Chicago’s best ceviche and aguachile | Eater Chicago

"Hidden in a strip mall close to O’Hare International Airport, the small beachy oasis of a storefront offers a shortcut to the Mexican Pacific seashore through an array of ceviches that features fish, shrimp, octopus, and a mix of these in different permutations. With its street-food focus, the eatery features plates that range from ceviche tostadas, cevicharrón (ceviche served on the popular fried wheat flour snack that is commonly found street side in Mexico), and for the carb-conscious, pepilocos- a portion of ceviche over sliced cucumbers. Orders arrive with a selection of bottled salsas. Takeout trays for larger groups are also available. And for those who cannot eat raw shellfish, there is also a cooked option. The sibling owners incorporate their favorite family recipes, like their popular spicy aguachile marinade, made in-house with serrano chilis." - Brenda Storch

This weekends new to us restaurant was El Coco Loco Mexican Grill in West Chicago . I had chicken enchiladas with mole. This was some of the best mole sauce I've ever had. Seriously it was so good. Tim had carne asada and it fell apart. You barely had to chew it. George had a steak burrito which he said was very good and Dawn has fish tacos which she also said were really good. The queso fundido was pretty great as well. That mole though. I will definitely go back for that. #newtousrestaurant #timilyeats

Google
Staff was very friendly and the ambience was wonderful. Most of there food is amazing, though the steak burrito i had was missing a bit on the flavor. My favorite of there's are the El pastor tacos with pineapple which are super delicious. Also the red sauce they serve with chips is crazy good. Definitely will go back.

Google
My FAVORITE Mexican joint. The staff is wonderfully nice and they always make me fajitas with the asado taco meat. They also have the best hot salsa and guacamole.

We came in over the weekend. It was very busy due to a community event, and it took a long time for our food to come. When it finally did, we all enjoyed it very much. The waitress was very apologetic about the service, which we understood. The food was authentic and the portions were decent. I had two tacos with a side of rice, which was under $10. We will definitely come back if we are in the area.

Google
Nice ambience. Personally I don't like their complimentary chips, they were very poor in taste. In addition, we ordered tacos which were the worst tacos I ever had, it smells bad.

Google
We always have a great time at Coco Loco! The staff is always friendly and the food is always delicious. Their blue shark margarita is my favorite drink and everything we’ve ever tried has all been amazing. The molcajete, pozole, cecina tacos, and the sope estilo DF are a few of our favorites.

Daniela Valdez

Google
Great food! Their customer service has drastically improved these last couple of years.

Yelp
We are regulars here! Our favorites are enchiladas de mole and the molcajetes! Good authentic food and always great service with a smile.

Yelp
If you are looking for a truly authentic mexican food, this is your place! Everything is fresh and made just how your abuela would. The service is fast and accurate to what you order. Our waitress, Maria, was kind and made sure we got what we wanted. El Coco Loco has the feel as soon as you walk that gives you the same warm feel you get when you go home. Between the colors and the decor, this place welcomes you with open arms. Be sure to check this place out!

Yelp
I'm a big foodie and this is my boyfriend and I's favorite Mexican place around. The staff is great and they have the best guacomole and hot salsa ive ever had.

Yelp
The service was terrible. Server forgot to get is the salsa and limes. We waited for at least 10 min, told the manager and he also forgot. Asked the someone else and she also forgot. By the time we got the salsa and limes, our tacos were cold. Not sure if we will be back.

Yelp
I'm done. First time I ordered there the ' Special ' was taco dinner $7.99. I ordered 3 dinners, the man at the pick up counter put the thru at about $42, I said " supposed to be 7.99 each" The man who I think was the owner said "oh I forgot that it was the special that night". He refused to give me credit on my credit card, refused to give me the cash difference out of his drawer or any form of credit for next time. I let It go...ordered take out 3 more times over the next few months, always had pleasant service from the waitresses who take the orders over the phone or at the counter for takeout. Ordered again tonight over the phone, got the same man, his English is very poor, after trying for 5 minutes to get my order correct I asked if he could please put one of the waitresses on the phone so I can get the order correctly... " No, I do it" he ended up yelling at me, I was simply trying to order four dinners of the same thing, chicken enchiladas. I'm done with El Coco loco. It's a shame, the food is usually pretty good. But I refuse to be yelled at and take an advantage of.

