"Located on the northern edge of the 23rd Street taco corridor, El Chaparro offers all the usual standards, but the house specialty — and the main reason to visit — is Hidalgo-style lamb barbacoa. You can buy it as a taco or a plate that comes with rice and beans, but the real pro move is to order an entire pound of meat, which comes with little baggies of onion, cilantro, and lime wedges; three different salsas; and a thick stack of tortillas that you can use to build your own tacos. Don’t forget to order a big tub of deep-red consomé, which is rich and clarifying, studded with chickpeas and chunks of tender lamb — the perfect thing to sip between bites." - Luke Tsai, Eater Staff

"The Hidalgo-style lamb barbacoa specialist is open for takeout during its regular hours (8 a.m.–9 p.m. and open at 7 a.m. on the weekends). What could be more satisfying, during this extended shelter-in-place period, than a big pile of slow-cooked meat? Order tacos, or get your barbacoa by the pound and build your own at home. Whatever you do, don’t forget to order a tub of the rich, clarifying consomé — the perfect thing to sip between bites. Call in or order at the counter." - Luke Tsai

Delicious lamb barbacoa served with warm homemade tortillas, flavorful salsas, and a generous amount of cilantro and onions. I ordered the 1/2 lb barbacoa with a small consommé (still quite a large bowl) along with a side of rice and beans. Reminded me a bit of South Philly Barbacoa in Philadelphia. Finished the meal with some warm atole de elote to drink. I loved this meal!

Google
I got the Lamb Barbacoa 1/2 lb it was really tasty enough for two days. I got it to go and added some stuff but it came with onions, cilantro, lime and salsa. The salsa was too hot for me so I added my own and some cheese and sour cream. I enjoyed it and I will go back to try the burrito and the tamale. Staff was friendly you can dine in. It's very basic nothing elaborate more authentic then Americanized.

Google
It was very good, I had a salad. The salad was good for a Mexican restaurant, and it was reasonably priced. The Mexican waters or drinks were good. This place has someone bring you the food, but no actual table service. The music was a little too loud, but we sat right in front of the speaker. So that would have been an easy fix.

Google
The food is fresh, delicious, and full of flavor. Felt like my grandma was back there cooking!!!

Good fresh food. Was waiting for my car to be washed across the street. Nice friendly older gentlemen kept my company. I would go back for him and the food.

One of the best Menudos. The barbacoa de Borrego to die for

Yelp
I came by to try out the caldo de res. Got it to go. This was my first time here. I had to wait a while for my food, which was fine, I wasn't in a hurry. It's a small restaurant, a lot of things were in Spanish. I understand some of it, but that's when Google comes in handy. Parking can be challenging. I had to park at the end of the block, but that's how most of places on 23rd are. Lucky for me that I can always ride my scooter over here next time. The soup was delicious by the way, lots of meat & veggies. Side of tortillas, salsa, onion and cilantro. Definitely recommend

Yelp
I found my spot for menudo in Richmond on 23rd St y'all! I come here just for the menudo. I haven't ventured out to other menu items. Hubby has tried the burrito and tacos. Ooouuu, the tripas tacos are fire! My son tried the authentic quesabirrias. He ate it and enjoyed the consomé, but next time we will sub out the meat option. I need to up my Spanish speaking game. The owner and staff are always so nice either way and I get my order in just fine! Place is always clean and we get fresh chips and salsa. Oh, and hubby enjoyed his michelada!

Samantha L.

Yelp
Not worth for tacos. Better to get the soups Dishes: -lengua and tripa taco ($3.5 each) -horchata ($3) Pro: -handmade tortilla -lots of cilantro, onion, limes, and salsa -horchata was delicious Con: -the taco meat was not what the typical meat was -tacos were very oily -the tortilla wasn't cooked with a bit of the taco juice so it was bland

Yelp
We found a new spot for Consomé and Barbacoa! We came across this place while driving in the area and we're glad we did. Their set up is pretty well thought out to streamline the ordering/dine-in/pick-up. The staff is friendly and helpful. We've ordered the Huarache, Gorditas, Consomé and barbacoa, and Panbazos. We were pleasantly surprised at how good it all was and had the authentic taste too. I make my own panbazos and these were GOOD! They're barbacoa and Consomé is delicious and highly recommend this place. La barbacoa y consomé están requisitos y no meten gordura ni huesos a la libra. This is our new go to place for Barbacoa and consomé.

