The Best Mezcal Bars in Austin

"The team behind Red Headed Stepchild and Mama Dearest applied their adult humor touches to this downtown bar focused on tequila and mezcal. See: the huge neon sign boasting of the “world’s greatest cock.” That same wit extends to the playfully named drinks, such as the the cold-brew-and-mezcal drink made with Ojo de Tigre, or the Mezcalada. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Clara Wang

12 Great New Bars in Austin: Where To Drink Right Now

"Joining the quickly growing scene of Downtown rooftop bars, El Cockfight is from the team behind the Downtown speakeasy, Red Headed Stepchild and East Austin bar, Mama Dearest. Much like their other concepts, novelty and shock value play a little role in the themes here, so don’t be surprised to walk by a large neon sign flashing the words “World’s greatest c*ck” while you sip on drinks like the cold brew-and-mezcal “Whorechata” or the “Pinche Gringo” made with sotol and midori. Despite all that, El Cockfight makes a pretty solid margarita, and the view (and breeze) from the second story are hard to beat on a warm Austin evening.  " - nicolai mccrary

My friends and I were initially greeted by Mike, honestly made us feel right at home as we were visiting from Dallas. We went upstairs with Kyle who graciously let me charge my phone and provided amazing hospitality. Great view, lovely atmosphere and a cool seesaw too!

If you’re in Austin and looking for an unforgettable bar experience, The Cockfight is an absolute must-visit. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was electric—warm lighting, great music, and a vibe that perfectly captures the spirit of the city. But the real highlight of the night? Trey, the bartender. This guy is next-level when it comes to hospitality. He’s not just slinging drinks—he’s crafting them with precision, personality, and a genuine passion for the craft. Every cocktail he made was spot-on, perfectly balanced, and clearly made with skill. Beyond his mixology talents, Trey was incredibly personable, making us feel like regulars from the jump. He had fantastic local recommendations, from hidden gem restaurants to can’t-miss live music spots, making our Austin experience even better. It’s rare to find a bartender who nails both the drinks and the hospitality, but Trey does it effortlessly. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, The Cockfight is worth a stop, and Trey is the one to look for behind the bar. We’ll definitely be back!

I visited from out of state and absolutely loved the vibe at El Cockfight. The low lighting and unique decorations give the place a really cool, intimate feel. I tried the Pointy Boots cocktail, and it was delicious—definitely recommend it. The rooftop bar is a whole vibe too, perfect for a chill night out. I’d love to come back next time I’m in town!

Google
Great bar with a rooftop atmosphere and several levels and spots to drink on. It's a wonderful place to spend the evening if the weather is beautiful. They have live music and a great view of the city.

Google
In town for the weekend, and was recommended this spot by a local. I wasn't sure what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised. We hung out at the rooftop bar where the bartender Trey took wonderful care of us, very attentive service! Our small group tried a handful of different drinks, and all of them were damn good. Any time I find myself back in Austin, I will be returning here without a doubt!

Google
Awesome drinks with funny names like the “whorechata” 🤣 I also loved the chill rooftop patio! Perfect for a chill night and yapping away.

Google
Use to come here a lot. I would always avoid the pony tail Afro guy downstairs because he’s always rude but nonetheless I loved everyone else. Saturday I brought some friends and we wanted to sit inside, so we had Afro guy. Asked about an old bartender, and he acted like I was stupid. But like I said he never fails to be rude any other time I’ve been in either. Super dismissive and unwelcoming. After serving us he basically told us to go upstairs. My friends felt like he didn’t want us at the bar downstairs so we went to the patio. Not sure why he charged me 35$ for two frozen margaritas but it wasn’t worth the argument with him. Just wish I took my business elsewhere. I loved this bar but oh well

Google
Go here to start your night. They upgraded the roof top and have awesome customer service, Drew (if I'm spelling it correctly) absolutely delivered to our party. I've taken friends and family here numerous times - great place! Speakeasy next door if you manage to land the passcode :)

Yelp
This place is great! It is multi level which is a great feature and their rooftop has a great view and good vibes. The staff was very friendly and our drinks were great.