Yelp
We were in the area for my daughter's sports game and we love Mexican food, so we came here. I actually had picked out a different place a little ways away and my husband and daughter thought it looked sketchy so we left and came to El Coco Loco. From the signage, it looks like this place is under new ownership or perhaps reopened after a remodel? I'm not sure. It was pretty busy as it was half price margarita night. However, we were seated pretty quickly. The staff were super nice and attentive to our needs. I splurged and ordered the molcajete supremo at the suggestion of our server. It is a must if you go here! There was so much food that I took half home. My daughter ordered the taco salad, which was fresh and had a hearty serving of ground beef. My husband had the chimichanga and he said it was delicious. While this place is quite a drive for us, I'm thinking it will be worth the drive on occasion.

Yelp
Been eating here (primarily for lunch) since they opened - always have thoroughly enjoyed. I don't typically order a dinner and usually stick to ordering a La carte individual items (taco / sope / tostado) This time went with a full order of tostada de Pulpo - they are delicious ! If you want truly authentic Mexican food - this is where Mexican families come to dine & celebrate

Yelp
Food was good. Chips and salsa were good with the optio. Of a mild sweet salsa and a hotter salsa. Ordered the combo fajitas. Was shocked to see they left the tails on the shrimp, though. Also, no garnish or cheese was given for the fajitas. No lettuce, cheese or tomatos. :( The restaurant was busy but the service was very slow.

Yelp
This was the second time catering food for my company picnic and all I can say is OUTSTANDING. I worked with Daniel and he always makes it so easy. We ordered steak, chicken, and beef tacos and every one of them were so good, and that homemade guacamole was amazing! The preparation made serving very easy too. We added desserts this time and I got so many compliments on how good it was made. I'm not a big dessert person but I will get that again. Thank you for being our taco go-to!

Yelp
The food is fine. I appreciate that they offer a lot of authentic Mexican food options, which also serving your standard Tex Mex. I got the chicken chimichanga, it's filled with cheese and chicken and has sour cream and salsa. I asked for no cheese or sour cream (though there was still cheese inside). The chicken was soggy and didn't have much flavor. They also put a TON of salsa on the chimichanga which also made it soggy. And it wasn't spicy or flavorful. It was more on the sweet side. The rice and beans that it came with were good. I ordered a side of small guac, which was the size of a to-go ketchup container. Very small. And it came out with the food, even though I wanted it with the chips. Which of course I had finished by the time the food came out. If you want more chips, it's like $1 or 2 extra. The agua de jamaica is good. I recommend that getting that to drink. Service was not good. We waited about 30 min for the check and even before we were ready to go, we were not brought water refills or anything. We ended up going to the front for our check and to pay. It's not great and I wouldn't come back, but if you don't mind mediocre food and bad service, then it'll be fine.

Yelp
This was my second time here with my fiancé. First time was not a pleasant one and this time around having to experience yet again another unpleasant visit I felt the need to share my thoughts. When we were seated at our table it was 7:08pm. After 5 minutes have passed I started to look around to see if anyone was coming our way. I saw several waitresses attending to other tables yet no one had came to us. I noticed a table of 2 that had came after us yet they were being attended before us. Their chips & salsa had been already brought out, along with their drinks. I kept looking around still no one noticed us? I saw the owner going from table to table checking if everything was ok, I could hear because he was close to our table yet failed to check up on us. Finally, it was 7:21pm (13mins that had passed) and no one ever came to our table. I decided to grab a waitress's attention. if I hadn't, who knows how much longer it would've been before they came to our table. I could go on and on but honestly, theirs no need. Rest assured we will not be coming back.

Yelp
Please! Do not go to this place, the owner Irma is such an itch!!! I called to place an order for the 1st time I'm sorry but people like her should not own a restaurant or serve people! She was soooo rude just trying to place she was going to charge me extra because I asked for the toppings for the tacos on the side! She kept saying I'm waiting for you! she would not let me speak to place my order! I placed the order finally and when my dad went to pick it up that witch purposely didn't but the order in. (It was the steak tacos) Don't go there unless you like to be treated like sh_t! Go to Gorditas Liselena around the corner, El machete, Burrito Parrilla , El jefe, uncle Julio's or la Chiquita any where else BUT here! Why Irma, why do you treat your customers like that you don't deserve to have this restaurant!!!!?? All you could have said is I don't want to sell to you !!! Irma learn how to treat your people with respect! Irma I know you are the owner and you are very BAD person!

