Philadelphia’s Best Puerto Rican Restaurants

"When you’re in the mood for delicious pastries or quick takeout, head to I street in Harrowgate to check out El Coqui Panadería (just a couple blocks away from Càphê Roasters). El Coqui’s hot food bar is stocked with tasty, affordable PR staples, including morcilla, pastelón, and plenty of alcapurrias de guineo and yuca. What makes El Coqui so special, though, is the bakery. They’re serving up sweet treats like bizcocho de almendra, creamy quesitos, and more. They also make their own pan sobao, a delightfully soft and slightly sweet typical Puerto Rican bread. This is the primary reason a Tripleta sandwich is a must-have here. Its tri-meat combination includes pan-seared bistec, pernil, and ham. FYI—they’re undergoing renovations so there’s no seating at the moment, so call ahead or order online." - carolyn rivera, candis mclean

Google
First time visiting, staff very helpful. Pastries DELICIOUS and fresh baked bread AWSOME. They serve hot good also on the other side but just got Pastries. Definitely will go there again if visiting Philadelphia again.

I regretfully spent $60 at this place on food that turned out to be terrible. I have never had such unpleasant food from this establishment or anywhere else. I called to inform them about the issue and explained that I still had all the food with me. However, they responded by saying that they do not receive complaints and therefore cannot address the situation. Although disappointed, I acknowledged their response. The food was truly awful, as if it had been sitting out all day. Even now, two days later, I still have the food. In fact, I can post a picture of it to further illustrate my point. I will never recommend anyone to go here or spend their money because the establishment prioritizes greed and money over their customers. It is unfortunate that this undermines the reputation of Latinos. I wish you a blessed day.

Yo this people are the best hands down when it comes to food and pastries. If you're looking for a spot to eat and get some good food and pastries this is the place. 15/10 service no cap. And the OG is the best just know if he serving you, you in good hands.

If you’re in the area and want to grab something to eat before heading home from work you can find some delicious Spanish food here & desserts different choices!!

Google
Todo delicioso. Everything was delicious and fed us for two days. I got a whole chicken and habichuelas. Pastries at the bakery were fantastic, but I was disappointed to cut what was supposed to be a guava pastry only to find strawberry inside.

Google
any and every time I am home (Philly), this place is a must go. For their pastellitos, sopa (soup), or house made bread. The bakery 🥰, A-plus. donuts, cookies, tarts, and their lush/ moist almond cake. This place is a lil piece of the island. 🇵🇷

Google
It's usually much better. The food was cold and didn't taste as good as before. Id still go maybe they had an off day.

Yelp
Some of the best, if not the best, Puerto Rican food in Philly. I was working close by this place - a few blocks away, and was actually lured in by the smell. Everyday around 10:00 am, the smells of mofungo and pernil are radiating throughout the neighborhood. Now I can't go without ordering for lunch, maybe a little side dish for dinner, and some dessert/pastries too. I have never had a dish/meal here that wasn't absolutely delicious. I leave fully satisfied and wishing I ordered more every time. I can sit here and list all of the items I have tried and would recommend, but it would end up being half the menu. But you have to grab at least 1 empanada when you're there - there's cheese, beef, chicken, beef and cheese, chicken and cheese, shrimp and crab filled. If you're looking for a sandwich, the cubano or el entregao, con todo is the way to go. The platters and the mofongo dishes are amazing also. The bakery always has a line of people waiting. My pastry favorites here are the tornillos and the guava pastelillos, but only because I can't stop ordering them to try anything else. You can order online off of Grubhub (not sure if any other app/website works with them), if you don't feel like waiting in line when you get there. Sandwiches are made to order, and take about 15ish minutes to make, same with any made to order items. If you don't speak Spanish you may struggle a little here. The staff speaks mainly Spanish, there are a few staff that speak some English but not everyone does, so be sure to know what you're ordering and do your best if you encounter a language barrier. Long story short, if you want authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, you know where to go - El Coqui.

