I actually had to go through my reviews to make sure that I hadn't already reviewed these guys. I love their food so much, so I'm actually honestly surprised I hadn't. This is another stop that we made during SCV restaurant week. The idea behind restaurant week was to find new favorites, but we kind of had to hit this place as well, mostly because their offerings for restaurant week were so amazing. For $22, you got an empanada, a choice of three entrées add a choice of three desserts. We jumped at it.
And in fact, we went with a group of nine other friends, and made a party out of it.
Our group of 11 people ended up ordering at least one of the seven different menu items made available, and there wasn't a single negative word spoken about the food we ate. Personally, I got my longtime favorite, Ropa, Vieja, and it was as good as it always is. Super savory with just the right amount of Tomato base and spice and the beef had been simmered to ropey perfection. On top of my chicken empanada, I had to get an order of Pappas Rellanas (potato balls), which, next to a good eggroll, is my favorite appetizer...when done right. Their picadillo is tasty and always on spot.
I will say, the Tres leches cake at the end of the meal was new to me... I usually don't get dessert at restaurants, only because I want to concentrate on the meal and dessert is distracting. But it was very tasty and super moist. I don't know that I'd order it again, for the reasons mentioned above, but if somebody offered it to me, I wouldn't say no.
I cannot recommend this place more, especially considering it really is the only Cuban in town... We do have one other restaurant that is very good, but ownership has an interesting relationship with scheduling, and it's never easy to find them open. Which is fine, because El Cubano has stepped up and is easily The best Cuban we have in Santa Clarita.
