring the food to you which is nice!

The best Sonoran hotdogs in the world!! This is a must go place if you are within 100 miles!

Google
Tourist here, just passing through, and I heard that a sonoran hot dog was something I had to try, and man, am I glad I did. This was so good! I was worried it would be too spicy for me, but it wasn't spicy at all and had excellent flavor. The guys working were super nice, and there was plenty of seating.

Google
One of the best street food of Phoenix!!! Came to this place per recommendations from Yelp, turned out to be one of the best hotdogs I've ever eaten. The home-made sausage 🌭, placed in the middle of bun, the most amazing part was their toppings, except ketchup and mustard, they put their homemade mexican sauces onto it. Let me put it this way, it's the only hotdog that I didn't have to put on more ketchup and mustard. Another thing worth mentioning here is though the environment is not a cozy one, but it's a chilling one, definitely will revisit it again!!!

Google
Here’s an update we came on 5/15/ 24 their menu still not updated now it went from 5 bucks to 6 dollars is unbelievable that this happens. FALSE ADVERTISING FIX UOUR DANW MENU. Pretty good place here’s the menu updated all the pictures you see are from a year ago or more last time we were here dogs were only $3.50 and even though they’re 5 bucks the quality still pretty consistent. Take cash if you don’t want to pay extra for using your card

Google
Best sonaran dog in phoenix. Open late nights, fast service, unique menu options, and the food is delicious. If you haven't been, you need to go if you enjoy 🌭. This place also has a drive through in addition to the seating area that's outside.

Yelp
I'd give them 10 STARSSSS if I could, this place has the BEST bacon wrapped Sonoran style hot dogs in Arizona hands down and for the best value, my family loves it here. $5 for the regular ones, and $9 for the Titanic (double hot dog on bigger bread (HUGE) I LOVE THEM. You gotta Try the toppings (I recommend beans, queso cotija, mayo) & try the sauces too (chipotle, melted cheese sauce, salsa Verde) Shown in pics: titanic dog with everything,& all their sauces

Yelp
Date: Sunday July 2nd, 2023 Time: around 6pm Meal: Dinner Takeout I love me a good hotdog. So does the hubby. And a bacon wrapped one?! Yum! When I read trying a Sonoran hot dog was a must in Phoenix, I decided to check out this spot. It's a cart and I think they weren't quite set up yet, so we had a bit of trouble finding it. After circling a bit, we finally found it! We were ordering for the hub's fam as well, so we grabbed a bunch of different dogs. I can't remember for the life of me what I ordered, but knowing me, I'm pretty sure we sampled a good amount of the menu. I did ask for one without the bun and they happily obliged. I know that's blasphemy to some, but gotta watch those carbs from time to time? Just to get a feel for the menu, here are a few prices - Hot Dog Estilo Sonora ($5), Titanic Estilo Sonora ($9), Rufflo Dogo ($6), Cheetos Flamin Hot Dogo ($6). We were ordering for the kids too, so some of the dogs were plain, but I adored the dogs with toppings. The bread is soft and fluffy and the dogs were nice and juicy. They have three locations. Two are card and cash - this one and the one on 19th Ave, and the one at 1118 N 35th Ave is cash only. They have an area where you can sit and eat, but since we were doing takeaway, we just sat there while we waited. I am a big fan of food carts and this one did not disappoint. REVIEW #3463

Yelp
Did not have any expectations from this place but it turned out amazing! The titanic hotdog was HUGE and can honestly feed 2. Place is your typical outdoor, food truck vibes. Food came out relatively fast as well. Overall great experience and would go again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
About 6 months ago, I was driving at night and saw this place and thought I would try it. It's a little stand on the side of the road with plenty of tables to sit at. That was my first time having a sonoran hot dog and let me tell you, it was amazing. I ordered the first one with all of the toppings except jalapeño sauce. I just went back and it was still pretty good, but the dog and the bun weren't broiled. That's part of what made it so delicious. Still 4 stars, but I was kind of disappointed last night.

Yelp
I visits this Sonoran hotdog place while I was on a work trip in phoenix, Arizona and let me tell you it did not disappoint! I had never had this type of hotdog before. I got mine with hot Cheetos on it and it was delicious. The pinto beans on it makes it so good. The bread that they use is very fresh and soft. Next time I'm in Arizona I will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Their food was amazing. (HOT DOG SONORA) the staff were friendly. The place was clean and ready to go. Super cool vibe there.