Yelp
Always plenty of parking I love coming here and getting bakery item, pastellio and a platter when I'm really hungry. I initially had issues when I would go and attempt to place an order. Most staff members didn't understand me or speak English. I would sometimes have people in line order my beef and cheese pastellio despite me reading from the sign in front of the dish and pointing to exactly what I wanted. I go so often that I think they recognize my face. I've even put my co-workers onto this place and we frequent it often, so often that it's in our rotation when we have big events and need catering. However, this week my co worker had a very negative encounter with one of the workers. My co worker is not Hispanic and goes often (at least once a week but often twice a week). She goes to order her usual of a chicken and cheese pastellio and the worker behind the counter tossed her hands up in frustration and got another worker to assist her. My co worker said the same thing she said to the 1st lady who said ok, and told the other lady in Spanish what was asked for before going back to do what she was doing. The lady put the pastellio in the bag and walked it to the register where she tossed it on the counter and once again tossed her arms up in frustration. This is very rude. We spend a lot of money in this establishment and although we do not speak the language, we try when ordering and we may not have the accents but you also understand what we are ordering. I too have had a similar encounter when I first started going where people would just look at me and get someone else to help. Only for me to hear them speaking broken English when they felt like it. Great food but customer service all depends on who wants to take your order if your not Spanish speaking. There are a few staff members who are very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
The food is excellent, reminds me of my grandmother's cooking. The bread is the authentic Puerto Rican bread, and it delivers warm and fresh!!! The pastries are sooo good.

Yelp
Stopped by recently for pastelillos and pastries, which are worth it. Their pastelillos had a nice crunchy texture on the outside and perfect flavoring for the meat inside. The staff is friendly and the place is really clean. Definitely check it out if you're in the mood to try something new.

Yelp
Love it! Just like PR bakery in Philadelphia awesome I travel from Delaware so imagine
google avatar

Retna S.

Yelp
My workplace ordered empanadas, I tried the chicken and ground beef. Not too greasy. A lot of fillings, nice crunch, very tasty
google avatar

Yelp
The food is sooooo good and the price is so reasonable. The food is fresh and the pastries are a little taste of home. We ordered and egg and cheese on sweet bread and it was so good and the perfect amount of everything. I will definitely be back. There's so many guayaba pastries and island drinks! The kola champagne and the fresh juices were so good.
google avatar

Geannina L.

Yelp
Food was good and portions were big. The only thing I didn't like was that there was no place to sit.
google avatar

Mary G.

Yelp
Really delicious baked goods. I highly recommend their guava/coconut cake and their tembleque. The pan sobao is so fresh and tasty. Pastellios are really good too, with their cheesy and flavorful fillings.

Yelp
First time in Philly and my bf and I wanted some Puerto Rican treats, ended up leaving with a whole lunch feast. Taste is amazing and so authentic. He's from the island so he was a hard critic. He loved his Quesito.
google avatar

Tatiana J.

Yelp
the best Puerto Rican food I've ever gotten from a takeout place, the rice was delicious & the shrimp pastelillos were amazing. The cupcakes from the bakery were also very good. Service was fast

Yelp
Food quality 100% Ticket timing 34% Customer service 09% Hospitality 0% I will give them a star for the food quality Manager have a nasty attitude towards customers This is so sad
google avatar

Yelp
The food is very good. One of the few places close to Philly that knows how to make a mofongo, but the service is awful. They treat you like they are doing you a favor. Asked for mayoketchup and see how they'll roll their eyes like you're crazy. Go to another place.

Yelp
Being that I lived in Puerto Rico for a few years when I was younger, you can imagine how excited I was when I heard about a Puerto Rican bakery in Philly! As soon I saw it on Yelp, I was quick to bookmark it and only one week later, I made the drive over to check it out. This bakery is located in a strip mall which I was very happy about - if there's a way for me to avoid parallel parking, I'LL TAKE IT. The bakery feels very homely and authentic. The woman that took my order was a complete doll. She made sure everything I ordered was handled with care and wrapped and packaged perfectly. I chose an assortment of sweets to bring home including three different puff pastries (guava, piña, and cream cheese) and a pineapple and cream cheese cake like pastry. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the last one but it was my favorite (see photo)! The cream cheese and pineapple was a great combination. Perfect balance of fruity, sweet, and creamy. It was also huge making it good to share! The puff pastries were very flaky. The guava is the one that stood out to me the most. It was bursting with flavor! Be warned that it is definitely a messy eat - there was powdered sugar EVERYWHERE. The other two pastries were good, but a little dry. I'd probably skip out on them next time. Prices are fantastic. Everything I got ranged from $1 - $3 a piece. I'm very happy to have discovered this place and would love to visit again to try their food and more pastries and sweets! Since I'm not in this area very often, I probably won't be visiting El Coqui as much as I would like, but it's a place I'll keep in mind for days when I can make the trip. I'd recommend checking it out if you're in the area and want a little taste of Puerto Rico!

