Stopped here for lunch during a road trip and was delighted by the speed and quality. I had delicious asada tacos on a corn tortilla and my daughter had the quesadilla. It was quick, hot, and perfect. Definitely stop here if you’re in the area!

Google
Yesterday morning I decided to get a lil adventurous and stopped by el comal to find a warming meal there was absolutely no disappointment they always deliver exceptional meals 😋 highly recommend for any locals or pass by visitors

Michelle Timian

Google
One of the best tacos I’ve ever had! My family and I love stopping by on Fridays…super friendly staff, delicious food and great atmosphere.

Emma Bos

Google
The service is quick and the food is excellent. I got the steak and the chicken tacos. This was a great stop for a quick lunch, but I would love to sit down and try the rest of their menu!

Kevin Kehl

Google
Been going here for years and always love the food here. Wednesday is $1.50 Tacos. Service is extremely good.

Ricardo De La Torre

Google
The food here is authentic and delicious staff is really friendly and the inside has been newly remodeled. Great for a quick lunch or dining in with family/friends

Oscar Becerra

Google
A hidden gem for sure. This is what we want out of Mexican restaurants - authentic tasting food, big portions they are clearly not stingy with it, and reasonable price points. Not over priced despite the times.

D watson

Google
Cash only and no horchata, but food was flavorful and great! Will definitely go back. (Atm inside) 9 months later and I still find myself calling ahead for orders. Can not go wrong with the huaraches! Shrimp with avacado is a personal favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food. Great tacos on taco Wednesday for a reduced price. Will definitely be back to try the burritos ! Sorry we were hungry and didn't take pictures..next time!

Yelp
Tortas for the win! I've been here a twice since traveling to this area for work and it's been great both times. All the staff is very friendly. I've never had a Torta before as the Mexican restaurants in Ohio don't have them! The Chorizo Torta is great and highly recommend trying it out. I'm sure all the great here, so definitely give it a shot. I'm going to try the Huevos con Chorizo so hopefully it's just as good!

Yelp
This place never disappoints. Very casual place where you order at counter and wait for number to be called. The place is always clean and has good amount of seating area and tvs. 1.50 tacos on Wednesdays and their huaraches are huge served with grilled onion and lime . Ordered 3 steak tacos cilantro only , usually comes with onion as well and a huarache yesterday with horchata . Taco meat was great and large amount, as per usual they have two tortillas per taco, could probably make extra tacos with the amount of meat they provide . Hubby got his favorite the steak huarache and ate it quick , he was happy afterwards. Horchata is always a good choice , good flavor and refreshing . Local spot to check out for lunch in my opinion when you want to eat and go! Check it out

Yelp
The best homemade Mexican food. I almost always get shrimp tacos. Best pico. Great service. You could eat in or take it to go like we do. Don't miss the horchata.

Sara M.

Yelp
Have been going there for $1.50 taco Wednesday since 2019. The employees know me by name and treat me like family. The tacos are always on point. Good food and good people.

Yelp
Had a steak burrito and tacos al pastor. Meat in burrito was a mix of old hard overcooked meat with newer meat. Not that flavorful. Al pastor was a little better but again hard, dry and overcooked. Will definitely not be coming back. How they have 4.3 stars is beyond me. Maybe the cheeseburger?
google avatar

Yelp
I had high hopes for El Comal due to the reviews. The sign upon entering says they do accept credit and debit now. We went on a Wednesday for their $1.50 tacos. Oddly, they are not full size yet, not street size if that makes sense. We ordered at the window because they do not have servers apparently. We dined in and I asked if we still get chips and salsa...we had to pay $5 for them. We ordered 1 of each steak, pork, and chicken taco...a steak burrito, fries, and rice. $35 .The fries and the rice were $4 each for small servings. Rice is dry and no flavor. Meat is overcooked and dry. No elotes and no spicy pickled carrots. We will stick to El Chivo.

Jayden S.