Yelp
The Sonoran Dog with everything is the way to go! Must stop & the service was fantastic! Can't wait to get another on my next trip to AZ!

Yelp
First time trying out this place. The overall vibes is really nice and inviting. It's self seating and you can either order at the front counter table they have set up or order at the seating area and somebody will come and take your order. They take both cash and card. Service was swift without any issues and food came out fast. We ordered the titanic hot dog with everything. Everything includes: Ketchup Mustard Grilled onions Beans Tomato Guacamole Jalapeño salsa Cotija cheese And a grilled pepper on the side Personally I thought the overall taste of the food was okay. There wasn't enough meat to other ingredient ratio for my taste. The hot dog itself wasn't really flavorful either. It tasted pretty bland in my opinion. Overall I enjoy the experience of trying out a new item that's popular to the area but personally I didn't find it tasteful.

Yelp
FORGET everything you thought you knew about hotdogs because 'El Caprichoso' is out here redefining life itself! Have you ever had a hotdog wrapped in bacon? Sure. But how about a hotdog stuffed into a chile relleno then wrapped in bacon??? That's right, you read that correctly, a hotdog INSIDE a chile relleno, THEN wrapped in bacon!!! This creation defies the laws of physics, common sense, and every single diet out there-but you won't care. Napkins? Futile. Eating it is like a food fight that you have already lost. Dignity? Gone. Your shirt will never be the same. Satisfaction? Through the roof. Your taste buds will be writing love songs. Honestly, if you don't try this, are you even living, or are you just existing in a sad, hotdog-less void? Go now, before they realize this kind of magic should be illegal.

J L.

Yelp
Did the drive through. Sonoran hot dog is not my cup of tea, but bread was nice pillowy, dog was a bit salty didn't have much bacon taste, tons of topping to include beans which didn't taste bad, I skipped the jalapeño sauce. Titanic is big plate of food for a real hungry person or shared for 2. Service was good walk up to window to ask me what I wanted. Can't say much about ambiance but it's a pop up with bench sitting families seem to be having a good time.

Yelp
10/10!!! Súper delicioso!! Lástima que no están abierto más temprano! Cada vez que estoy en el aria tengo que pasar

Yelp
I love this place. Sonoran dogs are a staple, and this place is my favorite in the valley. I will say though if you're not a Spanish speaker or aren't comfortable speaking Spanish it might be difficult to order - not impossible, but there's usually a language barrier - it's all part of the experience though! Everyone that works there is super friendly regardless. If you drive too fast, you'll miss it, so pay attention when your GPS tells you to turn. The most recent time I went there, it was like five minutes til close (felt bad about that one lol), but they were still equally as friendly, and the food slapped.

Yelp
I read an Eater article about iconic foods to try in the Phoenix area, and the Sonoran Hot Dog was on the list. Glad that I tried the Titanic Sonoran Dog. It comes with tons of toppings, and you can customize the ones you want. It's good sized and will fill you up. The menu has six items posted on a large banner. We went to the N 35th Street location. It seemed like a fairly large setup. While there are quite a few people waiting, the service is fast. There is a small parking lot. This location has a drive-thru, and the cars going to the drive-thru go through the parking lot. Backing out of the parking spot was a little challenging with the cars in line for the drive thru.

Yelp
This place is a must try. I ordered literally ate the hot dog cold after an hour of handling business and was still fire. I don't even care for beans and still was delicious. Service was quick. The vibe of the place was outdoor dining or grab and go. Not much of an atmosphere. But overall a must go

Yelp
My to go hot dog place it is fast and accurate. Never had to wait for too long. Always hot. Never disappoints.

Yelp
We had to complete our last night in Phoenix with some Sonoran hot dogs! We knew this place would be good just from the line. It literally wrapped around the whole building. It barely moved at one point, so we got out of the car and decided to just go inside to order. Their place is outside, where they cook everything and have a whole assembly line and they have tables and chairs set up under the tent. We were planning to get ours to go anyways, but inside was pretty packed. One of the gentlemen greeted us right away and took our orders. We ordered two of everything to share with our group of friend's. We couldn't decide and were going to cut it up so everyone got a sample to eat. We got the original, the ones topped with sour cream and cheddar ruffles, the ones topped with hot cheetos and the titanic! All of them were good, but my favorite was the original. All pretty much were bacon wrapped, beans, topped with onions, sour cream, I think Avocado. The semi sweet charred bun was a great touch. Definitely some drunk food, but also good sober. Will definitely come back to try again.