Yelp
I recommend this place 100000% to anybody who wants to have a authentic food from Puerto Rico. Everything here is delicious and prices are reasonable. I was able to find a lot of my favorite foods in here. Their service is quick and friendly. They also have a bakery with a huge selection of sweets including the typical "bizcocho mojadito" among other things.

Yelp
First of all it always feels like home, foods always neat from breakfast to lunch an dinner. Foods always cooked everyday you can definitely feed your family, way less then going to a fast food chain. Sándwiches made with love sweet bread or regular bread still good. Coffee that wakes you up non of that latte stuff that people get. They also have that pastries for family events an gatherings just phenomenal. Don't even get me started on the juices you have to try it. I come here when I visit my family in the area. Prices are worth it the people that come by just feels right and most of all the staff is always working hard I appreciate the work they do I understand that it's busy at times but they keep things under control. Gracias y mucha salud y bendiciones

Yelp
although everything was good I found something in my desert . be careful is all I'm saying watch what you eat in there .

Yelp
I had my first quesito and it taste amazing. I thought I would have to fly all the way to P.R. to get one. I also had the tripleta which was great as well. El Coqui did not disappoint. I can't wait to order a different puerto rican pastry.

Yelp
Got a warm loft of bread they have a few different items for breakfast and lunch was delicious will try other food items
google avatar

Yelp
Ok I'm Dominican and always looking for authentic delish places and this place is great the empanadas feel like mama made them, the food is sooo good- I love that it's right next to a great grocery store. Would def recommend- great mofo, pernil, cubano you name it!
google avatar

Pastora Itzel E.

Yelp
I wish there was a Puerto Rican bakery in my area. When I went in to the bakery it just reminded me of home even though the cases were a little bit empty and that's why I had to give it four stars. The food was good the people were nice it's just home in a little bakery in Philadelphia. Another thing that I can say needs to get fixed is the mofongo was not as authentic as I wanted to but other than that delicious
google avatar

Alice J.

Yelp
My family was hungry after church and everything tastes so good! The service was fast and the empanadas were crunchy and amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious wedding style cakes available on demand! Even through covid, they remain fair priced and super fresh authentic food. I think I've put on like 10lbs ordering or picking up here. I've had it delivered and always arrives piping hot, so it travels well. They package things in a way that nothing gets soggy or anything. Pastries are top notch. Will support this business for ever!
google avatar

Mialma T.

Yelp
Super pleasant surprise! This is what I've been missing since I left the island. Their pastries are what they should be and reasonably priced. No idea what the other reviews are talking about... Their smaller desserts like 3 leches are also available in bigger size if ordered a few days ahead of time (wish I had known!). The icing on it is how you know it was made right. Ran into too many places just slapping on slipped cream or canned icing.. Ugh. Will be coming back! Can't wait to try their lunch! Foh. Me facina! Vuelvo pronto a probar el almuerzo!

Yelp
Worst Experience ever, last Friday for lunch I decided to not cook and bring my family dinner. so I waited in line their was 11 customers in line when it was my turn to order the front counter is a mess all of the people waiting in line was all over me and the mess of customers trying to place their food orders. I was approached by a woman I started to tell her what I wanted so I started by ordering a green salad with tomatoes, morcilla, arroz con gandules, along with 8 alcapurrias, when I order my roast pork I said may I get the crackling skin with roast pork she said that they didn't have any skin she indicated that they cook the roast pork all shredded so people can eat heathy I was not going to let someone tell me how to eat roast pork. I said those decisions should not come from anyone but the customer. then she recommended fried pork chunks I said ok when I got home to serve the food it got worse the rice was not a typical Puerto Rican rice it was like serving rice with soy sauce and salty as can be. the fried chunks of pork was a pieces of salt, the green salad was on a side of my rice platter 1 tomato, and piece of yellowish brown lettuce. the only good items was the morcilla which its already made and they sell it by the pound. The surprise is that I am a Chef that specializes in the Puerto Cookery owned and operated a Restaurant in Old City Philadelphia with Catering services for corporate functions and all events. the most important thing about a restaurant is to maintain authentic recipes and have your staff educated with customer service along with recognizing the Puerto Rican cuisines even if you are not from Puerto Rico. I have been to Coqui 3 times before this has been my worst experience, I will be calling El Coqui to speak to the owner I waisted $ 50 on food that was not editable I will not come back the biggest joke about my experience is that if they really care about the well being and the customers health the food is a silent killer with the excessive amount of sodium, I don't like to give negative feedback but the woman that took care of me asked me in front of the public if I came from Guavate Puerto Rico that specializes in the Best Roast Pork of the Island she tried to mock the situation but I have too much class for her lack of knowledge. so my final score for El Coqui is - 1
google avatar