Yelp
Hmmm maybe I have the (un)luck of the draw but every time I've come back to give El Cockfight another shot it just never lands right. The staff is either super inattentive, service is a mess, or there's a genuine disconnect between the concept and what they want to be. Staff never seems to be quite happy or is annoyed when you request drinks or items. Drinks have been served messy or there's no desire to clean them up. I think if they were to decide if they were a dive bar or an upscale cocktail spot. They have a rooftop bar which is super nice but seating is a bit of hunger games when trying to find a table. All in all if I end up here it's ok but if not then that's a-ok too.

Yelp
Tasty drinks and great live music on a cute rooftop with a view of the bats just after sunset! The indoor area had multiple cute sections as well. The bartender was super friendly and put the padres game on for us when we mentioned we were from San Diego. Will definitely be back for the music and margaritas on our next visit.

Yelp
Love place for pre or after dinner drinks! Their margarita is usually pretty good and the whorchata is divine. Upstairs has a rooftop view of downtown and cornhole. Cool decor inside downstairs and lots of seating. Fun when they have a DJ

Yelp
3.5 Bartender on rooftop really made our time here. He gave us info on bars to try, including speakeasies. The rooftop area is a bit more inviting than inside. There's fans that blow mist to cool you down. Also areas covered with umbrellas. The chairs & tables definitely need to be upgraded/ changed. I was worried about getting a splinter. The Frida drink on draft was nice & refreshing. They had two types of beers that were my taste. I tried the lighter one since we were outside in the heat (bartender's recommendation). Restroom was decent. Good experience other than the hard/ uncomfy seats.

Angela B.

Yelp
Vape machine was broken and the staff was incredibly hard to even get a drink from. They ignored my partner and I and then made it a big joke. Worst place we went to in Austin, which was sad because the venue was beautiful.

Yelp
Anthony is an absolute powerhouse behind the bar at Moon Light! Whether he's barbacking or stepping up as a bartender, he's always hustling and making sure everything runs smoothly. Need a drink in the middle of a rush? Anthony's got it covered with speed and precision. His attention to detail is incredible, and he never misses a beat--even when it's packed. On top of that, he's super friendly and approachable, always taking a moment to check in and make sure you're having a great time. Moon Light is lucky to have someone like Anthony on the team!

Yelp
Great vibe! We enjoyed some drinks on the rooftop. Great decor, great views. Music was also really good. Drinks are a good price. Will definitely be back when visiting Austin again!
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
This place was such a vibe! Definitely recommend! They have a great location and their rooftop is very neat! Staff were all very friendly, their prices are very reasonable (considering they are in downtown Austin) and their drinks are very good...and strong :) My only wish is that they had more drink options.

Yelp
Nice rooftop dive downtown. Some great neon. The bar is nice and dark. The rooftop area is refreshingly cool.

Anna C.

Yelp
Had some great margaritas on the rooftop! Nice staff and well decorated! I was tickled by the silly name.

Yelp
I came here two nights ago for a last minute get together with friends. I was greeted immediately by a lovely person at the downstairs bar, and I ordered the drink El Pito. It was delightful. As I looked around, I was taken aback by the changes made to the bar from the last time I was there. There was a Virgin Mary LED and various other cool design choices. I made my way upstairs where I finally met with friends at the picnic table filled rooftop. There was a second bar where you could order most everything else. There were also great spaces throughout the bar with fantastic aesthetic, perfect for photography and modeling.

Yelp
Terrible service. The bartender with the Afro is incredibly lazy and slow. Probably a bad day for him. Nate was great tho! His amazing service made up for the terrible bartender

Yelp
I've been here twice for drinks with friends and love it! On the weekends they have a dope DJ playing everything from Latin music to r&b to early Y2K pop. I've tried like 3 drinks there all pretty good. Margarita wasn't my favorite which is funny seeing as how it is a Mexican bar. They have a ton of cocktails and beer and even cocktails on draft! Decor and aesthetic is bomb- love the neon lights and hodge lodge decor. Shout out to the bartender Stacy- he is attentive and nice and watches out for his female patrons. We love a bar where we feel protected. Whole other bar on the roof which is dope! This is a new favorite!

Yelp
El Cockfight has entered the downtown bar scene, and is a top contender! The drinks here are not only tasty, but tastefully strong. The menu offerings are solid and literally everything I ordered had me wanting to try out more! El Cockfight's decor has me feeling like I just walked on set of a tv show bar in Mexico. You'll be welcomed by the "World's Greatest Cock" sign, booths with tables, a countertop bar, and for those wanting to explore more, you'll find a backroom for private parties, and a rooftop bar.