Yelp
My first time trying a Sonoran Dog and this place was top of the list everywhere I looked. The establishment is a giant tent with the kitchen and tables set up, very authentic but can be a little chilly so wear something warm if going later in the day when it's cooler. Both of these items were amazing!! The bread was probably the best part. I think I liked the Hot Cheeto just a little more due to personal preference but would definitely order both again. Pretty decent prices too! Try this place!
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
Admittedly not a hot dog eater but you must try this at least once. It's very straightforward. Order. Sit. Eat. I saw a review about the best Sonoran dogs in Phoenix and had to try this. It was a simple food truck with tables and chairs. Very clean and nice although there is some traffic on 19th avenue. Service was very efficient and friendly. The bacon wrapped dogs smell so good while they are cooking and they pile them high with all kinds of stuff! I loved the bread. It is not from a wrapper but from a bakery somewhere and was incredibly fresh. We ended up doing take out and eating at home on our patio. Great place to take an out of town guest who is up for the real Sonoran dog experience.
google avatar

Austin K.

Yelp
Unique and delicious. Small size is $6, Titantic large size is $10 and you can ask them to cut it in half. They take cards. Comes topped like a taco with everything, there's even a side bar with additional toppings you can add yourself like nacho cheese and pickled veggies. The bun is like a soft chewy flatbread. Overall it's unique and a must try for the area!

Yelp
Love this place best hots dogs on 35th N Thomas my favorite hotdog is the hot Cheeto one or the titanic

Yelp
The perfect Soñoran hot dog does exist! In fact, you can find it in West Phoenix at this little hot dog stand. Everything about it is amazing... from the grilled onions, good placement of toppings, and toasted buns... it's just a magical experience. Service is really fast so I can appreciate that despite having to go through a mission in finding a parking spot. You can expect this place to be busy on a regular basis... i would suggest bringing cash because there are local vendors selling bread and other goods at this location.
google avatar

Mo M.

Yelp
2nd visit here on the run. They get pretty busy fast! They also have drive thru available and I am always treated very well. If you opt to sit in, you can sit anywhere and will be served almost immediately. Very clean and the best Sonoran hot dog I have ever tasted! I loved the charred bun and the bacon is light and crispy yummy! Please try one! Def recommend

Yelp
They OPEN at NIGHT. The hours listed on Yelp are wrong. They aren't open in the morning. Yelp lists them as opening at 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, they open at 7 pm every night according to El Caprichoso's website and they're closed when I called repeatedly at 8 a.m. hoping to get a Sonoran dog.

Lizzy A.

Yelp
Love their hot dogs. I moved further away and I still make the drive because other places with Sonoran hot dogs just don't hit the same. Drive thru is a plus

Yelp
If I go for a late night Sonoran Dog, I usually travel to the one on 19th and Dunlap. Always have, and always will....except for tonight! I had read the reviews of this place and it looked a lot bigger and more spacious than the Dunlap one. It was already late and I wanted to get home, so we went to this one since we were down near the 10. I went with 2 hot dogs and a mandarin Jarritos. A few things about this place compared to the 19th ave one......... - This one has WAY more seating. It was POPPIN! There were easily 40 people there coming and going, getting their hot dogs. They do a great business here! - This one is also a tad more expensive for a hot dog ($3.50 here, compared to $3.00 at 19th). - This one you have to order at the counter, then grab a seat. I was used to the other one where they come take your order, so we sat there for a few minutes and eventually a guy came over, but that was an exception. At this one, step up to the table, tell them what you want, then go take your seat. - They do have an armed security guard here, which is nice. The 19th Ave location is straight hood, and I have literally seen crackheads walking around and crossing the street etc, all while eating my dog. Never really felt uneasy or scared, but I wouldn't mind if I was carrying while eating there. This location has you covered if any riff-raff shows up. - The hot dogs here are tasty, but not AS tasty as the 19th Ave location. This location does so much more business, I think they need to pump out the dogs a lot faster. The bacon was not grilled and crispy as the other location. Since they use a cheaper style hot dog, the bacon really elevates the flavor profile, and this spot could have cooked/crisped it up a bit more. The other ingredients were pretty much the same, and the buttered and toasted bun was delicious as always. Overall, still a damn fine Sonoran Dog! If you want a place to chill at and definitely have a spot to sit, this is your place. If you want a slightly better dog for a buck or so less (assuming you eat a few and get a drink), go to the 19th Ave and Dunlap location. Either way, El Caprichoso is the best Sonoran Dog in Phoenix (regardless of location)!