Yelp
Been here several times and have always had subpar service however tonight takes the cake. Our server has 2 tables and yet is no where to be found. When she did come back she took my wife's order and started to walk away, Hello I wanted to order as well. And watching the bartender on her phone and pour margaritas from a jug is the cherry on top. It's not hard to male a margarita from scratch. And for the record there were 2 other servers that were giving their tables amazing service, just not our server

Lupita C.

Yelp
If I could give this 0 stars I would. I tried giving this place a few chances. Anyways, First of all they have a lady waiter who works here and we ordered margaritas and somehow her fake nails ended up in our margaritas. The owner (guy) apologized after he was rude the whole time we were there (party of 8) Today we came in and I'm putting my hair back and the owner old man came to me and said "oh you shouldn't be touching your hair because then that can get in your food and then you're going to say it's us." I looked at him with a face of disbelief I looked at him and said nothing. At that moment I wanted to leave because they don't deserve my business, but I had my family here and they had ordered already. He then came back and said to my sister because my sister had a water bottle which he didn't let he bring in, understandable, but to come back and tell her "this isn't your house this is a restaurant" made absolutely no sense. She threw out the water bottle and had said absolutely nothing to him and for him to come back and make his rude comments was unacceptable. He is unprofessional and he wasn't giving us food free food, we're paying customers. Like I said, if it was just me and my partner we would've left but our family was here and the were looking forward to eat so I didn't want to make it more awkward than it already was. I will definitely be contacting the health department with pictures that I have from the margaritas and the nails the waitress had. Took a picture of her hand to prove it was her. On the other hand a business is a business, you have paying customers come and eat and pay for food so keep it that way. If you don't know how to communicate properly with customers or you just don't have that patience stay your grumpy self home. Funny thing was he never went up to anyone else to say anything but me and what he said to my sister. I smell personal problem there when I don't even know him personally other than seeing him in restaurant. I will never be coming back! And definitely letting all family and friends know not to come back here.

Alex C.

Yelp
The food was ok but the waiters rarely came by to check on us. Didn't remove the plates from our table, and the meat from my tacos were dry. I do recommend the piña colada tho, that was pretty good.

Yelp
Not sure what people expect. We have had some miss nights here. Slow service. Food a little average. But. And huge but. (Because I like big buts and I can't lie). Consistently the food is great! Taco night on Thursdays is a steal. Their golden margaritas leave nothing to be desired. It's a local, family owned shop. They do their best. Some nights they are slammed. But (there I go again) I think of that service as relaxed and family. Not slow. So know you may not get fast food, but it's not fast food. Sit and enjoy. Be together with your dining party. If you need a quick taco go to Taco Bell... on the other hand the Taco Bell on 59 frequently takes 15 minutes in the drive through. You decide which is worse.

Larry T.

Yelp
We had a 5 top for dinner. They brought one tiny bowl of mild and the same size spicy. One small bowl of chips for 5 people. We wanted another bowl of chips and they wanted 1.50 for additional. This is néw and we will never be back. Maybe it's because we are gringo.
google avatar

Jeff N.

Yelp
It was convenient. We were attending the giant piñata event right outside. Edible and reasonable cost. If you like Pepe's then you like this place.

Joseph P.

Yelp
Had lunch for the first time at this restaurant. Great food - good service - nice atmosphere - we will be back.

Tina H.

Yelp
No stars. Was there with several women from work. Waitress very non attentive. Had to ask 3 times for silver ware. Rarely came to see how we were. Had to get her attention the entire evening to get drinks and refills. Then after barely being there for no longer than 90 minutes was asked to leave because they had a line waiting even though there were at least four empty tables near us. We told them we hadn't even gotten the check. When this man brought us the check there was automatically tagged on a 18% gratuity. So there is a sign that says to pay your server so we waited and she never shows up. This man and a few others begin talking about us in Spanish and little did he know one of my coworkers is Hispanic and was horrified at what he was saying...saying that we did not want to pay. Long story short...Dave your time and money. In my 62 years I have never been treated so rudely.