Yelp
This food was good! but there was a few things to add for this the service was kinda meh and they forgot my sisters tacos. The ambiance was clean floors, some tables were dirty but only few workers were there. overall 3.5/5
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
Still five stars. Food is still great, and the service is lightning fast. I ordered a to go order of steak huraches, a chicken burrito with beans and rice, and chips and salsa. Order was done in less than five minutes. Owner just rocked it right out the door. Please support this place they're still awesome! One thing of note they're still cash only.

G S.

Yelp
Good solid Mexican food. Family run, good amount of seating, clean, opens early for lunch. Mexican food is authentic and good, with all the expected sides. Love the grilled chilies! Even the Cheeseburger and fries are Good!
google avatar

Yelp
Sooo I finally tried it. I got 4 steak tacos with onion and cilantro. Two on corn, two on flour. The plus is the place is cheap and there is plenty steak on the tacos. The tortillas both corn and flour were good. The steak itself is flavorless. No seasoning at all. Tastes like boiled cheap meat. I do not recommend
google avatar

Yelp
Food is soooo goood. The service it's alright. The place inside is loud they need to put down the volume of the music. And they need yell more loud or get a microphone to call out the numbers you could barely hear them because of the loud music.
google avatar

Lizbeth A.

Yelp
If you come here you need to get the asada and shrimp huarache. Tip: get both meats together it is THE BOMB
google avatar

Howard L.

Yelp
I don't order Mexican food too much but me and the guys wanted to come here to grab something to eat. Area may seem a bit sketchy but this place definitely isn't. Employees and menu are both in English and Spanish which was great. The restaurant is clean, employees were friendly, it's got a great atmosphere. Great beans and great variety of tacos. Came here especially for dollar taco Wednesday. Parking may be tough and awkward. Prices are decent. Good place to check out

Yelp
A great treat for authentic Mexican food. This casual spot offers a great lunch menu and wonderful customer service.

Yelp
OMG! Where am I ! I order tripa crispy they made really crispy which I loved. who made this? sooo good! Lengua also delish . chorizo.. little crisp and little spicy well balanced. Look little small, but plenty of meat so my stomach said enough!! Also they serve chips and 3 kind of salsa also good..1 problem .. I checked menu they don't have desert. Usually tasty restaurant carry good flan but that's ok food is as so good !! Place is up dated because bath room is so clean !!

Yelp
Great tacos seasoned perfectly... will be going here quite often! Also $1.50 tacos on Wednesday! What a deal .. but cash only ..

Yelp
This hole in the wall is the one! Come get your authentic Mexican here and then come back and get your authentic Mexican here. Here's a rundown on the goods: Steak - tender and flavorful - nicely seasoned Chicken - all white meat chunks - nicely seasoned Pastor - Yes! Chorizo - if you like greasy Mexican sausage. You must try their huaraches, pronounced wuh-rah-chay. It's basically a big floppy taco, piled with yumminess all in a handmade soft corn tortilla. The burritos will you run you 5 bucks and it is quite big. They don't skimp on the meat or toppings here. Service is quick and friendly and they give you a ton of salsas, limes and peppers. It's usually packed here and the place is very small - but you can always call your order in ahead!

Yelp
This is Phenomenal Mexican Food on Moen Ave in Rockdale. Everything I've had is excellent and the staff is very friendly. Bring Ca$h. No Cards Accepted

Yelp
Busy restaurant in a small town. Good size portions and friendly staff. Only down side.. no alcohol is served to go along with my food.
google avatar

Abby O.

Yelp
Delicious food!table chips and salsa while you wait for your food. Our food took a little longer but it was because they were making the sopes fresh. They were warm crispy and delicious

Esteban B.

Yelp
They have some of the best food I have ever had. Their costumer service is also really good.
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
Decent food..Tacos were good..Tostadas were huge. Prices were usually prices, nothing special. But all in all it was good food, and we will be back.