Nathaniel G.

Yelp
They made us wait 1 hour and 10 minutes just for us to eat in 8 minutes for so little food and everyone around us got their food and left their were over 14 people there and they all had eaten and left and the food wasn't even that good as it used to be and it had rained and they didn't even turn on the thermal heaters.
google avatar

Erika A. R.

Yelp
I mean hands down best hot dogs in the valley. I have eaten here for years and the quality stays the same. Delicious sonoran hot dogs...

Angela S.

Yelp
This food truck is one of the few that offer drive throughs accessibility as well as a dinning area and plenty of parking for customers. The food was delicious!! The buns were toasted, soft, and fresh. The meal was 10/10!!
google avatar

Karla A.

Yelp
Service was awful people have an attitude when asking questions. I stood in front for 5 min and nobody said anything to.I had their food and it was nothing special.
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
My favorite place to get a Sonoran style hot dog either in general or after a night out, El caprichoso always hits the spot

Cheers G.

Yelp
This spot does not live up to the hype that social media is rotating around! This hot dogs were disgusting, no flavor, the Winnie was not cooked, they used the cheapest bacon they could've use. I did not ate my food, the only person that greeted us was the guy selling sweets at the entrance. They were busy, but I'm sure it's because they also saw their hyped up post, i do NOT recommend this place at all.

Mike G.

Yelp
You have no idea how good this place is. Nothing compares to this hidden gem. Best in AZ!!!

Yelp
This place is so good! The bread is so fresh and delicious. The toppings are on point. I got my fully loaded.

Yelp
Service was phenomenal!! The employee working, handled ALL the tables himself, very good service. As for food, i got the sonora hot dog, overpriced.. i dont see the hype! Prob would not return.

Yelp
Update. Am currently at the dog stand and had a much better experience than last week. I must say though that I did see one person they had given a to go box to tonight appeared to be one of the area homeless population. I still don't think they should have been treated different than any other paying customer. But much better tonight!

Yelp
First off all... I want to say we're from Chicago.... Home of the best hot dogs in the US! At first, I had my doubts, ...a Mexican hotdog??? but after just one bite...I was like "WOW" maybe they're on to some thing here!! These hot dogs are amazing!! My girlfriend and I loved them so much we had to go back one more time before the end of our trip here in Phoenix. Looking forward to returning to Phoenix and adding this to my list of must stop places to eat!
google avatar

Oscar V.

Yelp
Best hotdogs in town hands down! Wait is a little long on weekend nights, but it's definitely worth the wait!
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
There's nothing not to love about this place. You order first and then have a seat. The hot dogs came out super fast. Of course I ordered mine with everything. When I ordered I almost got 2 but 1 was filling! The roll was super soft and almost melted in your mouth. All the flavors you except in a Sonoran dog were there. Came out hot and fresh. Currently as I type this I'm having a Sonoran hot dog craving! Please hit this spot up! It's nothing fancy and hits the mark where it counts with the food and service!

Deanna R.

Yelp
Bomb hot dogs but very over priced now (they were $3.50 & now $5). The wait is ridiculous, they need to get another location that is larger. There were cars parked on exits to beat the wait holding up the line for the cars waiting in the drive thru creating chaos. The drive thru mess is absurd & not to mention the long wait time applies when you are trying to dine-in, carry out, & call in your order. If you are looking for bomb hot dogs this is your place, but be prepared to wait longer than 45 min.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
I forgot what hotdog I got, had mozzarella and bacon it in tho! SO GOOD OMG!! I've always been wanting to try Sonoran hotdogs & so glad my husband took me to get some!! Full of flavor and so so so delicious! If you're in Avondale you have to try this food truck out!!!!

L. S.

Yelp
Increíble!!! Absolutamente la mejor comida que a comido desde que llegue de Oregon!!! Sonora Hotdogs are absolutely delicious!! Perfect spice, simple and super chill!! 100% recommended!!