Billy P.

Yelp
Had a very, very simple take out order for 3. Drove 30 minutes round trip to pick up only to discover that a burrito was missing. Drove back to get it... Their idea of an apology for their mistake was to give us a 2oz of guacamole... 2oz.... Absolutely joke of a business with zero care about their customers. Will never be ordering from here again. For the record 2oz is about 2 chip fulls of guac... I'll just go ** myself

Yelp
I was thoroughly impressed with El CoCo LoCo. And if you read my reviews, you will see I'm a bit of a Mexican Food geek who dines on such globally. I can safely say this place is the best Mod West Mexican restaurant I have been too. Better than anything I have had in Oregon and Washington, The dish that blows my mind is the spicy fish stew, Very complex, deep flavor, Amazing, I forget its Spanish name. I will update when I find my notes, Will post a pic later too. Bravo - great stuff!

Yelp
Excellent food. I love Taco Thursday, and sitting outdoors in the summer. Good friendly people and also great for take out. Their Mexican food is the real deal
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
Spare yourself and find any other Mexican restaurant besides this one. Horrible service ( it was not even busy) and the nachos were horrible, soggy and the beans were canned beans. Come on!
google avatar

Raul V.

Yelp
Just moved into West Chicago and this is the first place we tried and so glad we did the service was quick and the staff was very attentive I ordered a traditional Mexican. Plate la tampiqueña and let me tell you it was so good I also had a michelada which was so bomb definitely returning here
google avatar

Yelp
I moved here from TX 29 yrs ago and I have been searching for someplace that the Mexican food was as good as what I had in TX. I found this gem because of a detour in downtown West Chicago and put it on my radar. This past Saturday night my wife and I tried it out and this was as close as close can be to what I have been looking for! To start with, the chips and salsa was so good! The mild was the best I have had as it had a nice sweet flavor to it! I ordered steak fajitas that was great and the quantity was well worth the price, and my wife ordered a chicken tamale and wings! The tamale was the best she has had in a very long time unlike most places we try! We also split a Flan that was just as great as well; however, next time, we will ordered it without the chocolate sauce. Our waitress was fantastic as well and it was really pleasant dinner experience! I was hoping for a good chili con queso, but they had a great Queso Fundido that was great instead. They also prefer cash, however, they did accept our credit card. We will use cash the next time we go!

Yelp
We have been coming to El Coco Loco for over 7 years. We always enjoyed eating at their outdoor patio. Their food was always delicious and plentiful. Their waitstaff has always been a hit or miss, but we came back for the food. This past weekend my husband and I decided to take my mother for an early lunch. We were looking forward to a nice meal. We have not been here since 2020 due to Covid. Fast forward to 2022 and all I can say is this place is nothing like I remembered. Food is now being served on cheap plastic plates. Portions have gotten much smaller and the food tasted old. We ordered a combo appetizer platter and it was not enough to serve 3 people. One quesadilla that the cheese was not even melted. The flauta had a very stale taste and very greasy. As if they were sitting around and were reheated in the microwave. As for the guacamole and pico de gallo there was only about a tablespoon of each. The nachos consisted of 4 chips with a sprinkle of cheese. The only saving grace was the tamale. In the past this appetizer order had 4 times the amount of food. It came to the table hot, fresh and absolutely delicious. When we asked for more chips we were told that there would be an extra charge. At this point we were disgusted and decided to not order any entrees. Our bill was over $30.00 dollars including tip for 1 Mexican coke, 2 horchatas, 1 combo appetizer platter, and lets not forget the extra charge for chips. Like the old saying goes nothing stays the same. All I can say is we had a nice run and it's time to move on.

Yelp
Disappointed with my last visit, the owner had a cup fall on the ground, she picked it up then filled it up and gave to a customer after being on dirty floor. I'm very disappointed after seeing this and not sure if I will continue to keep going, they still have the Best servers ! Owners are terrible

Lydia T.

Yelp
Always try to be in town on Thursday when I'm visiting to go to el coco loco. Last night was so disappointing. They are charging for chips refills. REALLY!!!! I'm looking for a new option now.
google avatar

Martha V.

