A former coworker told me about this place. As I was pondering where to go for my first meal of the day, and since it was after noon, I decided to check this place out for the first time.
I prefer crispy tacos because that's how I had them growing up
I'm SoCal in the 50s and 60s. So I was stoked when I saw the photos of the tacos. They looked big and crispy.
As others have reported, this a gas station restaurant at the opposite end of the gas station/convenience store operation and checkout counter. It has a real mom and pop vibe. There are about 3-4 tables available for eating inside. Since it was 112 outside, I opted for staying inside. Even though there was no central air, it was definitely cooler than outside.
The cooks appeared to be family members. The lady who waited on me was friendly and helpful. I ordered 2 goat, crispy, birria style tacos with cheese; a small order of beans; a small goat consomé and a hibiscus drink. This cost $20.03.
I looked for a seat and all tables had someone at them. Their were 2 tables in front of the counter that had been pushed together. I asked if I might sit at the table and he agreed.
While waiting, we shared pleasant conversation. He said that he was a regular there and that the food was really good.
They were very busy with take out orders and after 20 minutes, my food was ready. It came in 3 sets of packaging, which I considered a bit much because I was dining in. Three separate plastic bags: 1 for the beans, napkin and spoon; a second for the consomé; a 3rd for the styrofoam box holding the tacos. Owners, maybe you could cut costs for those eating in. IJS.
The food itself was delicious. The tacos were crispy, as I like them, and I really enjoyed them. I thought they had forgotten the cheese because I didn't see any. However, once I took a bite, I found out where it was! It was slathered between the two crispy tortillas - kinda like a grilled cheese sandwich tacos. My friend told me to get the consomé so that I could dip the taco in it. This is what I did and it was a good touch. I probably won't order the consomé again because I think while it added a bit of extra flavor it was not enough to offset the $5 cost. The tacos alone were very good. A couple of salsas accompanied the tacos - 1 green and 1 red. I guess I'm a wimp because both were too spicy for me. But again, the tacos stood alone on flavor, without any additions but the sliced radishes that accompanied them.
As I was eating, the young man so had been talking to was about to leave and asked if he could buy my meal. I thanked him and politely refused but he said that talking to me reminded him of his grandmother who died 7 years earlier and that if I had been his grandmother, he would have bought her lunch. After that, how could I refuse. I shall pay it forward! This was the last thing I expected when I walked into this place.
I highly recommend you try this place f you're on the mood for tacos that are just a cut above the regular tacos.