Yelp
One of the best things about visiting the west side of Phoenix is the numerous spots for Sonoran hot dogs. My personal favorite spot to go to is El Caprichoso. Regular hot dogs do not compare these Sonoran hot dogs. These dogs are placed in bolillo-style hot dog bun, and topped with beans, onions, tomatoes, and a variety of condiments including mayo, mustard, cotija cheese and other ingredients I can't think of at the moment lol. Two hot dogs can satisfy your hunger. Wash it down with Coke (from a glass bottle, not a can lol). That combination itself makes it a perfect meal.

Yelp
Sonoran hot dogs? If you've had them, you know why they're so iconic. If you haven't and you love hot dogs, its time to get with the program. Purportedly a Tucson creation, Sonoran hot dogs have steadily gained in popularity in the valley. Restaurants, food trucks, and makeshift food stands are now serving them up in an abundance. Like this place. I first heard about El Caprichoso after reading the Arizona Republic's Dominic Armato speak glowingly about the hot dogs. That was shortly followed by the Phoenix New Times giving El Caprichoso the nod for best Sonoran hot dog in the valley. Coupled with great initial Yelp reviews, I decided a Friday night hot dog run was just the thing I needed. You'll find El Caprichoso's makeshift food stand setup on the west side of 35th Avenue just south of Thomas Road. In the parking lot next to Los Portales Mexican Food after 6pm at night, you'll see a lit up makeshift tent. Aureliano Dominguez is the owner of this place and is credited as one of the first to popularize the Sonoran hot dog here in the valley. A full staff mans the mobile kitchen and grill as you walk up to the tent to put in your order with the friendly staff up front. Give em your order, pay up front (they do take credit cards btw), and either grab a seat or get it to go. There's banquet tables and chairs setup under the tent with room for up to about 50, but when I was there at 6:30pm it was packed! Every seat was taken and the queue up front was over a dozen deep. So I got my food to go this time. And in case you're wondering, yes I was the only gringo in sight (don't worry they speak English y Espanol). You've got two choices for your Sonoran hot dog. The traditional or the titanic (two hot dogs and twice the ingredients). Not feeling Herculean this go around, I asked for a traditional. The specs: a grilled hot dog wrapped in cooked bacon, topped with tomatoes, baked beans, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, guacamole, jalapeño salsa, Cotija cheese, and caramelized onion all held together (barely) by a full size hot dog bun. Total cost? $4. Came out ready in a styrofoam container in about 5 minutes. The verdict? Divine. A very messy, very unhealthy and rib sticking monstrosity. And I loved every bite. Hot dog was cooked perfectly with just a little crunch, the beans were excellent and the guacamole really helped meld all the sauce concoctions together. It wasn't unusual to see people order the titanic sized one and I even saw people taking orders of a dozen hot dogs to go. I guess they like it as much as I did. My advice? Get here early because the line only got longer after I left. A cool west Phoenix nighttime neighborhood haunt. And a fantastic hot dog at a price virtually anyone can afford. El Guero Canelo and others also make delicious Sonoran hot dogs here in the valley, but for the moment I would agree with the Republic and the New Times. El Caprichoso es la mejor.

Yelp
The spot is opened late, we got sonoran hot dogs, my order was turkey links without the bacon warp but with everything on it. And it was delicious. Definitely a spot i go to for my hot dog fix.
google avatar

Hector A.

Yelp
This hot dog was so damn good the way it was served with. I ordered the titanic dog. The bread! The bread was soft and fluffy and hathered all the flavor from all the toppings.

Mariam G.

Yelp
This place used to be my go to 3 years ago but they just gave up on the flavor n quality of the food I went about a year ago n it wasn't as good decided to give them another try n I was highly disappointed they took the spice off n the hot dog tasted boiled n then grilled n the prices went up for lower quality food

Yelp
The Best Sonoran Hot Dog in Phoenix, bar none! The atmosphere might appear troubling to some, but don't be a little bitch, it's west Phoenix after all. They have armed security, so you'll be fine! The hot dogs are definitely the star here, just look at the lines on a Friday or Saturday night. I've been here for years now and I've never waited more than 15 min for 3+ hot dogs.

Yelp
This place is the BEST hot dog stand there is in this area. I've been coming here for over 10 years. I've tried many other stands but this is by far the best. The bread is so soft the ingredients are very fresh. All the employees are doing everything to help the spread of COVID-19 as they all have gloves and masks on. If you want something quick and fast this is not for you. This is a gourmet hotdog so you will have to wait, This is not McDonalds.