Yelp
El Comal, how I love thee. I didn't think I'd be impressed the first time I pulled up to such a run down area but man was I wrong. I moved from IL to MN and haven't been able to find a taco quite like El Comal's. They're cash only and have an ATM inside if needed. If you're in the area, it's worth a stop by.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food!!! Recommend definitely! Very clean and lovely atmosphere. Worth the drive.

Yelp
I have heard good things about El Comal for quite some time and finally got to try it today. I was very happy with the restaurant for the most part. El Comal is located in Rockdale, IL on a street that is famous for being in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most bars on one street (or something like that). So the neighborhood is somewhat sketchy, but if you can past that it is definitely worth a stop. It was slammed at noon when we arrived, not an open table in the place. Quite a mix of blue and white collar workers which tells me that this place is not a secret to those in the know in Joliet. I managed to read a few reviews while standing in line and kept seeing comments about the huaraches. Now I've eaten at a hundred different Mexican places and one thing that I thought was odd is that every place has pretty much the same selections on thier menu. How the hell have I never heard of a huaraches???? I ordered the Tripas Huaraches and a Mixed Huaraches (steak, pork and chorizo). I give them both a solid A. The best explanation I can give you is a really long soft taco that isn't rolled up and the taco shell is home made and unlike any taco I've ever had. Now, the salsa and the beans and rice leave a lot to be desired. Had some of the sides been adequate I would have definitely given EL Comal a five star review!! Give it a shot, you wont be dissapointed!

Yelp
Nice hidden find in Rockdale of all places. This is the kind of eatery you'll find either by accident or came staggering out one of the 10+ bars the town has looking for some cheap, greasy food. Tacos were above average. (especially when they're $1.00 each on Wednesdays) Its of the authentic kind and when they say if you want it with everything, they're referring to adding onions, cilantro on them. The huaraches was disappointing but was quite relieved that it was only a mere $3.25. It was just a long tortilla with some diced steak on it. However, I found a balled-up styrofoam in my bag containing long onion strips and a jalapeno, which I assume was for the huarache but didn't make it that much better. My pork burrito was the real winner here. If you like your burritos with lots of meat, beans, and cheese and with little lettuce and tomato, then you've come to the right place. I've had burritos from numerous places and I rank the ones here right at top. Overall, I liked Tacos El Comal but the huarache and being cash only prevents this place from 5 stars. Everything else is great!

Yelp
Not a lot of lunch options here in j-town, so we decided on Mexican for a change and hit up this little gem in Rockdale. This looks like your typical hole in the wall, no frills, CASH ONLY taqueria but oh my, it is sooo not run of the mill!!! The specialty here are the huaraches, which is pretty much a long, HUGE taco. But what sets this place apart from the others? FRESH TORTILLAS!!! They make it from scratch!!! You can't find that ANYWHERE!!! I ordered a steak (asada) hurache and a gordita with chicharron guisado (stewed pork skins in a very spicy sauce) All delicious and very cheap!!! My husband had al pastor and lengua and he was quite pleased with his choices. Spanish and English are spoken here for all my non-bilingual friends. I was being nosey and looked at other peoples plates at I saw some delicious looking omelettes with their fresh tortillas on the side and some very good looking burritos. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This was an alright Place. I got 2 carne asada tacos and I have had better. If you aren't aware when you come the chips and salsa they bring you aren't free and they aren't the best either.

J M.

Yelp
Was looking for a taco place for lunch and close to work. This place popped up and decided to give it a try. I ordered a gordita de chicharrón, 1 steak taco & 1 al pastor. Not only was I hungry but giving myself options in case I didn't like one of the items. I ate everything! The place does not have much curb appeal but don't let that deter you. Service was excellent, too! The only thing is it is CASH only, however there is an ATM machine. But save yourself the $3 atm fee and and bring cash. Happy i found my go-to place for lunch!
google avatar

Mark K.