Yelp
Horrible service. My coworker was accused of swearing at a worker over the phone, so when she went to pick up the order management got in her face and she was completely baffled by their accusation. Mind you, we placed the order on speaker in front of our other coworkers(witnesses that it didn't happen). We also got sick from the chorizo tacos. Please don't waste your time here
google avatar

Dee P.

Yelp
The $1.50 tacos were really tasty. We ordered the shredded beef, ground beef, steak, pork, and chicken tacos Mexican style. And because it was Thursday they were a bargain price. That's where the positive comments end. The service was horrible. We had no napkins. Has to get them from another table. Our server sat at the bar and ate her own dinner while we waited to place our order. The margarita was made with that terrible mix. Pretty sure a fresh lime was no part of the recipe. And the cheese dip! Oh. My. Goodness. It was awful. So fake and processed. Really bad. We won't be going back.
google avatar

Marie P.

Yelp
Food is ok, but the service is horrible. I've had several disappointing encounters at this restaurant. Their table side manners are terrible and placing a to-go order is always risky. It will either be incomplete or incorrect. When you address it to them, they blame you or act like it's an inconvenience...to them. The young man that supervises the place is really unfriendly and seems annoyed by everyone. I've been a patron of their other restaurants for years, but our last experience sealed the deal for us. We won't return. Save yourself the trouble and go anywhere else in West Chicago for Mexican food. This place will disappoint you.
google avatar

Taylor E.

Yelp
The pork and dessert tamales were incredible. The staff is so nice & made ordering and pick up easy. We are so excited to share the tamales with friends & family!! Can't wait to try more and hopefully dine-in after covid.

Colin E.

Yelp
Amazing. don't over think. we got the dollar tacos which smack every time. half priced margs are juiced up. It is insane. would come here for a quick deathbed meal
google avatar

Gina V.

Yelp
The Flautas are very delicious. Caldo de red y el Menudo is one of my favorite soups at coco loco and you can not for get the piña coladas served in a fresh pineapple containers. El coco loco is the perfect restaurant if you in a lazy mood and don't want to cook at home. The tacos are pretty good. This an American-Mexican restaurant some of the servers lack personality and never smile they are way too serious and sometimes have an attitude when you ask them for refills. Over all it would be perfect

Alexandra C.

Yelp
The service here is horrible! I came here with family and i had ordered a smoothie with tapioca and the tapioca was frozen not boiled. Our waitress had first messed up our drinks and was just so rude with such an ugly attitude. We would order things from her and she would take a long time to give it to us and they weren't even busy.

Angel G.

Yelp
I ordered a torta de milanesa de pollo and received a milanesa de rez. I ordered it through the phone and the big guy with glasses told me I was wrong and that I ordered what I received. He was very angry and rude when I told him. He got even more annoyed because he had to offer me the correct food. I saw him roll his eyes when he took my food back. That dude is very unprofessional for someone who's in charge. I'm only writing this review because it's happened multiple times to me and my family and it's always that same guy.

Briana B.

Yelp
I ordered two margaritas and the man who helped also gave me free tacos and salsa to welcoming me to the neighborhood! Great food and wonderful people! We can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Lori K.

Yelp
We just went to Coco loco if Tuesday and it was fabulous! Did was absolutely amazing.

Yelp
Tasteless! What happened here? Used to be pretty good.. The menu's are filthy... We're done..
google avatar

Sandy Skelnik B.

Yelp
Love this place they have the best salsa and chips. My favorite entrees are the cheese poblano peppers . I love sitting out during the nice weather on the patio its decorated real cute with flowers and lights. A hidden gem.

Alice E.

Yelp
Complimentary OK chips with red (sweet) and green (spicy) salsas. I had the pastor crisp taco platter and my SO had the steak soft taco version. The flavors were OK, but nothing on our plates was hot. The beans were slightly warm but everything else was just above room temperature. Despite having more than adequate staff with less than a dozen customers there, the service was lackadaisical and unenthusiastic, not a single smile. I had to get up from the table to request our bill and again to give the waiter the bill and payment. Both times the waiter was leaning against a counter with his back toward the customers and chatting with other staff. All in all, a depressing experience that I'm unlikely to repeat with other options within a block.

