The Best Cantinas in Mexico City | Eater

"In operation since 1874, this historic spot draws visitors for its legacy as much as its food: the cabrito (baby goat) has never left the menu and has many fans, you can start with morcilla imported from Burgos, Spain, and then move on to one of three parrilladas; a daily four-course set lunch menu is a bargain." - Rulo David

Came for a quick drink and to check out one of the eldest cantinas in town. Service was good and drinks were good. I had the house drink called Menyul and I liked it. It had mint, rum, gin and other spirits. Not too sweet and refreshing. A table nearby had a parrillada that looked pretty yummy. We will have to come back to try it.

Great service, outstanding food, and the "molcajete" is fabulously delicious! You need to be hungry when you visit this restaurant 👍🏻

Nice historical cantina, but the service is slow and bad.

Wanted to visit this place as for the great write ups in several blogs. Walked by today for a drink to watch a bit of football. Was assigned a very aggressive waiter who spoke good English, experience already ruined as we felt pressured. When I asked for a couple of minutes he disappeared, never to be seen again until asking for the bill. Waiter decided to add 15% tip without asking and we left. Also: I really don’t like to be called buddy! Place to avoid in my opinion!

It opened in 1878 and looks like it hasn't been remodeled since 1978. The prices are too high for a place pretending to be 5 star. The seats, tables and cutlery are very worn out. The food was very mediocre. The beginning chicken soup tasted like it was out of a can and the bartender clearly never made a martini in his life! AND, because i was a woman dining alone, the aged waiter was brusque and cool to me. Not worth it!

The service is very nice; however there are several dishes from the menu that are not available…big disappointment. Then we ordered a “Molcajete” which it supposedly have plenty of meat, however it was full of shredded tortillas in order to give the impression that it was a well served dish, again very disappointing

Had a few different goat dishes. First time and I will certainly be trying them again. The coffee was strong and delicious. The consomme was light yet earthy. The hours for goat meat is very limited though - I believe only on weekends.

Yelp
Established in 1874, this place embodies Old School (although México being ANCIENT, 1874 is like being a teenager). El Gallo de Oro, or golden rooster, is all dark wood, atmospheric cantina and restaurant in the heart of Mexico City's Centro Historico. A very sweet Coyoacan barista (thanks, Ana Victoria!) recommended I try the weekend buffet here that starts at 2:30 on Saturdays and Sundays (ignore the Yelp info that says it's closed on Sunday because that's the day I ate there!) The spread was truly awesome, think home cooking that your Mexican Grandma might make on Sundays, except you'd need several grandmas because that's how many main dishes there were. For 149 pesos ( about US$8 ) you get all you can eat Mexican rice, veg and ham soup, black beans, bread or tortillas, and a variety of guisados, or stews. Today the list included (deep breath): chicken and mushroom stew, pork in green mole, albondigas (meatballs) in chipotle sauce, pork chile verde, pork in red chile sauce, chicken tinga, rajas (pasilla chile strips) in cream sauce, beef flautas, pata (cow foot) in vinaigrette, chicharron in salsa verde, potatoes and sausage. Phew! If reading this list was rough imagine trying every item like I did today. Pacing yourself and taking small helpings got me through the marathon session of over an hour of slowly working my way through each dish. I can't say that I had a favorite but nearly all of them struck me as tasty, carefully and lovingly prepared by the team of six cooks (only two are men) who, according to my server Felipe, have all worked for years at Gallo de Oro. At 79 years old, Felipe says that he has no plans to retire despite having put in 34 years already there! As I was finishing my meal a bus load of about 20 tourists from Puebla sat down at a table next to me, so I felt lucky that I'd beat the rush. I am looking forward to going back to Gallo de Oro not just for the mind boggling array of good, down-home Mexican cooking but also to see if anyone turned in my favorite prescription sunglasses I lost while eating there. Well...win some, lose some I guess.

Yelp
Nice old school place! Great vibe and great staff. I stopped in after a long day of sightseeing and had some cold cerveza. One of the oldest bars in town of you're into that thing.