Yelp
We've eaten burritos as well as their tacos and everything was fantastic. Their chips and salsa are excellent when dining in. ~ All around good authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Adriana D.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic homemade Mexican food, this is definitely the place for you! The owner recently updated the restaurant, so it's very much spacious and comfortable environment compared to what it use to be, but can you blame them if their food is so good? Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Doesn't look very big. But they have great food. We went kind of early. So we got served right away. We finished eating and ordered tacos to go for my son. That took a little bit longer. But wasn't too long at all. I wish I knew about this place sooner. We have been trying to find a good Mexican restaurant, both my husband and I would like, for years. This is the first one we both liked. I'd suggest everyone try this place.

Yelp
Nestled in the SE side of Joliet (Rockdale) is this little GEM. El Comal serves authentic Mexican cuisine with a heaping side of family pride. Always busy in this small joint, but the food is consistently delicious. Wednesday is $1 tacos - so call ahead and bring CASH...NO debit/credit accepted. They have ice cream and a large variety of Jarritos soda. Dine in or carryout they provide home made hot/mild salsas and limes. The fresh tortillas whether it be corn or flour are moist. I usually order 15-20 tacos for my family - they are packed 3 tacos per foil wrap and always include onion and cilantro. We like the steak/potato with cheese, onion and cilantro - but everything I had here is good. Why only 4 stars? 98% of the time I order 3 tacos with no meat for my vegetarian daughter they've given me all steak tacos...I finally quit ordering meatless tacos. Take away these 3 reminders: Authentic Family Mexican, CASH only and No booze here.
google avatar

Patrick J.

Yelp
Great fresh authentic Mexican food. Nice customer service. Small jewel in a small town. The women in the kitchen cooking are very good and professional cooks. Try them out.
google avatar

Malissa A.

Yelp
Tacos are good!! Service was slow, we got greeted instantly and the server didn't come back for about 20 minutes. Good weekly specials
google avatar

Cynthia R.

Yelp
Very disappointed, the steak was not asada. No matter how much limón or salsa we put on the tacos it did not make a difference. I do not recommend this place and who doesn't have horchata in a taqueria?!
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
No horchata?! Rockdale is like a quiet movie set for something set in a deserted, wild west town. Rockdale is just south of Joliet and might as well be a part of Joliet. I discovered Rockdale when I had to pick up a package from the UPS facility. Curiosity led me to searching for restaurants in Rockdale, and that's how I found El Comal. As I already mentioned, they don't have horchata. What the FF? They do have a variety of Jarritos sodas though, so I got the pineapple. My husband and I had lunch here on Memorial Day, I was surprised how busy this spot was on a Monday afternoon. While we were eating, lots of people would come and go, and at one point, all of the tables were full. The food is good. I had 2 tacos: one steak, chicken, and pork. All three were equally good, served on soft corn tortillas with the customary cilantro and onion. Chips and salsa are complimentary, and there are 3 salsas to choose from. We also ordered the guacamole, which was served in a styrofoam bowl. The food is good, authentic, and great for a casual lunch or dinner. Prices are great too, I think the tacos were only $1.25 each. Cash only! If you live in Plainfield, drive the few extra miles to El Comal, because I still stand by the fact that there is no truly good Mexican food in Plainfield, especially tacos.

Yelp
So, the boy went out for a drive with the neighbor boy and went to a place that had terrific "big tacos". Where I ask? Don't know ask the neighbor boy. Where I ask neighbor boy? Don't know - somewhere on a main street. Luckily there are only like two main streets in Rockdale and after a little web searching I found the correct place.Teeny tiny little hole in the wall in an industrial area that I would never have come across. Turns out these "big tacos" are known as huaraches and are the specialty here: homemade large tortillas stuffed with a choice of filling, cheese, cilantro and diced onion. Served on the side are grilled onions and lime. Yum! Boy had the steak and I had the daily special of chorizo and potato. We also shared the guacamole which was homemade and a big step above most Mexican fast food places. Total bill with two drinks was @$12. We were going to carryout but decided to eat in. To our table we were brought tortilla chips with salsa verde, salsa roja and pickled jalapenos. This was a nice suprise for a fast food restaurant.
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
I stopped in here today for a few quick tacos, and overall the food was good. It wasn't the best I have ever had, not even the best in the area. It was just good. I will not be returning however because of the amount of dirt on the walls and ceilings. If there is this much dust and grime right in Plain sight above my head, makes me wonder how much of it is not in my sight. I had high hopes for this place, but I refuse to eat anywhere where I have to check my food for dust bunnies
google avatar