Shawna H.

Yelp
Only come here for the bakery and only then late afternoon. If you come in morning you'll be in line until the afternoon anyway. The food is traditional Spanish fare but underwhelming and cold. Rice and beans doesn't look fresh. Chicken hard as a rock and cold. The dough for chicken patties is delicious (hence my recommendation for baked items) but that was cold so took away from taste. They need a better system for service. The person who gets your food also moves over to ring you up. This makes for slowest moving line in history of fast food places. And every employee is surly. Idk if they're tired from long work day but why take it out on customers?
google avatar

Tina K.

Yelp
Best place ever!!! Love their mofongo and pastries! Great atmosphere everyone is so welcoming even if you don't speak Spanish!
google avatar

Maya J M.

Yelp
The best Puerto Rican dood I ever had. The pastries are delicious. I'm never disappointed with the new deserts I tried. You can tell they were made with love and passion. The hot food ass well is fresh and amazing. You can tell it's good quality meat and ingredients. The workers are friendly, most of the time. You can feel the island and family vibes on the store. The seating is plenty and very comfortable. Well Done, I definitely recommend this place to someone looking for quality homemade food at s good price.

Marissa R.

Yelp
The guava pastries are my all-time favorite. And I don't even like pastries, as a rule. A few pro-tips: - Cakes need to be ordered two weeks in advance. - Their website has some contact-by-email options. DON'T. (You probably won't get a response.) Just show up. - Some staff speak English, but not all. However, if your Spanish isn't fluent enough to (for example) order a cake in, odds are that a friendly fellow customer will happily translate for you.
google avatar

Annette S.

Yelp
I've been here several times and although the food is good, they are definitely lacking in customer service. Every time I've been, I've had subpar customer service. The bakery side is usually better so I'll give them that. I went in this morning for avena (oatmeal) and it was lukewarm, the lady behind the register made no eye contact and didn't even give me the bag...I had to ask for the oatmeal and she walked away, another young lady passed the bag over the register to me.
google avatar

MARY Q.

Yelp
Great selection of pastries. I want to try everything. I'll definitely come back. I got the vanilla and queso flan. I also bought the yellow rice and pernil.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Their cakes are super delicious and I've ordered cakes from there numerous times, I can remember though not being satisfied with the way the cake looked maybe about twice, and they are pretty pricey. They charged me $140 for an "ass" cake and it didn't look anything like the picture I showed them and it was super small
google avatar

Yerliz O.

Yelp
I love this place!!! Great food, delicious desserts and very good customer service!!!
google avatar

Rosaura C.

Yelp
Great variety of delicious Puerto Rican favorites at reasonable prices. Has a dining area.

Rae C.

Yelp
The pastelillos were amazing! The chicken & queso was by far our favorite today but I can't wait to return to Philly & get more. It's definitely a neighborhood favorite. People were lined up at 8am to get theirs & told us it's the best Puerto Rican food around.
google avatar

Jamie M.

Yelp
Great bakery, delicious food. It's really busy at all times of the day, so expect to wait in line for a bit- definitely worth the wait. The location is a bit out of the way (a short walk from the Tioga El stop, then up the hill to Harrowgate Plaza). Makes for a delicious destination If you're visiting, or a nice stroll if you're local. Either way, bring your appetite!
google avatar

Josmarie M.

Yelp
they have very good quality cakes very moist and delicious but pricy , their fried pastries are really greasy. I would just recommend the cakes.
google avatar

Pablo G.

Yelp
Very good place food delicious.my family and me went there and everything was organized food really good.can't say nothing bad about it ,customer service was excellent, overall perfect day with the family thumbs up.

