El Colmado Review - Lower East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"If you live on the Lower East Side, you’re probably always on the lookout for spots where you can get a relatively cheap (under $10) lunch. Dominican grocery store El Colmado on Houston should be on your radar. You can stop by to pick up cans of Campbell soup, eggs, and any flavor of Gatorade—but the Dominican buffet is the real draw. Their menu changes daily, but you’ll pretty much always be able to find chicharrón, roasted pork, and rotisserie chicken that you can add to bowls of mangu, yellow rice, and sweet plantains. Even the most packed containers of fall-apart pork shoulder, stewed red beans, and rice won’t run you more than $10. Make sure to ask for some tangy green sauce to go with any of the meat, as the zippiness readily cuts through all of the fat and balances everything out. There are a ton of Dominican and Latin American places around the LES, like Cibao, Dominican Cravings in Essex Market, and Sandy’s Coffee Shop, but we should all be grateful to have another option. The portions are so generous that you could probably stretch any serving into two meals, but when you need something really filling that will power you through the rest of the day, El Colmado is a perfect lunch move. photo credit: Emily Schindler" - Carlo Mantuano

Come here if you want to get ripped off. They make up prices on the spot depending on their perception of how much they can get away with charging you. Unlucky for them I'm from NYC and know when people are just trying to make a quick buck. I have literally come to this shop just a few weeks ago with a hispanic friend and ordered the SAME turkey and cheese deli sandwich and was charged $5 but now i'm charged $8 when i come here by myself? I just moved to the area from Queens and would have continued coming here to support small local business but at this point they are killing their own business with these shady practices. Take note of the "open price" marked on the receipt. So crazy and actually sad but the economy is rough for EVERYONE and all of our pockets are hurting. Businesses that aren't ethical aren't going to last long and would hate for anyone else to get ripped off here as well just because the people here think they can upcharge just because they assume you are a transplant. Also, side note that they didn't put vinegar, oil and mustard on the sandwich like I asked.

DELICIOUS! Best mofongo & chicharron in Manhattan. Takes exactly like the one in PR that my family serves me. Everything is so flavorful and juicy and the chicharron is so incredibly crispy but still fatty. Was perfect for takeout and I’ll def be going back all the time

This place is very clean, has nice staff, and cooks up pretty authentic Dominican food. I ate a delicious plate of tres golpes and received a fresh plate of food with a generous portion of mangu. Wish we had places like this on the West Coast. I will come back for sure next time I’m in NYC!

Legitimately the best chicharron I’ve ever had. They use the pork belly and the St. Louis part of the ribs - explosively delicious, crispy, juicy, all of the adjectives. The mangu is excellent, but like all fresh mangu it isn’t good for long. I definitely recommend ordering it in the morning, I haven’t tried it after 11 am, and probably wouldn’t. Finally, the morir sonando is INCREDIBLE. A good bit of cinnamon floats on top, and they use premium orange juice. Worth every penny, and I didn’t spend many

This place is super convenient. But let's talk about the most important thing. The FOOD! I have had food here a few times and it never disappoints. Today I tried the Mangu. Absolutely delicious. The service is great. A small family run store that has all the necessities you need. A true gem. 💎