Yelp
One word=Disgusting! Two words=Stay Away! Three words=Avoid this place! On 03 Oct for National Taco Day, the wife and I came here with our 2 year old daughter. My wife was craving a margarita and this was a place we've been looking forward to trying. When we got to the restaurant at 6:25 we were seated. At 6:30 our waitress came to the table to introduce herself and bring menus. At 7pm (30mins later) she came back to bring us two glasses of water. We then took the initiative to place our order at that time. After all we had looked at the menu for 30 mins already. We ordered Tacos and margaritas. We wanted Margaritas on the rocks. Unfortunately, the waitress told us that they do not make margaritas on the rocks. According to her, they only have frozen margaritas. 30 mins later at 7:30 the margaritas finally arrived. My margarita tasted like S***. It tasted like the bartender over poured one too many shots of cheap alcohol in it. My wife's margarita had the opposite problem. Her margarita did not have ANY, ZERO, NADA alcohol. 15 mins later when the tacos arrived at 7:45 (yes, tacos regular tacos, nothing special. 1 hr 20mins after we arrived) we informed the waitress that her margarita did not have any alcohol. She said, it does I know it does. She got defensive. I asked her to taste the drink. She then grabbed the margarita and almost tasted the margarita. She then realized that she was about to take a sip, and put the drink down on a wrinkled napkin that we had used (see pic). She then said, I can tell the "guy" to put another shot in there. So yep, customer service and profesionalismo is def not their strong point. Lastly, if things couldn't get worse, when we finally received our tacos, they were cold. At least the waitress apologize for bringing the tacos late. Honestly, I would NOT recommend this place to NO ONE not even my worst enemy. TACO BELL, is a far better choice for "mexican" and I never eat Taco Bell. Another option is to walk to the taquerias nearby.
google avatar

Nina J.

Yelp
Best Mexican place and most nice people ever. I love the food and perfect amount too. Thanks for always helping me out. Also love the drinks special
google avatar

Lori R.

Yelp
Awesome nachos, enchiladas and grilled plate. Delicious margaritas that pack a punch and great service!

Reina G.

Yelp
I ordered a margarita, and it barley had any tequila; I could taste just a hint of it. It was literally a mango smoothie. The food was mediocre- not very flavorful. Also, the atmosphere is not the best (no music). I would definitely not come back.
google avatar

Jodi J.

Yelp
What a find! We have lived in the neighborhood for a long time and never tried this gem of a place! The service was great! The menu is extensive and well priced. The food was fresh and delicious! We and our friends will be back!

Yelp
I wanted to give this place 5 stars, I now want to give it 1 star but it will get the two stars since the tacos were amazing, but thats where the "good" stops. 1.) We got there, their was a hawks game going on in so the bar was loud, we asked to sit in the dining area they said no.. it was being cleaned at 8:45 PM and half the tables were still full. 2.) The bar area was extremely loud. I know you have a bar but you are not a bar, if you dont let customers sit in the restaurant then dont keep the bar stupidly loud 3.) Remember you only get one bucket of chips free. 4.) We went on $1.00 taco night, which is now $1.5 which I totally understand but here is the kick.. 6 meat tacos are 1.5 but if you get a meat taco without meat its 2.75 (regular price) which doesnt make sense but I guess their place their rules!!, I wish the waiter told us when we ordered the taco special, finally flagged down the owner when the bill came he let me know that the veggie tacos are not on special and he agrees the waiter should have told me , didnt offer to make it right or anything just a "well he should have told you that it wasnt on sale" 5.) Margeritas. So today is margarita special 1/2 off, so they are still 5.50 a marg, well if your margs are $11.00 full price they should be fresh, these tasted like concentrate and bad tequila, atleast the on the rocks ones had a taste, my wife and my frozen ones had bad liqour taste which you could barely taste. 6.) I can forgive certain things, but the lack of service especially from the owner is absolutely crap. We live in west chicago there are way to many places that care about customers, I would rather pay a little more to enjoy and support a person that knows how to treat customers.

Yelp
The staff is really nice and helpful. I had the Tacos: tripas, lengua, pastor and campechanos. I would really recommend the Tripa and Lengua. They aren't chewy like other places. They are crispy and soft. I recommend coming here for authentic tacos.