Dave H.

Yelp
Great food. Good prices. Super causal spot with authentic food and everyone speaks Spanish which makes it easy to order for anyone
google avatar

Carmen M.

Yelp
From service to variety to amazing taste. I make it a point when I do go before work to make it there early for the Avena or arina de maiz. It sells out fast. The baked goods and packaged items are so good. I'm taken back to grandmoms house in PR. Clean and comfortable please with plenty of parking.

Yelp
I had an interesting experience.I call this place THE BADLANDS BAKERY.I ordered 2 pastellos,1 potato ball and a 16.9oz bottle of kola champagne. I was charged almost $8.00? I did the math and it was WAY off.The lady who waited on me said it was because of the 8% Philly tax. Also,I noticed a charge for using a debit card. I handed her $2.00 for the kola champagne because I opened it and declined the order.(but no sales tax charged on the soda?) The cooked food looked old and nasty,Maybe she thought I couldn't read nor understand Spanish But I can.Lol. The pastries are decent, but very overpriced! I'm sorry this place is next to the Badlands and they charge Beverly hills prices. Its a ghetto business and they don't care bottom line! I'M ALSO GOING TO PUT MY REVIEW IN SPANISH.!!! THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER PLACES IN THE LATINO COMMUNITY TO GET MUCH BETTER SPANISH FOOD AND BAKED GOODS AT DECENT PRICES ALONG WITH SATISFACTORY SERVICE!! Tenía una experience.i interesante ordenó pastellos 2, 1 bola de patata y una botella de champán de cola. Me cobraron casi $ 8,00?

Yelp
Worst customer service ever I order 2 sandwich with ham and Swiss Cheese. She only put one down The sandwich didn't even have cheese in it and waited like 20 minutes for it and it was cold. So I went on the line again to order a pincho, pastelitos and another juice and to ask for my sandwiches when I get to the front I ask the girl with the glasses that don't have no customer service skills and don't understand Spanish or English with a really ugly attitude If my order was ready and she told me no it's not ready and Excuse me so I can take other people's orders with a really nasty tone and attitude ! When I was going to order more food she's really rude and she was rolling her eyes at me so when I go to the the girl that was cashing people out and ask for my sandwich my sandwich was just sitting there it was nasty and cold and she only put one sandwich when I clearly repeated it myself ! She couldn't take a minute to go check if my order was ready? She don't have any class she was touching her noise that nasty stupid Idiot! Never going back there don't understand how you guys on t.v maybe that's why she don't even come out! Everything teased bad! Worst bakery ever!! I came out crying cause I was really respectful to her and she gave mi a shitty shitty customer service!

Catherine C.

Yelp
Great food and great location. Customer service could be a little better.... a little more organized... I feel rushed by the employees when I go. They walk away before you finish ordering.... and why on earth is there 1 register?!?! That little area gets so crowded. I also don't like how when you buy things like pastelillos, alcapurrias...etc.... everything gets thrown in a paper bag together.... no napkins/wax paper... nothing.
google avatar

Kristina S.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic Puerto Rican food, you will find it in the quaint little cafe. The quality of food tastes amazing, the variety of food in addition to the bakery items is a true replication of food you get in the Caribbean. I would recommend everyone to eat here! Great and amazing food!
google avatar

Alfreds C.

Yelp
Great food , my favorite place every Sunday with the family. Try the pinchos delicious.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Our Vice Principal recommended the restaurant. It was AMAZING!!! The customer service was great, they delivered in a reasonable time, and the portions are insane considering the affordable price, and the cuisine is authentic Puerto Rican, which is my absolute FAVE!!!!!! 5 stars across the board.
google avatar

Jess B.

Yelp
I have passed this place on the way to work many times, but finally stopped in last week to get an assortment of pastries for my coworkers. Although I can't comment on the other fare, the pastries were all delicious! The staff was helpful in letting me know what each thing was and helped me choose a variety of items. I especially loved the quesitos (cream cheese filled) and guava pastelitos. The downfall is that I wish they stayed open a hair longer so I could grab something after work :)

Yelp
This place right here has the best alcapurias in town. They actually taste like the alcapurias you would hve in the island. Not those weird plump things they sell you at that other place. Every time im in the mood for some good frituras this is my go to place.