Yelp
Been here three times in the last week. Its been prety consistent. Keep in mind that The prices on the menus dont match the prices they charge you. Its a bit annoying but not a big difference, hopefully they update their menus to reflect the new prices theyre charging.

Yelp
It's hard to find good Mexican food in the bay, being raised in LA I have a good taste for tacos and Mexican dishes. Not to mention my mamas cooking was fire. So when we found this place driving on our way back home, BF spotted it and urged me to stop. The second I walked in I recognized the smells of tortillas being heated up and meat mixed with aroma of spices being cooked. I saw the chille relleno plate on the menu and I knew I had to get it. BF got gorditas de chicarrón. I ate most of his third gordita . I was taken back to my mothers native birthplace, Uruapan Michoacán and the authentic Mexican food I loved growing up. I can't forget the handmade aguas frescas, our favorite melon Service was quick and friendly! Our food got to our belly's within 20 minutes. Please go support Mexican owners in Richmond!

Yelp
Food was terrific. Parking is a challenge. Wait staff was super friendly and very helpful. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Good barbacoa best on this side of the Bay! Great hand made tortillas, decent service.

Yelp
El Chaparro has 1/2 of it's menu in Spanish which is a good sign this place is authentic. order inside. takeout only. no outside dining. offerings: tacos, quesadillas, tortas, burritos, breakfast, grilled meat by weight, sides, plates, drinks. eats: barbacoa, adobada tacos @3.00 -lime squeeze, cilantro, onions, red salsa came in separate plastic cups -barbacoa, adoboda(marinated pork) very fresh, tasty on house made flour tortillas. generous portions -tacos aren't sauced, so it's a natural taste. u add it. red salsa has a unique type of chili, has heat, not super hot. 4.5 stars. great value, fresh ingredients....

Yelp
Excellent spot for lamb barbacoa! Wife and I stopped in for the first time today and are sure glad we did. We split a half lb of barbacoa along with a side of consome, rice and beans, and a Gordita with chicharron. Everything was outstanding. Homemade tortillas and salsas were excellent as well. They also serve beer. Curious to try other things on the menu. Although could easily order the same thing again and again!

Yelp
Finally found a spot which is really good. Spanish rice is good and pork tamales really good!! Very authentic. Most of the menu is in Spanish. I will be retuning

Yelp
Ran into this place on accident but it was still worth it. Standard menu for so I went ahead and ordered an Al Pastor burrito to-go since I didn't want to get hit with rush hour. Was very surprised by the weight of the bag when I left. Turned out they gave me more than I had imagined. This thing was huge! (See photo) I actually had to pull over and eat some of it (don't burrito and drive, folks). They also include a bag of chips and some spicy chipotle salsa which was fire! Too much fire for me. Will be back for more!

Casey R.

Yelp
If you like salsa Verde and chili Quiles big plate and San Great!!! people. I haven't tried them yet but the chili rellenos look good too!!!

Yelp
Went there today for the first time . Not sure why this olacw has 4 stars. The food was ok . Tome is very plain or no flavor. But THE SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE! my son asked for his agua fresca which we already paid . Some guy with blue shirth maybe the owner or supervisor asked me 3 time if i paid for it to the point of almost acusing my son . All you have to do is check the order . So freaking rude . Never coming back again . Muy mal servicio este lugar

Lina S.

Yelp
The tacos they make with the homemade tortillas topped of with the red sauce are the chefs kiss ‍

Yelp
Everything was delicious! 3 of us spilt the 1/2 pound of lamb Barbacoa and a small consommé and it was the perfect amount of food. The lamb came perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful. The dish came with hot, tasty corn tortillas, 2 very different and flavorful sauces with fresh onions and cilantro to top off your self-made tacos. They also included fresh corn tortilla chips with another spicy salsa. It was fantastic. Fresh and flavorful. I would definitely recommend El Chaparro!