Yelp
Decent happy hour drinks, but irritating about the fact I'm expected to tip more than 20% on my tab to get the code to go to the "speak easy" next door - which I didn't know until after I read reviews online to find out why when I asked the bartender for the code after cashing out he said "take care of me I'll take care of you." Not sure why that means I need to tip $3 on a $6 bill? The speakeasy - "red headed stepchild" doesn't have good reviews itself, but I wanted to go to check it out anyways since I was in the city. Good vibe if you come with a group - not alone though. So, don't recommend for solo travelers.

John J.

Yelp
The entire premise is nothing short of what in Spanish we call "naco" aka trashy. If that was the intended atmosphere I could understand if it was done right. Instead we get the most generic agave spirit selection with a rotating cast of bartenders that do their best. This review isn't about a single service aspect but instead on the entire premise of the bar. It literally feels like you chose to be a caricature stereotype. So much money spent on neon and paint only to leave me thinking... wtf.. or... Que mamadas...

Yelp
They have a great margarita! Drinks were good and bartenders were great. The upstairs loft is cool. There are a lot of little lounge areas along the stairs.

Greer G.

Yelp
Love this bar immaculate vibes every time Love the cocktails and the music is always great brought friends from out of town. To give them a taste of austin great roof top views

Yelp
One of my favorite things to do is trying new bars and restaurants and yesterday the weather was great to try out a new rooftop. I had a few No Mames and they were really strong and tasty. Service was great and I enjoyed the ambience. It was perfect start of a great night.

Matthew S.

Yelp
Charged me a random $20 separately from my tab when I left a cash tip and they don't have a public contact number. EDIT: Manager and owner contacted me and solved the issue quickly

Yelp
This might be the best agave bar downtown. The drinks were amazing. Stacey is the realest bartender and made the best recommendations . He was so accommodating and listened to what we wanted. He made us feel so welcome and cared for our safety the entire night. Also $6 margs for happy hour! Can't beat that. 10/10 would recommend this spot for any night out.

Nicole K.

Yelp
Mike was our bartender and he was so good!! Delish drinks and the vibe was amazing! Will be back!!

Yelp
There's one bartender there who really puts the COCK in El Cockfight. Mike was chill though

Yelp
This place is awesome ! We really missed the old place handlebar but this is way better ! Delicious drinks & great decor . Rooftop is the best ! Can't wait to come back !
google avatar

Rocio R.

Yelp
Service and cocktails are amazing!! I definitely recommend this place ! You have to try their margaritas and horchata martinis ! One of the best in the area

Joe D.

Yelp
Came in with the wife, sat down, no service. 4 women walk in and get helped instantly. Totals bros at the bar. It's been 15 minutes and they just look right through us.

Max S.

Yelp
The bartender was extremely rude (Not mike). He treated me horribly and made fun of my friend (sober for 3 years) for not drinking. We have been loyal customers to both Floppy Disk and El Cockfight, we've brought multiple groups of friends here and will never return. Sick to my stomach about this experience.

Katie M.

Yelp
Don't get the frozen margarita. My boyfriend and I each had one and were vomiting an hour later.
google avatar

Roger S.

Yelp
Great service! Great drinks! Great atmosphere! Keep up the great work ya'll!! I stopped in for a drink and ordered the House Margarita... nothing store bought here! Excellent remarks!!

Sheridan W.

Yelp
Great new establishment in downtown Austin! Centered around Mexican tequila and mezcal, each drinks has its own twist on the classics. I got their signature El Margarita and had great flavor. They've got friendly staff willing to answer questions you may have or show off the bar! Will come back.

Yuliana M R.

Yelp
In the mood for a drinky pooh and get a lot of cute photos with your friends... this is your place!
google avatar

Shane T.

Yelp
They make a drink that they give you a little candy bar with, avoid that drink, it's horrible. The paloma is certainly not a Paloma as well, it's more like a tequila and water. Other than that the rooftop is chill, wasn't too busy on Saturday night so it was a good spot to chill on the railing over the street.

Erin G.

Yelp
Miss the old Handlebar, but this is a great replacement and improvement to the building. Awesome atmosphere and tasty tequila drinks.

Nikolas M.

Yelp
they stole $50 from me charged my car without me beinf there after I left because the drink they made was a$$ ..... shity bartneders and shitty staff would never recommend unless youre trying to get F*******