Kass O.

Yelp
Best Huaraches in the area! Served with caramelized onions and a serrano pepper. Plenty of meat in it (cilantro onions). Also, the sopes are good too! Cash only

Yelp
I have had the privilege of finding this hidden gem about 4 years ago when I worked nearby. Carlos and his staff have truly created a masterpiece. It does not matter what you order because everything is Amazing! The quality of ingredients is second to none. What sets Tacos El Comal apart from the competition is their hueraches, which is hardly found in authentic Mexican cuisine. What makes the huerache unique is that it is larger than a taco and has a sweet, corn/flour hybrid fluffy tortilla. furthermore, Tacos El Comal is one of a kind because of the salsa. The salsa has flavor that I have never tasted at any other authentic Mexican restaurant ever!!! Particularly The red salsa has a smoky flavor great with steak. Carlos, the owner Is a very friendly and is always working alongside his coworkers, and interacting with customers. Carlos takes pride in getting to know his customers and community. Do not be surprised if you are the only individual there that speaks english, which I think is a good thing because you know it's authentic. Another key feature is that it's super cheap. For 6 bucks a big guy like me can get full and still have quality. My wife and now live an hour away and still make trips to come here. Bottom line: if you are looking for quality food and casual dining with a good culture and sense of community than this is the place for you. If you are a Pepes type of person looking for happy hour than this is not your place. OH AND BRING CASH, NO CARDS ACCEPTED!!!!

Daniel R.

Yelp
I'm going to preface this by saying this is a review of their carry-out tacos because I haven't had anything else from there. This place is good. Really good. Like, really really good. The tacos are cheap ($1 Wednesdays!) but on the smaller side, which is fine. I get three tacos and it's enough for a thinner adult male. And believe me when I say their chicken is their best meat. All the meat is good, but the chicken is especially good and has just a slight spice to it that you don't even notice until halfway through your second taco. The only gripe I have with this place, and it isn't a gripe with this place really but, is that the woman who works the phone/register doesn't speak very good English. It's passable, and I get my orders in, but when you're trying to order 40 tacos, the language barrier becomes pronounced. But, I'm not going to knock any stars because the food really is that good. If you go here be aware they only take cash!
google avatar

Kyle T.

Yelp
Some of the worst service I have seen in the restaurant industry. The servers just wander around and do nothing. Try to pay for you meal? Even harder! Everyone working needs some customer service training. I have heard of alot of people telling my this place was good. I was expecting authentic food.....not so much. Very bland. Sub par food and red water for salsa. I wouldn't go back it if was free.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
I always leave this place happy because the food is that good! Anytime I'm at a place that serves tacos I get carne. This place serves bottles of soda and not fountain drinks and the salsa is very spicy. Beans and rice are so good. I would go back.
google avatar

Tom E.

Yelp
The food is delicious and i ordered a torta and it was just perfect. I will definitely be coming back soon!

Yelp
Found this hole in the wall place with great food and great prices! Id highly recommend

Yelp
Best Mexican food in will county, HANDS DOWN. This is the real deal!!!!

Jocelyn C.

Yelp
No menu online! No calories per plate! No description of what the food is and only cash! OHh and may I mention the nasty trash they leave outside for everyone to see. What a nasty place! Very outdated and dirty!