Yelp
If I could give this place 10 stars I would! I found this place on a fluke because I was driving around in El Cerrito. They didn't have any good options here on yelp, so I kept scrolling until I saw this place. LETS GO! I pulled up and was like hell yea, I want to eat here for sure! I went inside and the lady barely spoke English....I knew it was going to be good! So I ordered in Spanish because estoy una chingona! And waited for my food. I was a little confused as to why it was taking a little longer but who cares? You don't rush great things! I ordered 3 tacos pastor, 3 asada, and 1 platillo to go. I finally got my order and was like, ok...this bag has some weight on it! I got back to the hotel where my husband and kid were waiting. I started unpacking and thinking in my head these tacos are heavy af! Lol. Maaaaaan! Not only were they big and packed with meat...THEY WERE ALL ON HANDMADE TORTILLAS! OMG! SO BOMB SO DELICIOUS!!! THATS WHAT THE WAIT WAS FOR! I've never been to a place that gives you tortillas hecho a mano for the free! My platillo also came with 5 or 6 handmade tortillas and omg. And I was so happy that I could taste that they cooked the eggs with butter instead of oil. This place was a true delight. I'm from the bay, but live in SoCal....don't ever let anyone tell you the best Mexican/Latin food is down south. ITS DEFINITELY HERE IN THE BAY!

Maria R.

Yelp
I first tried this place when it was in the Richmond flea market! I ate there almost every weekend for 2 months straight. Their food tasted way better before. I tried them at their new restaurant two times before writing this review. Conclusion is that their barbacoa does not taste as fresh as it use to and their consome aswell.

Angel D.

Yelp
It's very good my friend The food taste like México And the horchata really good The workers are really good at there job

Megan M.

Yelp
I was looking for a local spot for barbacoa after a hike in nearby Alvarado Park. Came here and it's the real deal! Feels like a family run restaurant with food made with love. Expansive menu and the food was hearty and delicious. Highlights were barbacoa and pastor tacos and the consome was outstanding! They gave super generous portion of chopped onions, cilantro, and lime for the tacos. I ordered in Spanish with my limited language skills and the lady at the counter was very gracious. If you want to try a small local restaurant with delicious food made with care, El Chaparro should be on your list.

Alex P.

Yelp
El servicio muy mal y desconfiados terrible no se kien sea el dueño pero pepitos era muy mucho mejor

Karina G.

Yelp
Food was decent. But beware, the woman making the food was not wearing a mask properly. Not over her mouth or nose. There were kids running around without masks on. And even the cashier was not wearing her mask over her nose. It did not make me feel safe.

Norberto S.

Yelp
La barbacoa esta súper rica. Les recomiendo mucho este lugar. El sabor y el servicio siempre a sido muy bueno. Tienen una variedad de platillos como las quesabirrias y el menudo. Súper rico.

Latasha C.

Yelp
Everything is in Spanish only the lady at the counter didn't speak much English I wanted tamales on my way home stopped here I called beforehand and she said she still had tamales left so I came in and started ordering paid she then proceeded to go into the freezer and grab my tamales and put them in the microwave smh

Fernando F.

Yelp
I scheduled an order of 4 lbs of Barbacoa a week prior to a family gathering in Rodeo, Ca. The food was ready on time, fresh, amazing and authentic. They also gave us fresh home made corn tortillas. My money was well spent at this establishment. Will definitely try it again next time I am in the area.

Miguel C.

Yelp
The best Mexican food. The price is right, good service to customer. I bought 2 super burritos, huge amount of food. Try it!

Jamie Z.

Yelp
I love this place. This is my neighborhood go to and whenever I'm feeling down I come here for a large consome & carne. I also like their plate special as well as their sandwiches that come with fried flattened meats of your desire. There's always an older gentlemen their to greet me, hold the door for me & say goodbye to me every time I'm there so I know there is a great sense of pride in what they do. They also sell little snacks & desserts & have a large selection of beverages. Would definitely suggest giving this place a try. Call ahead.

Carlos C.

Yelp
Best place to come and have a really good consomé and barbacoa madre from lamb and the salsas are the best

A B.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this restaurant while driving. The sign gave me an indication that this might be a place that makes birria from goat. Evidently, they make barbacoa from lamb! I've never experienced lamb barbacoa, beef is usually what I find when dining in Mexican restaurants. I ordered two tacos. Upon opening my to go container, the first thing I noticed was that the tortillas were freshly made. This threw me off being that I'm used to the pre made tortillas the majority of taquerias use. The barbacoa was exquisite. Tender, juicy, very flavorful, well seasoned and slightly gamey. I will be coming back!!

Hector Vicente O.

Yelp
Great barbacoa, can't beat a pound of roasted lamb for $20 dollars, tacos are also huge at a decent price.
